As we all probably know, following a fundraiser dinner, then Labour leader John Smith suffered a heart attack and following it he decided to step down as Labour leader and shortly after as an MP.
I apologise if this comes across as morbid, but what if the heart attack had killed him. Smith remained a major voice in Labour and British politics as a whole for many years afterwards. What do forum members think might have happened to British politics and something I find rather interesting. Would the 1997 general election have played out differently?

More seats as Smith isn't there to get Brown to fight Blair and He Who Smiles might have gotten more English seats and the Tories would have lost close calls like PM Portillo but the majority OTL is still enormous.
We might have a more Europhillic country and may be in Iraq if Blair was telling the truth about why he resigned but that's for another day.
Without John Smith still living we wouldn't have that Doctor Who joke they use every other episode.:p

so thats why he stood down, he was a time lord!
(Does that make Harriet Harman his companion? ew)
OOC: Blackadder, are you saying Tories won 1997? or that the Smiler got a reduced majority compared to OTL

OOC: Tories win 1997? No such thing.;) I'm saying that the Smiler didn't get as much English seats and Portillo became PM in 2010 since PM Brown isn't really going to stop the Credit Crunch.
Yep, Doctor Smith is going to save the universe by sicking his companion on them.

Would there have been the Lib Dem/Labour pact? Voting Reform? I mean it was in the Labour manifesto, but I doubt Blair's intentions on it were really that sincere.
