The Kingdom of Hawaii had not existed for before Captain Cook had discovered it. Its people had immigrated from Polynesia sailing great distances. The first encounter with the British did not go at all that well for either side. Yet it was that encounter which lead to its contact with the west. Relations improved over the years with the Hawaiian Kingdom developing relations with Great Britain and the United States. It also in the 19th Century had signed treaties with the emerging German Empire, Spain and France. Cooks visit and death did what ohter had been unable to do unite the people into a Kingdom.
The country saw the beginning of immigration from Portugal, the US, China and Japan and Korea. Its contact with the west increase and it saw Missionary Schools. The kingdom did not have mineral wealth but it did have a climate which allowed it to grow sugar, Pineapples, Bananas and other tropical fruit. It also developed ranches and raised Cattle.
For a good part of the 19th Century the port of Honolulu became a port of destination for Whaling ships as well as others.
Still by the time of the American Civil War it was clear that America more than any other nation was developing a closer relationship with the Kingdom. Many of the people that would play a role in the Kingdom had their roots in the US. One of those people was Standford Dole. His Father had come to the islands as a Missionary and teacher and his wife was a teacher.
The Island had developed its own Military patterning its army after the British. It had little in the way of a navy depending upon the American or British Navies for protection In the earlier part of the Century one of its Monarchs had gone to Great Britain for a visit to met with the Queen and instead he had contracted an illness that had resulted in the death of a family member in England and ultimately to his death upon returning to Hawaii. Many say that it was this incident that had changed the Island Nations path from Britain and toward the US. The nation had build some industry but it was still a long way from being an industrial Nation. Indeed it had to import a lot of Goods and mineral.
As the time drew closer to the Fall the nation had developed a small shipping line . The line had several ships built mainly overseas and this line carried immigrant and goods to the Nation. American Merchant ships were always arriving carrying material.
It ad been that death which had encourage the monarch to import western doctors. This had marked a turning point and it had the result of saving lives.
Below King David the Monarch during the period when the fall took place.

In 1843 a British Naval captain Sir Paulet sailed into port and threaten to fire upon the people unless it surrendered it Sovereignty. The King did that to avoid bloodsheed but one of his Ministers Dr Gernt Judd, Minister of Finance arraged for an envoy to go the the US and to the British.
Sir Paulets Superior sent a Frigate ordering Sir Paulet to withdraw. He notified the King that Hawaii's soverignty was restored.
After the French invaded the islands in 1849 committing much harm and damage to the people a treaty was signed by both Paris and London recognizing the Independence of the Kingdom. Britain's Queen _Empress formally acknowledged Hawaii as an independent Kingdom.
Yet relations between Hawaii and the Europeans began to cool while Hawaii turned to the US as its protector.
The Hawaiian native population suffered from European born infections declining to 80,000 before it began to increase. It however saw a rise in population as immigration from countries such as Portugal, the US, China and to a lessor extent Japan and Korea began.
The Royal Hawaiian Army began to be restored in the 1860's when the US was racked by Civil War. The Kingdom purchased modern rifles and cannon for its defense.
Hawaii grew and it gained much by the trade and new immigrants. Hawaii soon had its own shipping line and there was growth. Argiculture increased as Hawaii began to grow sugar cane, Pineapple, Bananas and other fruit. The Hawaains also began to emulate the Americans with the arrival of Cattle in the Islands.
Still no one believed that the world would within a few decades change forever. The end of the American Civil war saw an increase in trade and Immigration. The Island Population increased to more than 400,000. It had developed shipyard and a foundry was constructed.
The Islands soon had 5 newspapers and the beginning of a communication system such as the telegraph. Still it suffered from a lack of minneral resources that might allow it to progress. As the isalnds began to see more steamships it also saw a need for the importation of coal. The Hawaiian Flad now flew from a proud nation.
As the 1860's drew to a close things were looking up for the Nation.
The Hawaiian Parliament was also attempting to steer the nation into a more western course. While the Polynesian population had declined the population that was Hawaiian grew as more claimed Hawaiian citizenship. The Missionary Party was playing a role in this.

Then there is another person who will play a critical role in the history of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Stanford B Dole was born in the islands to American parents who came to do both missionary and educational work. While his father was involve in missionary work his mother was more involved in ensuring that the Hawaiian people were educated. She made sure that her son was well educated. And so he was. He gained Knowledge and eventually he became a lawyer and adviser to the King.

At the Time of the Incident (AKA The Fall) there were several foreign ships in port. After they sailed there was some shipping traffic but it gradually began to stop. The Hawaiian King and his advisers were always anxious to
find out what was going on. Gradually bits and pieces of information began to give them an idea that something horrible had happen to the world. One of the people that had made the islands his home was Captain Mclean.. The 45 year old Scottish born captain had taken a position with the Hawaiian shipping company. He was an experienced Sailor who had been at sea since he was 12 years old. He had gotten to know the King well over the past few years.

Hawaii's Army was very small and had been so since it had failed in its job but now it appeared that there might be a real threat. So the legislature passed a funding bill which would strengthen it and rebuild the Hawaiian Navy. It appeared that something had happen to their protector the United States and from the information that they now acquired by the few ships that were visiting the island the British Empire had suffered a major disaster. There were only two Occidental and Oriential Steamship Companie ships that had stopped at Hawaii. They did have some news and papers that were Months old. The Eastern Part of North America had suffered terribly. General Grant was attempting to Establish some sort of Government to Handle the Emergency.

The King called for a meeting with the legislatures leadership as well as his advisers. The decision was put forward that the supply of coal on the island was going to have to be controlled. There was no idea when and if the island would be able to get some more.
Peter Judd the son of Dr Gernt Judd , who had served as Finance Minister back in 1843 was following in his late father's footstep so to speak. He also was Finance Minister. He said that the country's treasury was in fairly good shape but the government would need more resources. Stanford B Dole was just appointed to fill a vacancy in the legislature/parliament and was asked to tak the new post of Naval Minister.
With a lack of coal and not a lot of wood to spare if they were going to build ships a decision was made to revert to sail power for them.
Captain Mclean was asked to help with his advise on construction. Below the Captain and his family at there home.

Very interesting. I'm not sure if Sanford Dole is a terrific choice. Walter Murray Gibson at least would side with the Crown. Charles Bishop would be another.
British Admiral Thomas restored Hawaiian independence, so that is why there is a Thomas Square in Honolulu.
The Kingdom of Hawaii did not exist for centuries before Captain Cook. They were united under King Kamehameha after the death of Cook.
An interesting POD would be the death of Kamehameha III in London due to pox or his scrape with death, in that it causes the Hawaiian Government to bring out more Western doctors and at least there is a concerted effort to staunch the high death rate among the native population.

Anyway, love the idea and love the fact that it's another spinoff for the "more plausible Peshawar Lancers" project. Good luck with it, I'm subscribing !

David many thanks for the suggestions as it will make things a lot more interesting.
The bringing in of Western doctors will also mean that the native Hawaiian population is far larger at the time of the fall than was the case in OTL.

I would consider an earlier date to the creation of both OTL Queen's Hospital and the Kapiolani Children's Hospital. It would also be important that branches be established on the other islands besides Oahu.

King Kamehameha III Hawaii's longest reigning Monarch was heavily impacted by the disastrous impact of the trip to London. He began to realize that his people would need proper Western style medical care if they were to stand a chance of surviving diseases. he return home and butted heads with his stepmother who was regent. He wanted the establishment of medical schools and hospitals but she would refuse to spend the money. He did however get her to allow the importation of doctors to the islands. Then he had a hospital built in Honolulu.
Upon finally gaining full power in 1832 he ordered the construction of three more Hospital. They would be located on three other islands including the big one.
The result of Improved medical care was a saving of many lives of both natives and Immigrants. It was the move to improve the health and education of his people that would have a lasting Impact on the Kingdom. The King would also establish more hospitals and a medical school would be established at Queen's Hospital.
The King also supported the Establishment of a police force after incidents with people stopping at Hawaii on their way to the California Gold field. It was pattern after the British police force.
The King managed to live slightly longer than in OTL dying in 1860.
His illegitimate son Albert Kumupeka was latter to take a post in the Royal Hawaiian Constabulary.

Relations with the United States became stronger but with the short reigns of Kamehameha III's successors there was not as much progress. However, the country had made great progress as a result of Public Health improvements and education.
Hawaii was however, the home to several shipbuilding companies. Unfortunately the lack of iron ore meant that these ships were almost always wood hulled. There was also a need to import coal.
The 1860's also saw the government once again see the need to strengthen its defenses and move toward the re-establishment of a Navy.
The American Civil War, The Invasion of Hawaii by the French in 1849 and the Mexican Intervention by France all weighed on the Hawaiian Monarchs Mind and that of his advisers. Breech loading guns were purchased from Great Britain as e]well as more modern small arms.

There would have to be the importantion of wood also if there is to be a shipyard. The tropical rainforest doesn't usually provide the type of wood, let alone the amount of wood, for shipbuilding on the scale of a western clipper or man of war.

One of the things that King Kamehameha III had done was to import some tree from the United States to Plant on the Big Island. It was his attempt to provide more alternative and choices for his people. Still there had to be a large importation for goods from the US, Canada.
As Hawaii developed a shipping industry it had to stockpile coal for its use in the Honolulu. Whalers such as the one below continued to stop at the Hawaiian Islands.

The Royal Hawaiian Artillery collection included field pieces that had seen service in the American Civil War but which had been declared surplus. They were bought for little money but provided Hawaii with some fairly advance field pieces. The Artillery collection included a wide variety of guns.

As we move close to the date of the Impact Hawaii saw the Funeral of the last of one Line of Kings and the beginning of another. Hawaii was moving closer to the US in relations and the British raised objections to it being Annex by the US.
This resulted in King Lunalito to ask the parliament for some changes in the country. The Country had gone through two Constitutional changes one in 1840 and another in 1850. Now 20 years latter the King was asking the Parliament to look at some changes that might strengthen the governments ability to protect the Nation. Unfortunately the Kings reign lasted barely 13 months.
Albert Kunupake had in this time shown a lot of ability as a police officer. In 13 years the Illegitimate son of the Late King Kamehameha III had shone a nack for police work rising to the rank of Inspector.
The funeral of King Lunalito was held at the Palace.

Shipping I can see, particularly transpacific between North America and the Orient and Australia.
There was an attempt recently to grow fast maturing trees to provide wood for lumber and housing stock. I doubt, unless you are provide better information, that Hawaii would be able to produce the sheer square footage to build a major ship, let alone it being the right type of wood.
chris N
April 22nd, 2012, 12:23 PM
It would seem that from what I have been able to find so far only two trees native to Hawaii would have any possible use in shipbuilding the Silky Oak and the Northfork Pine. Unless other trees can be introduced I would suspect that a lot of lumber would as you said be needed to build ships. There are other woods that would be usable for decking and doors but unless either of the two trees mentioned are usable then I think that massive importation would be needed or Hawaii would have had to buy more ships built in Great Britain, Canada or the US.
David S Poepoe
April 22nd, 2012, 04:33 PM
The Silky Oak was introduced to Hawaii in 1859, but was probably widespread thru out the islands by 1880, so can't be considered native. It apprently was used a veneer in the world furniture trade.
The Northfolk Pine is not an actual pine tree, but looks similar. I recall many were used as Christmas trees.
Historically, it has been very hard to establish an export product for Hawaii. The government tried all sorts of things, coffee was first grown there in the 1800s, but other places can produce more than a mere island chain.
chris N
April 22nd, 2012, 05:28 PM
It does seem that Hawaii has few exports other than making a material that is very similar to Portland Cement. I have still been looking to see if other types of trees might be able to grow in Hawaii like the Italian Pine. I see that there are walnut tree that grow in Hawaii but while a very nice wood I am not sure how good it would be in the construction of warships. For now I will just have to saw that before the fall the Hawaiian Shipyards had received a shipment of lumber. It does However appear that starting with Captain Cook there has been a lot of effort to grow other types of trees in Hawaii and many of them have been successful.
The Hawaiian shipping line had at least 1 or more ship like the one below.

King David Kalakau took the throne on February 12,1874 and already he felt the pressure of the office. There had been a number of problems. Even within the Parliament there were those that were pushing the country to become part of the US. Great Britain had exerted its power to block that from happening.
There were even those that were pushing for a "Great Hawaii Kingdom by annexing islands to the Kingdom. The King knew that something was in the wind and appointed his "friends" to post in the Government. It was a good thing that he had them for within less than 4 years the entire would would turn upside down. He continued to do all that he could to encourage the development of Hawaii into a Kingdom that would be able to export more than it imported. Do to the Healthcare reforms and immigration the population of the islands was ever increasing. The native (enthnic Polynesian) population had grown to 212,000 and Immigration over the decades had added at least another 228,000.
The Island had a foundry, shipyards etc. But it still had a problem in not having ores and coal. The country had tried a variety of sources to provide power, Dams and wind mills.
The Military had enough small arms to arm a sizeable force and there were a lot of artillery pieces of varios sizes and types. Only recently had the country aquired the ability to make its own gunpowder. It had two gunsmiths that wer capable of repairing and making some small arms but even so to do that required the importation of metal or the new steel.
Hawaii had traded with Australia , New Zealand, China and Japan as well as the US and Canada (and Great Britain). It had recently purchased some 6,000 Martini Henry Rifle used by the British Army.

While everything seemed to be going well in the Kingdom there were problems just as in any other country. In 1870 there had been a new Constitution submitted and ratified. While an improvement over the two previous constitutions it had left some in the Missionary Party still attempting to push the country toward joining the US. What they failed to realize was their wishes had been blocked by the Queen -Empress of Great Britain. The British had no desire to see the US pick up the islands.
The Royal Hawaiian Constabulary was being kept busy these days with not just visiting sailors off of the Merchant and Whaling ships but from crime that seemed to be growing as a result of Immigration from the Far East.
Still despite everything these were the good days and who would have thought that in just 4 years everything would change.

The Shipyard in Honolulu had begun construction on a new ship the King Kamehameha. It was the fifth ship that the yard would be constructing. With each ship they seemed to have learned to do better.

The Hawaiian government was purchasing some naval guns for its warships from the British manufactures. It also purchased some more rifles and Munitions but this would be probably the last arms purchase from Great Britain. The Hawaiians were buying a lot of surplus artillery pieces from the United States , which still was trying to get rid of a lot of old guns left over from the Civil War.

A Young Royal Hawaiian Naval officer by the name of John Masters was there overseeing the construction. John had been a graduate of the Naval school and he had also been spending time at sea.
The shipyard would most likely be in Honolulu proper since that is where the consentration of population and industry are. Honolulu Iron Works had its major foundry right now downtown for years. The problem with the use of the Pearl River Harbor, much like Honolulu, is that the mouth of either harbor needs to be dredged in order to make harbors accessible even during low tides. The mouths of Honolulu Harbor and Pearl Harbor were not dredged until the 1900s.
If this is Post-Fall you should have the Hawaiian government adopt a policy of annexation of guano islands, much like the US. If they can get down to Nauru at least they will have a major industry that will reap money even from Europe.

Supreme Court Justice William Little Lee had nearly died in 1857 but the doctors had managed to save his life but he had never totally recovered. He had asked the King to relieve him of the post and had been replaced by ELis Hunt Allen. Justice Lee had then retired to his residence on a Sugar Plantation that he owned with his wife. The Justice was a strong support of the Monarchy .

