As much as I love the country, I'm both puzzled and pissed that she's chosen to maintain ties with the States.

What would trigger a widespread, if not complete, detestation of the Yanks soon after 9/11 and continuing to the present day?

(Bonus points if you can somehow forge a union between Denmark, Canada, and New Zealand whose twofold purpose is to torment the US and to encourage awareness of these three often-overlooked nations.)

What on earth is wrong with a country maintaining good relations with the US? If you want to make the country hate the US, have it develop some fascist or fundamentalist political movement, or just make the people more ignorant of the US.

That could work. So, are there no limitations on the POD?

None whatsoever. It would certainly be more dramatic if it were later on, though; sudden changes are always a fascinating thing.

Because, what if the U.S. won't get out of Greenland and Iceland after World War II?

Or if Danish peacekeepers on a UN mission suffered one of the US military's many friendly fire incidents. And then refused to apologise for their error. Not like it's an unlikely scenario or anything.

How about:

A different Canadian, more pro-Bush, conservative government is amenable to joining the Coalition of the Willing (why? Any ideas from our Canadian friends? Something to do with beef and softwood lumber, perhaps?)

At the same time, the Danish government opts to stay out, stating it can not commit troops to such an open-ended and questionable undertaking. They still permit use of its airspace and do not criticise it or anything, but they explicitly don't join in.

A few weeks later, the United States expresses its support to Canadian claims to Hans Island and proposes a UN Security Council vote. Maybe there is even some ill-advised talk of 'allies and *close* allies'.

The Danish people now know what you get for politely disagreeing with Uncle Sam and decide next time they won't be polite.

Something with Greenland. Maybe just a evil super imperialistic US goes and conquers it (though why they would god knows)

Nike decides that a nation of wooden shoe wearers probably doesn't buy alot of high-tops and uses corporate influence in the US Gov't to sponser sanctions against Denmark to open up their shoe economy.

Well, because many Europeans see the Bush administration's policies as abhorent and thus are confused why their countries have continued to suck up to the USA in a period when it would seem that national interests are being over-ridden by US global imperialism

However, I would agree that the best POD for this thread is either a continued US occupation of Iceland, or a Cold War occupation of Greenland

One thing to consider is that Hitler DID have invasion plans for Iceland. It would be one hell of a push, but it was more feasible than Sealion. If these had gone ahead, then the US would not have been able to take over Iceland when it did, instead waiting till later to invade perhaps as an alternative to Torch or something, something as a practice for a later invasion of Europe

If the US does this in WW2, and also invades Greenland and the Faeroes, and after the war supports either native governmental options, or takes them as protectorates as per the Marshalls in the Pacific

And to exacerbate things, cites the Monroe Doctrine as a reason NOT to return these areas?
