I'm talking about an American Empire in the late-19th century lasting into 21st-century.

in my altenrate draka TL I have the USA having all of north america,the carribean,the pacific islands,japan,british/french/dutch guinana,the phillipines and eastern new guinea. By 1890 the USA is THE strongest power but doesn't know it.

America is already a empire.
Like with Russia it had free land bordering it so it could expand there instead of having to go overseas. Since the American empire was so near to the capital it could be incorporated into America proper so it remains whilst the others went apart.
Probally not explained well as its late but you should know what I'm getting at.