Hawaii's population was continuing to grow. Immigration was causing a surge in the population as people from various European countries and the far east came to the islands for a new life. Unfortunately not all of the Immigrants had the best interest of the Islands or its people in mind. The Royal Hawaiian Constabulary or Police force was being kept busy combating the arrival of the Tong. It took a valiant effort by many police officers and cooperation from the civilian population before the Tong grip was weaken. For a period of time it was almost like a small war fought in the backrooms. An attempt to steal weapons from a military depot resulted in a massive manhunt that saw a violent shootout between the police and the Gang..
Things then went back to normal with the Parliament arguing over the expenditure of so much money on the military and the police.

Hawaii was now in 1875 midway toward the next census count. Population growth had given the islands a lot more chance to grow. There were now several banks on the islands and the export of Sugar Cane and fruits and woods was providing the island with a lot of cash. The Prime Minister was still pushing for annexing other islands. He had also exchanged letters with the Governor General of New Zealand regarding some trade problem matters.
There was still a movement within the Parliament to have the US Annex Hawaii but the Prime Minister was not one of those. Indeed he was a member of the Nationalist Party and a supporter of the Monarchy and an Independent Hawaii. He did have some suspicions that Mr Standford B Dole was not as loyal to the Monarchy as he was. He had reports of comments by him in private that the man wanted Hawaii to eventually join the US but he also noted that he was loyal to the people of Hawaii.
The arrival of two large artillery pieces marked the end of the arms purchases. These guns would deter any attack on the Capital.

Hawaii's foundry had been importing scrap Iron as well as Iron ore. It had be asked if it could supply the platting to build an Ironclad. The owner was not sure if it would be possible but it would take a lot moe iron ore than what he had on hand. It was doubtful that the Hawaiian Parliament would approve the money for such an undertaking as they felt that with the Royal Navy and the United States Navy to protect them there was no need really for an Hawaiian Navy.
The ship that they were thinking of building would be similar to the picture below. The Navy's officers were of mixed minds on the subject. They would love to have steam powered warships but an Ironclad. That was another question. It would need to be ocean going and that would present a problem getting into the Harbor.
David S Poepoe
April 24th, 2012, 06:28 PM
The Hawaiians should just purchase their warships from Britain, particularly since the British frequently arranged loans to help sell warships. Building a warship is an immensely complex proceedure and I don't think the Islands have the capability to completely outfit large warships. Besides the picture you have is that of a shallow draft Eads ironclad that won't be of much good.
chris N
April 24th, 2012, 07:07 PM
I did think that it would be too shallow drafted for the Pacific. Actually what I really had in mind was an improved version of this ship(see below).

Perhaps the British might have built a ship for Hawaii like the Confederate Raider CSS Alabama,
David S Poepoe
April 24th, 2012, 07:45 PM
Any warship the Hawaiians would use would be sail and steam powered. Steam engines are not reliable for the time period, they are at most still single or dual expansion engines and consume a lot of coal. For the 1870s or so the British are selling off dozens of their smaller gunboats, which would do fine just for steaming around the island chain. Anything like an improved 'Virginia' would just be a waste of money and a hazard to operate in high seas, consider what happened to the former-CSS/USS Atlanta.
chris N

Okay I am not wedded to the idea of an Ironclad and can see that perhaps an improve Alabama type ship might be something that would give the Hawaiians greater range and flexibility. I could not see it having more than two of these ships and the rest would be smaller.

The Royal Navy built two classes of wooden gunvessels between 1859-1867, the Philomel and the Cormorant. Many of the ships apparently were sold off within ten years. They ranged between 570-877 tons and had crews ranging from 60-90 men. Smaller than the Alabama, and bearing five guns they would probably work fine as a means of 'cutting their teeth'.

Hawaii's Prime Minister made clear to the King that he would dispatch the Navy to make claims on a number of Islands. The First Island to receive a visit was the Midway Islands. The Last visited place was an Island called Wake. The Island was interesting but once again the wisdom of the Prime Minister was called into question. To which the Captain of the ship jokes -You're is not to reason why just do your job and not question Why!
With this visit the very tired team of Engineers returned home to Honolulu. They then began to work on their report and after several revisions. and three months of work it was completed and ready for the Prime Minsters review.
The report did not make any recommendations but it did point out some pluses and minuses and gave some estimates as to cost.

With the day of the fall approaching no one on the planet except for some astronomers were aware of any potential problem. The Hawaiian Government had decided that it would build a facility at Midway. The Island had several ship wrecks and they might be salvaged. There were also some Guano deposits on Midway and Wake which might be of some considerable worth.
Johnson Atoll would be claimed by Hawaii but no facility would be moved or built on it. Howland and Baker would also be claimed but again nothing other than visits to the island would be done. On Wake a minor facility would be established to allow the export of what Guano deposits there were and as a possible small naval outpost/coaling station.

1875 Hawaii's Foreign Minister became aware of the fact that his country had now become involved in a region of the world where the powers of Europe were becoming involved. Germany, which had come into existence only 4 years ago was beginning to express an interest in establishing a colonial Empire. The Germans had not yet established a position but it was clear that they would . Also the Hawaiian company was with the Nauru Island deal getting very close to Her Majesty's the Queen empress's territory. Hawaii did not need a possible conflict with the largest power in the World.
The result was a very loud argument in Parliament and a demand that the Prime Minister Resign. The King however refused that demand but did call upon a less ambitious plan.
the agreement was not revoke but the possibility of war sent shock waves through the islands and a run on the banks.
Things calmed down when an agreement was reached between her Majesty's government and the government of Hawaii over the island.

Thing calmed down in the Hawaiian capital. Stanford B Dole was about to run for Parliament as a candidate of the Missionary Party. While he was considered a friend of the King many of the Monarchy's supporters were not at all sure about Mr Dole. He seemed to favor annexation by the US.
The Fall would change a lot of views as the realization that to survive one must join together for the common good.

The exporting of the Guano phosphates from Nauru saw a flow of money into the treasury of the Hawaiian Government, A trust account set up to benefit the islanders and the company that did the business. There were exports of some of the product to Hawaii for the production of explosives for the Hawaiian Military but most went to Europe and to Australia. For the Australian government the money helped to pay of bills for the purchase of military equipment and other items.
The government of Hawaii hoped to construct a small railroad on the island from the capital of Honolulu

The Hawaiian government had dispatched a small force of troops to protect the island that promised to bring great wealth to both countries.. The tiny force was landed consisting of a Captain 2 Lieutenants,5 sergeants 6 corporals and 66 privates of Infantry and a Lt of artillery plus 19 gunners.
2 coastal defense guns arrived from Australia. The Hawaiians began to recruit and train Nauru islanders as soldiers and artillery men. Again weapons arrived from the British. More than 100 Naurian islanders joined the Military.
The SS Hawaiian Chietain arrived with goods from Hawaii and then proceeded to New Zealand with cargo from the Island in Barrels.

There were demands in Parliament from some of the Missionary Party for another Constitutional revision. Many in that party wanted to restrict the kings powers and to stop Hawaii getting involved in these foreign adventures.. The Prim Minister was denounced but it would seem that with the massive flow of money into the treasury most people were not concern. This was especially true because Great Britain was happy that no other power had claimed the Islands, like the emerging German Empire of the Japanese. Hawaii was regarded as a minor player that could be influenced by Britain.

Hawaii was attempting to find areas in which it could find the resources that it needed. It discovered that in Central America some of the resources could be gained. The region had Copper, Iron Zinc antimony Salt and Lead. It also had Gold Silver and Limestone. The Hawaiians were able to supply the new Republic with explosives as well as refine woods and furniture. It also provided food products. It was this relationship which was to prove handy. For both countries had items that the other needed.
The emerging Central American Republic was caught between two powers that would be growing after the Fall Mexico and Columbia and in the new world there would be few friends to help thwart the threat.

A Report showed to the Hawaiian Prime Minister the location of Coal deposits in the US. Most of the coal bought from the US had to come from the interior. Hawaii had also purchased coal from Australia and Canada but what would happen in an emergency?
The Hawaiian Navy had built up a 9 month reserve of Coal and a decision had been made to set up facilities on Midway to store more.

I don't think there is any really 'secret map' of coal deposits in the US it is all pretty well known, at least in the 1860s where the largest deposits are. You really should edit a few of your posts since in one it looked like you were suggesting the Hawaiians build a railroad from Nauru to Honolulu.
Its is likely that a Hawaiian government would move to establish contact with the last sovereign Polynesian nations, like Samoa, Fiji, Tuvalu, etc. Contact with Tahiti would be important because of the historical pre-Contact voyages that connected Hawaii with Tahiti. One can also consider the Maori as people to contact.
Nauru has a small population that would have to be taken into account.
Sorry I haven't been a bit more regular in suggestions, but I'm, funny thing enough, here in Honolulu right now.

The Hawaiian Government had also been attempting to establish contact with its fellow Polynesians. The Large Cruiser His Hawaiian Majesty's Ship King Kamehameha I paid a visit to Samoa and Fuji in an attempt to establish better relations with its fellow Polynesians.
The Small Garrison on Nauru had managed to recruit some islanders to argument its force but that would be it as there was not a large population to draw from. Trade and better relations were what the Hawaiian government had in mind, especially it's Prime Minister. The Missionary Party on the other hand wanted to stay out of it fearing that it would draw Hawaii into the big powers struggle and endanger their main goal annexation by the US.
Little did they realize that that goal would be gone in just a short period of time by an "Act of God". What relations Hawaii formed would strengthen her for the coming struggle. . The Hawaiian were able to acquire the sister ship of the CSS Stonewall for a mare pittance . The ship would need some work but nothing major. Japan had already purchased the Stonewall and was copying it for its Navy.

The Royal Hawaiian Navy received the last of the arms that it would get. Arriving were some replacement guns for the navy, 500 Martin Henry Rifles for the Naval Landing Parties and the small Hawaiian Marine Corp. The government also received several more coastal defense guns and some additional small arms.
Rails arrived from the United states as well as a locomotive, tender and some rail cars for the construction of the Oahu rail Line.

Time was slowly drawing to a close to the end of the pre- Fall period of the History of the Kingdom Of Hawaii. The Kingdom now had a lot of contact with other Polynesian people. Due to inprovement in Health the Polynesian population of the islands was far larger than in OTL. Still the Islands had many of the same problems . It had no domestic production of coal because there was none on the island. It had used its natural resouces to as much advantage as possible. It had harness the power of the wind with windmills and had also adopted the production of power by dams. Because its climitate there was generally a low demand for the burning of coal or wood for heat.
The Prime Minister had had the stockpiling of coal for at least a 9 month period so as to assure that the nations navy and other government facilities would have it.
The government had a limited ability to produce arms and munitions as it had generally imported that from Britain or the US. There were sevearal gunsmiths on the islands and the Government had acquired the capacity to produce bullets for its small arms. As for Munitions for its cannons it was unknown. The ships all had their Munitions lockers full and there was enough stockpiled to fight a small war but could it produce more on its own was a question that the Secretay of War/Navy was trying to find out.

You certainly like saddling the Hawaiians with some of the worst warships of the time period. Any ship of the Royal Navy would just prefixed by HMS, not His Hawaiian Majesty's Ship.

Since the ships that I mentioned by name are now in the Hawaiian Navy the correct form is His Hawaiian Majesty's Ship. I went with the Alabama type of cruiser because it was something that would have a longer range and could be bought fairly cheaply. The French built Stonewall class Ironclad may have been a big mistake on my part as it is a white elephant.
Still it might be of some use.
The four gunboats were I thought a good fit for the Hawaiian Navy's needs and if you recall it was you who gave me the idea. I admit that I am not totally happy with the Hawaiian Navy but it getting too close to THE Fall to have new ships arrive. Still I might do a revision. So any further ideas?

The Hawaiian Government in one of its last moves approved the purchase of two additional gunboats from Britain. These would give the Navy a total of 2 Cruisers(frigates) and 6 gunboats. With coal being an item that one would have to import the Hawaiian navy was depending upon vessels which could also use sail in order to stretch out its supply.
The Hawaiian Navy could use wood in its engines but it was felt that this was not desirable as it increased the danger of fire much more so than coal.
The Royal Hawaiian Military finally established a base on Midway Island and began the job of salvaging the ships that had been wrecked there. The facilites to be built included storage facilities for Water and coal and the building of some kind of barracks as well as some fortification. Needless to say the debate on the spending on the project lead to a massive argument between the two major Political Parties. Mister Standford B Dole attacked the plan as a giant waste of the Kingdoms resources while Prime Minister Walter M Gibson in his address called Mr Dole short sighted and completely failing to understand that the project was needed as part of the defense of Not only Hawaii but to protect the routes to Nauru, which was now providing Hawaii with revenue.
Mister Samuel Mills Dawson the Minister of Trade pointed out that the Project would not cost the taxpayers anything. He also pointed out that in view of the fact that Hawaii had to import all of its coal and metals it was necessary that trade be protected.
In another Bill the Military received funds to purchase 39 Gatling guns from the Colt firearms Company for the Hawaiian Military.

I was just referring to the purchase of the Stonewall.
The prefix of HMS is correct in the same manner as the Germans typically used SMS, His Majesty's Ship (in German) and the Dutch and Netherlands used the same arrangement. The British don't refer to their ships as His Britannic Majesty's Ship or His British Majesty's Ship. The Hawaiian Government, or any other government for that matter, would not use the redundancy of 'His Hawaiian Majesty's Ship' since who else's ships are they owning? The historical Hawaiian warship Kamiloa was simply called HMS Kamiloa.
Also the Royal (Hawaiian) Navy wouldn't use wood to fire its engines. Very few steamships do and wood isn't available, especially on islands, in the quantity needed. Coal burns better and, as historically shown by the British navy, would just be conserved as much as possible since it was expensive. There would just be a greater use of sail with the steam engines fired up on rare circumstances.
At the most I could see a purely steam driven harbor defense ship, like a coastal defense monitor, at Honolulu that frequently sails between just the Hawaiian islands and no further. Consider the gunboat HMVS Victoria or was it Protector, in the Victorian Navy down in Australia.

The Royal Navy delivered the two additional Gunboats to Gibraltar and from there a Mixed Hawaiian British Crew sailed them through the Med and the Suez Canal. the voyage gave the Hawaiian a chance to learn how to operate the Vessel. They were joined by a large ship of the Royal Navy.
The HMS Minotaur really impressed the Hawaiian as many had never seen a warship so large.

David I would appreciate any suggestions for names for the six x British Gunboats currently serving in the Hawaiian Navy. I think that I will have the Stonewall class ironclad sold by the Hawaiians to the Australians for Scrap. I think that the suggestion of a Monitor be be retained close at home for Coastal defense is a good one. Suggestions?
Perhaps two of these vessels might have been built by Great Britain and sold to Hawaii for the close defense of the Home Islands.

