Stockholm 0158 hrs, Quarterdeck, UNK NV DN 101 Gustus Vasa, Flagship of the Nordic Navy.
Lt. Svensholf stood alone on the Quarterdeck, This was his first Midwatch since being promoted to Lt. Two days before. It was also his very First as Officer of the Day. Before there had been a senior officer standing it with him for training. The Watch Petty Officer was up on the Bridge taking Weather measurements. Not that it was needed while here at anchor in the Middle of the Harbor. But the Kings Ships had been logging the Weather on the hour, for two hundred years. No one was going to ask a Junior Lieutenant if they should stop. The Seaman on watch, was below waking the crewmen who had requested 0200 wakeups.
The Sky lite up with a Blue Flash, like the brightest flash Bulb in the World. At the same time a wave of Dizziness passed over him. As a Midshipman at the Academy, He had read about the Japanese invasion at Pusan, Korea, In 1922. And how the Chinese commander had ignored the radio reports from the Patrol Boats. Almost like in a Dream He saw himself reach out and pick up the 1MC, as at the same time he pushed the General Quarters Alarm. “General Quarters, General Quarters, This is not a Drill , All Hands Man Your Battle Stations” As the Alarms rang out from the Flagship, Lt. Svensholf could hear the alarms on the other ships , and then from the shore.
0400 hrs Basement War Room -Ministry of War.
Fleet Admiral Gray Thought he finally had a handle on the whole situation. 'IF this is truly the fault of a false alarm , By some Jr. Lieutenant, I'll have His Career for Breakfast”. “No You won't, You are going to give that Young Lieutenant a commendation .” The Admiral Looked up to see Who had dared to Contradict Him. He Blanched as He recognized King Fredrick Christian Gustav, and with him was the Minister of War, Philip Jorgesen, and the Minister of State Thor Ericsson.
As He Braced to Attention “Exquese Me Sire” “ I said you will give that young Man a Commendation. There are a Few thing s You are over Looking.” Turning to The Mof S “At 0200 hrs at the same time as the Flash [whatever that was ] The French were sending their Daily Reports, when they stopped. The line had gone dead.” The Intelligence Officer who was [Monitoring] the reports. Reported it to his superiors, “ There is NO Contact with any city in Europe outside the Kingdoms. Nor are any of the overseas cables working.”
Turning to look around the room Adm. Gray stopped at the Major who had been trying to give him some reports for the last fifteen minutes. Grabbing the reports the Admiral Read them ,and his Face Blanched. “No contact with the Navy base in Kiel, Denmark. No contact with the army base at Petza on Lake Onega. Or the base at Kem on the White Sea. Whe have contact with Murmansk, but can't raise the Naval Weather station on Spitzbergen. Whe seem to have lost half of Karelia. And the lower third of Denmark. ?And you say no contact with Iceland? ?Could this be a Attack by a Prussian- Russia Alliance, Against Us and the French Empire.”
Striding to the Map Board with the King and the Ministers, the Admiral conferred for a few minutes and started snapping out orders. I want two destroyers under way to Iceland, within the Hour, and two more to the Faros. Contact Murmansk, and have them send a ship to Spitzbergen. I want army patrols to search the roads and find out what happened to the telefonas Lines. And it will be first twilight in ten Minutes . I want a four plane squadron to take off and see what happened to Kiel.
0600 hrs
With a pale face the Officer approached and reported on the Planes , according to the report, just south of the Solwig/Holtein Border The Squadron had contacted a single plane with a Broken Arm Cross on the wings. The one plane had proceeded to shot down all four Planes. As far as was known the Nordic Fighters hadn't gotten on Hit. But at least the pilots of the first three planes were known to have bailed out safely.
“I want several Companies of troops at all Border Crossings. They are to stop all attempted entry till farther notice”

Hey DominusNovus,
Before I post the next update, just have a few questions. Is Greek still a major language in IRU? If so, what are the chances that an average officer on the Eastern frontier will understand it? I would imagine my Byzantines trying to communicate with your troops in the area, but considering in ATL they came from Latin is pretty much a dead language, known only by a few scholars and few monks (which is often the same thing), there would be an issue of communicating.
Also, is Christianity still a major religion in IRU? If not, what is the main religion? It would be interesting to see what the Christian Byzantines (who consider themselves to be a true Roman Empire) would think of undeniably powerful, but non-Christian entiry that has the same claim to the Roman Imperial title.
Finally, what is the technology development level of the Caliphate of Rome? Specifically, the military tech. My next update involves Byzantine scouting of their surroundings, and trying to figure out what is going on, and, being very defensively-minded, they are likely to look at their neighbours military capacity first.
Thank you!

Its spoken in the east. Latin dominates in most regions, but its not unheard of to come across a town where most of the people speak greek as their first language. More common in the east that someone speaks both.

Almost overwhelmingly Roman Catholic. As for a non christian rome, you've got one to your south. :p

Probably OTL, maybe a bit more advanced in regards to planes. I'm gonna check if thats ok. I've lost most of my empire, so I'm in a similar position to Grey Wolf. But what we've got is state of the art.

OK - I'll more or less let you decide the Faeroes. They are an Icelandic dependency with limited self-government flying quartered cross showing the Icelandic crowned falcon in the upper left quartile. Two old light cruisers are based in the main port. The population is probably twice OTL but declining as its importance has likewise declined in recent years. The extra population is catered for by a settlement non-existent in OTL but with the size and economic life of the OTL main one. There is radio contact with Iceland and a cable from Northern Germany in the ATL also ran through the Faeroes to Iceland and thence to the N American principalities. There is a small garrison force of Icelandic army units, and a native militia. There are a handful of bi-planes in the non-OTL settlement's airfield and these have seen better days. Iceland has informed them that there is some kind of emergency but they know little more than that

First Class Sailor Méndez looked again the horizon. He took his last cigarette and looked absemindedly to the horizon. He just hoped that he was not noticed there, it had been a hectic day and he considered that he deserved a few minutes to relax. In fact he thought that all this was just another exercise. There were rumours that the government had been deposed, even that the Germans and the Ottomans had taken the Iberian peninsula. But if that was the case they should have heard something, a radio transmision from the mainland or from another ship, or communication from their spies in wherever they were. No, it was surely an exercise. At least he would met his old friend "el chispas" destined in the Lusitania. Oh, what a nice ship it is...

"Admiral Preto from the Galleon-1 fleet to the legal government of the Iberic Union, please restablish the communication with us. We are in the way to Lisbon in order to cooperate to restablish the constitutional order in our country."
Most of the Galleon-1 fleet is converging over Lisbon, the plan is to keep at 20 miles away from the coast and send some scouting submarines and planes.
Involved forces: Carrier "Cristobal Colón" (11 fighters, 8 naval bombers, 9 dive bombers), 1 battle cruiser "Lusitania" (similar to OTL Bismark), 1 heavy cruisers "Indibil", 2 light cruisers, 6 destroyers and 14 submarines.
The rest of the fleet is patroling around Macaronesia with reinforcements of the Athlantic fleet of Spanish Africa.

