We have had suggested that we have six judges, three lower and three upper.

Any ideas as to who should be in the role of judges?

How about Darkest90 as a judge? And Ward's son?

Guys- it might be a good idea not to nominate people who already have full time jobs- Dr. What is in foreign affairs and Sion is in engineering. Plus WeaponM is C-in-C of the Rangers and Militia.

I agree that Council Members should not also be judges.

Bulg, do you want more to be a judge or on the council? Also, I don't see having a judge also be the chief prosecutor...but we might have a rotation system, where our legal eagles take turns presiding, being the defender, and being the prosecutor.

I might delegate my job as supply manager to Wendy and a few NPC underlings (wouldn't be the first time a job is outsourced to a Chinese person  ), and apply for a nomination as judge.
I'm no particular expert on legal matters, though I did dabble in European constitutional law, but then I don't think that's a prerequisite at this point.

I nominate Steffen, him saying he knows of civil and criminal law. Any lawyers should be considered automatically.

Don't you have some experience/knowledge of foreign relations yourself? If I accept the coouncil seat for Foreign Relations, I would definitely have made Leo my deputy minister (or 'assistant council' or whatever term we will be using) and yourself as, er, deputy deputy minister or something, due to your civil servant experience.

Just a thought, if you're hesitant about the position as judge. I personally think you'll make a great judge.

Sounds good. And yeah, my main field of expertise is international relations. I did later specialize in European politics, but something tells me this kind of stuff isn't going to be very useful anymore...

Either would be fine.

Me? I had some law courses, but I´m not a lawyer.

Actually, Had I been born a year earlier, I would be a lay assessor (Schöffe) at the district court now.

And I have done two terms in my organsations arbitral court. That´s actually a cross-over between kindergarten and interpretation of statute.

I'll leave my job as chief prosecutor.

Damn, judge versus head of Science and Technology.......

Tough one, I'll mull it over at the library while I study for Persian, though I'm leaning towards being judge.....

So, who are the nominees thus far?

Floc
Doug Ward
Steffen
Hendryk
Darkest90
Bulg (maybe if he gives up Sci/Tech)

That would give us six, if Bulg takes it.

Just to note- I will most likely have to decline the nomination due to my full time job in the rangers. Would a military officer even be allowed to dispence justice in a civil court? Probably not.

Bulg wanted six, but maybe we can just make due with four for now, Doug Ward, Darkest, Steffen, and Hendryk.

I think we need at least 6, as we can very well have "hung" decisions. I envision a supreme court of sorts to be made out of our higher judges, and two just won't cut it, and one isn't good either.....

avoiding "hung" decisions: in case of equality of votes, the chairman or chief justice overvotes the others. We can add a clause to enlarge if neccessary.

Then what is the point of having the other judge if their vote isn't equal in value?

It pains me to say it, but I think I'll have to give up my post as Science and Technology Councilmen in favor of being a judge:( (provided I get on the High Court:rolleyes: ). As being a judge is only part time, I can act as an advisor if you all will allow.

I certainly hope that being a judge is at best a secondary activity. They are able bodied and able to work at other things also.

I agree the High Court is just to handle appeals so it would be part-time and I don't foresee a crime wave as is the people on this trek may not be above the norm in intellect but all of us seem to be law abiding people so I don't foresee a lot of court cases

Five, that way the votes are uneven unless someone abstains if we do this Supreme Court style. At least 3 judges to hear a case.

Unless the case is criminal, I would like to see an neutral try to help resolve issues before taking it to a judge. An agreed upon mediator.

Actualy the Sheriff could do this as he would be first point of contact anyway.part of his job is to keep molehills from becoming mountians

Hows about dropping the rangers and becoming chief domestic guard? any schlub can join the rangers ( Hell I considered it) I'd perfer you to be Sheriff rather then ranger (just my opinion, not trying to weaken the rangers)

Well that's flattering :o

Possibly something to consider for later in the game once the settlement is up and running and the Rangers are fully established. For now, MBarry needs me! :D

The other problem here is that I'm military trained not law-enforcement trained :p