The Arrival of the two Monitors from the British Shipyard completed the purchase of Naval ships. That purchase combined with purchase of other arms and the investment into a rail line on Oahu and another on the Big Island had left the treasury in a low state. The Kingdom had been spending money so fast that the reserves were only slowly growing.
Stanford B Dole seemed to be one of the leaders of the Group calling for a weaking of the Monarchy and strengthening of the Parliament. He also seemed to move in the direction of limiting who would be able to vote in elections.
This might have been possible if conditions had been similar to out time line but with a fairly large Polynesian Population that was bound to create a backlash.
One of the new Hawaiian Military cadets was angry over the attempt to weaken the Monarchy. Robert Wilcox , sometimes referred to as the Iron Duke of Hawaii, had chosen a military career and had been sent by the King to Italy to receive Engieering training. In late 1875 he received notice that he was to cut his training short and return home. The King had been having some feelings that something was going to happen and wanted to be ready.
Hawaii thus made its last purchase of coal, Iron, Lead and other materials. The purchase would arrive in time and it would be the last one to arrive before the Fall.
chris N
May 4th, 2012, 04:13 PM
1876 Cadet Wilcox had requested permission to remain in Italy to complete his last course and he was informed that he must return home no latter than July of 1877.
Construction was beginning on several projects on the Islands.
The Minister of trade reported that it appeared that the country would have a slight surplus in the next fiscal year thanks to the continued sale of Guano.
The Minister of Military/Naval Affairs reported that there were now enough stockpiling of coal for the Navy to last them for a Year without any further purchases.
The King had out of his own pocket given a grant to build a facility to observe the Stars. This was part of his grant for educational improvements. He had called for improvement to the new University of Hawaii.

As 1876 progressed some observers in Hawaii were looking at all of the changes that the country had gone through. The country now had one of the best medical care systems in not only the Pacific . As a result of that the death rate among the native Polynesian population had dropped massively. Hawaii had established an educational system that was insuring that its people could all read and write. The Great King Kamehameha III had set the wheels in motion by the establishment of first two major hospitals and then a one specializing in care for children. He had also had the government provide funds for the establishment of a college, which had latter become the University of Hawaii. It had a school of medicine, engineering, teaching and added on much over the years.
The nation had seen the beginnings of an industry that hopefully would add to the economy. The threat to its independence in the past had finally caused it to build its own military. While some wanted to hitch Hawaii to the rising power to Hawaii's east ( the US) it appeared that Great Britain did not want that to happen. Relations with the British had grown quite warm. Hawaii had purchased a lot of its ships from the British and the British were only too happy to see the Hawaiians take territory which might have otherwise gone to another power.
The American Civil War had shown the Hawaiians that while Hawaii should maintain strong relations with both the US and Great Britain it must count on itself first.
Still Hawaii was too dependent upon key goods being imported. But it was left with little choice in the manner as Hawaii lacked key elements.
Electric power was in its infancy but Hawaii did have a capacity to produce it in the future using wind and water.
As it need the life Changing point of THE FALL it appeared that the Nationalist Party had managed to out maneuver the Missionary Party for direction of the Country. Prime Minister Walter M Gibson had proven to be a capable leader for the Time and he will prove to be the man to steer the country in the crisis.
Will the Members of the Parliament put the interest of the Nation ahead of their own interest. King David had shown that he was willing to support growth but was he a monarch that would stand up to the coming crisis or would he fail and be replace by a relative as the Ruler of Hawaii.
Population wise Hawaii is in good shape to meet the crisis. It had enough resources to allow it to become something larger. Yet the coming world will be one that is full of much risk and threats. These threat may see the return of piracy and threat from powers that will be formed. It ill also see a danger from within from those who seek personal power and riches at the expense of all else.
It is now 1877 and the time is approaching when all will change.
Hawaii's destiny will be in the hands of people whose choices may result in life or death.

David s, I have been away from the computer, but when you memtioned harbour defence ships, I do not know about Victoria, but the Vics certainly had a HMCS (Her Majesty's Colonial Ship) Cerberus and South Australia had HMCS Protector. (Our whole navy.)
At this time, between the grain and copper trade and being the entry/exit for everything from inland NSW and Victoria, Pt Adelaide was pretty busy. (Apparently it even had more traffic than Sydney).
As an aside, when a ship from the MN visited Adelaide and chatted with a South Aussie naval officer, his response to being told that there was only one vesel was, "Good. Then there is no chance of a collision!"

1877 With the final ships scheduled to arrive from the British the Royal Hawaiian Navy was complete. More coal had been ordered from several sources for the Military and it appeared that the Hawaiian Shipping lines had also ordered more as there had been a growth in trade. The Hawaiian Shipping lines had ordered another Merchant ship from Britain and 1 from the US. There was even talk of having a ship built in Australia .
The British government offered Hawaii 2 additional Gunboats at Bargain prices and the Minister for Military and Naval Affairs recommend that the Purchase be approved. As expected it created another storm in the Parliament between the Royalist/Nationalist and the Missionary Parties..
There were some physical blows between members requiring the Police officers stationed at the chamber to intervene.. The motion passed 28 to 12. But two members latter had to be taken to the Hospital . It was the first act of violence in the Chamber. It was believed that the purcahse of the ships and the expansion of the Hawaiian Military was a clear signal that annexation was never to happen. What the members on the Missionary Party side failed to realize was that Great Britain had twice blocked US annexation of the islands and soon an event would take place which would block it for decades.

You could name these monitors after some of the traditional Hawaiian melee weapons, used by the warrior class prior to the introduction of firearms:
Hawaiian warriors employed a wide variety of weapons, often carrying several into battle for different purposes. Typical weapons include the Ihe (short spear), Pololu (long spear/javelin), Pahoa (wooden dagger), Pahoa 'Oilua (double bladed weapon), Lei-o-mano (shark-tooth weapon), La-au-palau (long war club), Newa (short war club), Pohaku (stone hand club), Pikoi 'Ikoi (tripping weapon), Ma'a (sling), Ka'ane (strangulation cord), and Ko'oko'o (cane).

1877 The country was in an Uproar as the Missionary Party got upset over the naming of the warships using Hawaiian Names. The Prime Minister saw no need to get upset about this but he was not going to give in to the Missionary Party. The Royalist or Nationalist Party had had enough of being push around. With a new Census to be taken place in just two Years there was a possibility that the Polynesian Population might once again become the majority of the population.
Estimates where that the Polynesian population would be perhaps 2 to 5,000 more than than the Immigrant population.
The Prime Minister was not totally opposed to becoming part of the US but it would be on Hawaii's terms and if they were not acceptable then he would do everything he could to ensure that the Kingdom remained independent.
He knew that Great Britain wanted the nation to remain independent and if anything a British Ally.

Honolulu July 1877 As the Passenger ship pulled into the Harbor it docked and begun to disembark it new immigrants to the islands. Among them was a man in his 40's. He had the bearings of a man who at one time be at sea but who had been through much hardship. He approached the Customs station and noticed that there was a naval officer nearby. The clerk asked him for his passport and he pulled out one baring the seal of the United States of America.
The Clerk looked at it and it said John A Payne and it Indicated that he was from the American South. He then asked the man if he was here for business or a visit. With an Accent that was clearly from Virginia he said a little of both.
The Navy officer hear the exchange and quickly moved toward the Man.
He said Would you happen to have formerly been Lt Payne of the Late Confederate States Navy?
To which he replied with a sigh Yes. And the officer said in reply, I am Lt John Masters of the Royal Hawaiian Navy and I have be instructed to collect you and you belongings. He then blew a whistle and two sailors came on the double.

And so Mr Payne was brought to a carriage and helped aboard by an Hawaiian Salor. Lt Master saw that Mr Payne's Luggage was in place and gabe the order to take them to The Military Affairs office . Mr Payne had never been in the islands before remarked that it was quite warm here but did not appear to be as Humid as South Carolina, where he had been stationed for a time. Mr Payne hoticed that the uniform thet the Lt was wearing was similar to that of the US Navy with the exception of the Shield on his cap.
They chatted for a while and Mr Payne was surprised to learn that Mr Masters had severed in the Merchant Marine before entering the Naval Academy.
The Journey lasted about half an Hour. Lt Masters then exited the coach with Mr Payne and gave orders for the luggage to be taken to the Hawaiian Arms Hotel and to be back at the Ministry in 2 Hours. With that they walked to the entrance where they were greeted by a Marine Sentry , who allowed they to enter.
They them arrived at the Office of the Minister of Military Affairs /Naval office and were shown a seat. Lt Masters was called in First and returned in Five minutes to escort Mr Payne.
The Minister rose and greeted his guest. He said, "Mr Payne I trust you had an enjoyable trip."
To which he replied it was a rather long one. I did get to see a lot of the Country before embarking on the ships that carried me here. I was surprised to receive your offer and I was most grateful to accept.
The Minister: Good I trust that you were able to bring the papers that we requested.

Good, don't go off the deep end - so to speak. So far your ATL has been fairly realistic, but building anything like the Hunley would make it drift into 'steampunk' and Hawaii doesn't need anything like it. Discussion: It is not my intention to have Hawaii build a submarine but just to gain knowledge. The person that I did use really did command the Huntley briefly but left after a mishap to rejoin the regular confederate Navy. As to what happen to him that is a big unknown. I suspect that like a great many Confederate officers he found it hard to make a living. As for who might have known of what happen with the Huntley. I suspect that word might have made its way to Hawaii over the Years..
This ex-Confederate Naval officer got an employment offer because of two factors his having served aboard the first true submarine but mainly to gainhis experience in training officers of the Royal Hawaiian Navy.
On the other Hand if the Confederacy could build a submarine then it is possible that the Hawaiian could also but I think that that would happen in the future(and I do not mean the immediate future but perhaps 10-20 years).
Anyway The Royal Hawaiian Navy now has all of the ships that it will have by the time of The Fall.

At the Conclusion of their Talks the newly Commission Lt Payne was escorted over to the Navy's Uniform shop were he was measured for his uniform. He would be taking up duties as an instructor at the Naval school but would also continue to work on putting to paper everything that he knew about the CSS Huntley. The Minister had no plans to ask the Parliament for fundss for any attempt at constructing one but who knew
what might be possible in the future.
The Minister knew that he had some very bright officers but for now it was the surface Navy that concern him.
The two new Monitors would ensure the safety of the defenses of the Home islands. They were powerful warships but he was growing quite weary over demonstrations by some of the Missionary Party over their Hawaiian names. He had to admit that the move had been controversial but quite popular with the Native Hawaiian population.
He was still concern that the Navy needed a larger stockpile of coal.
The Nation's foundry had received a stockpile of ore to allow it to build metal products. He had attended a diner with the owner and he went on about a new process which would allow he to manufacture something called Steel. It was a process that had been acquired from the Americans. Still he doubted that the foundry would be able to produce much of it as it would still require the importation of ores from outside Hawaii. He was However producing a limited amount of Rails for the Railroad being constructed in the Islands.

Late 1877 Hawaii holds Parliamentary elections which result in the Nationalist winning 32 of the seats to the Missionary Party's 18.
The Prime Minister announces some projects which he hope will see a diversification of the economy. Renewed efforts to grow Oak and Pine trees will be attempted as well as a limited attempt to grow cotton.
The Nation is preparing for the Census of 1880, which will see how big the nation has become. Hawaii has constructed its first Prison.

Earlier in the year an American Naval vessel the USS Narraganset stopped in Honolulu after a cruise along the Pacific coast of the US from California to Alaska. The Captain decided to visit the Kingdom of Hawaii on his way back from Alaska. it would be the final cruise of the ship. The Captain was then to return back to the East for a new posting.
He delivered two lectures at the Naval Academy on action during the Civil War. He also answered a few questions about sailing in Northern Waters.
He was overjoyed by the new friends that he had made. The Captain was George Dewey.

As the year drew to a close Hawaii seemed to be on track toward prosperity . Some good decisions had helped to increase revenue to the treasury. The result of this had been that some projects which would have taken place much latter in OTL were moved forward. The Small Hawaiian Railroad lines were a great step forward for the Kingdom but on the Mainland they would be considered tiny. Technology was moving forward.
Hawaii was learning a great deal from advancements in Medical Science. King Davids predecessors had spent a lot of time and effort to insure that the Kingdoms medical schools were aware of the latest theories. Thus they were better prepared than a lot of others.
Winter came to the Kingdom and that generally meant rains and perhaps a little cooler. Still no one had any idea that the New year would bring something which would change the course of life on the planet.

1878 Prime Minister Walter M Gibson returned to his office on January 2, to catch up on some paperwork. On His desk was a document stating that the Locomotive had been delayed but should be shipped to the island in late January. This was the second delay. The Ministry of Military/Naval Affairs reported that the Armory had acquired the ability to produce ammunition for the Martin Henry Rifles. The Gatling guns had arrived from the US and were being checked out.
Work on several power projects were nearing completion. The Public Health authorities had dealt with a water contamination problem due to run off from a sugar processing plant.
The planting of some Oak trees seemed to be doing well. There had survived so far but experts would not know until some time in the future. The same held true of some pine trees. There the experts, with that the Prime Minister laughed and said aloud- Why do all these people keep referring to themselves as experts and then not want to give a definite answer to my questions- Enough.
With that the Prime Minister looked for the report from the Attorney General but could not find it. He then got up and went to the door and said to his Secretary- Louisa, did the report from the Attorney General come or is he late again?
With that Louisa gave him a look and sighed saying that the Attorney General was away on Vacation and had sent a note before leaving that the report would be late. The Police Commissioner would however, be in his office latter that morning to give him an update.
The Prime Minister thanked her and told her to let him know when the Commissioner arrives.

The Observatory Had been completed in Hawaii and the Telescope was in place. Viewing from Hawaii was very good as the Islands lacked the problems of the more industrial work still it was rather a new thing for the Islands and the team of Astronomers was not exactly the best or most well known. Still by the beginning of February they noticed something in the distant sky. At first the so called Scientist were convinced that it was a defect in the telescope so they sent for an expert to come and look at it. That took time and it was nearly April before the person said that the telescope was in perfect order. By that time the object was getting closer but what was it. There was no telegraph connection to the US from Hawaii.
The Hawaiian Government had managed to have laid telegraph lines between the Islands and there was a proposal to lay a line to Midway. But word of the going on in the world continued to be by ships that would deliever news that could be months old. Even a trip between California and Hawaii would take some time.

From the Observatory there was some discussion as to what they were seeing. They had an idea that it might mean something but what exactly they were not sure of. They would keep track of it but until they were sure there was no use setting off alarms.
In the meantime Captain William P'ao of the Royal Hawaiian Army had just returned from a 3 month Visit to the United States. There he had had a chance to Met Colonel Hazen, who had been a General during the Civil War and one of General Grants friends. They had spoken much about the War.

The Cabinet was meeting and the Prime Minister discussed what would be the legislative agenda for the next session of parliament. The government had been making a lot of progress and he was hoping that the plans to purchase railcars from the US might be completed. The country was still receiving immigrants. Everything appeared to be normal. He wondered if the nation had wasted money on that telescope.
He did read a report that the Minister of Military/Naval Affairs had forwarded to him concerning Captain William P'ao's visit to the US and his meeting with Colonel Hazen.

Hawaii had not suffered at all that much but it had little idea as to what was happening in the rest of the world. Almost all information would have to come to it by sea and that could mean months might pass.
The First hints at what had happen came from a whaling ship that came back from the North. despite having been in the warmer climates it had Ice aboard it. Its captain reported that the weather had been great one moment and then it had been a mess. He had immediately headed south. He would be staying in Honolulu until his ship was ready for sea again.
The Next ship that stopped at Honolulu was a ship from Canada. It had a lot more news as the connections with the Canadian Capital was still working. The Devastation to the East Coast was something to horrible to believe. A lot of the East Coast and its population had been wiped out.
The American Capital was gone.

