WI Louis Mountbatten was not killed by the IRA in 1979? Would that have greatly affected the IRA's situation? Would Mountbatten have led any great reforms or changes to the United Kingdom if he had lived longer?

I doubt he would of lived much longer if he had not been killed. One has to remember that he was a WWI vet. Just how many were still around then.

He was a WW1 vet in his teens, it's not like he joined up in August 1914. That being said he was 79 when he died. Still it's possible he could have hung on until the 1990's and could well have influenced the Prince of Wales choice of wife.

That is just what I was thinking, also at the time he was assassinated he was campaigning for the royal family to return their surname from Windsor back to Battenberg.

Er... AFAIK, the royal family's surname would go back to being Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, while the Mountbattens would go back to being Battenbergs.

I think he was after the Battenberg being adopted as Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was a bit of a mouthful.

Sounds about right for Mountbatten's ego.

:D and with his influence over Charles it's quite likely he would have been able to stop a marriage to the Spencer family.
