What if he made it into the Monkees? Would Sharon Tate and the other killed by his "family" still be alive? Would the Monkees have ended up as a real rock group? Would they still be recording today?

It never would have happened. Manson would need to audition, but he was in jail at the time of the audtiions. ;) The being said, it would depend upon who he bumped. Lose Nesmith or Tork and you lose the creative professional musicians of the group. Lose Dolenz, and you lose the comedian of the group. Lose Davey Jones and you lose the love interests of the group. They gelled very well together. Mess up that dynamic and chances are that the group probably wouldn't last long. Manson wasn't really all that talented a actor or musician. Without these 4, I honestly think the group is sunk. Despite what people tend to think all 4 of the members of the Monkees were talented musicians and it showed that in their very first self produced album Headquarters, which vyed for the top of the album charts with the Beatles' Seargent Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band album in the summer of 67. They sold more albums than Elvis and the Beatles in 1967 AND hold the record for most number #1 albums in a year with 4 in 1967, something I don't think modern musicians can do, given how much production goes into modern albums. They were a real band. They did play their own instruments and write their own songs. Their use of session musicians during recording their albums was no different than any other band at the time, the British press just wante to make an issue out of it at the time in order to have some sort of controversy at the time when the Monkees were touring in the UK. The fact of the matter is, the Beatles respected the Monkees and they even hung out together while the Monkees were in the UK. The song "Randy Scouse Git" tells the story of their time together as well as other events from that trip (like Dolenz meeting his wife.) The song refers to the "The Four Kings of E.M.I.", who were the Beatles. Time for me to break out my Monkees box set and listen. :p

You may need to scroll down to get the link for this topic...

Anyway, in addition to prison for much of the mid-60s, Manson would have been too old to try The Monkees' try-outs (held around 1965-66). The article does state that he hung around that scene (incl. musicians) during that period, including the Beach Boys, however.

After looking at the article--a more likely scenario is WI Stephen Stills or Paul Williams had joined The Monkees. Hmmm...

Hmmm Stephen Stills for Tork and Williams for Jones? Interesting.

Now I have the correct info.

Perhaps this thread should have been, "WI: Sharon Tate hadn't been killed?"

Now this is really interesting...

If that is the topic (WI Sharon Tate still alive?), then what happens to her and Roman Polanski? How long do they stay married--this is the entertainment biz after all--and what about their kid(s)? Tate was just shy of giving birth when Manson dropped by. What about her movie career? I suppose in this TL Polanski doesn't get caught for statutory rape, or at least not as early as OTL, and isn't forced to stay out of the US. What about Polanski's film career--does he still do Tess, The Pianist...Pirates?!? Then...what about the changes to the California corrections system, pushed by Tate's mother in our TL?

And as for the thread topic...what about the Monkees?

I don't think that Sharon Tate's living or dying would have had any affect on the success of the Monkees.

Of those that tried out and were passed over, I'd much prefer Hutton over Williams as a Monkee,to go along with Stephen Stills in beating out Davy and Peter in another time line, so I couldve taken Mickey, Mike, Danny and Stephen.........The Monkees
