Extremely unlikely, given that he was just a world class athlete at the time he chose to come to America. If he stayed in Austria his subsequent film career would never happen, and he would have to pursue another, probably continuing in sport. I doubt that he would ever be regarded by Austrians as presidential material (although one never knows; Governor of California? And he turned out to be a fairly good one).

Popular wisdom to the contrary, a lot of the problems stemmed from a recalcritant legislature.

And just what would you have done differently, hmm? With any possibility of success? I don't think he's a saint, but he did as well or better than most of his predecessors.
As for me being ASB, ... <whispers to associates> "knows too much; eliminate him" ... not as far as I know.;)
