HISTORY 1855-1860
1855 – Portuguese claim Angolan territory north of the base at Ambriz. Britain refuses to recognize Portuguese territorial rights to the region.
1856 – Portuguese discover surreptitious slave trade between Malagasy and Mozambique supplying Arab nations and the Ottoman Empire with African slaves. Unfortunately, slavery will not be abolished in overseas territories for another thirteen years.
1857 – Portuguese begin missionary work in Abyssinia (Ethiopia).
1858-1860 – China continues to refuse ratification of the official cession of Macau to Portugal.
