So I have the Wiki up and running (and basically empty), *except* for a proper idiot-resistant readme. There are links to the documentation that came with the wiki but they're not really idiot-resistant.

Test it out and let me know any thoughts, concerns, whatever.

Um I guess I really need to write that readme.

Guys, to create a new document docname you do the following:

1. Edit an existing page and create a link like offtopic:docname (offtopic is the directory name, we're using that directory since goatism is off topic).

2. The link will appear red because the page doesn't exist yet. Click on the link and then you will be able to create the page and put stuff in it.

Flocc, I don't know how you managed to make the goatism article *without* any other pages linking to it. But probably the best thing to do would be to create, for example, an offtopic:AH.COM religions link on the offtopic page, create that new page, and add descriptions of goatism, sheepism, etc. there.

Got 3 in there, if you've done anymore just put them in, I'll put them in alphabetical/join order tomorrow. This way we actually have a repository of them, as there didn't seem to be any actual page linking to Ward.

Also, try and keep the details of a person to what's on their profile, so if you happen to know, for example, doctor what's real name, number and address, don't just put it up for anyoen to see.

Bugger it. All right, we'll stop that. All my ones link from Offtopic, which I would have thought would be the right category for member articles; unfortunately, I can't work out how to link to other categories (e.g. in my Flocc article I've put in a preliminary link for his TLs, but they all read "offtopic:Anglo-Dutch Empire" etc. )

Max Sinister
July 26th, 2006, 03:17 PM
Yep, that's the namespace problem.

If you are working at the article "Flocculencio" in the namespace "offtopic", and want to link to the TL "Anglo-Dutch Empire" in the namespace "timelines", you have to make it like that: timelines:Anglo-Dutch Empire, not just Anglo-Dutch Empire. And if you want to put a backlink into that article, it has to be offtopic:Flocculencio, not just Flocculencio.

And I wasn't screaming at anyone specifically.

Thanks. Message received and understood.

Merry, I'd include a subheading under each member's article labelled "In the Series", like I did one for luakel saying "In Fiction", talking about his role in Luaky Commer & AH.com Wars.

Straha

Straha is perhaps one of the most-recognized members of AH.COM, but, like Luakel (who he has a bit of a feud with), his honourable member status is disputed. This is because he is quite trollish in his posts, and often says things that go over the line. His timelines are recognized for many things, including an American owned Mexico, large German and South African (see Draka) powers, very dystopic qualities (which he claims are only to "spice things up"), and often very specific politics in the USA and CSA. He is also known for practically ruining DBWI threads by posting very dystopic events in the first few posts.

In Chat, many regard him as a trolling pothead, though he disputes the latter by saying he's only smoked once. He often hazes n00bs, and is usually the first one on the scene when someone else is trolling, eagerly yelling "BAN HIS ASS!" He was also one of the main characters in the Sheep Thread.

The Series-

Straha plays the role of annoying but slightly lovable atheist pothead on the ship. He's often stoned out of his mind, and this leads to a love-hate relationship with the strongly religious Othniel, who often tries to steal his pot and convert him.

I want to write an article about the Map Thread, but I don't know which namespace to put it in (or create a new one?? I mean, it's in Books, Games and Videos, but it's not really related to any of that). As it's an AH.com legend, perhaps it could go in Off-topic?

AFAIK it does not include an underscore. I removed it from the link in your article and it still worked fine.

(I don't think it matters if there's a space, because Wiki counts an underscore as a space - but with 'Dark_Slavik' that wouldn't have worked, because his name is DarkSlavik, one word).

How do I post images? I don't understand the syntax instructions.

1. Go to the page where you want to upload or use the image. This is because the image is going to go into the namespace (directory) where that page is.

2. On the "toolbox" menu on the lower left, click "Upload file".

3. Use the browse button to choose the file to upload.

4. If you want to store the file using a different name than it already has, put that name in the "Upload As" box.

5. Click "Upload".

Now the file is stored on the server in the same directory as the page you were viewing. For example if you were viewing page offtopic:diamond and uploaded image "nopants.jpg", then the file is located at . The curly brackets are used for files, whereas the square brackets are used for links.

So to display the image on a page, just add . If you add a file that is *not* an image, it will just be a link to the file.

You can also have the image display at a different width and height. To display nopants.jpg as 300x200 pixels, use .

