California suffers a massive earthquake and sinks into the sea. What happens next?

Bollywood, NYC and HK step up production big time. Lot of Woody Allen Kung-fu singalong epics hit the screens.

Religious right gives praise to God for wiping out the USA's porn industry. East European porn industry gives praise to God for wiping out USA's porn industry.

Europeans, Chinese and SE Asia fight it out to replace USA's computer industry. Various new operating systems proliferate. FrenchDoors(TM), ChineseWalls(TM) and Verandah(TM).

Washigtonians start 'see sunken California' cruises.

Dramatic fall in USA AIDS cases.

Huge opportunities open up for new British character actors.

Stench of rotting fast food hangs around for 50 years.

The porn part is funny, but I don't get the fast food stench.

You must live far from a major city?

Ha ha! I have started a trend of boredom that sinks whole nations into the sea! :D

How deep under water is California? I could see, maybe, some submarine tours later on; with subs equipped with heavy-reinforced glass so people can see the sunken Hollywood sign and other famous landmarks.

Well, after the United States recovers from the recession that results from the loss of 14% of the USA's GDP. California makes nearly 2 trillion dollars a year, greater than every single country in the world except for China, Japan, Germany, and the UK. If California's economy was considered independant, it would be greater than that of France. The loss of this state would be absolutely devastating to the United States' economy.

There would also be a massive population loss. California has 35 million people, a good 2 million more than all of Canada. This state has the most electoral votes as well, and the loss of this state will make it much easier for the Republicans to hold onto the presidency.

Microsoft is in Seattle, I believe. No joy there...

No joy in Seattle! What a terribly sad place. Can we sink it along with California and put them all out of thier misery?

Hey! I rather like the city. I don't know what you people's obsession with bright, skin-burning sunlight is, but I don't share it. Seattle's perfectly nice.

There would be a tremendous social impact. Think about how many families have had members move to California. There are a lot of key research facilities in California as well so not only would we be losing land we would also be losing brain power.

If a sufficiently large earthquake occured to cause California to fall into the sea, the impact would be felt nation wide. The tidal effects would make the last tsumani small by comparison.

It would take decades to recover. The damage would be worldwide. A lot of businesses in California have linkages overseas.

The US military would suffer a tremendous loss. All the resources/ships in San Diego-San Francisco harbors would be gone. Also the land & air bases would be gone as well. (This would a real issue since the military would be heavily involved in rescue and public safety)

For us in California it would solve the illegal immigration problem. But on a serious note, with our economy tied to so many other countries, the world would 'feel our pain'

Johnestauffer, so that would be a thumbs up from North Korea as California goes down? It is an ill wind and all that ...

Would the ships docked there sink, or would we have a row of ships on what used to be coast?

I agree with Forum Lurker... Seattle is much better than California. I lived in San Francisco and would not go back from here. Please do not sink Seattle. If you need to sink Redmond to kill off windows, go ahead though.

The Great Basin fills with Water, and Utah finally gets Beach Front Property and the Glorius Mountains of the Wasatch, Unita, and Rocky varity. With the increase in fishing rights, the mormons become wealthy and Utah gets the majorty of new imigrints. In 12 years you have President Mike Levitte.

I know I know, they already are but the general population is hardly that rich. Besides, they own how many acres of Cali altogether?
