As Straha points out, the currents make it likely that Portugal will hit on Brazil; but assuming they decide to focus on North America instead:

It probably ends up dominated by the French; the Portuguese would have no desire to settle in America, and while they'd probably try to trade furs, it would be a very small scale effort.

There was also the dutches who tried, and in OTL, they had one of the three Guyanas, Surinam.

I like the idea of British Brazil. Why not take it further. What if Britain would have discovered America and colonised Brazil. The French maybe would have colonised the rest of south america and middle america. And the spanish and portugese would have gone to north america.

I doubt Britain would have been able to successfully exploited 'Brazil' or 'New Atlantis' since all trade with it would have had to cross shipping lanes heavy with Spanish traffic. I think the presence of Spain and its trade with either Central or North America will present lines of supply between London and 'Brazil' that could be cut at will by the Spanish.

So how about Britain getting Brazil after Spain declines? Say, after succesfully taking Buenos Aires and La Plata/Patagonia region.

What does Spanish decline have to do with Brazil - its a Portugese possession. All the points you mention are in Argentina. Brazil is further north.

I suppose it would be possible for the Dutch to suceed in managing to capture the Northern part of Brazil for a longer period of time, and then have the English take that from the Dutch.

What about some sort of English-Portuguese union? (Charles II and Catarina
of Braganza for example with some deaths to make it work out) That might make for some sort of mix in North and South America.

It probably wouldn't work due to religious differences, but both are opposing the Dutch and Spanish and it would give each other reason to be dabbling in areas where natural sea lanes would imply they should be elsewhere.

You said it yourself...

Weaker Spain means it cannot control it's shipping lanes properly, thus eventually allowing England to work it's way up to Brazil.

And I also said 'Brazil is a Portugese possession' which it is for most of its history.

doubt i can offer much for this thread, but since we're stuck on a name,if the British discover and Colonise Brazil it could be called Virginia if they reach and try and settle it in Queen Elizabeths reign. before trying for OTL Virginia.

otherwise, maybe Nova Albion?

I think the British would be more likely to colonize Argentina or Chile than Brazil. Both have much more temperate climates.

If the British did in fact own Brazil, I would suspect that the Ethnic Makeup of the Country would be far more "white" and much less "black", since the British outlawed slavery fairly soon among Western Nations.
