Well, as we know Avidius Cassius thinking that Marcus Aurelius had died because an illnes in the german limes , he decided to proclaim himself emperor, after when he realizes that Marcus Aurelius had not died, he decided to continue with the rebellion (but with all the veteran troops of the limes at the disposition of Marcus Aurelius and with all the empire loyal to Marcus Aurelius with the exception of Siria, Palestine and Egypt that are loyal to Avidius the luck of this civil war would be a defeat for Avidius, before any combat begins Avidius was murdered by his own men temerous of the represalies of Marcus).
But What if Marcus Aurelius death is real (his illnes is worse than in OTL and he dies) an not a false new.
With the real death of Marcus Aurelius in this ATL, Avidius proclaims himself emperor and protector of the son of Marcus Aurelius Commodo.
The senate after realizing of the death of Marcus Aurelius supports him, and without a clear leader (Commodo is only 13 years old) the commandants of legions in Germania knowing also the great affect that Marcus Aurelius had of Avidius and the fact that this proclaims his will of continuing the work of Marcus Aurelius after some reluctance the legions of Germania accepts him as emperor.
What are your opinions about Avidius Cassius becoming emperor? What changes in the history of Roman Empire would have the reign of Avidius Cassius and possible succesors?
Opinions, comments, ...:)
