Yes Im a role-playing geek. This is a relatively new game set in the modern world where our world meets the fantasy world, but the books dont give you any set story, just ideas you can use, now I am the Game Master of this particular game, and I just wrote this world into existence, tell me what you think.

Scientists aren't certain when it happened, nor can they seem to agree with who is at fault, but one thing is certain, it happened. The most popular theory as to what happened was the dropping of two nuclear weapons at the same exact time on opposite ends of the world, on June 5, 1987 the United States tested a nuclear weapon in the Nevada desert, ironically the Soviet Union tested a weapon in the Siberia wasteland at the same exact time. The twin blasts opened up what scientists called the shadow. As the world passed through the shadow, strange events unfolded throughout the world including loss of communication with entire parts of the world, all the worlds governments were baffled, telling the public it was sunflares and the problem should be resolved soon. For the time the Earth passed through the shadow all air traffic, and long distance travel was suspended until further notice, panic and fear gripped the populace of the world.

Three weeks later Earth emerged from the shadow a very different place. Entire populations had dissappeared only to be replaced by new civilizations. The world wide phenomenon caused panic and grief as relatives tried desperatly to find their lost loved ones. Yet other strange events followed.

In the Leningrad, USSR something was amiss at the old Winter Palace of the Tsar's. Upon further investigation it was discovered Tsar Nicholas II and his family were residing in the palace as if it were 1916, this bizarre event wouldnt be the only of its kind. Throughout Europe the victims of the Nazi Holocaust had respawned in crowded camps. In the America's native American's had experienced a literal over night population boom as patches of independent nations appeared in the United States and Canada. In Mexico, A large portion of the south had vanished to be replaced by a modern Aztec civilization, including the capital of Mexico City. An international force authorized by the UN scrambled to set up a workable Mexican government in Monterrey. The Aztec's were joined by the Mayans, Incas, Hittites, Byzantines, amongst others as the civilizations to replace entire populations. Ancient cities long abandoned and in ruins became modern metropolises bustling with life of the surrounding culture. Babylon and Ninevah became Arabic centers, Troy, Karakoum, Memphis, Ani and Carthage were just a few among many ruins brought back to life after passing through the shadow.

Amongst the strange happenings was the sudden advancement of the second and third world nations to the living standards near that of the west. It wasnt uncommon for African's to have a chicken in every pot, and a car in every garage. Although the living conditions were greatly improved, in the third world, it was closer to that of the 1940s-50s America than the 1980s.

Perhaps the most frightening were the appearences of non-human species throughout the world. Dwarven caverns were carved under the great mountain ranges as mighty Kingdoms. It was now the Dwarves that controlled the underground industries such as diamonds, and coal, etc. The great forests were now occupied by elves who were mistrustful of humans and would attack anybody/anything that attended to do harm to the forests. Orcs overran the sewers of major cities, venturing out at night only to loot and take unsuspecting humans as slaves. Goblins became feared predators of the swamps, halflings had civilizations in the rolling planes, gnomes became a common sight in human cities. But even more frightening creatures passed through the shadow, the Mongolian Deathworm, Mothman, amongst others became regular or semi-common occurences of the world.

Whatever the case, passing through the Shadow has changed the world, and for brought humanity closer than it has ever been before. No longer did humans hate eachother because of skin color, religion, or sexual orientation, now they had new species to hate and fear. The United Nations saw the worlds governments begin to handover increasing power, giving birth to what many call the New World Order. But not everyone was happy with the NWO, thus beginning the resistence. As the UN grows stronger, the Resistence grows more desperate and has sleeper cells all over the world.

It is theorized as the world passed through the shadow, it came in contact with alternate dimensions on the same course, taking pieces of each dimension it contacted with it, while leaving others behind. One thing is certain, the world will never be the same again.

What you think?

Reminds me of a line from Terry Pratchett:

"Black and white live in harmony and gang up on green."

Actually if you exploded two A-bombs at the exact same time you'd knock the Earth off it's axis and send it hurtling into the Sun.

(Now how many of you know which movie that's from?)

The GURPS Technomancer setting is a GURPS worldbook where magic came to the world--or back to the world--with an atomic detonation. Oppenhiemer's statement, "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds," completed an ancient incantation as the bomb burst over New Mexico.
The book portrays 1990-2000 or so in this world, becomeing adapted to magic, with all that it implies. It has holes, but also has magic fairly well integrated into modern reality. The technology spells are most useful, although woould take a lot of work to adapt to the D20 system.

Xen, have you ever played RIFTS? It's closer to what you propose than the Shadow of d20 Modern

It's kinda like Shadowrun, but with Diesel and not Cyberpunk.
