Did anyone but me read this book? Mostly it's about the states of Washington, Oregon and Northern California seceding and founding the first ecological state. There's a bit of AH in it... Quebec successfully secedes in 83, the Scandinavian states unite, but the Soviet Union's still alive in 2000 (although their Muslims want independence), the Vietnam War hasn't ended yet, and in addition, the US are fighting a similar war in Brazil.

Had to read it in school. Absolutely hated it. Was required reading for a 'History of Science Fiction' course I took. Funny how schoolwork can wreck all the joy in even the most enjoyable things.

I've heard of it. Didn't the author set up his ecological nation with a rather surprising amount of hand-waving, even by our standards? I recall stuff about fancy new clean-to-produce biodegradable plastics being used in everything, and the population of the West Coast abandoning television and Christianity en masse for community theater and some type of tree-worship.

Great book, but remember it's from 1975.
I also read Road to Ecotopia, a book about how ecotopia became to what it is in 2000.

Parts of it seemed way too idealistic for me. My outlook is that humans are quite nasty. Ecotopia ignores this (as does Marx, Smith, et al.)
Decent book, considering when it was written, and by whom. Hardcore environmentalists don't strike me as all that reasonable.
