Confederacy of New England

Tech- January 1, 1940
Capital- Boston, MA

Early History- Due to Millard Fillmore being elected president in 1856, and his ignorance of slavery issues and push for an Immigration Act, The states of ME, VT, NH, MA, RI, and CT seceded from the US. They were soon followed by NY. In the resulting war from 1859-1863, the New England Army, under one U. S. Grant, successfully defended the Confederacy from the US Army of Washington under Lee. PA, NJ, and OH also seceded. With the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, all hopes the US had of retaking New England were crushed. The Confederacy bought the Maritimes from Britain in 1867. Due to it's good relation with Britain, it was involved on the Anglo-Prussian side in the Second War of Austrian Succession from 1914-1921.

Allies- Commonwealth of Nations, Empire of Germany, Italian Empire

Enemies- USA, Third French Republic, Empire of All Russias

Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

Population - 950,000
Area - OTL Luxembourg and traditionally Luxembourg portion of Belgium
Tech level - March 1944
Capitol - Luxembourg
Government - Constitutional Monarchy headed by the Grand Duke and Prime Minister.

History - Starting in the early 1830s, when Luxembourg successfully retained their Belgian possessions, this small country began to take a more militant posture to defend its independence. The discovery of substantial iron deposits gave the initial spurt to the economy, but Luxembourg decided that they could not rely on natural resources alone, so chose to develop their twin engines of the economy, international banking and arms production. By the outbreak of WWI, Luxembourg was a significant arms broker to the Lowlands nations, Germany, and France. They not only developed their own native talent in arms design, but were avid importers of the best designs and designers of arms from around the world. Luxembourg was forced to take the Entente side of the war by German violation of the neutrality, and was instrumental in stalling the German advance. The interwar period saw a return to the previous good relations that nations of the region had enjoyed, but this was short lived with the rising of the Sturmfront in Germany in the mid 1930s. However, by that time Luxembourg's small but well trained and armed army (essentially an arm of the military-industrial complex that not only defends the nation but tries out the latest weapons developed) had learned much from their interaction with the Reichswehr, and were already implementing a new plan for the defense of the nation, one that emphasized a proactive maneuvor war that combined air and land assets and coordinated artillery. By the time that WWII broke out, the Luxembourgers were ready and part of the vanguard that broke the German advance and threw them back deep into Germany. The war ended with an allied victory in November of the preceeding year.

Kingdom of Transylvanian Wallachia

Population - 18,000,000
Area - OTL Romania and Bessarabia
Tech level - September 1942
Capitol - Bucharest
Government - Dictatorial Monarchy under King Vlad XIIIth of the Dracul-Bathory dynasty

History - In the 1400s, Vlad Tepes had more success regaining his throne, and his line with their intermarried allies, the Bathorys, was able to secure the independence of Wallachia and Transylvania (later united under one crown). The nation survived into the modern day. In 1920, the young king Vlad XIIIth led the people in an overthrow of the Boyars and established his dominance over all matters of governance in Transylvanian Wallachia. The nation has an arms industry somewhat similar to that of OTL Czechoslovakia in skills and sophistication.

Friends - Kingdom of Polish Lithuania
Enemies - Ottoman Empire

Khaganate of Khazaria

Population - 44,000,000
Area - OTL Ukraine, Georgia/Caucuses, and Western portions of Kazakistan and Turkmenistan.
Tech level - July 1940
Capitol - Atil
Government - Limited Monarchy under the Khagan

History - The Khazars of Khazaria fought to balance themselves between the Christian and Islamic nations on its borders, and to retain their own identity. A number of successful generals led Khazar armies to victory in the name of Khagan and YHWH, securing their place in central asia as a power (note, there was no Genghis Khan in this timeline, either). The Khazars have capitalized through the centuries on their central position on the trade routes between Asia and Europe to build their economy. A forced modernization occured around 1900 to bring Khazar industry up to international standards.

Friends - What friends?
Enemies - Our neighbors...

Commonwealth of Australia
Capital Jervis Bay
Population 9.6 million
Tech Level late 1942
Head of Government King George VI, role filled by Governer-General Sir John Monash
History
PoD: 1930, The First London Naval Treaty works out slightly differently. The UK is permitted to retain two more vessels than in OTL.