I think you are moving a little too fast and should probably reread the spots in Peshwar Lancers regarding The Fall since it appears, from what I can recall, that the Hawaiians are a little too cognisant of what is going to happen. Also I doubt there would be any 'shaking' in Honolulu from any impact on the other side of the globe.
Shipping with California probably wouldn't be really disrupted until the advent of winter. Actually, there may be an exodus from the West Coast to Hawaii, much as we saw with Britain to India and other portions of the Empire.

Hawaii had little indication that anything had happen. The people at the observatory were too inexperienced to know that what they had seen had been asteroids heading toward the Earth.
Ships arrived in Honolulu but everything remained normal. The First unusual event was the arrival of a Whaling ship that had been near Alaska and had been struck with Rain that appeared to be muddy. He returned to Honolulu before planning on returning to Norway.
Then the firsts ship arrived from Canada with news of the disaster.

A picture was only slowly being put together of what had happen in North America. The Hawaiian Kingdom had no idea that the Fall had impacted Europe.
Still A decision was reached asking Captain McLean to take his ship and pick up what passengers and cargo there might be in Vancouver .
It was critical that the government of Hawaii find out what was going on there.

Captain McLean's arrival in the Canadian Seaport was welcomed by the Canadian authorities. The Canadian government was attempting to evacuate a lot of its population from the east. Although things were not bad one could feel that it was slightly colder than was normal. The Captain was capable of taking both cargo and passengers and there were a number of Canadians that desired to take passage.
The Canadians agreed to sell the Iron and other ores but would like to see payment in food.
Hawaii could provide fruits and Potatoes. so arrangements were made. I would also be sending Sugar.
The Captain did get what detail had come across the telegraph line and information from refugees. He also happen to come across a US Army Engineer that had been in Alaska. Things were not bad but already dust clouds could be seen and the temperature was chilly for summer.
The officer was trying to make it back to the lower 48 states but nothing was heading that way. No trains were heading into the US and only 1 a week was making the trip back east in Canada.
The officer agreed to go to Hawaii and hopefully then make his way back to the US. One thing said the officer winter appeared to be coming early.
Already the weather keeper was reporting that the temperature seemed to be at least 8 degrees below normal and the telegraph had said that a snow fall had stopped traffic from the east.
Several ships were leaving for Australia carrying Canadians.

The Voyage to Hawaii was uneventful. The Captain had another Canadian ship with him carrying people and good. As they approached the Island the were greeted by on of the Hawaiian Warships that had just completed a run to Midway.
The Ship docked in Honolulu after a voyage to and from Canada that had lasted nearly a month ( including time spent in Canada).

So Far Hawaii had not noticed too much of a difference in maritime traffic to the country. But starting in November there seemed to be a lot more ships stopping at the port of Honolulu from both Canada and the US. Some of the Americans and Canadians had asked to be allowed to settle in Hawaii. Hawaii could take some of them but not everyone that came.
Food products were shipped to Canada. They mainly consisted of fruits, sugar and fish. In return Hawaii was receiving Copper and Iron Ore and coal. The amount of coal shipped was dropping each time as the weather in Canada was cooling .
Captain Mclean believed that the city would still be able to function but authorities were attempting to get all of the refugees out as quick as possible. There were some ships under construction but the cold weather was making things difficult. Even the flow of warm water from the south was not able to battle to changing weather that was bringing ice further south.

The Winter of 1878 was quite nasty in Canada. The food that arrived from Hawaii did help but once again the amount of coal that available for export dropped as more of it was needed to keep the people from Freezing. Gradually the train traffic from Eastern Canada came to a halt
as the heavy snow fall blocked the way.
One of the people that the Hawaiians began to deal with was a Mr Donovan who was involved in the Mining community. He wanted to get his people out.
As time passed and the new year began there was no improvements in the weather. The cold continued to hang on and the snow fall continued to creep southward. The only thing that helped prevent the bay from freezing over was the Warm current that flowed up the American coast.

Hawaii continued to attempt to maintain contact with Vancouver. But it was lucky if one ship could make it there and back once a month. Each trip brought in supplies for those that remained and took out goods that the islands could use. In addition 350 refugees were taken away each time.Despite the fact that the City had enough food and fuel to last it through the winter the population was desperate to escape the cold. The Police and the Army were attempting to maintain order.
Captain Mclean and his officers carried Pistols at all times and the captain had armed a number of sailors with rifles. Things were desperate.
In March of 1879 spring had come but while the calendar may have said spring the weather continued to feel more like December. Finally in June the weather had warmed enough to allow work to be done on the ships under construction and on mining. Ships from Hawaii and Australia arrived to attempt to carry out more of the population. The population continued to decline. It was hard to believe that the population had gone from 150,000 to 30,000. Nearly 6,000 had died from the cold. With luck it was hoped that by the end of August to have the population down to 5,000. From what little information was available things were bad. Contact with the east had been lost. The Hawaiians had had some contact with the Americans in California.
They had also sent an expedition in the spring up and down the coast. As they approached the most southern parts of Alaska there was nothing but snow and ice. The trip to the south down the Washington Coastline to Oregon was no better. Expeditions inland found little human contact as everyone with sense had fled south.. The Hawaiians did find abandon weapons and salvaged what they could,
The collapse of World order had seen the remergence of Piracy and when an Hawaiian Naval Vessel came into contact with them the result was quick Naval Justice.

Hawaiians continued to see a lot of ships visiting it on their way to Australia. The Royal Hawaiian Navy was being kept busy patrolling the Pacific waters. The Cruiser Hawaii made its first visit to American waters with a trip to the coast of Washington and Oregon. It was the first time that the ship had been in American waters since before the fall. There was still a few ships leaving Canadian Waters for the southern Pacific.
Some of the Crew had lived in America before emigrating to Hawaii and becoming citizens and all said that this was not normal. It did not snow in July in the Northern Hemisphere.
The ship could see that there was lots happening in Vancouver. Most of it was trying to finish off ships under construction as people wanted to move where it was warmer. Two ships were being completed for the Hawaiians as payment for food. The SS Tallahassee was in port dropping off food stuff and picking up cargo. It was hard to believe how well the old ship was doing.
The Hawaii was anxious to get out of the cold zone. So they left.
Upon heading back they came across a Norwegian Whaler. that seemed to be having problems.

Hawaii The Shock of the Fall had taken the wind out of the Missionary Party's sail. There was no way that the country was going to join the United States when the US was in deep trouble. For the rest of 1878 and the first part of 1879 the islands had remained in contact with California but then it appeared that things didn't seem to be right. The Governor of California appeared to some of the islands agents to be corrupt. Not only that but it appeared that a lot of the goods that Hawaii always ordered could not be provided. The Hawaiian Navy seemed to use Santa Catalina Island as a stop off point. The Island had been uninhabited since the end of the Civil War.

The Royal Hawaiian Navy was now quite busy protecting Hawaiian Territory and the shipping lanes to and from Hawaii. There appeared to be ho American or British Warships in the Eastern Pacific. And even in the Western Pacific it was rare in 1879 to run into any British warship. In fact it was more often that they came across a Australian or New Zealand Merchant ship. The Hawaiian gunboat Lanakila was patroling the waters around Naru . It happen upon an Nezealand Ship that was being attacked by a Pirate vessel. It immediately sailed into battle sending the Pirate ship to the bottom. The Vessel was escorted to Naru were it received repairs and medical care.
The islands garrison of 100 soldiers was to be reinforced as the island was considered to be very Important. It was decided by the Hawaiian government to triple the Garrison.
It was also decided that it might be a good idea to contact the Governor General of New Zealand and see about possible co-operation between Hawaiian and the British Empire.
Lt Commander Danny P'ao was to sail with the H (Hawaiian) Majesty's Ship P Malama and escort some ships from Canada to New Zealand. He would then deliver a letter from the Hawaiian Prime Minister to the Governor General Of New Zealand about co-operation.

The Prime Minister of Hawaii had also sent an envoy to the Central American Republic. Hawaii was interested in a trade agreement which would allow it to purchase resources that the region had that Hawaii could use. The Republic was caught between two neighbors , who were not considered friendly to the new republic.
Hawaii had some resources that the region could use like munitions. Hawaii had also started production of copies of the Martin Henry rifle and thus had about 2,000 older Enfield Rifles dating from the Civil War period that it could sell.
With a real need for weapons and munitions a deal was quicly reached..
Hawaii was also looking at the possibility of building new ships if it could acquire the resources. It was believed that the region might have the lumber needed to to the work. Hawaii would also produce some ships for the republic to lessen the naval threat.
As a result the Minister of Foreign Affairs from Hawaii was dispatched aboard the H (Hawaiian ) Majesty ship the Hakara Malks I to negioate an agreemwnt with the Central American Rebublic. He was given an escort by a five member detachment of marines. Talks went well and after just two days an agreement was hammered out that was benefical to both sides.
Hawaii was still finding that it had a coal problem. It was not bad at present due to stockpiling and the continuing delievery from Canada but in view of the fact that weather conditions were getting worse over time.

March 1880 Office of the Prime Minister Honolulu, Hawaii The Prime Minister was it seemed always reading reports. The event that was now being referred to as the Fall was really causing a lot of problems. Goods and materials that Hawaii could order from the United States or Great Britain were no longer available. The Hawaiian Government had attempted to gain other sources and to an extent they had been successful. The armory was able to produce copies of the Martin Henry rifle used by the military but at a very slow pace of 12-18 rifles a month. The people working there believed production could be stepped up to 30 shortly.
Anyway the Prime Minister had decided to create an office which would shift through all of the information that was piling up and produce a report that would make sense of it all. Every month the report would be presented to the Prime Minister and the those that the Prime Minister choice to add to the list. Hawaii's University had some excellent professors and learned Men and women but it was not that the islands were over running with experts. The reports would be stored in a location known only to the Prime Minister and two aides.
One thing the Missionary Party had finally shut up for that the Prime Minister was grateful. Soon it would be time to meet with His Majesty and brief him on everything. King Kalakau seemed to be measuring up to the job.

The most important point to make is that King Kalakaua never went by the name of 'King David' during his reign.
Also, I think you are moving a little quickly with your ATL. The many problem, I believe, is that you are not breaking things down into months. Things take time. Those monitors take years to build. Its highly unlikely that the impact would be known as 'the Fall' until years or decades later. The situation in the United States post-impact is only vaguely known, relying strictly on Sterling's references.

The actually facts about The Fall I agree will not be known for quite some time. what the Hawaiian government is tring to sort out is what has happen. At this point it is receiving second or third had information from people in Canada and the US. With the exception of the telegraph reports that the Canadians in Vancouver received from back east most is just rumors. Still the Royal Hawaiian Navy and merchant marine captains have stated that they have noticed unusual weather.
In addition the Hawaiian ships have noticed that the weather in Vancouver is much colder than is normal and snow being around in what should be summer is unusual.
As for Hawaii itself the islands weather remains normal with perhaps a few rainstorms..
I will attempt to slow things down.

The Minister of Military/Naval Affairs went on a tour of the two monitors. The Minister was really glad that the two vessels had been secretly ordered from Great Britain back in 1875 and had been delivered be fore whatever had happen had occurred. What exactly had happen wasn't clear to him. There was to be a meeting at which time the Prime Minister was expected to inform the cabinet as to what had been found out and what was false.
The Prime Minister had set up a Bureau to handle the matter for him.Called the Bureau of Accounting and Record Keeping. The Minister wondered if it was much more.
The Prime Minister had called upon the Royal Hawaiian Police to supply some personnel for an organization that would be charged with the protection of the Royal Family and other key member of government.
To many it would seem that he was patterning the organization after the American Secret Service.

As the year 1880 was progressing fewer and fewer people were remaining in Vancouver. The population had by the end of March 1880 declined to less than 5,000. Hawaii had taken possession of two ships that had been constructed in the shipyards there. Iron ore, coal and copper ore had continued to be taken out . It was estimated that by September almost all of the population would be gone. The snow could be seen not far from the Port. While the island was still clear weather changes were weird. Contact with the Canadian Midwest and east had gone silent. A surprise was when a train arrived. they had been slowly working their way to the west. Last word that they had had was that everyone in the east that wasn't dead was heading south.
Hawaii had now set up a Embassy in the Central American Republic. The Hawaiian's did not have that large a diplomatic staff so this was the first foray into setting up a formal diplomatic post. The primary purpose was trade but at the same time it was also to find out as much as possible about the changing world that hey were now living in. Information was very important in decision making. Hawaii knew all too little about what were the conditions in the US, Mexico, South America and the rest of the world.
For now British Interest and Hawaiian Interest were the same and as a result there was now an agreement between the Governor General of New Zealand and the Hawaiian government regarding trade and co-operation on protection from piracy. There was a problem in that Great Britain's Navy was unavailable to patrol the waters of the Pacific and now the much smaller Hawaiian Navy was seemingly doing that job and protecting British and Hawaiian lives.
New Zealand's Governor General in turn was informing the Governor General of Australia as both moved to protect her Majesty's interest.
Below the Governor General of Australia.
It must be noted that the Population of Canada was going to three places (that is that that was in Western Canada and which could reach the Port of Vancouver) Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. Hawaiian Warships would often provide what escort they could but the Navy only had 2 cruisers and 8 operational gunboats to patrol and provide protection as 2 more ships were always under going repairs.

One thing was being noticed that the number of ships that were stopping at Hawaii from North America seemed to be declining.
In late April of 1880 a Norwegian Whaler returned to Honolulu. It had returned to Norway or had attempted to. Weather was abnormal., The route that they Normally took to get home was blocked by ice requiring them to sail much closer to Scotland. There were snow squalls. Upon arriving in Norway they found that almost the entire population had moved to the south and many were seeking to leave. Here they received word of the European devastation. The British were seizing ships in an effort to remove the entire population. The Captain decided to take aboard all of the family members that he could and return to a place that he knew was both safe and which would welcome him- Hawaii He set sail and decided to take a risk and sail through the Channel. He was able to see some of the devastation caused by both the impact and the tidal waves. He sailed to America and what he saw made him weep. The America that he knew was no more. The First mate had to take over running the ship as the captain became ill and within days passed away. He stopped at the Falklands and was able to gain food and water. Next he went through the Straits and was into the Pacific.
The continued to Head toward Hawaii diverting to Easter Island for water. The ran into an Hawaiian Gunboat and were escorted the rest of the way there.
Upon arriving in Honolulu they were allowed to disembark and were checked by health authorities and Interviewed by by a Bureau that they had never heard of. All of the papers that they had had from Europe were taken.
They all carried the badges like below

The Agents that Interviewed the sailors and the people that were aboard the whaler were carefully sorting out known facts from speculation. They wanted to get a clearer picture of what hat happen in the rest of the world. While the accounts did present more information that the world which they had known had changed there was still a lack of information.
For facts here is what is know for sure a number of objects struck the earth creating massive loses of life. The series of impacts caused vibrations to be felt all over Europe. Russia and France suffered Impacts and there was a change in the weather. The winter which occurred after the impact seemed to be normal at first but snow fall continued into the spring of the following year. Norway's population moved to southern Norway and the same was true with Sweden. To the East the Baltic had much more ice.
Word had been passed that the British were using their Navy to help gather ships to evacuate the population from Great Britain as the weather never seemed to get back to normal. A Danish ship had been in Iceland and had been there when something had happen to the East Coast of North America. He had latter sailed to America and had been horrified at what he and his crew had see. There was no Boston nor was there an New York City. He had continued on into the Caribbean sea but the devastation there was bad. He then returned to Europe by Iceland doing what he could to evcaute those that he could carry. He returned to Denmark, first stopping at southern Norway.
The Press had reported this story, which was in an Oslo Paper.

