On 20 July 1951 King Abdullah of Jordan was assassinated on a visit to Jerusalem. His grandson, Hussein, became king. What wasn't generally known at the time was that Abdullah had been engaged in secret talks with the Israelis with a view to establishing a permanent peace treaty covering the West Bank and Jerusalem.
Such a treaty would doubtless have marginalised the Palestinians but if Israel and Jordan had achieved a workable peace in 1951, could it have prevented or mitigated against much of what has happened since ?