Stockholm – Morning- day three
The King looked around the conference room. It had been a hectic couple of days, but they seemed to be getting on top of it . Setting up a group of historians from the university had helped, but the way the historians and their students were drooling over every tidbit, we're lucky Stockholm hasn't flooded.
.......The Icebreaker sent to Spitzbergen has been delayed by Arctic storms, and heavy ice, and the Frigates sent to Iceland hasn't reported back yet. But whe have a report from the Faeroes . Evidently when they arrived the coast patrol boats Stationed there were out on a Search & Rescues. When the Captain of the Frigate said he was there due to the Emergency, they took him immediately to the Governor. It is Clear from his report that the Faeroes are not ours, and never were. The population appears to be a mix of Scots, and Norse. After he made his report the Captain joined in the SAR. Fortunately the Electric Disturbance appears to be over and Radio communication is back to normal........
...........Whe haven't gotten a reply from Russia on our request for diplomatic contact but it is still Dawn in St. Petersburg........................
.................. The Conditions south of Denmark, appear to be our main point of Conflict. Apparently this Germany was engaged in a attempt to reestablish a Empire lost in a “Great War” Twenty years ago. They were in the Middle of a invasion of Poland when it happened, and it took them most of the first day to realize and disengage. They seem to be Calling it some kind of Victory. There have been no answer to our requests about the fate of our pilots. ...........................
.........Whe still don't have much information yet about France, Britain or Spain, but we'll keep working on them......

Admiral Preto from Galleon-1 fleet of the Iberic Union to the High Command in Lisbon. The communications with the Local command in Las Palmas and Funchal has been cut. Please inform about the local situation. Our Northafrican allies have reported one incident in the Gibraltar coast when they were tracking one of our destroyers (the "Almirante Laynez") and one of his freighters (the "Estrella del Sur"). One of his Airships was attacked losing two airplanes and being badly damaged, they report that at least twelve men were dead.
We'll keep our position 20 miles of the Lisbon coast, but please inform of the situation in the Iberic Union.

As the Niger HQ lacks the transmision media to communicate with the High Command our kind Northafrican allies have offered us the long range instalations in Tunis.
We have sent an airship to determine the situation in the rest of the British Central Africa but apparently all the instalations, such as telegraph lines, railways and roads have disappeared, even the towns, villages and british colonies. Some areas of London were destroyed during the Great War, the germans had an impressive Zeppelin fleet. Some important buildings such as the colonial administration were secretly transferred to the wharf areas. At the end of the war they were not moved again... and the british built their own rigid airship fleet which by 1939 has matched the German Empire one.
In this TL in 1939 London is an administrative city but the economics has moved to the West, the main port is now Southampton.

The above message was actually intended for DominusNovus' Imperial Roman Union... at this point the only nations that the Byzantines are aware of (somewhat dimly) are the IRU, Russia, Hungary-Austria, Germany, and the Sultanate. I would imagine it would change when (and if) Byzantium acquires radio though. At this point however, the only way Byzantium would be able to make contact is either by sending an airship that way, or by sending representatives to meet with the other side in person, which at this point only would be possible with the nation that they have a direct border with.
Sorry!

September 8, 1939
Field Marshall Hermann Kitchner can’t believe the events of the last week. The overnight fall of the Empire thru what it seems an attack by our former allies the Germans and by rebellion by the Hungarians has shocked him to the core. “My beloved Graz part of the German Reich. How this could have happen? Worse, the German said that our area was under the control of Italy and we should obey their orders.”
The Italian government sent a Demarche two days ordering our forces to accept their authority or else. General Kitchner time was running out and his duty was now the troops under his command. “Karl, please send this message to Rome.”, he ordered his aide while handling him a piece of paper.
“Yes, Field Marshall, sir.” responded his aide and stepped out of the door.
“It’s done. I hope I made the right decision.”

“Sir, your ploy worked. Better than your Excellency expected.” The Prime Minister secretary smiled at his boss.
“Yes, he accepted full citizenship to all his troops and autonomy under Italian flag for the Trentino area, plus to make the deal sweeter he pledge the loyalty of his troops against the devious Germans. Our misinformation campaign worked perfectly. ” The Prime Minister smiled back at his aide. “ Sent my congratulations to our propaganda agents in the radio stations in Milan and Venetia. Their descriptions of the bloodless coup in Vienna that gave the power to the Germans were truly a piece of art.”

Bertchesgarden, Austria: Meeting between Hitler, and Goerig
"...mein fuhrer, we do not KNOW why the italians sent this out, we are as confused as the next. Not even the Romans in Venedia know who sent this and why." Hitler glared at Goerig with anger, letting his anger seep into every atom of his being. "I want this solved NOW...I will make a radio address to the peoples of Austria-Hungary, to tell them that we did nothing of the sort..." Goerig looked quite confused. "But sir...what of our plans along with the Romans to annex hungary and part of serbia?" Hitler groaned. "It will have to take a backseat to this, if we are to annex it, then we need their support now don't we?" Goerig smiled. "This could work to our advantage. We claim to be helping the hungarians to regain independence by sending in a force of troops to annex the country. Once this is all settled, then we will be able to fight the Italians on our OWN terms...yes, this will work quite well I believe mein fuhrer, we already have troops staitoned along the hungarian border, you only have to give the word, and they will launch." Hitler grinned. "Yes, that works quite well, good thinking Goerig, contact the generals and get an operation up and running by the end of today, not a large one, but big enough so as to scare off any more italian "intervention" in the Austro-Hungarian theatre of operations..." Goerig nodded, shot the facist salute, and walked out of the room.
2120 Hrs, radio address to the Austro-Hungarian peoples.
"...Once again, I do state, that we did NOT inform the Italians that they could take control of Austria-Hungary. We believe in your rights, in your right to sovereignty, and the right to be free of foreign rule, and to complete your own dreams of lebansraum, if you wish to do so. I, myself, am from Austria, I know of your heritage, and long line of rule. I would never under ANY circumstances allow any nation to impose its will upon Hungary. Due to this, we believe it is in the best intentions of your nation, to send our forces into hungary, to drive out the italians, we will NOT occupy your nation, we are going to help you in this time of need. We apologize for our late response to your plea for diplomatic relations but considered at the time further studies were necessary. Your Airship arrived the city of Milan on the 5th of September under escort but rest assured that the crew has been well treated as the honored guest they are. We will be receptive to diplomatic discussions with your nation, but please make sure further discussions are directed to the city of Rome. A bright future to both our nations,

Kingdom of Italy
We are pleased to hear from you. Due to the events of the last few days we have been trying to restablish communication with the rest of nations in the Mediterranean Basin. We are working now on a line suggested by our scientists that a certain alteration of the space-time might have "mixed" different parallel universes. So we would like to confirm whether you are "our time line" Republic of Italy after some political changes or you are "a different time line" Italy. In that case we would like to share information with you in two lines: first of all in order to settle a fluid relationship of friendship and cooperation between our two nations based on mutual respect and defense of the Buenos Aires Declaration of Human Rights.
We also advise you to determine the exact borders of the area "transferred" from "your time line" in order to avoid diplomatic incidents with other nations. Maybe we could send you some of the discoveries made by our scientists.
Finally we would be very grateful if you could asist our diplomatic mission to settle a new embassy in Rome and allow the airship that we sent to come back to Oran maybe with a diplomatic mission on your own.
We have been requested by Archbishop Mart*n de los Heros to ask you about the situation in the Holy See, that in "our time line" had in Rome the spiritual capital of the Catholic World.

