Could the double digit runaway inflation we had about a generation ago have worsened into triple digit and more hyperinflation? What would be the global consequences of the world's strongest nation seeing its dollar shrink every month, every week and even every day?

Sure, have the US government have a larger deficit and the Fed keeping the interest rates low. The global consequence would likely be a world wide depression.

Could such a depression lead to global war, like last time?

It could but I doubt it as people would have to go stark raving mad to start a world war when nukes are around.
