It irks me somewhat to see the apparent endless regurgitation of a victorious Confederacy, when a much more effective Union leader was distinctly possible... and I don't mean John Pope. Lincoln was casting about for a new commander of the Army of the Potomac after McC's failure before Richmond and his essentially treasonous foot dragging in the event leading up to 2nd Manassas. A division commander, Phillip Kearney, a one-armed veteran of the French & Austrian war while "observing" was among those considered. All I can find about him was that he was as agressive as McC was timid. He was killed at Chantilly during 2nd Manassas. Now, there's a WI for you. A Union victory in '62. Hmmmm? What next, then?