I'm having a bit of a problem. I go to edit a page or something like that and then I'm immediately logged out before I can begin my work.

Anyone else having this problem?

That's a good point - should we host maps on photobucket/imageshack from now on, instead of using up the board's Bandwidth?

BREAKING NEWS: A tablet from Babylonian times has been discovered.

Translation;

"And thus ten ten ten five two spake, "The place in which mapps are kept shall be closed soon, I expekt." And the Pantless demon did appeal to the Lord of creayshun, whose name is revered by the pbuh, and the mapps were saved."

In other words: People have been saying that since before you were born, old-timer.

If you're gonna add something to the wiki, could you please keep the formatting, I've noticed people adding members to the honourable members listing seemingly at random.

EDIT: There was something I was going to say... Something about avoiding the doubling up of pages, i.e. do we need an honourable members page and a member list? Perhaps have the member list just link to the actual forum page?

I added GBW and Michael to the list of Writer Chimps as they have 2 episodes each and each had contributed to the Halloween Special. Objections?

Just as it says: The honourable members are those who aren't n00bs, while the big member list contains everyone. And the forum's member list isn't editable.

Today, when I want to edit a page, I can't see the little icons (for italics, bold etc.). All I see is "image image image image . . ." in Opera, and "X X X X . . ." using Internet Explorer.

I could see them yesterday. Where have they gone?

They keep going on and off for me. It doesn't really matter, because if you just wave the cursor over the Xs, it pops up labels telling you what they are.

Some suggestions to Ian what we could need:

- A permanent link to the wiki from the front page of both the site and the forum. For now, I'll sticky this thread, so we won't lose it.

- Does dokuwiki have templates we could re-use for entries for countries, kings and so on?

Also, I can't believe I Can't Believe It's Not Butter is not butter, either. I can be somewhat naive about certain things.

Can someone do me (oo-er), otherwise I'll have to do myself and it won't be nearly quite as much fun (oo-er again).

I'll be most obliging to the ghost writer and fill them in (sigh... another oo-er) in an appropriate manner with all my secrets.

I shall provide a pic for it later on. Must dash, there is a bottle of wine with my name on it.

I have edited the wiki to remove all references to "honourable member" status and naming of anyone as a "n00b" (except for Luakel who supposedly is OK with it).

This board is not a popularity contest and people will be judged by what they say, not by how they're viewed by whoever edits the Wiki the most. If you want to publicly and permanently form cliques and slam others, I suggest you try http://www.hotornot.com.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Just a comment about S.M. Stirling's entry- since, unlike the rest of us, he is a semi-public figure (being a published writer) and since his username is an email address, perhaps it might not be appropriate to have an entry for him under that username unless he okays it. Just a thought- after all, it is an email address. Maybe the article could simply be titled "S.M. Stirling"

This is not an official "I hate thee" thing.

With that said, ...

Ian;

I know that your valiant efforts in making everything equal is for the good of the board. I do note that the whole erasure of the post count did set people at ease. That was fine by me.

However, the whole thing about the "Honourable Member" is - to my eyes - not prejudical. It's more of a commonly shared background than anything else. There's a lot of the posters from the old board that didn't make it in the transition; thus it is that those of the old board that do survive have a common interest.

Perhaps - in my humble opinion - you could restore the title with a specific preface stating that while the "Honourable Member" status is not a position of rank - but of a shared background and that it does not mean any offense to those that might be offended from it in the present and/or the future.

I do note that within the AH.Com Series there is the same premise of a 'clique' featured in those that people it. That is a point in justifying a similar trait within this board. I do not mean any offense by it.

With that said, perhaps you could extend the status of "Honourable Member" those that also joined in the transition.

These are just several points in which I believe, in my humble opinion, justify the status of "Honorable Member" within the wiki. I am not as verbose as my collegue posters as Dr. What or Leo; it's just that I believe that some vesitude of a commonly shared background of being three acute definitions {old poster, noted poster in the new board, those that survived the transition} needs to be preserved. Other definitions within the status of being a prolific poster of this 'clique' that has evolved in this forum could also be optioned if necessary.

I end this opinion simply on the note that I do not mean any offense to the posters, to you specifically, to your opinions, and to the other posters such as Urkel/Thermo/Haggis that have arisen recently.