Can you give me names of ships and commanding officers ? I want to try and include them in a write-up somewhere. The one at Spitzbergen (is it an icebreaker, is it armed ?) can be dealt with in Atmosphere as a Russian ocean-going submarine, the Kerch, is about to put in there. btw what is the Nordic flag ?
Thanks !

To the Nations of the North Atlantic
Owing to the severe disruption in trade that has occurred due to the Event of Magnitude, the Kingdom of Iceland wishes to invite you to an International Trade Conference to be held the 30th September. We have noted from radio communication that many of you will have delegations in St. Johns (Newfoundland) the week prior to this, so extend our hospitality as an extension of that offered by our American cousins.
We respectfully request that delegations with plenipotentiary powers are sent, including experts in the fields of finance, trade and maritime law. Our banking houses stand firm, but we are aware that several of you are going to be in a period of great financial crisis. Loans secured on tangible property will be underwritten by the Crown, and are available to our immediate neighbours.
Our aims in this Conference of the North Atlantic are threefold :-
1. To re-establish trading relations between nations. We will all have mercantile fleets with no contracts, goods to offer with no confirmed buyers, bills of sale with no goods to be delivered and so forth. Lawyers in international trade need to agree a process for blending the contracts currently existing with needs and future deliveries. We envisage a two-fold approach. Where goods have been paid for and not delivered, these can be paired between the merchant without a customer, and the customer without a merchant. In effect, the customer has paid and should not be required to pay twice, and the merchant has been paid and should not require to be paid twice. A pairing up of contracts would simplify the issue of cargoes currently in transit or suspension. The second aspect would be to establish new contracts where none already exist. As such, each nation would be advised to come with a briefing document from each of their major merchant houses involved in importing, and exporting.
2. To re-establish the under-pinnings of international finance. We envisage a two-part strategy. In the first instance bi-partite trading banks to be established between nations agreeing treaties of trade and economic investment. These bi-partite agreements would see these new trading banks underwritten by the central banks of the two signatory nations. Over time, it would be envisaged that these agreements become tri-partite and then multi-partite. The trading banks would see mergers and financial expansion, and perhaps by the turn of the New Year we would be in a position to rationalise the market. It would be foolhardy to attempt to do so from the top; acting precipitately before we see the turn of events could lead to a financial collapse from which no nation can stand aside.
3. To agree on a concorde of international maritime law. Current agreements have to be considered voided by the Event of Magnitude, but basic principles must be deemed to remain in place. The Freedom of the Seas, the Freedom to Trade and the right of Protection From Piracy are basic international rights that need to be encapsulated in an international treaty as soon as possible. The details, as can be swiftly agreed, of lesser issues should also be included. A Standing Committee can then be established to review outstanding issues, and to issue recommendations in time for a second international conference perhaps six months down the line.
On an issue of such magnitude, we do not anticipate a rejection of our invitation.

DIRECTIVES FOR OUR NATION’S SHORT TERM GOALS
1. The development of the Situation in Germany required the cancellation of all preparations for the occupation of Albania by a part of the Italian Armed Forces (“Operation Icarus”). This operation should be postponed indefinitely due to the possible end of hostilities between the German Reich and the Hungarians and any attempt of recovery of our Albanian territories could be foolish at this time; further it should guarantee terrible casualties to both our Army and Naval branches without any noticeable gain and we should save our resources for use at a later date.
In view of our military and political power in comparison with that of the nation currently occupying Libya, a force as small as possible could be employed in the capture of the Libyan coast. The numerical weakness of our forces will be balanced by daring actions, surprise execution and superior firepower. On principle, we will do our utmost to make the operation appear as a peaceful occupation, the object of which is the military protection of the Libyan coast. Corresponding demands will be transmitted to the Governments at the beginning of the occupation. If necessary, demonstrations by the Navy and Air Force will provide the necessary emphasis. If, in spite of this, resistance should be met with, all military means will be used to crush it. Our main concert at this time is the government of the Kingdom of Spanish Africa. Their forces were victorious in their short war against their southern neighbors, they seemed like a very professional force and they consider themselves the protectors of this primitive Kingdom occupying Libya.
2. A diplomatic solution could be reached to achieve our purposes. Negotiations with the Kingdom of Spanish Africa must be started as soon as possible to try to make them accept our designs for the Libyan territories. In case of failure, negotiations and the funneling of weapons and funds to their enemies is of the outmost importance in our attempts to achieve our purposes.
3. The annexation of the empty island of Malta was an added bonus to our Nation’s designs. With the disappearance of the British garrison of the island our control of the middle Mediterranean Sea is almost complete.
4. Treaty with Brazil
The treaty with Brazil assures our nation at least a small quantity of oil and other resources in exchange of military hardware. The need for oil is the driving force of the foreign policy of our nation at this time and the advantages of the deal with the Brazilians are too many while the cost for our nation is minimal.
5. Negotiations with Spain
Another priority is to extend our hand to the Spanish nation in an attempt to cover our flanks if the situation turns to worse. All attempts must be exhausted to bring this nation to our orbit as soon as possible.