As the bureau attempted to sort out the facts that could be proven from Rumors and speculation about the situation in Europe and the US thigs were moving along on other fronts.
The Government of Hawaii was setting up its first official diplomatic post in the Central American Republic. The Royal Hawaiian Constabulary arrested three people for being a part of a plot to kill the new Ambassador to the Republic of Central America. There was evidence that the three people were in the pay of a foreign power. This was increasingly looking like it was a dangerous world. His loyalty to the Monarchy and the Nation was without Question. Since the departure of Mr Green for his new post there was a matter that the King wanted to discuss with his Privy Council. It was whether the government of Hawaii should send a special Envoy to New Zealand to discuss matter of concern to both Hawaii and the British Empire.

If he accepted he was to report to the Prime Ministers office for a meeting . But if he turned down the mission he would then be returned to the base to await the return of the Western Gunboat.

Charles Bishop went over in his mind what his mission was. He recalled the meeting with the King and the letter that the three had drawn up to be given to the governor General. He also had a letter that was to be forwarded to Her Majesty the Queen Empress and one for the Governor General of Australia. Besides being a Special Envoy from the Government of Hawaii, Mr Bishop held the post of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and a Member of the House of Nobles.
His Bank in Hawaii had handled business deals between Hawaiian and New Zealand and Australian Interest. Thus he had contacts in both countries as well as Great Britain. If anyone could get an agreement it would be Mr Bishop. Hawaii's small Navy was now protecting not only its own interest but that of Great Britain. To continue to do that it would need to be assured of a steady supply of coal as well as help constructing new warships.

Honolulu : In a building in the suburbs of the city a group of government employees were busy working on a project set up by the Prime Minister. They were sorting out all of the information that had been gathered from interview of people and what newspapers had managed to make their way to Hawaii. They had also received reports from captains of Hawaiian Merchant ships that had visited ports in the Pacific. They also had reports from the Hawaiian Navy as well as drawings records and even a few photographs. What was emerging was a realistic look at changes that were taking place. From the Hawaiian Navy and ships that had gone to Vancouver came a picture that was frightening. It appeared that Winter had its grasp on Alaska and most of Canada and that the temperature was getting worse.
As for what were the conditions in the United States that was an unknown. They had little idea as to who was running the country. Contact with California had slowly been lost. But contact with the Central American republic had begun to paint a picture of Mexico as an Aggressive state determined to conqueror and rule its neighbors.
Ant to the South Columbia appeared to be just as aggressive. Which was why the Central American Republic was happy to trade ore for the 2,000 Enfield rifles that Hawaii had as surplus. More of these rifles had been found in a warehouse in Canada abandoned. They also would be sold to the Central American Republic. Hawaii needed the ores and the woods that the region could provide.
The group was also aware that the Narion's armory was able to produce copies of the Martin Henry rifle but only in small numbers. They had also taken apart a Gatling Machine gun and had been able to duplicate the parts after nearly 2 years of trial and error. They could make copies but each one took nearly 3 weeks. Progress was slow.
Then there was a classified Repord about Thor's Hammer. Even within this group only a handful of people were aware of it. If they realized the work and money that was being spent on the project they would be amazed. Thors Hammer was not really a weapon but a ship. It was an Norweigan build Whaler that had been altered and armed. Its crew was a mixture of Hawaiian ( some born in the US) and Norweigna) and it was destined to be the key to open relations with the United States.

Very few people were aware of the existence of The bureau that the Prime Minister had created. It was already doing a great deal to sort out truth from rumors but it was also turning into something that was much more. It was in fact becoming Hawaii's Intelligence service. At this point it had no fancy gadgets it just had a bunch of hardworking people determined to do their best for the country but it also was evolving as agents were added to protect key government individuals. Among the Envoy to the Central American Republic was at least one agent, whose mission also included finding out just what was going on .
The Envoy to New Zealand would not have been surprised if he found out that one of his bodyguards was in fact an Agent of the Hawaiian Secret Service.
The Mission of Thor's Hammer was about to take place. The King had a meeting with the officers of the crew and shook the hand of every one of them. The Prime Minister was with them and then went wit then to Ford Island where he addressed the entire crew and then personally shook the Hand of every crew man. He knew many personally. He knew well that theirs was a risky mission and he knew that they intended to sail in Harms way.

The Hawaiian Chieftain was making excellent time. It had so far been a safe voyage. The presence of an Hawaiian Gunboat had given everyone peace of mind. But now it was time for them to leave and for nearly three days there had been nothing but the two ships but then on the fourth day a speck was seen on the Horizon. As time went by it started to close the distance. The Canadian Ship captain was concern as he was well aware of the threat of pirates. So far things had not been bad since the Hawaiian Navy had started to patrol but one never knew.
They were still nearly a week from New Zealand and there were no Royal Navy or colonial warship around. But the ship was getting closer and it was clear that she was not a Hawaiian Gunboat . Then nearly two days after she had first appeared it was clear that the ship was not a Pirate or foreign warship it was instead the flagship of the Royal Hawaiian Navy.
It would escort the two ships to New Zealand and pass along some information that they thought that the Kiwis would appreciate Knowing.

IN Hawaii the government was conducting the Census and after 5 months the data indicated a sizable population growth due to both births and Immigration. Preliminary figures indicated a population of about 626,000.
Of that Immigrants from Asia (China 5,000 and Japan 3,000) accounted for 8,000, Canad accounted for more than 23,000. Thus for the first time the white population outnumbered the Polynesian/Asian Population 318,000 to 308000.
Currently the Parliament had 50 members in the lower house and the Nationalist Party(also Known as the Royalist) had 31 of the seats and the Missionary Party had 19. The Missionary Party was also attempting to change its name in a bid to win wider support. Still even if the Opposition were to gain all of the seats (unlikely) the Nationalist would still have a 2 seat majority.
While things seemed to be going so well for the Hawaiian government there had been some problems. An attempt was made to sabotage the Foundry. There had been some attempts to rob the country's bank and some counterfeiting. All were of concern to the Government and to the Royal Hawaiian Constabulary . The Hawaiian Secret Service was also getting involved in the Investigation.

Central American Republic: The Hawaiian Envoy to the Central American Republic arrived at one of the ports on the countries Pacific Coast. The Former Hawaiian Foreign Minster was not impressed by the Republic. It seemed that the country was suffering from a variety of problems. The country had only come back together due to the changing world conditions but there was too much chaos.
He was greeted at the port by not only officials of the Republic but by the Captain who had been busy working on trying to get the compound built. Several of his workers had disappeared and building materials had vanished but was of concern was that there had been two attempts to kidnap him and one to Kill hem. Now he had s detachment of soldiers keeping an eye on him. The captain was a crack shot and one of the people trying to kill him. Upon searching the man they found Mexican silver dollars on his person.. All of this did not make Envoy Green feel any better but the Captain assured him that the compound was nearly completed and he would be safe.
The Army was very Happy with the Rifles that the Hawaiians had sold them and the fact that another 5,000 would soon arrive increased their feeling of comradeship.

The Hawaiian Residence was in the growing city of Cholutea in the Provience of the same name in the State of Honduras. The city was not far from the sea and on the hoad connection to all of the country.
The Captain had chose a site which would be cool in the hot summer and more important easily defendible. He had used all of his knowledge to make it the most like Hawaii as possible. It was probably the most modern facility in the entire city. The captain had also made some suggestions regarding water that had helped to improve things. Captain Wilcox had started to train his workers in how to construct things.

Envoy Green was now being briefed by Captain Wilcox of what he had found out. The Central American Republic was feeling some pressure from its two neighbors. It would appear that the Mexicans were paying agents to eliminate anything that might strengthen the forces of the Central American Republic. Hawaii needed to import ores to be able to produce goods. If it was forced out then Hawaii would be weaker.
Envoy Green also was able to discover from his meeting with officials that there was still a British entity On the island of Jamaica. It would be a good idea if contact could be made with them. The British on that island had clashed with the Mexicans and were seeking goods that they could not get elsewhere.
He prepared a coded Message to be sent back to Hawaii asking for additional help and explaining what they had found out. Mexico and Columbia were not considered friendly.

Envoy Green's meeting with the Central American government did score points. Hawaii would be training some students from the Republic in Healthcare. The region could use more trained doctors and nurses.
He was also able to get a better trade agreement hammered out.
The Republic's military appreciated the arrival of the British made rifles that the Hawaiian had sold them. These weapons were well cared for but dated from the American Civil War period. Still the 8,000 rifles meant that the army had a lot more weapons to equip its army in a hostile world.
It was hoped that the Hawaiians would be able to salvage more out of the Canadian region before the really bad winter weather made travel to Canada Impossible or too dangerous until next spring or summer..
Green did get a chance to meet with someone from the British Colony on Jamaica . They knew a lot more about what was happening in North America. The British officer warned the Hawaiian that while things were getting better in the C>A>R> the place still had a lot of people that the Mexicans or Colombians could buy. The Republics army was fairly trustworthy. Green made arrangements for an Hawaiian Agent to be sent to their island.
Things were appearing to the former Foreign Minister to be a lot more dangerous than anyone in Hawaii had thought.

Nearly three weeks latter several passengers disembarked from an Hawaiian Merchant ship . One of the Passengers was in no way looked like a native of the Hawaiian island in fact he locked more like he would be at home in the Central American Republic or in most of Latin America. But it was his ancestors that had been Spanish and had washed ashore on his ancestors native land. Sean Patrick Costello had been born in Ireland but he had not lived there since he was a little boy. He had come to America and had traveled to the west and had caught a ship to Hawaii.
For the past 20 years he had live in Hawaii and had become a citizen of that nation. He had been a man of a lot of trades over those 20 years. For the last five he had been a policeman. He was a person who had a knack for unraveling mysteries. He also had a ability to learn languages.
He could speak English, Spanish, Polynesian, Portuguese, the Language of his Irish Ancestors, Swedish and German. When the Hawaiian Secret Service was being formed he was recommended as a recruit.
In fact the Immigration authorities thought that he was from Spain as he had a Spanish Pasport.

Sean Passport identified him as Juan Patrick De Castillo. He began his job of trying to find out what was going on in the country. In particular he wanted to find out who might be working for whom. Sean was a highly intelligent man and he had found out as much as he could about Spain from the Merchant Marine sailors who were in Honolulu and those who might have traveled to there. Fortunately one of the Catholic Priest in Hawaii had originally come from Spain.
Sean's second Mission was to go to Jamaica and find out more about the world situation especially that of the Unites States , Mexico and the Americas. Sean had been well supplied with gold and silver coins as no one would accept paper.
Senor Castillo made trips all over the western part of the Republic gradually finding out a lot more than he should have been allowed to find out but then he returned to the state of Honduras and a port that would allow him to catch a ship to Jamaica . He must find out what the British in the New World knew about what was going on because what he had discovered was not good for anyone.

Having caught passage on a merchant ship Sean was trying to figure out what approach to take. He was not sure if he should be honest or whether it would best to remain under cover as a Spanish Nobleman.
Still the voyage gave him some time to think and to write down everything that he knew in code in his Journal.
He wonder if His superior in the Police force had found a replacement for him . He smiled when he thought of the Detective Inspector. He wondered if he got the promotion that he was up for to Deputy Chief Inspector. He was one of the few people that knew who his late father was. He had certainly proved to be a very capable Police office and one great friend.

As Sean arrived on the Island he was greeted by custom officials. The island was very carefully after several clashes with the Mexicans. While Sean was busy trying to find out everything that he could things were happening. In the Central American Republic there was an assassination attempt that resulted in a shoot out between his bodyguard and those trying to kill the envoy. One of the Bodyguard died of bullet wounds. In Hawaii Thor's Hammer had left on its voyage,
On the Other side of the Pacific Hawaii's envoy had met with the Governor General of New Zealand and Had reached an agreement that would help both the British Empire and Hawaii. The Envoy was now to travel to Australia for talks with the Governor General there regarding trade and mutual co-operation to foreign threats.
Back on Jamaica Police officials following Sean were utterly convinced that he was a Mexican Agent trying to plot to create an uprising. The Governor ordered that Sean be taken into Custody. He suddenly had vanished. Changing from a Spanish Gentlemen into an American. Sean now had to decide whether it was best to talk to the officials on the island or to attempt to get off the island and back to the Central American Republic. He had found out some of the story of what was going on in the US and officials in Hawaii should know it.

In Australia Envoy Bishop was finding problems negotiating with the Governor General there. He had to use his connections in the colony to gain the Upper hand. Bishop had lots of business contacts and it appeared that they came in handy in convincing the Governor General that it was in Australia's and the Empires to foster better relations between the two sides. After talking to the colonies legislature and the Governor General an agreement was reached. It was not as good as he had hoped and better than what things were now.
The tipping point was that the Hawaiians had spotted the former Confederate ironclad, which was part of the Japanese Navy in waters that had not been visited by them.

Finally The Deputy Hawaiian Foreign Minister was ready to begin the long voyage back home to Hawaii. the SS Hawaiian Chieftain was ready for him and it was carrying cargo bound for Hawaii. Also aboard was an Australian Simon Blackwell, he was the nephew of an Australian rancher and had served the crown. He was to serve as the crown's Australian Consul in the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Mr Bishop had a guard on his door as he was considered an important Government official. The Deputy foreign Minister had had some very frank talks with the two Governor Generals and now knew a lot more of the story about what had happen to the world, It was a frightening story and the world situation was a lot worse than anyone had thought.

Sean was not finding it hard to hide from the British authorities on the island. he still had quite a lot of gold and silver pieces . No longer pretending to be the Spanish Gentlemen he was now much more his old self. He had not yet finished his search for information. He had by chance run into a merchant marine captain named Van Horn , who happen to be in Jamaica with cargo to deliver. He offered to buy the captain a meal as he would rather dine with someone rather than alone. Sean was well dressed but perhaps not as well dressed as when he had played the Spanish noble.
The two exchanged stories and our captain began to open up and tell him a tale of an encounter that he had had with the Mexican Navy while sailing in American waters. John poured the captain another drink and listed to the tale of the Important American that had been aboard the ship and his effort to hide> Just when things were really bad they had been rescued from the Mexican by a Royal Navy warship the HMS Vigilant from the very island that they were on. He told them about meeting Lt John RADDY and then Captain Scott, the commander of the warship.
The Tale was an Interesting one and it clearly indicated that Mexico was doing things that it shouldn't do. He also learned the US Grant had died and who the new President was. America had changed a great deal since he left it and not for the better.
The Captain was going to the Central American Republic and would be glad to take him along. Well that solved how he would get back as he needed to get back to Hawaii as fast as possible. Mr Green would want to hear the story too.

ANd so now all that Sean Patrick Costello had to do was to get aboard the ship that was leaving to get back to the Central American Republic and then work his way to the Hawaiian Envoy's compound and catch the ship back to Hawaii. He began to think of all the things that might go wrong including the fact that he never actually arrived in Jamaica as himself. Still Sean was always planning for any eventuality . He did manage to get aboard the ship arranging for a letter to b delivered to Lt John Addy, whom he had met, with a further message for the Governor General.
Sean arrived in his cabin and promptly collapsed into a deep sleep.
It was several days before he woke up. The Captain said that he was going to send someone to check on him. Sean gave the Captain a bottle of fine whiskey as a token of his thanks.. The Ship was a day from reaching the Central American Republic, when the spotted a sail in the distance. The Captain order every effort to be taken to get the ship to safety. And they did reach the safety of the port and its Coastal Defense guns.

