Getting a naval veteran elected president earlier would be interesting, especially as modern history has seen many of them (Kennedy, Nixon, etc....) However, in the post-Civil War era, So, we come first to a man who actually was courted for the Democrats in 1900- Admiral George Dewey. Can anyone speculate how he would have run if not for his apolitical comments? And then, are there any other earlier candidates for the post?

Stephen Decatur might also work.

Was the navy large enough to produce all that many presidents before that period?