1931:
-Bushfires deverstate Canberra, Parliment House and the Lodge (PM's residence) are badly damaged. The Parliment is moved back to Melbourne while a new Capital is constructed at Jervis Bay.

(the period of 1931-1937 roughly parrallel OTL)

1937:
-The two Guardian class fast Battleships are laid down, one for the RN the other as the new flagship of the RAN.
-War between Japan and USSR (Jan 1938-April 1939). Three Soviet cruisers and seven destroyers are sunk in Vladivostok by a Carrier based airraid propsed by Admiral Yamamoto. Japanese troops subsiquiently landed and occupied Vladivostok (March-July). Soviet forces launched a counter offensive (April-September), liberate Vladivostok and drive the Japanese a substanial way back into Manchuria. Over the cause of the war both sides suffer heavy losses and a truce is reached in April 1939 with a formal peace six months later.
1939:
-Konigsberg Crisis (more or less OTLs start of WW2): Hitler demands the return of the Polish corridor to Germany. Chamberlin makes desprate attempts to prevent the situation spiriling into war and eventually suceeds. A comprimise is reach whereby Germans forces are allowed to be based in the corridor but the territory technically remains Polish (not that Hitler has any intention of sticking to this deal).
1940:
-Germany attacks Poland (Jan). Due to Polish forces no longer being based in the Polish corridor the Germans suffer more oppisition. Nether the less the German army ultimatly does triumph.
-The German Z plan is wound back, the four H class Battleships are placed on hold and resources redirected to the O class Battle Cruisers.
-The Panzerschiff Lutzow is intercepted and sunk by the cruisers HMS Exeter and HMAS Australia in the Indian Ocean (May).
-Hitler turns his attention west (August). German troops sweep throught Belgium and Holland right into the elite of the Anglo-French armies. Simultaniously a smaller armoured detatchment under Erwin Rommel advances throught the Ardennes and routs the French second line troops there. The Ardennes offensive causes a great deal of chaos but rapidly runs out of steam while supplies are fed into the desprate fight futher north. Ultimatly after months of desprate fighting the French collapse and the BEF is surrounded near the town of Calais before being evacuated (Dec).
1941:
-Japan pressures the Dutch East Indies into accepting Japan's "protection" for the duration of the war (Jan). Despite protests by the Allies and the USA the Japanese continue anyway. Neither Britain or France have suffiecient spare forces to press the issue and the USA has no intention of becoming involved.
-Paris falls to the Germans (Feb).
-German airborne forces land in Britain (April) but are completely defeated, barely 2000 men escape.
-France surrenders (May). All of the modern French vessels (Dunkerque. Strasbourg, Richelieu and the incomplete Jean Bart) had already escaped to Dakar, however the old Battleships Bretange, Lorraine and Courbet as well as the carrier Bearn and a number of Cruisers and Destroyers are surrendered to Germany.
-Battle of Britain (May-August) British victory, Luftwaffe sevearly mauled.
-US starts work on the atom bomb (March).

History: First discovered by whites in 1488 by Bartolomeu Dias, and colonized within the next 14 years for the Portuguese. In 1592, the colonies were florishing from trade with ships sailing to the Far East, when a native revolt began under a cheif called Zimba. This conflict lasted through 1631, when it ended with the white minority agreeing to limited native autonomy.
1652 saw the Dutch colony at the Cape of Good Hope, and by the late 1700's the population of whites had increased from 2000 in 1660, to over 22,000.
In 1806, the British took control of the colonies, and from 1811-1851 the change in treatment of the natives lead to another series of revolts. Between 1852-1877 came some years of relative peace. In 1868 came the discovery of diamonds, and in 1886 came the discovery of gold. Many Europeans immigrated to South Africa with the hopes of getting rich quickly, which lead to the revolt of 1877-78. Throughout the British rule aparthied was in force, but was ended in 1879, after which came a lasting, peaceful period. 1907- The British abdicate rule of South Africa, and a new government was set up under the leadership of Grand Duke Sir Henry Bartle Frere (they were strongly discouraged from adopting the term 'King' or 'Prince').
During the Great War, South Africa committed troops to the conflict, lossing 28,160 in casulties, and more than twice that in permenantly maimed.
Current relations between 'native' and white are quite good, with several Universities and Skilled Trade schools dedicated to education of a 'technical' work force.