As Sean Patrick was making his way south to the safety of the Hawaiians compound things were happening. There was an assassination attempt on Mr Bishops life. His bodyguard was killed in the struggle and the Australian Envoy fired his gun just in time to save the Hawaiian leader..
AS the ship continued its move to the Port of Honolulu it was met at sea by an Hawaiian Gunboat. A detachment of marines was put aboard the Hawaiian Chieftain to make sure that none of these incidents happen again. An examination of the bodies showed marking on the bodies. Sketches were made of the men. There bodies and belongings were also examined.

The Hawaiian Chieftain was met by both the Foreign Affairs Minister and the Prime Minister as well as the Deputy Chief Inspector of the Royal Hawaiian Constabulary and his team. Mr Bishop was escorted off of the ship and left in a carriage with the Prime Minister. It was then that the man who had cracked a number of highly important cases started his investigations. The bodies had been preserved and were taken to the morgue for examination by the Medical examiner. The Australian Envoy gave a statement and was taken to the Hotel by the police. The team checked the quarters of the assassins and then took more statements from everyone. Evidence that had been gathered by the Marines was then turned over to the police.
Latter that day the deputy Chief Inspector came to the Prime Ministers office in the Palace and briefed him, the Attorney General,The Minister of Military Affairs and Mr Bishop on what he had been able to learn.
I would seem that the two gentlemen that were killed were in the pay of some foreign government. Judging from the marking on the bodies there was an indication that they were members of a Japanese crime organization. It would seem to indicate that the Japanese Government might have hired their employers to eliminate any potential threat to whatever plans they had. It would seem that Japan did not want any co-operation between Hawaii and the British Empire.
With that the Deputy Chief turned over his report and stated that the investigation would continue to see if anything further could be learned.

Sean arrived back at the compound totally exhausted. His clothes were in tatters and he was suffering from several injuries. Someone really wanted him dead. He had been cut up in a knife fight and then in a gunfight. If that wasn't bad enough he had been nearly blown up when the train he had been on had a passenger car explode. Then he had had to play hide and seek in the jungle. No he told himself his days as an agent of the Hawaiian Secret Service were over. He would take a nice safe job of routing out criminals in Hawaii. That is if he was able to make it back there.
An Hawaiian Gunboat was to arrive in the port in three days and if he could be gotten aboard he would be safe.

May 25th Captain Wilcox and two other men provided escort to Sean Costello to the port. It was a running gun battle between the Hawaiians and the foreign agents. Eventually the gunfire brought in the Federal Police. By the time it was over One of the Hawaiian escorts was dead and both Sean and Captain Wilcox had suffered Injuries along with 3 Federal Police officers.
Found on the bodies were Mexican silver dollars. Two of the 6 dead were local thugs for hire but the other 4 were found to be foreigners.
It was decided by the Hawaiian Gunboats captain that both men would be taken aboard and brought back to Hawaii. Captain Wilcox's replacement was aboard along with three Marines. They would go to the compound ad protect the envoy.
The Ship had a doctor aboard who operated and left his patients in the care of a Naval corpsman. Both were in good shape although it was a good idea to get them out of the seemingly dangerous Central American Republic.

The Royal Hawaiian Navy was finding itself stretched to the limits. There simply was not enough ships to patrol all of the ocean that it needed to cover. The two cruisers had been on patrol and it was rapidly coming to a time that at least one of them would have to return to port for some maintenance and then the other would have to return. There were now 10 gunboats with three paroling to the East and three to the west . Two more were undergoing maintenance and two more were in route to allow two others to return.
There were some surplus Merchant ships that the Royal Hawaiian Navy was considering Purchasing as Auxiliary cruisers.

While two members of the Hawaiian government were recovering from injuries that they received in the line of duty things were happening in the Central American Republic. It would appear that Some Political and Military leaders had gotten tired of the country being used . Mexico and to a lesser extent Columbia had tried to exert their will regardless. Now began a massive crack down. Mexican Agents would be eliminated. The Mexican Embassy was surrounded by the Military so that no Mexican agent or diplomat could get out. In the meantime arrest were made. By the end of the second week the Mexican spy system was broken.

He also announced that he would be asking for the creation of additional defensive works for the Hawaiian Islands. He asked the Attorney General to look into some of the laws regarding immigration and the oath of taken by all citizens.
There was a threat to the nation from without and the Prime Minister wanted to root it out as soon as possible. He was determined that Hawaii not see the incidents of violence that had plagued the Central American Republic. The last shipment of arms that had been recovered from Canada would be going to the Central American Republic. The Outpost in Vancouver was down to about 100 people. Even in 1870 the city had many services that were not available such as city water and sewers and the beginnings of paved reads and sidewalks in cities outside of the US and the British Empire. The Hawaiian Monarch wanted Hawaii to be the most modern country in the Pacific. Thanks to the Monarch that came before him it had developed one of the most modern health care systems in the Pacific. Hawaii had a very interesting bargaining chip in dealing with the Central American Republic. It had the ability to train the Republic doctors and nurses in the most up to date terms. Currently the Kingdom had 12 medical students and 36 nursing students. The Nurses would complete 9 months of training in Hawaii and then return to ha Hospital that was run by an Hawaiian Company.
Still the prospective students were screened to attempt to insure that no hostile agent made his or her way to Hawaii to do mischief . Manuel Ortega was one of the students that arrived he had passed a lot of the security checks in the Central American republic but this was the 19th Century not the 20th so things were not as exact. Still there was something about the Centleman that didn't seem right to the Immigration agence so his file was flagged and he was put under a watch by the Royal Hawaiian Polices Departments Special Branch. Everything seemed normal at first but then on his days off he started to visit locations near the Military affairs/ Naval department, The Armory, The Foundry and other locations. He would take notes and sometime sketch.
Interviews were made with his teachers and at first everything seemed normal but then he appeared to miss or be late for classes. Special Branch secretly broke into his residence and found a Mexican Made
Pistol and a book that at first glance seemed to be of medical notes but when examined closer the impression was that it was in code.
A worker at the Foundry was found dead three days latter. Killed by a bullet that could have come from a pistol similar to the Medical student.
Finally orders were issued to bring him in for questioning. But when the officers tried to bring him in he shot one of them to death and wounded the other. Then began a manhunt that would continue for nearly two weeks.

Unless they were building with only imported materials it should take shorter. The most prevalent stone in Hawaii is lava rock, called pohaku in Hawaiian. It was used extensively, and to a degree still is, in Hawaii. Probably a photo of Bishop Museum would be the easiest one to find that shows off this dark brown to black stonework.
Iolani Palace itself was entirely of poured concrete. I think you should consider something more in proportion to Honolulu, which may be similar in scale to Aliiolani Hale.

The Hawaiian Naval Department was considering taking several current merchant ships into the navy as auxiliary cruisers. One that they were looking at closely was the ex CSS Tallahassee which had been a warship during the civil war and converted back ito a merchant ship. It had the advantage of having received a complete overhaul before it was purchased.
It was purchased by the Navy and sent into the shipyard for some conversion work back into a warship. Its Provisional Name was the H(Hawaiian) Majesty Ship Lunalilo.( I am willing to consider other names).
The Shipyard had also received enough lumber from outside sources to start work on building 2 Gunboats that would be improvements on the British designed and built ships. Th first ship was designated the Pololu and the second the Pahoa 'Oilua.

The Prime Minister often found disheartening news come across his desk. One of the Reports was from the company that produced almost all of the metal products in the country. If an artillery piece needed to be made they were involved, if a ships engine needed to be produced they were involved. etc. They had acquired the process to make steel before the fall but in order to do it or to make anything they needed various ores, which were not available in Hawaii. It had acquired the resources from the US , Canada, Australia prior to the fall. But due to the Fall nothing was available and Canada had suffered from a winter that just seemed to hand on forever.. The Hawaiians were able to send teams onto Vancouver Island during the "summer; to mine ores such as coal, Iron and copper but that was only possible for perhaps 8 weeks a year. Central America had helped somewhat but coal remained a headache.
The foundry was reporting that even with the stocks of ore that they had they would be unable to produce everything needed. They could produce all of the equipment needed for the construction of the new Gunboat and the metal needed by the Armory to make the guns for it and the rearmed cruiser. But that would mean just two guns could be produced for Coastal defense. The rest of the steel was already committed for rifles, railroad rails, structural steel for buildings. Even with this things would be slow. Hawaii would need more imports and an expansion of its critical industry.

Honolulu: Mr Bishop had an unusual visitor at his office. He was the superintendent of ships. This would have been something that he thought would have fallen under the Minister of the Navy. But it seemed that in the Splitting of the Ministry of Military and Naval affairs the Position that he now held still had some say in the purchase of ships by the navy from the Merchant Marine fleet. The Superintendent it seemed did not think that the purchase of the SS Tallahassee by the navy was a good idea.
Mr Bishop allowed him into his office and asked him to explain his case. He did so and presented a written report noting that the ship would be able to carry just 1 heavy gun. It would be a waste of the Navy's money.
The Navy Minister would not listen to his case but Mr Bishop did and promised to discuss the issue with the Minister and the Prime Minister.
In a meeting with his colleague there was a difference of opinion but when Minister Bishop pointed out that only 1 gun would be able to be mounted on the ship the Navy Minister had a different opinion. He agreed that the ship would be kept as a civilial vessel but would have a naval gun installed and manned by Naval personnel when sailing into potentially hostile waters.

The Prime Minister was considering another potential shake up of the Cabinet as a result of the meeting between the Minister of Military Affairs and the Minister of the Navy. He could not have disputes between cabinet members. Thus it appeared that he might have to find a new Minister for the Navy. Mr Bishop was a close friend supporter or the government and the Monarchy, He had made massive contributions to the welfare of the Nation. Anyone have any suggestions for a new Minister?

The Hawaiian Cruiser was nearing the Marianas Islands. It was that the Gunboat was lost on its last patrol which included a visit to Guam.
So far they had not spotted any merchant ship or even any native vessel. Then just a little bit more than a two days from Guam when they happen to spot a Native fishing vessel. The Native reported having heard thunder in a clear sky several days before but had been to scared to go see what had happen. The Captain thanked them and gave them some goods as a thank you. He altered course to head to the site.
Finally near the island of Rota wreckage was spotted. It was decided to send a landing party to the island and what they discovered would shock them. On the Islands shore was the battered remains of the gunboat.
It looked like it had been smashed by something quite big.

Below the Island of Rota. On the Island they found graves and natives who told them of a great battle between a deamon ship and the Hawaiian vessel. The Hawaiian vessel was heavily damages and the currents brought it ashoe. Most of the crew had died then or several days latter but there were still some crew members at their village and others had been taken south to Guam.

Out of a crew of nearly 200 men all that remained of the crew were 34 men. The Men were transferred to the cruiser where the ships doctor began to treat them.
One of the Sailors had a picture r that he wanted to show them. He had gotten it from an instructor at the Naval school. He said that the ship looked like it.
It was taken to the Ships captain. He said to his first Lt to set course for Guam.

The Hawaiian Cruiser arrived at Guam. They had a conversation with the Spanish Authorities there. It would appear that The Governor General of the Philippines wanted to recall all Spanish troops and Naval Forces so as to be better able to withstand changes.
Thus without any orders to do so he ordered his Marine Commander to land all of the Ships marines. The Captain had another officer and 24 Marines plus 13 sailors from the destroyed Gunboat. The cruiser had managed to recover some of the guns that had been aboard the Gunboat.
The Hawaiian Royal Marine commander was able to recruit some of the Natives to join his force. There were two rather old guns that would be used for coastal defense. By using the sailors as well as natives he had them manned.. Some of the Marin Henry Rifles had bee recovered from the gunboat and it was decided that 16 of them would be issued to Natives that Joined his command.
The Cruiser then headed back to Nauru and from there it would dispatch world to home and to New Zealand.

March 1882 News had arrived in Honolulu of the loss of the Gunboat. Also arriving aboard an Hawaiian Merchant Ship was the survivors of the sunken ship. It also carried the ships guns. They would be checked by the armory
A request was made for additional forces to protect the critical source of Hawaii's revenue as well as to reinforce the outpost at Guam.
There was a terrible argument in Parliament between the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition Mr Dole. Mr Dole objected to a naval officer deciding to land forces on the Island of Guam and claiming it for Hawaii.
The Prime Minister countered that the decision was made so that the island would not be occupied by a hostile force.
Parliament then voted42 to 18 to dispatch additional ground forces. The SS Tallahassee would be carrying supplies as well as additional Marines for Guam. Meanwhile additional army troops would be sent to protect the Island upon which the Navy was now based.

The Prime Minister was Meeting with his War Cabinet-Minister of Military Affairs, Minister of the Navy, Foreign Minister, Attorney General and the Director Of the Hawaiian Secret Service. The Meeting clearly showed that Hawaii was now in a much more dangerous world. Attempts had been made to destroy industries critical to Hawaii's development. Now some outside power had sunk a vessel belonging to the Hawaiian Navy. Hawaii
would need more ships but its ability to build them was limited by the resources that it was able to Import. It would need much more iron ore and other minerals to continue to produce both Civilian and Military equipment.
Nearly 100+ Marines were being sent to Guam. To the critical island that helped Hawaii and other nations to produce explosives another 240 Hawaiian Soldiers were being sent.
By June of 1882 it was clear that the British Empire would be limited in what it could do.

July 1882 the Royal Hawaiian Marines were disembarked from the ship that had carried them. Arriving were 115 marines plus two machine guns, extra rifles and uniforms. A decision was to recruit natives into the corp as well as to create a National guard.. It was estimated that within a year they might have trained enough personnel to expand the defense force to perhaps as many as 600 men including the Hawaiian Marines.
Below the Island of Guam. The Population of the Island had been over 75,000 when the Spanish first came and declined to about 3,600 in 1710 due to stiff resistance to the Spanish. By the time the Hawaiians had taken control it had increased to nearly 40,000+.

Hawaii's Military command was pouring in resources into Guam so as to protect an approach from the north to a critical island. Additional Marines were sent to the island Including t marine Captains 8 Lieutenants,12 NCOs and 12 Corporals. There was enough of a native population that they were easily able to recruit more than 400 volunteers to start with. In fact another 400 wanted to join. The only problem was acquiring weapons.
Hawaii was only able to produce 40 rifles a month.
Forunately the Governor Generals of Australia and New Zealand were concerned enough that they were able to supply the Hawaiians with 4 Cannons and 600 rifles.
Thus Guam would soon have a garriosn of more than 1,000 men.

August 1882 Construction on the two gunboats continues. The foundry continues to report that with demand for more metal products the nation will need to import more. The coal stockpile is of concern. There is currently enough coal stored away to meet the military needs for some time but with increase needs of coal for the merchant marine and to help produce metal project it is questionable as to whether it can continue to be gathered in amounts needed.
Hawaii is slowly developing electrical power using the power of the Rivers and wind to help generate it. There has been some discussion as to whether there is another possible power source that might replace coal.
Mister Standford B Dole deliver an address before Parliament warning that Hawaii was becoming too involved in foreign affairs.

