Bright day
What if Tom Selleck plays Indiana Jones? He turned the role OTL fro his already signed Magnum PI, but then the show started filming later, which would have allowed him to do both things. So WI the producers relent?

The movies flop. Selleck is a good actor but his one problem is that he's just too damned good looking to be believable. His 'breakthru' roles on Rockford Files had him play just that sort of character. Also his voice is all wrong.

He did Magnum well through just overpowering this failing with repeated sterling acting performances to establish depth.

He only got away with Quigley because it was such an unusual role and with Sackett because Sackett is an Archetypal Hero and we expect him to be handsome.

That movie where he played the misogynist pilot. Interesting plot and pretty woman, but a flop, he's just unbelievable as anything like a regular person.

Dr. Jones is an archeologist, true...but his appeal, at least as played by Harrison Ford, is that he's a regular guy facing down insurmountable odds. Who would you rather see facing down the Third Reich and a whole slew of cultists---Ford's Indy, or Selleck's?

Then there's the other Q---how would the famous scene in Raiders play out, the one where the henchman brandishes a sword and Indy just shoots him? IIRC, the scene was filmed that way since Ford was, um, realllly sick. He didn't want to do a big fight sequence as originally intended, so the scene was re-written, and Indy just shoots the guy, and well...film history was made.

The Americans like people who are practical and people who are honest. It is in their nature.

They equate good-looking with honesty. There is nothing wrong with this. Most nations do it. It may be incorrect but what you gonna do?

Harrison Ford was good-looking. He was also practical (he was a set carpenter before he became a star.) There is no way Tom Selleck, charming star though he is, could match him for the role of Indiana Jones, Han Solo or indeed the President of the USA.

My proof of this is that there was a poll among Americans who voted Harrison Ford the best president they ever had (See Air Force One) They also voted Martin Sheen the second best. Whether the Yanks were being sarcastic remains a mystery. Best left that way.

Ford may be a handy carpenter but he always comes of as childish in the movies. Its like a 8 year old who tries to get the girl by picking on her. Indy isn't a boy and if he was, there a lot of better choises. Tom Cruise comes to mind.
