JFK, CAROLYN TO SPLIT, BUT SAY ONLY TEMPORARY

Washington, D.C., Aug. 30, 1999

- In a press conference today, John Kennedy announced a trial separation from his wife Carolyn after three years of marriage. He cautioned: “I would advise you against writing this marriage’s obituary at the present time.” Rumors have abounded that First Lady Hillary Clinton will seek to replace retiring Sen. Pat Moynihan next November, but are as yet unconfirmed.

MCCAIN, BUSH ANNOUNCE RUN

- Washington D.C., Sept. 15, 1999
“Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Arizona Sen. John McCain announced bids for the Republican nomination in next year’s presidential election today in Austin and Phoenix respectively. Sen. McCain vowed to “reclaim America from the special interests that are hurting taxpayers” while Gov. Bush vowed “to make America great again.” For now, these are the Republican frontrunners, and we are assured of an interesting race for the GOP nomination.”

“I’m interested in that seat, but still plan to meet with the President and Mrs. Clinton to discuss the situation. Not interested in a fight that would only result in Republican victory.”

JFK Diaries, 20/09/99

“Met with the Clintons at the W.H. today. To my pleasant surprise, Hillary had already decided to seek the Illinois seat rather than the New York one. The President warned me that “the Republicans will shred you on family values if you divorce Carolyn.” He also mentioned Rove & Co., the nastiest and most effective GOP operative since Atwater, if not worse. Nevertheless, I think we can come to an agreement, but I cannot send the signals to the Democratic leadership before this is resolved.”

MOSELEY-BRAUN RESIGNS DUE TO IRS INVESTIGATION
- Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun announced she would resign her Senate seat effective upon the naming of her replacement. The I.R.S. has been investigating $50,000 in unpaid taxes, and she said: “I cannot serve the people of Illinois while under criminal indictment.” Gov. George Ryan has appointed Republican Peter Fitzgerald to serve pending a special election in November.”

“It seems that we’ve come to an agreement regarding all the trouble. Now Carolyn & I are back together, and we can get on with our lives.”

“Preparations are nearly complete, but a tough fight is looming with Giuliani. If he wins the GOP nomination as expected, it will be one hell of a fight- especially if Karl Rove intervenes on the Mayor’s behalf. In that case, the “family values” attack would be blunted, given his own past.

DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN: JFK DECLARES SENATE CANDIDACY

Washington, D.C., Jan. 2, 2000

On the 40th anniversary of his late father’s campaign kickoff in 1960, John Kennedy has announced his candidacy for the Democratic Senatorial nomination in New York. The Class 3 seat was held by his late uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, from 1965 until his June 1968 assassination and speculation abounds that term-limited Mayor Rudolph Giuliani will face Kennedy in the general election…”

GIULIANI SEEKS GOP NOD

New York, Jan. 5, 2000

“Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced that he will seek the Republican nomination for the New York Senate seat, and will likely face off against Democrat John Kennedy Jr. in the fall election. The Mayor harshly criticized Kennedy’s “utter lack of political experience or qualifications. He does not understand the problems of New Yorkers and has no qualifications apart from his surname- which is not a qualification for the United States Senate. I am reminded of a 1984 campaign ad: Where’s the beef?”
