(ooc: and before you ask, yes I did ask if there were cadet branches to the family, or siblings or cousins)

Unlikely, IMO.

Well a bit better there....

how so? it was Standard Operating Procedure - send regional nobility to govern on the other side of the empire. (I also cleared the event (pretty sure also the individual) with Vulcantrekkie)

Noted. I see a peasant revolt in your future.

Manoel opens the military and naval academies to the ‘lower’ classes, merchants, traders, etc.

First, do we know when the first military academies were begun OTL? This seems like a big innovation and we should discuss its genesis and plausibility.

Second, why are they opening it to the lower classes?

When were these produced OTL?

The practice is fine...it was the Christian/Muslim dynamic that gave me pause. In an area like Anatolia with a more mixed population, it is likely less of an issue. But Yemen is pure Muslim to the best of my knowledge, and thus this may not be the most likely choice.

Do me a favor and PM Abdul on it see what he thinks. If its Kosher with him, its fine with me.

I could just make it 'academies' in the same sense of universities are in this time and age. Simply buildings where subjects of war and administration are pulled together.

As for the opening to lower classes. It's where the support and money is coming from. We're not talking about peasants, we're talking about the rich merchants and traders and financiers that are pulling money into Portugal.

When were these produced OTL?
There is no real definite date, but Portugal did start making their Naos bigger and bigger as time went on. They're not Galleons, those will be around in about 40 years, instead they're just simply bigger versions of the ships they already have. The rich trade with India pushes them to make bigger ships capable of hauling more cargo, thereby making every trip more profitable.

I have to agree with him. It was almost an exchange of hostages type of thing. Additionally it brought in new ideas.
