On July 4th, 1861, the Confederate States* vanish. All Union troops within their territory at that point are returned to their homes in the US, and all Confederate troops outside CS territory are returned to their homes in the CS.

The Confederate States reappear in July 4th, 1812, replacing the corresponding 1812 area (which includes Mexican as well as US territory). The War of 1812 was declared a month ago and so the US of the time is at war with Britain.

*Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississipi, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and the Indian Territory. Does not include Missouri, West Virginia or Kentucky.

Now what happens?

They rejoin the Union.

With their higher population and economic development, they become the dominant states once again.

I'm certain that any Union would make concessions to the Confederates to gain those profits.

Also, expect a lot of filibusters armed with 1860s tech.