Letter From General Franco to Gramsci
Chief of State and Generalissimo of the Spanish Army
MADRID, October 21, 1939
Dear Prime Minister:
Since our arrival to this world, it has been our intention to make the greatest efforts in our preparations, in order to recover our lost territories in Africa and the Pacific at a favorable opportunity in proportion to the means at our disposal, since the lack of the most vital provisions and the interruption of communications with our world Italy and Germany hindered every operation at the moment.
The rapid and devastating victories of the so called Kingdom of Spanish Africa altered the situation; their seemingly imperial desires blockade our frontiers, rising the grave tension which we along with our Moroccans have been bearing since our Civil War.
From this moment, our horizon became darker, our attempts to recover Morocco became almost impossible by ourselves and could become very dangerous, due to the power of the Spanish Africans and their lackeys.
In this manner, after receiving the message from your Nation a couple of days ago, we had to take a clearer stand, one of alertness, changing to one of non-belligerency, which, in the field of foreign affairs, could not fail to have great repercussions. This move must likely will awake jealousy and opposition, and unleash the hate of the Africans and their lapdogs, causing grave tension in our relations with those countries.
The consequences, which the conquest of the Muslims to the South and the protectorate over what you called the “Libyan dogs” is to have for the Africans to be the undisputed owners of the North African territories and that is dangerous to both our Nations. These events have made it advisable for me, now that the time has come, to charge my Ambassador in Rome with transmitting to Your Excellency the Spanish aspirations and claims traditionally maintained throughout our history in the foreign policy of Spain, today more alive than ever in our consciousness; to territories, whose present administration is a consequence of this strange events are now under the control of those bastardized so called Spanish bent in a policy of domination and exploitation, of which Italy also bears so many scars. To the legitimate Spanish aspirations are added in this case the requirements for security necessitating the elimination of a weak and thinly protected frontier, and the assuring of our communications with the colonists being send to Africa to repopulate the colony of Angola.
In this manner, Spain offers preparing herself to take her place in the struggle against the common enemies when the time comes.
In this sense, we have requested from your nation the necessities for action, while we push forward the preparations and make every effort to better the provisioning situation as far as possible if necessary.
For all these reasons, you will understand the urgency in writing you, to ask your solidarity in these aspirations for the achievement of our security and greatness, while I at the same time assure you of our unconditional support for your expansion and your future.
With my greatest admiration for the brave Italian comrades, I send you my most cordial regards.

Letter From Gramsci to General Franco
ROME, October 25, 1939
To the Head of the Spanish Government
Dear General:
I thank you for the letter which you have sent me, and in which you sketch the position of Spain at this stage.
I should like to make it clear to you at once, that your letter has not surprised me.
Ever since our arrival to this world I have been constantly of the opinion that "your" Spain, the Spain of the Falange Revolution, could not remain idle while losing valuable territories like we did, but at the right moment would change from isolation and later to formal alliance with like minded nations.
Should that not happen, Spain would alienate herself from current events, and could be crushed by nations bend in military conquest.
Furthermore, she would have no moral justification for the solution of her African questions, and, let me say to you, a victorious revolution must set itself extreme goals of an international type, such goals, therefore, as can, at a given moment, require the complete attention and the total effort of a people.
It is clear to me that Spain, after the shock of arrival to this strange world and the lost of their colonies, needed a long period of recuperation, but events will not permit it, and your domestic economic condition will not get worse when you change from isolation to an alliance.
I should like to say to you, dear Franco, that I, with these my practical considerations, do not wish to hasten you in the least in the decision that you have to make, for I am sure that in your decisions you will proceed on the basis of the protection of the vital interests of your people and am just as certain that you will not let this opportunity go by of giving Spain her African aspirations.
There is no doubt that with time and more allies the imperialist Africans will be defeated; they will be at the end the ones isolated not us.
I certainly do not need to tell you that you, in your aspirations, can count on the full solidarity of the Kingdom of Italy.
I beg you, dear Franco, to accept my most cordial and comradely greetings.
Antonio Gramsci

The bedroom was one of the most luxurious in the coastal palace that the exiled imperial court had been granted by the United Nordic Kingdom. Anastasia rolled over and lay naked on her back, her breasts rising and falling with her breathing, her long luscious dark hair spread out across the pillow like a sunburst in the sky.
Across the room, Andrei Kuznetsov smiled at his lover.
"I was trying not to wake you", he said, pulling on one of his boots as he sat on the edge of the chair.
"There was something missing to snuggle against" she laughed.
He did up the boot straps and rose to his feet,
"I have a meeting with Prince Mishkin in a few minutes."
"So there is no time for snuggling ?"
She smiled alluringly at him. Andrei could not resist. He lay down gently upon her on the bed and took her head in his hands,
"My beautiful grand duchess" he breathed into her mouth.
"Kiss me", she panted.
They kissed.
* * * * *
Prince Mishkin was pacing up and down. Problems, problems, and he was relying on someone little more than a youth to deal with these. An ex-student, someone who owed his position in the exile court seemingly to two facts alone - that he was the lover of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Sophiaevna, and thet he had been instrumental in getting both her and the young Tsar out of the Palace of Government and to the Nordic embassy upon the Neva. And now he was late...
The door opened. Andrei Kuznetsov entered, a strange mix of smile and apology upon his face,
"I apologise your excellency for my delay."
"As you will", Prince Mishkin indicated a seat by the table. He had no time for pleasantries; the problems were too pressing.
Andrei sat, looking down at the maps, plans, diagrams and lists which the Admiral of the Fleet had readied for this meeting.
Prince Mishkin picked up the first of these,
"This shows the present disposition of the fleet", he explained, "As you can see the majority of it is at Riga, but a not insubstantial amount is here at Helsinki or along the coast at Hango. In agreement with Admiral Kanenin we have split the logistical and financial responsibilities geographically."
Andrei nodded,
"I see, so the admiral is looking to the Baltic Federation for money ?"
"Yes, and we must look to the United Nordic Kingdom."
"There are sequestrated financial accounts we can ask them to free up", Andrei pondered
"Which may be good for a week, a month ?", Prince Mishkin was not convinced, "We need a secure stipend, a pension if possible."
"I am not convinced that the Kingdom will comply so readily."
"No", Prince Mishkin picked up a list, "These are the sailors from the Rossiya and Aurora who attempted to stage a strike last week. If we do not regain some security, half the fleet will begin to become dangerously unstable."
"I will raise that with the Kingdom authorities", Andrei noted sombrely, "And also that any investment in our cause is to their long-term interest."
"Which is what we have been saying since we arrived", the admiral snorted, "They hear us when they want to hear us."
That of course was true. Andrei sat back for a moment and looked at the prince. He was right, of course, the United Nordic Kingdom would act only in its best interests. Their challenge was to make the Nordics see things from their perspective, and to see that their best interests would be served by giving the exiles their full backing

Captain Bauer of the German Navy Destroyer Prussia, sat at dock in the french port of Brest, back from a set of naval war games with the second fleet, wondering what the hell to think. Earlier that day, a fleet of eight french colonial vessels came into dock, dressed in their dress whites and blues, sounding their guns...it was one hell of a sight.
For all he knew, they were here to open war with the germans, or, this could be their form of showing they were there...whatever they were, they were french, and not to be trusted. "Damn french, I don't care what government is ruling at home, or who is Chancellor of Germany, I still don't trust the french..." he said to himself. When the french fleet came into port, his men were out on deck, quietly scrubbing the decks, trying to make the ship presentable for her trip back to Antwerp, where she would formally be decommissioned, and sent to a museum on the Rhine River.
The Prussia was a vetran of the battle of the Jutland, and she was to be converted to a floating museum, dedicated to the men that have served, or are currently serving in the German Navy. But, when the french left their ships, let's just say there were...difficulties. When two of the men decided to go out for a well deserved drink, still wearing their work uniforms, many of the french officers harassed the men...calling them quitters, and weaklings. To make a long story short, many of the German and French officers had to be picked up at the local police station...due to drunkeness, and open fighting...it was not a good day for Captain Bauer, or for the old workhorse Prussia...

