As pretty much everyone knows, on 1 September 1983 a Russian interceptor nearly shot down Korean Air Lines flight 007 over the Sea of Japan. Given that the a sitting US Congressman, Lawrence McDonald, was among the 269 passengers on the New York to Seoul flight, what would have happened if the Soviet pilot had actually fired and shot the airliner down?

Well, I suppose if it happened, then this video would have been released, and the song included on Victims of the Future.

As it stands, it's a little known gem dealing with alternate history.

Well, the extra fear/tension might have been enough to give Reagan a landslide in '84.
If the "2nd Cold War" had lasted longer and trumped the poor economy as an issue, perhaps Mondale would have defeated Gary Hart in the Democratic primary. Charisma-free Mondale wouldn't have held his own in debates, much less on the stump.

On the flip side the hardliners would probably gain control in the Soviet Union, which combined with a Reagen victory could have led to Nuclear Holocaust

Then McDonald wouldn't have gotten to win(or should I say steal?) the '88 election, and nearly gotten us all blown up TWICE during his single term in office(particularly during the Iraqi crisis in September, 1990 but also during the gov't crisis in East Germany in November, 1989.). Not to mention the fact that the McDonald administration turned a blind eye to REAL terrorist threats, both foreign & domestic, as well as his attacks on women and the Civil Rights Movement.
This guy ended up being so hated(you can thank one John Loftus for that, btw.), that a disgruntled NAVY Seal by the name of Richard J. Stokes finally blew his brains out in Fort Worth, Texas, back on Christmas Night, 1994 during a fundraiser hosted by none other than Pat Buchanan and the Koch Bros. And you know what? Screw it. Worst president in U.S. history, bar none. In fact, about the only people who really mourned his death were the neo-Nazis and many other types of far-right riffraff out there.
OOC: I do hope nobody kicks me for this. Trust me, though, Larry McDonald really was a sack of crap. Look up his Wiki bio and 'Western Goals' sometime.

Wasn't it rumored that Nixon almost took that flight?
(OOC: Agreed on McDonald)

I think so, but I don't know for sure, TBH.
