Tsar Nicholas and military advisors begin a council in regards to the current tactics in use by the Russian Army
Later that year reforms are implimented, starting with training. Heavy emphasis is placed on marksmanship and the bayonet charge is virtually eliminated from the program. Vetran troops are cycled through an abbreviated training program executed while in the field.
The Krnka Breechloading rifle enters service with the Russian army.
1857
Giant space badgers consider invading Earth, but decide to dig huge canals on Mars instead.
Army reforms progress. Many of the Napoleonic commanders who refuse to adapt 'retire'. The tradition of marching with bayonettes fixed is abolished.
Nicholas I passess laws which begin the process of freeing the Serfs.
The Hagia Sophia is rechristened as an Orthodox church, the historic icons are replaced and the building is reconstructed to closely resemble its state in the 1400's.
Due to lack of funds, plans to arm five regiments entirly with breechloaders are cancelled. Instead a single platoon in each regiment is issued with breechloading weapons.

Program of retiring all-wood ships begins, most are sold to other countries. They to be replaced with ironclad warships.
Minor wars in Central Asia extend Russia influence to the border with Afghanistan.
1959
Military shakeups result in a plot to assassinate the Tsar by some of the more traditional higher-ranking officers. The plotters succede in stopping the Tsars carriage, but are killed by the Tsars guards.
The survivors of the plot are exiled to Siberia or executed.
Plans for a Trans-Siberial Railroad begin, but lack of funds prevents the project from getting past the conceptual phase.
Instead, a line between Moscow and Constantinople is planned and construction on it begins prior to the end of the year.
