I voted for the 1880s being the ideal time to start but honestly, anything before that's fine by me too. Anything beyond, well, it's too late to be interesting until you get to about the 1930s where I think too much would have changed in a rather long period of time.

I voted 1860 as it gives a short timeline to do but long enough afterwards to let people do what they want.

1860, because long alt hist timelines cause headaches.
Gives a bit of time for recovery from the war, yet not enough time for anything major to happen.
