Have you read Tutledove's TL-191 Series? Canada is annexed to the US in 1917

Harpers nomination may help heal some of the Canadian animosity. Those that really depends on whether the Republicans are still really a minority party or have gained significance again.

Your initial post mentioned an economic slowdown, but other than that we know almost nothing about the state of TL-191 in 2012. Its hard to give any sort of opinion without such information since we don't know what the major issues will be for the 2012 election.

Some of the things that would be helpful to know would include:

What is the state of US foreign policy? What nations are allies, which ones are seen as threats? Are US forces engaged in combat anywhere? How does the rest of the world look? Which empires if any are still intact?

How are the South and Canada? Successfully integrated, peacefully seeking independence or seething with secessionist terrorists?

How developed is the US social welfare system? Is there universal health insurance?

How is the rest of the US economy? Is something like Taft-Hartley on the books or are the unions much stronger then in OTL? Which industries if any have been nationalized?

Are social issues going to matter in the election? If so how do the parties come down on them.

Have there been any major historical events since the end of GW2?

And of course any biographical information you could post on the various candidates would be helpful. You've given some interesting hints already, but the more you flesh it out the easier it is for us to respond in detail.

US Foreign policy is noted by oil wars in Arabia and Mesopotamia after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 2003. Also US is beginning to implement a "lead from behind" campaigns in ordeals such as the Rajastan Civil War.
Allies include- The Empire of Austria-Hungary, after Croatian independance it really just includes Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Hungary and Slovakia, The German Empire, the long time ally, The 4th French Republic, in the state of OTL Germany, a powerhouse economy bailing out every little Balkan republic in the European Economic Community. The Kingdom of Great Britain, a manufacturing giant, people find it difficult to friends with them and The Republic of Australia, the great vacationland of Oz. Along with Quebec, Texas and a couple oil drenched dictators are in there as well. Threats- The Empire of Persia, the Shah is uncomfortable with US and German involvement in the former Ottoman Empire, The Republic of China, after developing a superbomb last year, this totalitarian state moved up to second on the watchlist, and The Empire of Japan, after losing Indonesia and Malaysia is weaking.
Current combat in Yemen and Al-Kuwayt. I pretty much explained the set of the world with the allies.

How are the South and Canada? Successfully integrated, peacefully seeking independence or seething with secessionist terrorists?

Integrated successfully, Canada more so than the south, no secessionist movement in Canada, in the South it goes by state, for example; North Carolina and Florida are highly integrated but Alabama and Mississippi are barely integrated with Neo-Freedom Neo-Confederate Sons of Freedom common.

How developed is the US social welfare system? Is there universal health insurance?

The US social welfare system includes disability coverage and food stamps. Both are controversial. Most Democrats and Republicans hate them. No universal health insurance. In fact the Republic of Australia is the only country in the world that has universal health insurance.

How is the rest of the US economy? Is something like Taft-Hartley on the books or are the unions much stronger then in OTL? Which industries if any have been nationalized?

The US Economy is not so hot. In early 2010 the economy took a nosedive. People blame the unions for that actually. The unions told members in New York not to go to work for a week and then the economy collapsed with New York standing still. No industries have been nationalized

Are social issues going to matter in the election? If so how do the parties come down on them.

Yes they will. Dems will be on the right, GOP in the center, Socialists on the left

Have there been any major historical events since the end of GW2?

Not really. There was a cold war between the US and Japan, and of course the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

And of course any biographical information you could post on the various candidates would be helpful. You've given some interesting hints already, but the more you flesh it out the easier it is for us to respond in detail.
I'll do that later, but you can do that if you want. You seem pretty excited about this.

This tough woman who is Alakaya's current Governor, is loved by the libertarian, centrist Alaskayans. She was born in central Alberta as a die hard, rock ribbed Democratic. The troop leader of Alberta Young Lady Democrats #322, she switched to the GOP when she saw some other Young Democrats beating a teenage girl who had just had an abortion. She moved to Alaskaya and became prominant in the GOP working her way to state governor all while hunting moose and driving her kids to hockey practice.

Next, Mitch Daniels "The Midwest Trooper"

Stephen Harper- "The New American"

Born in Toronto, the capital of the great state of Canada*, Stephen Harper, or Steve as his friends in the Senate would call him, was a graduate of the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree in Economics and a minor in Petroleum Economics.

Steve Harper became an employee of Standard Oil-USA in 1980 with the help of his father. Promoted to Vice-President of Operations-Alberta in 1983, Harper would be the face of Standard Oil's expansion in the northern plains states (as most of western Canada had become known as).

Elected in '96 as a Republican, Harper would spend the next 16 years pushing for energy indepedence, states rights, and a hawkish foreign policy.

Harper touts an energy plan that relies on the use of natural gas as the main fuel of electric/heating production as well as transitioning towards using it to fuel most automobiles. On the issue of Gay marriage Sen. Harper has stated he supports leaving the issue to the states to decide, an that if elected would not move to overturn laws for or against it at the state level.

*I'm not sure but Im guessing Ontario would be called Canada in this scenario

The Republican Party's strong candidates have lead to some strong debates, with Ontario Senator Stephan Harper leading the pack at approx. 30% of register Republicans to vote for him. Sarah Palin, Alaskaya Governor and Evan Bayh, US Representative from Indiana's 3rd district are tied at 19%. Another Indiana hometown boy, fmr. Governor Mitch Daniels is just behind at 16%. In last is fmr. Speaker of the House Brian Mulroney and fmr. Ohio senator John Boehner, the 2008 candidate which almost brought the GOP to victory both polling at 7%. This has been NCNN reporting from Toronto, Ontario.

Harper wins Iowa, and has New Hampshire wrapped up. Until the South, where he faces competition from Bayh, he's got it fairly wrapped up. He seems like the GOP nominee for the this time.
