WI it were revealed that the world has been secretly ruled by a consortium of wizards. They, not science or the gods, have actually been in charge of world affairs. They did this both by a direct application of the Hermetic arcana to chosen specific events and through controlling the extent to which magic works, or doesn't, in the overall world.
The reason that the ancient Greeks didn't further develop the Antikythera mechanism wasn't slavery or the lack of cultural antecedents but because magic made it not work. The reason Pasteurization functions so well now is because the wizards permit it, and have suppressed the disease spirits.
The revelation is by a series of documents proven genuine and both the substance in them and events unknowable except through them but corroborated by further research establish the truth of these documents beyond question. The identity of the present wizards is known to the governments of the world but, for now, a closely guarded secret.