Destroyers of this period are really rather small, and if this Preussen (the German word for Prussia) is a renamed veteran of Jutland (23 years ago) it would be VERY small.
The Preussen who was at Jutland was a pre-dreadnought battleship, scrapped after the war (or at the latest in the 1920s) so this isn't that ship, un-renamed as this is OTL
You might be better off with a cruiser, but again you can't have a Jutland veteran as there aren't any left in OTL, which is where your Kriegsmarine originates. Maybe the Emden built in the 1920s would fit well, ready for decomissioning etc

From the Kingdom of Spanish Africa F.O.
Our government has tried several times to contact our northern neighbors in Spain, however we have not been succesful. In the first moments there was an infortunate confusion in which one of our airships was attacked.
We would be very grateful if you could include as a point of your petitions starting a fluid dialog with us. Our inteligence service has warned us that the Spanish government is not respectful with democratic values and might be hostile to our country.
It would be also be desirable and convenient that you visited us as we have a project that might interest you. In our time line we were considering expanding our oil production and as you will surely know we have signed a cooperation treaty with the Empire of the Lakes. We plan to exploit some Oilfields there and I think it would be a good opportunity for you cooperating in that project by helping us building a refinery in the south of our province of Tunis. We could pay it with oil or with gold until a currency exchange system is created between our two countries.

Just thought I would inform you that a Pacific Dominion naval squadron is going to be in the North Atlantic from Early November.
3rd of November, North Atlantic
The squadron had been at sea for over a month, all but one of the half dozen tankers had long since departed... Commodore Marsh scanned the horizon, in mere hours the squadron would be off the coast of Britain, but a very different Britain to the one the Commodore had left four years back... But it would be good to see old England again... The objective of the squadron had changed drastically since the squadron left Australia, initally it had been dispatched with the expressed purpose of rescuing the Embassy in St Petersburg but since news of the diplomats escape had been recieved the mission had changed to supporting the rightful russian government...
Edit to add:
15th of October, United Nordic Kingdoms
Air Commadore Michael Hall walked the halls of the old castle in which the survivors from the UOPD's diplomatic mission had taken up residence. The days after the Russian coup had been some of the most horrifying Michael Hall had seen: How much blood had been spilt in the streets? How many men, women and children lay dead?
And then had come the evacuation... the Nordics and Japanese had reached the docks without any trouble but their movements had apparently tipped off the rebels. His men on the other hand had suffered greatly, the ambush had left five of the soldiers and nine of the diplomats dead...

Berlin, Greater Germany
November 27, 1939
Night was falling when the train pulled into Berlin from the south. As soon as Federico descended from the train someone called his name. Federico nodded in the direction of the voice and in minutes he and his entourage were whisked away by plain-clothes security officers. He barely had time to note how many people spoke Latin- tourists from the so called Roman provinces located were Poland used to be- before he and his men were in motorcars in the direction of the German foreign office.
Without delay he was guided into the office of the new German Foreign Minister, Helmut Becker. The Foreign Minister was accompanied by the new German leader Gunther Weiss. “Welcome to Germany, Minister Sforza.” he told Federico. He stuck his hand and gave Federico a friendly smile. “ Helmut has been telling me about your proposal. Am I correct in what all this involves? Let me remind you that the past regime of this nation was the one bend in conquest, not this one.”
Federico went straight to the point. “Your highness. Your nation needs oil. We also need oil. We can discuss the details during our meeting but the continuance of this meeting depends of knowing that your nation will stand with us in the coming conflict.”
The response was also direct. “Dear Minister, Helmut has explained to me the major points and the risks that it involves and you can count with our nation’s support in your adventure. But first let’s order some dinner and we can discuss the details afterwards if agreeable with you.”
Federico was in a good mood. These Germans are still a group of barbarians no matter who’s on charge. But very powerful barbarians and is good to have them in our side. “ Yes your Highness. Thank you.”

The Italian ambassador to Spain was a young Tuscan named Alphonso Guglioni. He was of course a socialist like Prime Minister Gramsci. As Franco was concerned that made him an idiot. But he didn’t look like an idiot at the moment.
“Yes, help is on the way sir.” He sat across from Franco’s desk, looking dapper in a white linen suit while sipping some wine offered by an aide a couple of minutes before.
“So it is. Thanks to your nation’s little adventure a part my nation is under the heel of a foreign invader.” Franco rasped.
“We apologize for this but we didn’t expect this imperialist power to have a treaty with the Africans.” Guglioni answered. “But count with our help. As we speak our entire submarine is being positioned around the approaches to the island of Ibiza (1). With the expected arrival of our German ally U-boats later in the month we could strangle their forces in the island. Three divisions in an island that size will be starved to death fairly easy.”
“Oh ,it is, is it? A force that big is a threat to our plans. Even forcing their forces to withdraw from Ibiza could only be a temporary respite from the coming onslaught.” Franco said.
Guglioni shrugged. “Well, their position in Ibiza is impossible to hold forever. We can seal them in place for the time being until our conquest of Libya is completed and them sue for terms accepting the situation. Also these Americans are stretching themselves thin. Our agents in Brazil and in their nation inform us that they are making a move north in the direction of a so called Italian city state federation while a good chunk of their Atlantic fleet is right now bottled up in Ibiza. They are very powerful indeed but it will take time for them to project that power North.”
“ Also we are diverting some ships with weapons and war material from Brazil to a German dominated Congo that seems in conflict with the Africans and hope to get in contact with the remnants of the Africans’ just defeated enemies. ”
“For our sake I hope you’re right and all that measures help. So what aide can I expect from Herr Weiss?” Franco asked.
“ Some forces have been promised for our Libyan campaign but the German Infantry Corps marked as volunteers could be send to your nation instead.” Answered Guglioni “Rest assured we will achieve our objectives and present terms before the end of the year.”

