Hello folks, recently I have been working on a science fiction of my own. I doubt that I will ever achieve the success of Star Wars or Star Trek but I would like to share some of my ideas, and perhaps get some from you fine folks.

The story begins 700 years in the future around the year 2750 when the Earth is becoming so polluted human and all life as we know it struggles to survive on the surface. So I have Matrix style underground cities developing. Scientists are studying the possibilities of terraforming some planets in our system, such as Mars, Venus, and several moons of the gas giants. Especially when it becomes apparent man can't survive long in the underground cities. It is at this time humanity makes contact with the Gray's, and other races, among the aliens that cross path with humanity is the Yuan-Ti (for a lack of a better name right now). The Yuan-Ti, sees human's as perfect slaves and test subjects. They begin mutating humans with Yuan-Ti DNA to create a new race of foot soldiers, which are among the deadliest in the galaxy. Humans also make a tasty snackrafice to the Yuan-Ti pantheon of gods.

The Gray's are the most appauled by this, a fusion of human/Yuan-ti footsoldiers roaming across the galaxy, conquering everything in their path, and terraforming worlds to be fit only for the mighty Yuan-Ti Empire. The Galactic Alliance is formed, which human's fight valiantly for. The Yuan-Ti loses the war, but their Empire remains intact. Humans are able to acquire from the Yuan-ti technology to make terraforming possible, but the process is slow. A decision is made by the leaders of the Galactic Alliance to help humans in this transition, while Mars is terraformed to be the homeworld of humanity. During this time the Galactic Alliance constructs "Colonies" on Astroids and rusty hulls are melded together to form space stations.

The lack of a homeworld takes its toll on humanity, even with the Grand Assembly, leadership is lacking, and people begin searching for worlds already habitable. With new technology made available many humans have been bitten the "explorer bug" and have taken with members of other species to see the galaxy. They are also dedicated, loyal soldiers to the Galactic Alliance. But the galaxy is a large and dangerous place, after a century of an unstable peace, a new enemy reveals itself to humans, the Roach Thrall. The Roach Thrall attempt to sabotage the Martian Terraforming Project, seeing humans as little more than a disease, a blight on the galaxy.

The war with the Roach Thrall is much shorter than the Yuan-Ti War, however unlike the Yuan-Ti the Roach Thrall fight without honor, and thrive in the chaos of war, and off the remains of the dead. But it was a war the Galactic Alliance nearly lost, especially humanity due to its dividedness. With that in mind the Grand Assembly decided to begin the colonization of Mars. Prefrabicrated buildings were erected to form the first human Martian city, Olympus. It was here the Grand Assembly began construction of its new home.

The Terraforming of the Red Planet was nearly complete when Olympus was founded. The Agri-Corps were planting the Forrests and jungles of Mars, while scientists were cloning the animals that would inhabit the world with humanity and distributing them by climate.

Alright this is what I have so far, what do you think? Im considering the future of this galaxy, where humanity goes on to colonize other planets, including Earth, when technology allows for the cleaning of the envioronment and the restability of Earth's atmosphere. Any ideas to throw in?

Does FTL exist? Artifical Intelligence? Cybernetics? Genetic manipulation?

AI exists in the form of robots, not too far off base from C-3P0, but not AI as in the movie AI. Cybernetics is primitive, and Genetic Manipulation is what the Yuan-Ti was doing to the captured humans if thats what you mean.

Does Faster Then Light space travel exist?

I do plan on having a lightspeed or maybe "Wormholes" that can transport a ship from one location to another, perhaps a trip from Earth to Alpha Centari will take four months through the articially created worm hole.

How about jump gates, or jump points?

Thats pretty much what I meant by worm holes

Can you form both ends of the wormhole at different locations, arranging it by STL communications, or do you have to take one end of the wormhole to the destination at STL speeds?

(STL=slower than light)

To answer that question yes, they can be formed at two sides, the process is rather slow though and takes careful calculation, any slight error could be devestating.

personally, I've always favoured the MontyPython pronounciation: sky-fi. :P

You pronounce is "skiffy" to show contempt if it is very bad science-fiction. Often, it's a Hollywood B-movie, like Plan 9 From Outer Space or Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I personally can't decide which is worse...
