With a POD no earlier then the Tunguska comet incident, find a way that Siberia would be a nuclear wasteland, yet the world as a whole would be (relatively) peaceful. Saying "Tunguska Comet was bigger" does not count.

Soviets perform a lot more nuclear tests with bigger and bigger bombs, maybe even with the supposed 100-megaton Tsar Bomba?

How about a good old fashioned Chernobyl meltdown--only this time they don't succeed in stopping it before it gets totally out of control as in OTL.

Chernobyl was in the Ukraine. For this to happen lots of Russia would be irradiated.
Instead of the popular comet theory, what about an alien space ship that detonates with the force of 100mt or so. There goes Siberia.

A 1964 nuclear engined "Superraket" launched from Svobodniy cosmodrome crashes back on its base, taking out two more stored Supperakets, irradiating a radius of 500 miles

I know Chernonyl was in the Ukraine (actually had a friend travelling though the area when it blew). I'm talking about Chernobyl-style meltdown in some reactor there.
Insomnia is really starting to mess me over--can't even write coherent sentences anymore.

Well--if you believe some of the stories, Tunguska was supposed to be an alien ship exploding. Russians actually made a (surprisingly) good sci-fi movie on that back in the 50's.
How about a missile silo accident?

Dude--insomnia is nothing to make fun of, ok? I get killer attacks of it every now and then and go for a week or so with 4 or 5 hours of sleep in total--makes me EXTRA cranky.
Don't make me post the goatse site as retribution.

Forget it--insomnia is fucking me up big time-- :o
That's it!! I have no other choice--going to have to steal some dope from my sister and smoke some of it--dope always puts me to sleep (the main reason why I never did the stuff in university--too many parties passed out at)

Maybe the russians break all their shovels and drills and try a different way of mining the minerals there.