November 29, 1939: 0530 hrs...Wolf Pack 004: En route to the Straights of Gibralter, twelve hours from landing in Gibralter.
"Captain, captain, we have a contact. Indochinese battlefleet, reportedly making its way to the K.S.A for docking, and returning home...they're fully armed and stocked sir..." Kapitanleutnant Gunther Prien nodded his head. Navy Group Center had been sent out to sea two weeks ago for war games. Last week, they were ordered home, now this week, an other war...goodie. Wolf Pack 004 was the best that the Weirmar Republic had to offer in submarine warfare, outfitted with some of the newest submarines, fresh from the assembly line. Sea wolves, Type VIIB U-Boats, some armed with mine laying equipment, the rest, outfitted for anti-shipping, en route to Spain, and this was just an other target.
"Sir...what are your orders?" Prien rubbed his cheek for a second, then looked over to the anxious faces of the men, some, nervous as hell, others, calm and cool under pressure, this was the first test of the German Unterseeboot fleet since the Armistice of 1918, it was time for a re-match of the French vs the Germans, and this time, they would WIN. "Flood tubes one, two, three, and four; arm them. Send out a signal to the rest of the wolf pack, flood tubes, arm tubes, and fire at will. target the Aircraft carrier first, then the destroyers, and Anti-Submarine ships. Those are your first targets, hit them, disable them first, THEN, aim for the battleships, cruisers, and battlecruisers. I want that Aircraft carrier gone before the end of five minutes, got me mister?" The lieutenant nodded his head. "After that, send out a signal to all Navy groups saying we have engaged the French Indochinese fleet, got it?" The lieutenant nodded his head. "Good, now do as I said!" The lieutenant nodded, and ran off.
"Raise to periscope depth, thirty degrees up bubble, make your depth, thirty fleet..." The conn man answered. "Aye sir, thirty degrees up bubble, make your depth thirty feet, aye aye." With that, the submarine lurched up, sending many of them men to their chairs, for the safety of not falling and hitting their heads on steel bulkheads. "Ninety...eighty.....sixty...thirty feet sir, we are at periscope depth, all the rest of the subs have checked in, and have lined up and ready to fire at your command..." Gunther looked through the periscope, perfectly lined up with the Aircraft carrier, flying the french indochinese flag, a neutral state in this war...too far away to make any difference anyways. "...sir...sir we need to fire soon, Otto Ktretschmer and Jochem Mohr are reporting ready to fire, the same with the rest of the captain's..." Gunther let the ship travel for one more second. "...fire at will, full spread." The crew jumped to attention. "Aye aye sir, full spread." Gunther put his hand up, raised it, and yelled out "FIRE!" as he brought his hand down. "AYE SIR!" The submarine lurched forward as her missiles screamed forward from their tubes, making their way to the Aircraft Carrier. The other submarines of the wolf pack, numbering at twenty five in all, let their torpedo's go in conjunction.
"Re-load tubes one through four, send out all signals..." He said, as the torpedo's impacted the Aircraft carrier, sending large spurts of fire and water up from her bowels. "Fire two!" He said as the second volley left the submarine, impacting the Aircraft Carrier, sending her lurching further over to the side. "tell all ships to fire at Anti-Submarine vessels, and at destroyers. Hit the battleships, let's get this done with..."

Antonio Gramsci was not a very happy man. “God damn to hell and gone. What kind of idiots are running the German fleet?”, he shouted to no one in particular, “Well, now we are at war with a nation at the other side of the world thanks to our “volunteer” sub force.”
“I’m sorry, sir. They just arrived to Cadiz and their explanation is that they were too far away to recognize any flags and they thought the convoy was African. A very possible mistake, sir.” Responded Admiral Ciano.
“Don’t give a damn about their excuses.” Gramsci barely can hold his anger. What mess we are getting into! We needed the oil but this is getting out of hand. We need to diffuse the situation as fast as we can. “How bad was it?”
“The French aircraft carrier survived the attack but was badly damaged and at least two or three French destroyers were lost before the German submarines broke their attack. We don’t have a number of casualties but we calculate in the hundreds.” Responded Ciano to the question.
Dear God. This is very bad indeed. “Get in touch with the Jews in control of Palestine and inform them we need to get in touch with French in both Lebanon and Indo-China. Inform them it was all a terrible mistake and we are willing to pay for the damages, both in materiale and in lives caused by our forces. Can you relay that, Federico?" Gramsci gave a tired smile to his friend.
Federico Sforza only nodded and let the office at a fast pace, Now it was his turn to diffuse the situation before it spiraled out of control.
Gramsci turned to the Admiral. “I apologise for yelling at you Admiral but I know you understand this is very bad indeed for our nation. Events are getting out of control and they are moving for the worse.”
Ciano nodded in agreement. “Only hope God helps us in what is coming”
“Yes, all our Nation does” responded Gramsci while he turned and stared out of the window into the terrible darkness.

At first the enemy fleet appeared like tiny specks moving thru the blue sea, but all of a sudden we got jumped by the enemy CAP and we suffered accordingly. The plane to my right exploded in a gigantic fireball and our formations got dispersed by the furious attack of the enemy fighters.
Our planes dropped our cargo into the enemy ships into any clusters of ships visible while trying to dodge the hail of bullets coming from the enemy fighters but all of a sudden a group of our fighters in old aguiluchos (1) came to our rescue. Their old planes suffered terrible casualties but at the end the enemy was swept out of the skies and the remnants of our unit and the dive bomber flight from Malaga got a couple of hits in some of the enemy ships.
They were so many of the enemy ships that it was so difficult not to hit one but the enemy carrier was truly a blessed ship. The 5 dive-bombers tried to concentrate against it but all they did to get themselves destroyed in the process without even getting close to it. Damn the bastards!
We finished our job and suffered terrible casualties but at least close to ten ships were burning and one of the enemy cruisers was definitely sinking fast. We avenged Ibiza.”

“Visibility was good. Clouds were gathering at about 3,000 feet and gave good concealment to our forces. At 16:51 hours the order to attack was given when a scream on the radio announced the arrival of the enemy’s fighter protection. The enemy fighters were superior to our own but we had the numerical superiority and even when some of our bombers were destroyed but we concentrated in the already damaged ships. And the damage we inflicted was heavy indeed.
A blinding flash to my left and then a terrible explosion announced the dead of an enemy cruiser. The enemy battle cruiser was an incredible workhorse. I saw that bastard receive closer to three direct hits and still their AA batteries were launching lead to our departing bombers. While we left the burning enemy hulls the bastards Americans will remember this day for a long time. Tears of joy came to my eyes as I watched the fires spread and as a last farewell a terrible explosion announced the death of another enemy cruiser. Viva España!

The noise was getting too much for prime minister Samuel Brown, how could he go about ruling the country through its darkest hour with all of that ruckus outside. He looked up from over his morning paper towards his secretary John Carter “Carter”
“Yes sir?”
“Would you be so kind as to tell the police to remove that man”
“Certainly Sir”
Carter got up from behind his desk and left the room- the most important room in the world in fact, the office of 10 Downing Street. Brown pulled himself up from his desk and moved to the window through which he could see the source of the noise which was stopping him from running the country as smoothly as possible.
In the middle of the street was a smartly dressed man who appeared to have set up a makeshift desk, he was talking on a telephone (the wire of which stretched off into the distance- it might actually be working) and shouting about declaring war on this nation, having coffee rather then tea tonight and some incoherent gibberish.
Just as he had hung up the phone on the ‘Ambassador of the Martian Republic’ one of the police officers moved from his position in 10 downing street towards the crazy man, the policeman grabbed the phone, threw it to the ground and stamped on it then kicked over the desk. The man jumped up from his seat and starting yelling “How dare you! I am the prime minister of the Unicoted Kingdon yooo stooped cop, I own you! I sho…” He was silenced by a baton to the top of the head and promptly arrested. It wasn’t long before a police car came into the street and the man was bundled away.
“How very odd…” commented the prime minister “We should install some gates I suppose what with the state of emergency”

