was that one of the many times Venice (the nation) was excommunicated? (seriously, it happens)

I don't know how many times it happened, but this is probably the last.

How could a war start? Maybe the Venetians get the promise of French help and refuse any sort of compromise. Then again, the settlement they got in OTL was almost completely in their favor. So let's say the Papacy feels emboldened by Habsburg support and/or paranoid about Venice turning Protestant.
