Under what circumstances (and when) might he have been persuaded to run , who for and with what result in so far as policies are concerned ? I mainly know of his post-ACW career that he was involved in suppressing the Indians, seeing them as a barrier to development, especially of the railways. I suppose he would have had this idea as a central one of his administration, but in this period who didn't ?

Possibly make him a Radical Republican running in 1876, he of course was hated in the south worse than Lincoln, and its possible he'd continue Reconstructionism, but I think he was a Democrat. Perhaps hes convinced to run in 1876 by proposing to end reconstructionism in the south if elected? I know little of his post-Civil War dealings, all I know is he is considered the Scorn of the South and hero to the Union.

It probably require something of a radical change as this biography of him

http://www.civilwarhome.com/sherbio.htm

states
"He retired from the Army on February 8, 1884.He was noted for his absolute refusal to be drawn into politics. In 1886 he made his home in New York City, where he died on February 14, 1891."

Oh well, seemed like a good idea, lol

In Kurt Giambastiani's AH Fallen Cloud Saga Sherman does appear, in a passing reference, as a US President that had been assassinated. I don't think anyone has really tried to figure out the timeline for that series.

"If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve" - Sherman in 1884 after refusing to run as a Democrat.

democrat.
thats not republican.
he might run, if he is pressured by radical republicans
possible words to make Sherman run:
"you're the nation's hero. you helped preserve the union in the 1860s! you can help preserve it now!

I wonder if Sheridan would make a better AH president ?

But in his case I think it would have to be INSTEAD of Grant

After he retired in 1884, Sherman was an early contender for the Dems nomination until he said the above quote that I gave.

Well, in my TL (posted under the title Lee Doesn't Surrender in 1865) I had Sherman as president after Johnson.

The thread was pretty controversial (the POD being that Lee takes Porter Alexander's advice, telling the men to scatter into the woods), but after Grant was unable to pin down Lee and his band of guerillas (not a statement against the abilities of Grant or the Federal armies), true to Army of the Potomac tradition, he was summarily replaced with Sherman.

Shermans scorched earth policy didn't really accomplish much in terms of rounding up the rebels, but it did make him popular in the North, leading to his presidency in 1868.