Italian-Sarajevo Republic Border
20 kms east of Fiume.
December 27th 1939
Dirt fountained up as Italian artillery pounded Bosnians’ defenses on the border with a vengeance. “That’ll teach the son of a bitches.” Sergeant Eric Schenck said gleefully as the barrage went on and on.
“ Sergeant, get the men ready.” Captain Peter Backer told his sergeant. The division his company is part of, a former division of the now non-existent Austro-Hungarian Empire (1), now of the Italian army but they will have the honor to join in the liberation of their former lands. Captain Backer knew of the reports of the rapid advances of the German forces into Hungary since the beginning of their offensive two days ago and how they were being received like heroes by the citizens in the areas being liberated, but he expected a different welcome. Intelligence reports the best units in the area are moving north to try to stop the German advance but the enemy are very strong in the area and the population is Slavic.
At last, the guns fell silent. They had being going on so long, Backer imagined he still can heard them roar in his head but he expected the enemy to still respond even under this incredible barrage. All of a sudden, Bosnian machine gunners squeezed off a few quick bursts to let their foes know they were still around.
“Bastards,” Sergeant Schenck snarled. “ Even under this barrage they are still around. Bastards!”
“ Bombardment by artillery is the wrong way to eliminate the enemy defenses. But we have the right weapon for the mission. Sergeant, order the men to put their masks on and be ready to move. Also call regiment HQ and tell them conventional artillery failed. We need some special rounds to be lobbed to our front.” Captain Backer ordered while smiling. The son of the bitches will suffer as much as our poor women and children. Hope they like mustard. He smiled again at his own private joke.

Slovenia, Sarajevo Republic

January 2nd 1940
Memories of Captain Peter Backer
Italian 1st Jager Division (1)
Our front lines were marked by long strips of colored cloth laid on the ground, and with colored smoke to guide the German airmen during the mass bombing that preceded our breakout in the direction of Zagreb.
Dive bombers hit it just right. We stood in the barnyard of a Slovenian farm and watched them barrel nearly straight down out of the sky. They were bombing about half a mile ahead of where we stood.
They came in-groups, diving from every direction, perfectly timed, one right after another. Everywhere you looked separate groups of planes were on the way down, or on the way back up, or slanting over for a dive, or circling, circling, circling over our heads, waiting for their turn.
The air was full of sharp and distinct sounds of cracking bombs and the heavy rip of the planes' machine guns and the splitting screams of diving wings. It was all fast and furious, but yet distinct, as in a musical show in which you could distinguish throaty tunes and words.
And then a new sound gradually droned into our ears, a sound deep and all-encompassing with no notes in it--just a gigantic faraway surge of doomlike sound. It was the heavies. They came from directly behind us. At first they were the merest dots in the sky. You could see clots of them against the far heavens, too tiny to count individually. They came on with a terrible slowness.
They came in flights of twelve, three flights to a group and in groups stretched out across the sky. They came in "families" of about seventy planes each.
Maybe these gigantic waves were two miles apart; maybe they were ten miles, I don't know. But I do know they came in a constant procession and I thought it would never end. What the Slavs must have thought is beyond comprehension.
Their march across the sky was slow and studied. I've never known a storm, or a machine, or any resolve of man that had about it the aura of such a ghastly relentlessness. You had the feeling that even had God appeared beseechingly before them in the sky with palms outward to persuade them back they would not have had within them the power to turn from their irresistible course.
I stood with a little group of men, ranging from colonels to privates, back of the stone farmhouse. Slit trenches were all around the edges of the farmyard and a dugout with a tin roof was nearby. But we were so fascinated by the spectacle overhead that it never occurred to us that we might need the foxholes.
The first huge flight passed directly over our farmyard and others followed. We spread our feet and leaned far back trying to look straight up, until our steel helmets fell off. We'd cup our fingers around our eyes like field glasses for a clearer view.
And then the bombs came. They began up ahead as the crackle of popcorn and almost instantly swelled into a monstrous fury of noise that seemed surely to destroy all the world ahead of us.
From then on for an hour and a half that had in it the agonies of centuries, the bombs came down. A wall of smoke and dust erected by them grew high in the sky. It filtered along the ground back through our own orchards. It sifted around us and into our noses. The bright day grew slowly dark from it.
By now everything was an indescribable cauldron of sounds. Individual noises did not exist. The thundering of the motors in the sky and the roar of bombs ahead filled all the space for noise on earth. Our own heavy artillery was crashing all around us, yet we could hardly hear it.

Professor Abraham ben-Ougala Of the Kingdom of Spanish Africa had arrived in the Empire of the Lakes to study the language. He had been disappointed when the Lax'gozians had started speaking Spanish better than he could Lax'gozian, but the influx of professional translators had freed him to study the language in a academic way.
Now he had a different problem, sometimes he felt like the Dean of one of the largest Universities in the World. There were historians from Europe, Japanese Eygptologist. Harvard Law Professors, Palantologists from Oxford, Doctors from Hopkins, biololigists from William and Mary. As well as new people arriving daily from all over the world. And the Lax'gozians expected Him as the First one to control all the others. He was running a University, with no time for his own research. The one group that had gone missing were the Italian speakers. He wondered what the Lax were doing with them.

Most of the second tier troops, this far front the War, felt that this was just another hair brained scheme of the Brass. The first casulities never knew what hit them. If fact over half the patrols were down before the first alarms were sounded. Fifteen minutes in.
Five sticks of Dynamite around a 2 foot pipe Valve doesn't leave any thing to stop the oil from shooting out. And 100 foot high tank meant that the oil came out at thousands of pounds pressure, extinushing any fires started by the explosion. Of course that ignores the Man throwing- a Botas full of Greek fire tied around a Grenade- into the puddle one minute later. When the Firefighters arrived they would have to wait till the Battle was over. And the Lax'gozians fought till the last one was dead.

Capitan- No- Admiral Von Tripp, He looked down in De-lite at the five broad strips on his Uniform, Felt Great. It was wonderful to have a Ship under his Command again. He didn't care that it was 30 years old. And a cast off from the Nordic Navy. He hadn't expected a brand new ship. This Heavy Cruiser suited him just fine.
The Nordics had sold Israel one Heavy, two Lites, and a Dozen Frigates. They were headed to the Red sea to enforce Israels claim to the Sinai and the northern end of the Red Sea. Von Tripp Knew that Israel was in negotiation for more ships to patrol the Eastern Med. But wanted to wait till the War died down a little. They didn't want their new ships shot up before they even got them home.
At the Next pier there were two lite Cruisers and Six Frigates that the Lebanonese had bought to send to the Persian Gulf to support their claim to Kuwait and the surrounding area. They also had a freighter full of these Tankette-s of the Nordic's. Von Tripp knew that, General DeGualle would love his new toys.