June 3rd, 2012, 07:00 PM
In Hawaii Prime Minister Walter Murray Gibson rose to address the Parliament. He had been thinking how he would address his reply to Mr Doles speech for several day and now he thought was the time to reply.
Prime Minister: I feel that i must now rise to reply to Mr Dole's comments.
Mr Dole has warned us about getting too involved in foreign affairs. Yet I would ask him if we do not involve ourselves then who will assure that our nation survives. We find ourselves in a world that has changes so much from what it was three years ago To our east we find a nation in which some of us were born torn apart as a result of the incident , which has become Known as The Fall. Mr Dole was a proponent for joining the American Union but that possibility is gone.
It would seem that even our friends in the British Empire have suffered. We have offered our hand in friendship to those that have fled from the ravages left by the fall. We continue to work together to maintain the rule of law and to prevent a return to savagery .
I have spoken to his Majesty and have as a result reached out to those people of the Pacific from which this nation is related. The Hawaiian Flag flies from our ship and we represent a nation which is pledged to defend freedom.
Recently agents of our nation have come under attack from those that seek to enslave others. We have lost the lives of men who would put their lives in danger to protect our nation all too often these people have paid the ultimate price. They have died in the Central American Republic and in other locations. Just a month ago one of our nation's s gunboats was on a peaceful patrol of the Western Pacific en-route to Guam. It was attacked and nearly fifty of our sailors and Marines perished by the attack of a foreign power. Why this happen we are still unsure of.
Still the Captain of our Navy's flagship decided to land forces on Guam when he was informed that Spain was withdrawing its garrison to better protect the Philippines. Some in this chamber rose to question the authority of that Captain. But yet it was the people of those islands who rescued the survivors at great risk to their own lives.
I prayed for an answer to what we should do and I talked to many in my Cabinet and to our King.
Let me be clear this nation will not accept any attempt to enslave it.
We will support our friends and oppose our enemies in the defense of Liberty. Hawaii had been chose to this role in this time.
I believe that we are united in a desire for the Hawaiian people to remain free. Those who seek to betray this nation will find themselves facing the wrath of it government and its people. We shall not go quietly into the night but will rather light the way.
With that the Members stood and cheered the Prime Minister and the King, who was in the box above stood and applauded his friend.

September 1882 Hawaii had received a shipment of coal from Australia. It was enough to allow the government and the industry in the country to breath a sigh of relief. August had marked the end of mining operation in Canada so that no further delivery of coal, iron or Copper ore would be coming from there until 1883. Hawaiian trade with the Central American Republic continued to grow. It had supplied the Republic with some additional weapons and was helping in the construction of several ships.
It appeared that Mexican attempts to control the Republic were receding but the same could not be seen to be the case with Columbia. That country was attempting to seize control of more of the region. It had now taken control of Venezuela and appeared to have managed to do the same to its western neighbor.

The remainder of 1882 appeared to be calm in the Kingdom. Progress was made in the effort to provide the country with some source of power other than coal but it was slow going. The Nations foundry had grown but there was still a need to get more imports.
The Hawaiian Navy recalled the Cruiser that was in the Western Pacific and it was replaced by the H(HAWAIIAN) Majesty's Ship Hawaii.
There was no further report of the mysterious ship in the Marianas Islands. In Fact the Monsoons resulted in little activity there.
The Team of engineers that had arrived before the Fall and who had been stuck in Hawaii had come up with a plan that would allow the beginning of dredging the entrance to Honolulu harbor. They estimated that the job would take between 3 and 5 years to complete. But when done heavier ships would be able to enter and leave the port. Work began before the end of the year and continued into the new year. It was slow work.
In January 1883 the Parliament passed a new Navy bill which would authorize the construction of another Cruiser . Wok on the design was started in March.

March 1883 The Navy Ministry was now working with people at both the Naval Shipyard and the Foundry on the possibility of an entirely new design much of the idea was based on the design of the cruiser HMS Iris.
The ship had entered service with the Royal Navy some 6 years ago. It was fast and had a steel hull. Some of the people that had been involved in her construction had relocated to Australia and were willing to act as consultants. They had already provided the government of Hawaii with plans for the ship. In doing so they had received permission from the Admiralty. Two of them were expected to arrive in Hawaii aboard the SS Hawaiian Chieftain.

Work was progressing on the two new gunboats. The imported ore and wood had allowed the ships to move swiftly along in construction. The Hawaiian shipyard was making improvement in the design. The design was based upon the larger of the two British gunboat designs. It was hoped that the first one would be completed by the end of July and the next ship by the start of the next year.
There were elements in the navy that wanted the new cruiser as soon as possible but the shipyard stated that even if the design was approved by the board and the Navy Minister. it would take at least 2 years perhaps three to build the first ship and the second would take 28 to 30months.
Thus it would be nearly 5-6 years before the pair of ships would join the fleet. The catch was also if the foundry could produce the proper steel.
They had already produced better steel than when they had first started but the amount needed would require either a major expansion or limiting what was available for other matters.
It had been made clear to Hawaii that the British government could not produce any warships for Hawaii as all was currently needed for the defense of the Empire.

The New Navy Minister took office and immediately began to look at what projects were underway and what realistically could be accomplished.
He was also looking at the Navy's mission . He found that the two new Gunboats were a great improvement over the ships bought from Britain but that should have been the case as they had been built with knowledge gain from the operation of the British vessels.
The proposal for the construction of a metal (steel) Hull cruiser was to him, a owner of a merchant marine shipping company a move to the future but before he got fully behind it he wanted to meet with the people that would build it. That included the shipyard people and the foundry owner. He did not want to have the Navy start the project and then find that after spending large sums of money and materials it was beyond their ability to build.
As the Navy Minister he toured the Military and Naval Academy with the Minister of Military Affairs. Both were impressed at the rapid rate of construction.

Naval Ministry: The new Naval Minister had finally been convinced that the proposed new ship was a doable project. The foundry had increased in size do to all of the demands upon it and importation of raw materials seemed to be assured. However, the man demanded that stockpiles be made of the materials needed for the ships construction so that a disruption would not leave them with a half finished ship of the need to cancel another project. He was aware that the navy was having to face completion from not only the Army but from industry. That Industry included construction, railroad and shipping as well as arms manufacturing.
It was his hope to make the Naval Ministry just as build as the Ministry of Military Affairs. He also hoped that one day he might hold the post of Deputy Prime Minister and even more of Prime Minister.

May 1883 The H (Ha)MS Lanakila was on patrol in the Eastern Pacific nearing the Canadian it had move to the North but it did not attempt to get anywhere near the Alaskan coast as one could see that everything was white and that there was too much ice. As they proceed south things were not much better until they were just north of Vancouver Island. The landscape was still white but the waters seemed to be lacking of the ice that they had seen .
The captain decided to check Pugget Sound and thought that he might take a look at Vancouver Island. The water was open so he carefully entered the area. One could see that most of the landscape was still covered ith snow and one still needed to wear a coat.
As the ship got closer to the Canadian Outpost the captain really couldn't understand why anyone would still wish to remain in a land that was encased in snow. He could see some green on Vancouver Island.
He decided that it would be best to wait a few more weeks and withdrew back to the Pacific. Sailing as far south as the Oregeon-California border before turning back into the Pacific. Conditions were not in his opion getting any better. In fact he would recomment not going toward Alaska in future patrols as there was too much ICE!

June 1883 SG Wilder addressed the New Graduating class of Naval officers at the Military Academy . He was looking at an expanding Navy that would need more ships. It would appear that Hawaii was going to have to continue to build more of its own warships as well as merchant vessels. This was very hard to do in a country that had to import everything that it would need to do just that.
He and Minister Bishop had met with the Prime Minister about the problem that was currently continuing to face both services and the Nation.
The annual expedition to Canada's Vancouver Island was leaving and hopefully that would mean additional supplies of Iron and Copper Ore as well as coal. The Fact that the Nation was cut off from a supply of coal from the Nation that it had imported it from was the heart of the problem.
The Central American Republic was able to provide Hawaii with a great deal of Ores and to only a limited extent coal. The British Empire in the form of Australian was finally selling some to Hawaii but a great deal of it was needed for the empire's needs.

In the slightly less than three months that it had available to them the Hawaiians removed as much of the various ores that they could from Vancouver Island. There was also an effort to salvage everything that they could. The hardy Canadians that had remained were glad for the Company and the resupply of food and especially the fresh vegetables and fruit.
Everyone that had been on the Mainland had now relocated to Victoria on Vancouver Island. It made it somewhat easier for the Canadians and the Hawaiians. Time passed all to quickly. By early September it was time to leave some of the Canadians asked to go to Hawaii as they could no longer take the winter that seemed to last for 9 months out of the year.

September 1883 The work on the Gunboat and the new cruiser continued. The Cruiser was proving to be a learning experience some workers that had built the original ship in the British Isles had managed to migrate to Australia and had been convinced to come to the Hawaiian Islands to work on the project. There was enough similarity between the two that they were able to help out with some of the problems. But it was certain that the ship was going to take perhaps 3 years to complete.
On the other hand despite the fact that the new Hawaiian Gunboat was larger than the original British ship that it was based on progress was much quicker. The ship would be completed ahead of schedule.

Headquarters Royal Hawaiian Constabulary: The Criminal Investigation division of the department was pushing ahead with all of its resources to locate the missing coal and ore. So far the leads were few. The department could not understand the theft of the ores that had been brought in as there was no other foundry in the islands. A careful check by customs indicated that the ores had not been shipped out of the Islands.
Finally in October 1883 Detective Inspector Sean M Costello of the RHC managed to get a lead onto where the missing coal had been sent. Half of it had been sold to freighters. They were willing to pay cash for a source of cheap coal. That in turn lead to the arrest of several of the thieves and finally to the location of the Missing ore. It was located on another Island. Inspector Costello lead a force of Constables and Soldiers in surrounding the site and then assaulting it and taking everyone into custody.
It would appear that once again a foreign source was behind the act.Anything to delay Hawaii's construction of ships and weapons.
Inspector Costello found that whoever was behind this plot had escaped the net that he had thrown. The Inspector thought that there must have been someone who had warned him. That meant that there was a traitor in the government and that meant a long conversation with his boss.

As a result a redoubled effort was made to smoke out the criminal mastermind. Informers and undercover operatives were now used as well as a show of more police prescience.
The Police and the Security services had begun what would be a massive manhunt for the traitor. Slowly the search was narrowed and it was only a matter of time.

December 1883 Well the year was drawing to a close and the hope for a Merry Christmas was on everyone's mind. Despite some setbacks due to outside causes the Shipyard would launch the First new Hawaiian built gunboat. It would be larger than the largest British built ship and would be armed with a revolutionary new powerful Naval breech loading gun that the armory had designed and test fired on Midway. The same gun was to be used on the new cruiser.
Trade with the Central American Republic was going along but there were still attempts by its two neighbors to intervene in its internal Affairs. Hawaii had managed to manufacture copies of the enfield rifles previously sold to the Central American Republic so as to make it their standard firearm. These were copies of a rifle no longer used by the British Army.
On December 24th the Royal Hawaiian Constabulary with agents of the Royal Hawaiian Secret Serviced proceeded to arrest a number of individuals. Detective Inspector Costello had finally managed to solve the question as to was the traitor . Using plain clothes officers they arrested the Deputy Foreign Minister and two members of the Missionary Party. Found were documents outlining plans to subvert the defense of the islands as well as the entire spy network and it monies. Late January 1884 A period of calm seemed to have descended upon Hawaii. A lot of the tensions felt since the Fall appeared to have rolled away. The King showed a great deal of interest in the new warship and he had a meeting with the naval engineers to discuss some of the ideas that he had come up with.
In a meeting with the Prime Minister he wanted to increase the move to electrify the nation. He had exchanged letters with his friend Thomas Alva Edison, who was presumed lost in the tidal wave that had hit the East coast.
Now the King wanted to move the project forward. The Prime Minister agreed to push for the beginnings of the electrification of the nation but he told the king that it might be 10 years or more before it was completed.
Yet it was that beginning which would see Hawaii as one of the nations to have electric lighting. The new Military Academy complex would be connected.

Still the Prime Minister Knew that the King wanted it and if he didn't get it all hell would break loose. It would be likely that the King would start firing Cabinet officers and the progress that was being made might falter. So the Prime Minister twisted some arms and got enough votes to pass the damn bill by a vote of 27 to 23.
The King was quite pleased that it had passed and that work was to begin immediately. The Power plant had already been under construction with the King providing some seed money to get it started. It was hoped that by the summer one would really see the plan really starting to come together.

April 1884 Things remained rather peaceful in the Hawaiian Kingdom. The new Military/ Naval Academy complex was well under way and it looked like it might be finished ahead of schedule. The Electric generating plant was completed ahead of schedule and now came the process of wiring the island. Wind and Water would also help to produce electrical power.
The king had been interested to read a theory that some day it might be posible to used something called Geothermal power to produce electrical
power. He thought that Hawaii might be able to use that to its advantage.
May 1884 The King had been reading some papers that head been written on the Naval Struggle between the Union and the Confederacy during the late war between the states. He found the story of the struggle between the Monitor and the Virginia to be interesting But even more he came across a rather brief story of the CSS Huntley. The idea of a submarine caught the King's imitation . Luckily he had not discovered that one of the Naval Instructors at the Academy had at one time commanded the vessel in question. Also that the Hawaiian Navy had stored in a vault plans for the late submarine.
The former Navy Minister had been told by Minister Bishop to make sure that they were put in a secure location and that only a handful of people would know about it. The King was already talking about his idea for torpedo boats for the Navy. Something that he had written to the Emperor of Brazil nearly 10 years ago.

Another Gunboat had been completed and work was progressing on the second one. The new cruiser was at least a year from completion at the earliest. things were moving along. Things were quite busy on the island with loads of construction going on. Unemployment had dropped to a new all time low. There was talk of seeking immigrants from Samoa and Polynesia to help with the labor shortage.
Manufacturing, construction, the Military and agriculture were all absorbing more manpower. The construction industry was busy building new buildings such as the military complexes, the Electrical plant, roads, Power lines etc.
Oh the diplomatic front co-operation between the British Empire and Hawaii continued to be good. Most of which was due to a shared interest in maintaining safe shipping lines. Australia and New Zealand were both well aware that they were on their own as the Royal Navy was busy protecting India and southeast Asia. It appeared that Singapore would be the Empire's bastion in the East.
The Governor General of New Zealand had finally approved the New Zealand Parliaments decision to set up a consulate in Honolulu.

May 1884 time was passing by and progress continued to be made on the construction of the Second new Gunboat and the new cruiser.
The Navy was so pleased with the shakedown of the first new Gunboat that
it was pressing for the Naval Secretary to ask for the construction of 4 more of the ships. They would replace 2 of the smaller British built gunboats, which would be sold to the Central American Republic. The Hawaiian built ships were larger and thus would have a longer range and might carry the new Hawaiian Breech loading naval gun.
It had been tested on Midway away from the prying eyes of any remaining spy.
The electrification of the island was slowly advancing. Engineers believed that it would be completed in 18 months but with plans for future expansion it was more like 36 months.
The Hawaiian Railroad had completed work on the island and was now moving on to completing a line on the big island. It would help to move cattle from the big ranches to the port for shipping.

