I run the Ottoman Empire, which means that if any foreign powers want to bully or buy Yemen, they have to deal with me
Yemen's player continues to be the Yemeni people (I'm pretty sure Oman wasn't conquered), as well as the family of the conquered/surrendered rulers.
Vulcantrekkie runs the governors of Yemen for as long as Carpathia is trusted. how does that sound?

in 1525 I assigned Christian of Carpathia to govern Ottoman-conquered Yemen.

if there are cadet branches (or siblings) of the Yemeni lord who was defeated/had surrendered, I'm sure he might be able to keep the family title "Defender of the Hajj" if he swears to continue doing exactly that. (and his son might be entrusted to succeed the Armenian Muslim presently governing the Holy Cities)

Okay.

You put a Christian in charge of a Muslim people....somehow this sounds like a bad idea.

Does Christian of Carpathia even speak Arabic??

Why wouldn't the Ottomans take such a title?

Where do you think most of the governors of the Anatolian steppes came from? Bulgaria wasn't the only Christian region treated like that - other parts of the Balkans in OTL also provided governors from their nobility.

he probably does (Osmanli, at least - which is a form of Arabic)...but the Ottoman administrators and paper-pushers under his command, definately do.

Why wouldn't the Ottomans take such a title?

Isa's successor probably will, but Isa's going to let the Yemeni soak up the costs of defending pilgrims from desert tribes, for as long as possible)

Steppes? Anatolia is fairly rugged terrain.

Bulgaria wasn't the only Christian region treated like that - other parts of the Balkans in OTL also provided governors from their nobility.

Do you have some references on that?

Okay. Especially since we're this far after the POD you can pretty much have him learn what language you will.

Fair enough.

apologies; I wasn't sure what else to call it....Anatolia is a plateau, and on that plateau, you have mountains going up from there, and valleys going down from there. is there a word to describe that? *is curious*

Do you have some references on that?

Colin Imber's "The Ottoman Empire".

So how much shipping and trading is to be expected to come out of Yemen? There might still be some residual feelings of dislike toward them as they've been the subject of Portuguese raiding and pirating for the last two decades.

Though Prince Henrique's visit there and later Prince Francisco's visit will push things in the right direction.

well, until Emperor Isa can get those Red Sea ports up and running, Yemen's the Ottoman Empire's only non-land route to the kingdoms of India.

so...as much as possible.

*nods* excellent.

Cool. Keenir, give me a year when you'd like to see Rajput-Bharat merchant ships start showing up at your ports, and I will make it so.

any time at least 5 years after the conquest of Yemen. (1518 if I recall)

I think about 1525 is a good time, since that's when the Portuguese stop raiding the Yemen. It would cause peace to settle and encourage traders to set up links with that place again, once the realize that the Ports aren't gonna be mistaking them for Yemen and attacking them...

You do have the Ethiopians trying to gain control of shipping on the Red sea to worry about. Djibotiu is right across the strait from Yemen
