Envelope color change on viewing (not)

When I view a thread posting the little envelope to the left has it's color changed to mark it as read. Unfortunately, if I just visit this site, the envelope color changes. How do I make it so it is not marked as read when I haven't read it?

I don't know of a way to do that.
