WI the North had done more about undoing the damage of the war, had offered the same kind of compensation for disabled Confederates and widdows as was given to US troops, but at the same time insisted on full Civil Rights for former slaves and still took on the planter class and offered the 40 acres and a mule as well as voting rights and education.

I know this is unlikely.

If, perhaps, Lincoln had survived - shot but not in the head but the rest of Booth's mates had managed to kill their intended victims.

Given how japan and germany have fully recovered and gotten over the war this would lead to better race relations in dixie. Jim crow wouldn't ever go into operaqtion.

Don't quite think thats a good analogy since both countries were predominately homogeneous in race - the Japanese even more so. However, as examples for economic aid and its influence in benefiting a destroyed nation and putting them on the road to a quick economic recovery it fits the bill.

Besides everybody knows that Jim Crow originally emmigrated from the North into the South. There were alot of 'sundown' or 'sundowner' towns in the American Midwest well into the 1960s.

For an ACW analogy, imagine that Haiti ruled the whole Caribbean and had allied with the Union in the Civil War (and took most of the casualties). In this scenario Radical Reconstruction would work just fine, as white Southerners would have been too terrified of being abandoned to the mercy of the Haitians to defy the US Federal Government.

The northern bankers wanted all the profits from the plantations to go towards paying off their mortgages on southern plantations. The southern plantation owners wanted the profits to go to them.
So paying pensions to Confederate veterans was strongly opposed by both northern and southern establishments. We would have had as much chance of doing that as of paying pensions to elderly slaves.
