View Full Version : Solomon's World

A while ago I was thinking about different AHs I wanted to explore - an Islamic superpower, a Puritan and socialist Britain, a cartoonish Confederacy, Dutch Australia - and I thought "Hey, why not do all of them at once?" ;)
This is the result. It's not meant to be a realistic timeline, hence posting here. Basically it features the mysterious crosstime stryder "Solomon" adjusting things so that we get all of these in one world. Here's a 1980 labelled map, but bear in mind all the "PSR"s should be "PLRs" - it stands for Puritan Levelled Republic.

And here's a European map. This is basically just a timeline to have fun with.

Finally, here's a North American map. I'll post a timeline and flags if anyone's interested.

Evidently no-one's interested, but I'll post some flags anyway! :p

And here's another, better worldmap, this one done using Diamond's excellent template:

Neat. You forgot the legend for the map. The flags are nice. Why did you spell stryder with a 'y'?

I like the flags- But one question about them- Why does the Papal States flag look so obviously evil?

Can you post the original map for your North American map?

What exactly is a Puritan Levelled Republic? I can obviously figure out what a Puritan Republic would be, but where does the 'Levelled' come in? Does that signify the equal status of every man under God or something? It does sound cool tho - innocuous and sinister at the same time. :D

Whoa, OK, I'll try to answer everything before I have to go off to my Chemistry lecture in 5 mins...nice for the interest, though. :)
47: Here is the key.
Imajin: Thanks! The Papal States flag is so because it was formerly the Kingdom of Naples, and thus has Neapolitan and Aragonese symbols. I based it on some archiac flags I found on fotw.net.
Mikey: I'll post my OTL version of the map in a minute.
Diamond: The Levellers were essentially the prototype for socialists (a simplification but you get the idea). They wanted to stop feudalism and every man should be equal. They were suppressed by Cromwell, but in TTL after the Freedish War for Independence there is a Leveller coup and the party ends up being legalised. After which the Cromwellist party, the Independents, compete with the Levellers and the conservative Whigs for elections. In TTL Carl Marks (anglicised) writes The New Leveller Manifesto , which is the blueprint for the devolution from Imperium to Commonwealth during the Leveller regime in the 1920s.

And this is OTL version of the North America map, Mikey (bear in mind that all of Mexico is not on as I made this to show Turtledove's Great War scenario with Sonora and Chihuahua).

Why do most people exclude Mexico and all the other Centro American nations from North America. From a geographical point of view Costa Rica is North America in the same way Oregon is.
Maybe we shold talk about Waspamerica and Wetbackamerica...

I'd have liked to include Mexico, as it's important in this scenario, but my map only went down to the US/Mexican border and I just hand-drew the borders of Sonora, Chihuahua, Baja California and Cuba as I was using this map for Turtledove's Great War scenario.

OK, I just wondered about why we use the term North America just for the USA and Canada. I remember how I was shocked when I heard that one Mexican football player in a Spanish team was referred as "north American". I realized then that in fact, geographically speaking, a Mexican, a Costarican, or even a Cuban were as North Americans as any U.S. citizen.
I do not know, but maybe that is some sort of racism. What do you think?

Probably. My old encyclopaedia divided the Americas as "Latin America, and the two anglophone countries" (which must brass the Quebecois off no end!"

This map shows the different power blocs.
Blue = the Commonwealth of Puritan Levelled Republics (as you might guess, this is roughly analogous to the USSR and the most powerful of the Christian powers);
Yellow = the Entente Catholique (theoretically an alliance of the Catholic Royalist powers against Puritanism and anti-Royalism, but in practice includes the mostly democratic and thoroughly Protestant Confederate States of Columbia for reasons of realpolitick);
Black = the Moskva Pact (a recent alliance between Germany and Russia in which German technology is backed up by Russian manpower and resources - ultimate aims include the repartition of the Hegemony of Lublin);
Orange = the Orange League (initially a Dutch-Scandinavian alliance, then joined by other powers, many of whom were always being picked on, thus forming a neutral bloc);
Green = the Abbasid Caliphate and allies (culturally dominates the world to the same extent that the US does in OTL, with the most advanced technology; it also has a flavour of the EU as its population is often fairly liberal compared to those of the Christian powers and war is rather unpopular. However, the Caliphate military (Ansar al-Khalifiyah) could probably defeat everyone else in the world put together. Theoretically Muslim, but religiousness has largely fallen off over the past couple of centuries save for a few conservative groups. Includes the self-governing Greek Republic, the Protectorate of Ethiopia, and the Holy Land Free State).

I'll be posting some of the spacecraft designs now. Firstly here is a Russian Tsarevich-class fighter (note the similarities to OTL's Soyuz):

Because sometimes it's more convenient to talk about Anglo America and Latin America + Caribbean than North America and South America. I'm sure you'll admit that Mexicans have more in common with Colombians and Peruvians than they do with most Americans?? And, oftentimes Anglo America is called "North America" because it's the northernmost part of the Americas. Sort of how the Republic of South Africa is not really all of Southern Africa.
