Lets say that magic existed centuries ago. Much of the fairy tales
(but by no means all )were based on actual facts. It just happened that
eventually a certain group, including a number of rogue wizards
came upon a global magik-destroying spell. Magiks can no longer be
performed within Earth's atmosphere. However, about 0.001% of Earth's people remain potentially magik-capable. The only thing restraining them is that they are still within the atmosphere.
True, a few individuals have managed to leave Earth's atmosphere, but
it would be too much of a coincidence for he or she, not only be one
of the 0.001% magicians, but also accidentally activate his or her powers while in space.... What will happen as the future unfolds and mankind
conquers space?:Dhttp://alternatehistory.com/discussion/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

It would depend a great deal on what the magic is like and how people 'activate' their powers.

It would depend a great deal on what the magic is like and how people 'activate' their powers.

Think traditional ESP (Telekynesis, DM, limited telepathy and a touch of precog) plus catalytic influences in a number of chemical/biological systems. Besidesw that, there is spell-casting, what is actually re-programming an "ambiental machine"
left on Earth millions of years ago. The "machine" is not materia as we know it, but
a structure of force interactions dimensionally anchored on earth's core. The same
aliens that built "magical powers" into a fraction of humanity via genetic engineering built the machine as a kind of "nanny" or safety device to allow them to control the race of magicians. They actually didn't expect that human magicians manged to hack into its controls... Much less that it would be used to de-activate all magician's powers on Earth - just on Earth because of the built-in limitations on the machine, that can only act on Earth.

As for the powers, some examples:
For instance a girl (who lives on a mars colony) who is an unwitting witch could "enhance" her garden, so that her plants would have a 400% better growth than that of her identically skilled and dedicated neighbour. All done unintentionally. Another colonial witch has every boy around courting her. She never suspects she is actually catallytically enhancing their hormonal chemistry, and giving them a few subconscious suggestions to boot.
A martian-born boy has had a few (very samll) semi-precious stones and (very small) collector's items appearing into his locker. he thinks someone has put them there. Even he doesn't suspect he is capable of DM (Dimensional materialization) and has subtracted the itens from paralell worlds...
