View Full Version : The US Army Vs. The Daleks !

I used to be a fan of the British Sci-Fi Show DR WHO when it first came on American TV back in the 1970's with Tom Baker. Among the baddies I liked were the omnipresent Daleks...

It seemed to me it took the British UNIT forces a devil of a time in trying to destroy them with their conventional weapons...

But what would it be like if the Daleks took on an American Army or Marine Unit equipped with M-79 Grenade Launchers, Mortar Support, or M-113 APC's ?

The Daleks would take out a bunch of the Ground Pounders but with due respect to the British Military, an American Unit would use better tactics against them...

I mean I killed me seeing the UNIT guys trying to knock them out in an up close battle...An American Unit would use proper cover and call in Arty Support if the situation called for it...

And how would those Parrot Sounding Daleks fare against a motivated Armour Unit ?

Feedback ?

A lot of the problems of perception with the daleks refers to the BBC special effects budget. The comic strip serves them better and is more realistic. They just wouldn't be landed as foot (wheel) soldiers and then fend for themselves. The saucers, and especially the hover-platforms would be used. In addition, there is a special weapons dalek hybrid bastard thing in Remembrance, where we also see them able to mount stairs (!). It seems to me that aerial support would be a massive element of dalek attacks. One assumes this would also be accompanied by planetary bombardment from orbit

Hi, IIRC, Daleks had casings made of some un-earthly "alloy" that was *seriously* resistant to conventional weapons.

For analogy, I'd suggest the early 'Stargate' episodes when SG-1 had significant problems with segmented armour & staff-fire: There was a steep and oft-painful learning curve...

Didn't one of Dr. Who's later Companions 'ace' a Dalek with RPG ??

TV Daleks a-foot would seem vulnerable to eg anti-tank weapons, satchel charges & such, but their eponymous 'exterminator' beam offers fair point-defence capabilities. Think Phalanx vs anti-ship missiles, or active tank armour. The casing's resistance to small-arms suggests that mortar shrapnel would be harmless. Really, you're talking 'Whippet Tank', armed & armoured per M113, but a significantly smaller and more difficult target...

Also, please remember that UK equivalent of US National Guard is *much* smaller and lacks local armour & air support, while UK 'gun culture' is 'mostly harmless'. Put it this way: the one person I know who has a gun at home is a US Civil War re-enactor with a black-powder licence...

Hmm: I helped a colleague build a Dalek for his nephew, and it made a token appearance at that 'Day of the Daleks' convention in Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool.

( OT: What idiot booked Dalek convention into hotel on steep hill with more stairs than a Snakes & Ladders board and *poor* ramp access ?? The bemused UNIT contingent was drafted to carry dismantled Daleks hither & yon... ;-)

As I remember the background info, those casing 'bumps' were sensor nodes, giving the casing's occupant a lo-res fly-eye awareness of surroundings. The Eye-stick was just the hi-res & precision targetting component.

If recent evidence is any judge, the US army would go into the fray with all their brilliant technologically advanced armaments, and end up hitting their Cybermen allies.

My money is on the Daleks.

Of course Dr Who would, though, turn up at the right time & save the day. ;)

As a matter of interest to the Brits - how's the new Dr Who series going?
