DBWI: Mongols head west

I've been reading quite a bit about the history of China lately and it got me to thinking- what if the Mongols headed west and invaded Europe like countless other asian tribes before them?
One interesting thing is that they would be coming up against Rus first- talk about jumping in the deep end.
How far could they possibly get?
How would their attack impact the development of the world?

I know its a bit ASB to have them heading west when they have China under their heal and India just next door but...meh :p

They never went to India in OTL. China and the outlying regions were enough for them.

Perhaps they don't conquer Japan? As I remember, wasn't the first attempt unsuccessful? Perhaps with everything in the west tying them down, they would have given up?

This might be a good thing for Europe, it might be bad. On the one hand, if they devastate the Islamic world, it helps out Europe. But they might convert to Islam, which would be bad in the long run. Reverse the situation if they go into Europea.

I highly doubt that. The Ottomans and Seljuks were still fighting each other and practicing primitive agriculture when the Age of Imperialism swept them up.

Supposing that the Rus survive at all, I imagine that they would have to evolve into a very warlike culture. Imagine the ripple effects that it could have if Kiev was able to unite the various Rus tribes, maybe even all of the slavs of the east! The Finns, Magyars, and Rumanians would have to fight from both the east and west if they hoped to survive to modernity.

That's a good point, though, as it turns out, the Finns are under the Swedish Crown as it is.