One of the other Big project was the dredging of the entrance to the Harbor. It was now ein its second year and estimates were that it would take at least 2 to three more years to complete.
The King was now pressing Minister Wilder to request funding for the new Torpedo boats that he had designed. There was always the implied threat that he didn't try the King would use his powers to dismiss ministers and let him go. The Minister had the Naval design staff study the Kings idea and he was surprised when they said that the kings idea was very interesting
and warranted a careful look. The Minister in turn went to the Prime Minister and spoke to him about the matter.
Prime Minister Gibson had learned how to deal with his Majesty. In the meantime he would see what funds might be made available to fund work on the project. The Prime Minister would have to explain to the king that the income that they had been making from the Guano sales was not unlimited. It was great that his majesty wanted to improve the quality of life for his subjects but the nation was having to sell government bonds to fund the projects.
At the same time preparations were being made to return to Vancouver Island for the brief time that mining would be possible. It was expected that the amount of ore gained would help especially the coal. Salvage was also something . Some material had been dismantled and shipped to Australia but most went to Hawaii. Victoria was now the Only place that the Hawaiian went to other than a brief patrol of the Mainline coast in Canada.

In Parliament there was a great debate over the Military budget for the next Fiscal year. The Missionary Party was objecting to the seemingly endless spending. To Walter M Gibson this was the final straw. He had addressed this issue in 1883 and here the Missionary Party was doing its best to reduce the ability of the nation to defend itself.
The Prime Minister rose and Upon being given the floor he begin his response.
"Last year I rose and addressed this body giving what I thought was a clear explanation as to why we were doing what were did. I thought at the time that I was clear that there is no other power out there that we can turn to for help. No the world that we are now in requires us to be prepared to do what we can for ourselves. I have also stated that it is also our duty to help those who can not help themselves. Our we not our brothers keeper. If we see a people that are being brutalized is it not our duty to stand up and say that this is not right.
Last year a foreign power sank one of our gunboats. Yet the people of the Marianas Islands did there best to care for those sailors that survived and to help bury those that washed ashore. When Spanish officials left Guam the Captain of one of our Cruisers put ashore marines and sailors to assure that order was maintained and to help those people. Some members of the opposition party made unkind remarks about the Captain of that ship calling all kinds of names. I rose and personally dealt with that matter. Captain Dickerson has since been appointed Governor General of Guam. He is a truly capable officer and a man who cares about his people.
The Captain would be very unhappy to learn that there are still people in this August body that have not learned that this is a changed world.
For those who seemed not to be paying attention last winter this nation came under attack by a foreign power determined to cause as much damage to the Hawaiian Homeland. Members of the Hawaiian Constabulary and the Hawaiian Military then engaged those forces and we were able to break the back of the enemy. The price that was paid was not cheap for in this struggle some of those personnel lost their lives. I feel the loss of each of these lives and so does his Majesty.
I will no longer accept this constant refrain from the opposition that if we don't get involved things would be much better. Grow Up."

With everything on the up swing the Prime Minister was considering calling for a new election. While his party controlled 32 of the 50 seats in the lower house he wanted to see if he could remove some of the Missionary Party's more annoying members. He had in the past got along with Standford Dole but he was becoming convinced that if the Minority leader lost his seat in the Parliament he might cool down and become more reasonable. He would have to speak to the Cabinet first and then His Majesty.
He had pushed through the new Navy bill. It authorized the construction of two additional gunboats over the next three Years and the design work on the Kings proposed Torpedo boat.

Late May 1884 : The Annual expedition to Canada set off with Five merchant ships to carry the ore and a Gunboat> It was expected that they would arrive there in early June and head back in late August. Also aboard were supplies for the those hardy individuals that still made Canada their home. For many of the Hawaiians that had been involved in the run it had lost its novelty. The cold and the snow made things miserable.
When they arrived in Victoria they were greeted by the few that had continued to keep the outpost alive. They Greeted the Hawaiians with questions such as you brought the pineapples and other fruits and vegetables. But it was word that a handful of Canadians had been rescued from the mainland. They told the story of their journey from the east. They were also able to tell them more about what had happen. They had started out by train from Ottawa and it had been one disaster after another. There had been nearly 400 aboard the train. By the time they reached Vancouver, only to find it deserted there were just 60 of them left. They were lucky that some hunter from Victoria had returned to the mainland to hunt. They had been able to arrange a sealift.

Usually guns are tested on a firing range within easy transport of the gunworks. There are a lot of valleys on Oahu that they can test fire in that can be secluded. There is no reason to transport a gun to Midway Island, you could have a firing range on either Lanai or Kahoolawe, two of the smaller islands, or even test fire into the channels around those islands - basically a naval firing range.

David , I would agree with you about the testing of the firing of the guns.
The reason that it was moved to Midway was that at the time there were acts of sabotage and terrorism being used against the Hawaiian government and industry's efforts to provide Hawaii with the best of weapons. That threat has been eliminated and I fully expect that future testing will be done in ranges that are much closer to home.

It was lucky for the people that were rescued from the Canadian mainland that aboard the Hawaiian expedition were a team of doctors and nurses. The medical people had come to check out the health of the people that had remained behind and to provide medical care for the expedition.
Victoria had been prepared to last through the harsh winters that had come. It was doubtful that any of the rescued people would want to remain in Canada. The Hawaiian Gunboat sailed to the American side of the bay to land an expeditionary force to check out conditions.

On the artillery testing range the Army was testing two new artillery pieces designed for the army. One was a new quick firing breech loading gun and the other was a howitzer. The design was such that they would be light weight (compared to current guns) and easy to move and maintain. So far the testing had shown both to do quite well in the requirements. The army wanted a gun with good range, could be fired fast and easily transported. The gun seemed to be meeting the requirements but the minister wanted extensive testing before he would sign off on authorizing funding.
The Navy had completed testing of a new 6 inch gun on Midway and would be testing the gun on the artillery range so that the Naval Minister could observe it. The Foundry had produced an ever larger gun
for the Navy that was considered an 8 inch gun with more of a bunch.

Naval shipyard Hawaii With the new gunboat undergoing its shake down cruise work on the next gunboat was progressing nicely. Parliament had approved additional spending for three more gunboats. This would brind the navy to twelve as there were plans to sell two of the smaller ships to the Central American Republic. Money gained from the sale would pay for a great deal of the cost of the newer ships.
Work on the new Steel cruiser had spend up now that the foundry had corrected a problem with the steel. There was now a serious proposal to fund a second ship.
The Royal Hawaiian Armory continued to test fire new guns for both the Army and the navy. It had also managed to make a copy of the Colt Gatling machine gun. Work on it had been going on since 1881 but there had been problems with it that only recently had been solved. The new model was regarded as a vast improvement over the original.
The foundry's was making to tooling for the armory and production should be able to start in 1885.

Work on the new 8 inch Naval gun was proceeding with hope that it could be installed on the new cruiser. The Hawaii Navy wanted the most powerful gun that they could on the warships so as to be able to defeat any threat.
The Naval Ministry was also doing a study on the possibility of building a larger ship. The ship would be capable of mounting a quite large gun, In effect a predreadnaught. There was a major arguement within the Naval ministry;s staff as to whether it would be possible to build it. The amount of steel required would be incredible. So for now it was just a planned idea.

Below the Version of the Gatling gun currently in Service with the Royal Hawaiian Army. A different version had been developed for the Navy.
The Armory was attempting to produce a version that would be both lighter and more sturdy. It was critical that the army have the most firepower as it could not hope to mobilize as big a military as some of the outside powers.

Some of the ideas that were floated out of the Ministry of Military affairs and the Ministry of the Navy went to the Armory and the Hawaiian Iron and Steel Works and they looked at it . In some of the cases they were saying that it might be possible to do but not with the current supply.
The Armory had worked with the Hawaiian Iron and Steel Works for nearly 5 years on the tooling to build copies of the Gatling gun once it became impossible to buy more. Several efforts were a failure because the metals used were not right. Finally after much effort and the expenditure of time and money they were able to produce the toolings to manufacture copies of an improved model.
An idea to build a battleship for the Hawaiian Navy was found possible but only if they got a lot more ore and built nothing else. Thus it was considered impractical. It was thought that perhaps a larger Armored cruiser might be possible in the future but that would require a further expansion of the plant and with things the way that they were it would be better to concentrate on the doable.
The two Ministers were holding a joint meeting with their weapons development staff in an attempt to limit this expenditures of time and money on things that would not happen.

The new Gunboat arrived in Victoria Canada in Late July 1884 it was making its first cruise. Nothing had gone wrong during the shakedown cruise. The captain had gotten permission to visit and then he could escort any ship that was ready to leave back to Hawaii.
The warship was a welcome sight as it would allow two of the ships to return with the Canadians that wished to lease. Once they arrived in Hawaii they could eighter make arrangements to continue on West to New Zealand or Australia or apply to become Immigrants to the Kingdom of Hawaii.
So far they had been no further problems in the Central American Republic. Hawaii had established relations with Jamaica . Although it required a trip across the Central American Republic. A telegraph line was being built across to allow for more rapid communications.

September 1884 The return of the expedition from Canada brought back more ore but it also brought back journals of an expedition into the American Northwest. The Expedition was done by a combined Marine 'Civilian group that wanted to see what life was like. There was too much snow for everyone. Recorded were abandoned settlements and towns. The group took temperature readings as well as measurements of the snow depth. Trees were checked. All in all it was proof that until the temperatures started to return to normal there would be no possibility of resettlement of the region. With lots of sketches and a few photographs there would be plenty of stuff for the experts to study in Hawaii.

Honolulu, Hawaii. The New Zealand Consulate was quite a busy place these days. It was now representing not only New Zealand but Australia and the Empire. It was currently helping to make arrangements for the Canadian refugees that wanted to to resettle in either nation. There was loads of paperwork that needed to be done.
In addition there were visas that were being requested by Hawaiian Businesses that wished to sell their good in the Empire. Originally the
Consulate had been located in a small business office but now it had been moved into what would be referred to as the diplomatic Quarter.
Currently the complex had included separate complexes for the Central American Republic, New Zealand and Jamaica .

In Hawaii things were moving along. Construction on the next gunboat was moving along quite well . The shipyard workers had now learned how to build the ship and it would appear that the second of the new class would be completed ahead of schedule. Parliament had agreed to the construction of two new ships and it appeared that there was a talk of the navy putting in a request for an additional two vessels. As the Navy was about to receive another new gunboat one of the older gunboats was to be delivered to the Central American Republic. The Hawaiian Navy had trained some of the country's new navy in how to operate it

October 1884 The Hawaiian Navy received its second new Gunboat the H(HA)Ms Paloa. It was the second of what was referred to by some as the Weapon's class. It was larger than the ship that it had replaced and it was equipped with the new Armory made gun. The gun had been tested and was regarded as capable of doing a great deal of damage at a long distance.
The Navy Minister testified before the committee on the construction of even more of these ships. The Minister reported to the Parliament that the second ship had been delivered nearly 5 months ahead of schedule and under the estimated cost.

Guam; The year had seen a series of improvements to the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Island. The Hawaiian government was spending
money on the island to improve the health of all concern. A new Military Hospital was built as a joint effort of the Hawaiian military and the Guam National Guard. Compared to what the Spanish had it was a lot larger and more modern.
Sanitation was something that was also improved. Roads were built and port facilities were also improved. Hawaiian Warships and merchant ships paid visits to the island and from time to time so did an Australian manned warship.
Both countries were still concern about last years incident. Spanish Colonial authorities had reported that several ships had disappeared in Philippine waters. It had limited forces to investigate. One reason for the pulling oit of Guam was to reinforce the troops that it had in the Philippines.

Hawaii The King was not at all happy with the failure of parliament to move ahead with some of his projects. The result was that he dismissed the Parliament and called for new elections to take place in November. The Prime Minister was not unhappy with this as he was pretty sure that the Nationalist/Monarchist Party would once again win another election against the Reformist Party (formerly the Missionary Party).

The Election of 1884 in Hawaii would be a contrast in the vision of Hawaii.
The Nationalist Party supported a Greater Hawaii and a strong Monarchy.
On the other Hand Dole represented a political party that desired a more powerful legislative body with greater limits on the monarchs powers.
There was also a question as to whether the Reform Party would continue with a strong military or if it would move to isolationism.
Should the Reform Party come to power it was greatly likely that military spending would dip and the Parliament would attempt to rewrite the constitution. No matter what it would mean that there would be a vacuum
which migh allow an outside power to take advantage of.

The election campaign was well underway. The Prime Minister was delivering several speeches on the campaign trail. On Guam the population was also preparing to vote to send their first Representative to the Hawaiian Parliament. The Nationalist affiliated candidate was way ahead in the local polls.
Actually for the most part the Nationalist were doing quite well in the polls in Hawaii. Calm had returned to the islands and the amount of crime had dropped back to the level seen before the Fall. There had been massive improvements to Honolulu. Sewers, electric lighting, sidewalks, new buildings, The Island had a functioning railroad .
The Reform Party was making a big deal out of the possibility of conflict with an unknown power.
Murray and Dole were to debate the two parties position. There were some in the British Empire that Favored Dole as they believed that he would bring Hawaii into the Empire on the other hand there were people like the Governor General of New Zealand, who felt that the Natioanalist had proved to be a firm ally of the Empire and that they should remain with them.
Contact with the US had dropped way off. It was becoming rarer for an American ship to visit the islands. Trouble was brewing in California.
Hawaiian Intelligence always had people speak to anyone visiting the islands. It was important to gather information.

The election campaign continued to be heated. It appeared that there was a feeling within the public that Hawaii needed to take a step back. Still The Nationalist had brought prosperity to the nation and the good times were rolling. The new Parliament would have 65 seats. Currently the Nationalist were assured of 16 seats and the Reform Party 15. That meant that 34 seats were up for grab, To win control the nationalist would need to gain 17 seat while the reform Party would need 18.
Currently 6 seats were leaning toward each of the parties leaving 22 undecided.
The King called upon the native Polynesian population to support the Nationalist. Some felt that he had crossed a line but he felt that the Reform Party planned to call for a new constitution which would greatly reduce his powers.
November 1884 Election Day Voters cast their ballots for the new Parliament by the time it was over each party had 32 seats and 1 had been won by an independent. It was unclear as to which way the independent would vote. If either side couild convince him to join them they would have a government with a majority of one seat. The member was finally convinced to allow Mr Dole to form a government.
Doles government push ahead with changes in spending and in Policy but by the end of 1884 he had lost the support of not only the independent but of 6 other reform Party members. These people voted for a resolution of no confidence. As they then approached the former Prime Minister offering to join him in a government of national Unity. Walter Murray Gibson agreed and once again received an appointment as Prime Minister. He did agree to looking at some revisions to the constitution.
Thus the New year of 1885 began with a new dedication to seeking a better world for all of the people of Hawaii.

A commission was formed to study possible changes to the Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The Prime Minister appointed a commission consisting of both elected officials and representatives from the Political Science field. The King was consulted on the appointment and the Prime Minister refused to appoint anyone that wanted to turn the King into a figurehead with little to no powers.
He was hopeful that the commission would come up with acceptable changes to both sides that would defuse this constant banter.
The Prime Minister then submitted to the Parliament a revised budget for both the military and capital improvements. The Military budget would continue the construction of the New Weapons Class of Gunboats and would also begin funding for a second steel cruiser.
The new cruiser was expected to be completed and ready for its shakedown cruise by the summer of the year. The Second ship would then be laid down and was expected to be completed by 1888.

Is the Reform Party as in OTL or more centrist?
For the short term, the National Party seems the more appropriate, but in the long term Hawaii will benefit more from the Reform party.