With the gallant Jagers in Zagreb
By Angelo Meina
Reporter Il Messaggero
January 9th 1940
The Jaegers entered Zagreb late this afternoon.
With artillery battering the enemy's collapsing defenses, Austrian troops, but now soldiers of the Kingdom of Italy, clawed into the city from the south, east and west and clamped a firm grasp on the city.
The Slavs' stand-or-die defenses slowly withered under the pounding from our big guns and mortars until at 6 p.m. there were only two strong points south of the city and a few other scattered defense points holding out.
There remains tonight the slow job of cleaning out the main part of the city and the silencing of the enemy guns, which are still firing on our troops who battled their way into the city 19 days after crossing the border.
Zagreb lies under a pall of dust and smoke from fires kindled by artillery explosions and from demolitions of the Slavs who are unable to withstand the crushing power of the attack thrown at them by our forces and our allies incredible air power.
Hundreds of prisoners are streaming back to prisoner cages. There is no estimate of the number, but they are being rounded up in-groups of 20, 50 and 100 at a time, wherever the jaegers go. There are many others dead around the positions hammered by our big guns.
But Zagreb proper is untouched by our artillery fire which is concentrated on points of resistance. Late this afternoon the Slavs blew up the supply depots they had east of the city. A mighty explosion ripped thru the air and clouded the eastern half of the city in dense smoke. There were explosions of other demolitions as the troops advanced.
Zagreb's basin was an inferno of artillery explosions, flames, smoke and dust today--one of the most spectacular and awesome sights I have ever seen. And then, when the troops began the final attack at 2 p.m., a sudden quiet descended over the battlefield--a ghostly sort of silence which was unbroken for minutes by the noise of battle. The only sound I remember was the crunch of shoes on the gravel as the Jaegers marched on Zagreb.
Even though they were told to stand by their guns or be shot as cowards, the Croats broke under the steady hammering of artillery and pressure from the Jaegers, and did not put up the house-to-house defense many expected them to do.
I sat on a bluff overlooking the city this morning and watched artillery work at the job of "completely crushing" the enemy. Rarely in warfare does one get a ringside seat at close range and see the spectacular pyrotechnics such as we looked at today. Our seat was on the bluff above the old stone quarry which had been headquarters for an enemy artillery outfit. A dozen or more troops and a few newsmen sat in the warm sun in plain view of the enemy and looked at the battle.
"I never have seen anything like this, even in pictures," said Sgt. Heinrich Weller attached to the 1st Jaeger Division as an artillery observer.
Neither had any of us.
Shells were bursting on the ground east of the city, where the Slavs had a battery of big guns blasting away at our positions. We could see the flash of these guns and the enemy walking about them.
Observers finally ranged in on the positions and gray bursts from our shelling mushroomed up. "Lay something on them!" shouted Captain Johann Muller, an artillery battery commander, " This is something that happens to a mortar man only once in a lifetime--to be able to fire like this at extreme range."
"That's what I'm doing," said the observer.
Shells then were crashing on the enemy location. Soon four or five guns were silenced but the Slavs would run from underground shelters at intervals, fire their remaining weapons and run back to their shelter.
"We've got them running around like wild men," chortled Sgt. Weller. Below us, troops carried dynamite to blow up a tunnel in a quarry. "We cleaned out that tunnel yesterday, or thought we had," said Weller. "But it is a regular rabbit warren of holes and tunnels. This morning Slavs came out with a machine gun and gave us more trouble. We tried to get them all out but they won't come so we are going to blow up the entrance and seal the whole thing."
Through a high-powered telescope I watched a Jaeger patrol working its way toward the city, feeling out defenses and checking each house along a road. It was apparent they were meeting no opposition. Across a narrow valley on the next ridge there was a movement of men. They were identified as Jaegers of another unit. From within the fringe of the city came an awful grinding noise, the screech of shells and bursts of explosive which erupted flame and smoke on our right flank. The Slavs were firing their heavy artillery, which has a terrifying sound.
In the trees behind the bluff, a square-jawed colonel formerly from Graz called his officers together.
"We attack at 1400 hours (2 p.m.)," he said and pointed to a position on a map. "We're sending a unit in to cut the road here before we make a move toward the main part of Zagreb and I want each man to keep strict control of his unit."
His men lounged about him--dirty, tired and unshaven. They had had little sleep for the past 60 hours because when they had a chance for rest the enemy usually was shelling them with big guns.
"Cannons?" said the colonel.
"Yes sir," said Capt. Muller.
"I want you to be ready to give prompt support on the crossroads here and on this main east-west road."
"We're ready, sir."
"If there is any movement of troops toward our flanks, I want mortars, cannon and artillery to hit 'em hard."
"I want the same formation we had yesterday. If we come under fire from a building, I want infantry guns as the base of fire and I want you to destroy the building. I understand this infantry worked very well yesterday and I want to same thing today."
“Dismiss”.

Memories of General Radovan Mladic
Commander 2nd Revolutionary Division
100 kms. South of Pecs, Hungary
January 10, 1940
On January 10th the division stands to as the enemy has broken through the 272nd Infantry Division's positions between Pecs and Villany (1). The enemy is repulsed with a counterattack and denied a breakthrough to the Danube. About 50 prisoners are taken during the action.
During the early afternoon, I am surprisingly ordered to the IV Corps to report to our Supreme Leader President Karlovakzac, that was touring the front areas. The President expresses his recognition of the division and regrets he can not visit us due to lack of time, he later asks me for an appreciation of the situation. I reply, "We must expect a German offensive during the next four days, driving south from Pecs on our direction. The aim of the attack will be to smash the right wing of our Corps, the last major unit left in ethnic Hungarian territory, to enable them to advance into the heart of our nation. The division will fight and the soldiers will die in their positions, but they will not prevent the German tanks from rolling over their bodies and marching on Subotica and Novi Sad (2). The enemy's overwhelming command of the air makes tactical manoeuvre virtually impossible. The fighter-bombers even attack individual dispatch riders. Redeployment of the smallest units, let alone massed concentrations, can not be carried out without serious losses because of continuous air surveillance. The road network is under their control day and night. A few fighter-bombers are enough to delay or even stop movements. President, give us an air umbrella, give us some fighter units! We are not afraid of the enemy ground forces, we are powerless against the concentrated air operations."(3)
It would have been better not to have made that last request. I see that I have touched on a sensitive area. The President says excitedly, "Why are you telling me this? Do you believe that I drive around with my eyes closed? I have received report after report. Our encounter with the Germans the last time destroyed the majority of our air units and what is left was sabotaged by treacherous elements of the Old Regime. But rest assured the guilty parties still left in our country will pay for the deads of our gallant soldiers. I understand you mean no harm in your comments and you’re concerned with the well being of your troops so I take no offense to your comments.”
I still apologize to the President and he takes a few minutes' stroll before he bids me a fond farewell. The Corps Commander asks the President to be careful and avoid the main road. He suggests that his big car be exchanged for a military truck. The President refuses with a smile and drives away. A great man and a great leader! His presence infuses me with a new desire to stop the German onslaught before they enter our ethnic lands. With God’s help we will prevail.