Republik of Kalifornya
Population: ~10 million
Territory: the Central Valley of California, and coastal territories adjacent thereto
Capitol: Ross City
Style of government: Bottom-up tiered representative republic
Head of government: Josef Mikhailovich Baranov

Date of technology: May 1943

History: In the early 19th century, there was a strong Russian fur trade in the region of California; this trade received a considerable boost when Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov, imperial chamberlain, married into a local Californio family [in OTL, he fell from a horse and died of those injuries on the journey to obtain the dispensation necessary to marry a Catholic]. In 1820, a pair of Russian trappers discovered gold in the hills near their southernmost outpost; Aleksandr Baranov [still in power, as the Russian-American Company was not nationalized in 1818 as in OTL] seized upon this as a way to prop up the slowly fading trade, quietly inviting in friends and allies, and recruiting the natives (particularly those unfriendly to the Spanish) to assist in extracting this resource far more valuable than otter pelts.

Technically, Kalifornya became a province of Mexico after the War of Independence concluded in 1821; however, with Russians outnumbering the Californios and a decidedly unfriendly native presence, this was an entirely theoretical ownership. In the next several decades, the colonies grew, as those populations oppressed in Russia (such as the Uniates of the Ukraine) found much more fertile land for their continued survival across the ocean. When the Mexican-American War broke out, the Kalifornyans took the opportunity to declare themselves a protectorate of the Russian Empire.

Kalifornya grew swiftly, first from emancipated serfs fleeing debt, and then from Jews and liberals fleeing the Okhrana. Though nominally claiming the entire former Province of Texas, settlement largely occurred within the fertile Central Valley. As the population became more independent and more radical, sentiment trended towards independence from Russia, and in 1879, taking the Congress of Berlin as a sign that the Empire was weakened, the Duma in Ross City declared a Republik of Kalifornya.

Kalifornyan relations with the United States grew strained as more and more Americans moved westward, and a series of border skirmishes eventually led to a treaty confining the Republik to its current borders. The Kalifornyans took no side in the Great War (1913-1919), and have largely remained neutral in Pacific politics since, despite growing tensions between the United States and Japan.

Traditional allies: The Kalifornyans have often had friendly diplomatic exchanges with Germany, and this has not changed despite the declaration of a People's Republic in said nation following their loss in the Great War.

Traditional enemies: While there have never been open hostilities, the United States has often made it quite clear that the policy of Manifest Destiny has little room for a sovereign nation ensconced within American borders.

Empire of the Kongo
Population: 35 million
Tech: April 1941
Territory: Angola, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Capitol: Mbanza
Government: Constitutional Monarchy
Head of State: Manikongo Joao IV
Head of Government: Prime Minister Alvaro Ntimi

History: A failed attempt to seize Pope Boniface VIII ensured that the Papacy would hold temporal power, not merely religious, for centuries thereafter. As a consequence, when the Catholic Manikongo in 1497 appealed to Rome to order the Portuguese slave trade stopped, the papal bull was not only issued but in fact effective. Indeed, a papal declaration againt the exploitation of non-European Catholics led to a vastly impeded colonization of all Africa; while the Reformist nations in England and Austro-Hungary felt no need to acknowledge the Pope's declarations, Catholic nations found that it was much to their advantage to sell natives weaponry in return for the natural wealth they were forbidden from seizing by force.

With the Catholic nations treating the Africans, if not as equals, at least as nations instead of victims, those sub-Saharan nations which adapted quickly flourished. The Empire of the Kongo was chief among these, growing wealthy from the sale of its abundant gold and ivory, and powerful from the guns it purchased with this wealth. This influx of trade gave rise to a powerful middle class, which in the middle of the 18th century finally wielded enough power to force the Manikongo to sign into effect a constitution, establishing a National Assembly which wielded almost all authority in the nation.

As of today, the Empire of the Kongo is among the strongest powers in Africa, viewing Egypt as its only true rival. Its natural wealth is sold in ports on both sides of the Atlantic, and its industry rivals that of some nations in Europe. Still, this wealth is not equally distributed, and there is growing unrest among the workers, demanding that they see some of the wealth which their labors produce.

History
Discovered in 1420 by Vinco de Gama, who described as a Blackish Bay, He sailed up a ways till he found a small River [Rio De Gama] where he replenished his Water. and left. for the next 42 years this would be the extent of Portuguese knowledge.

In 1462 Captian Braganza [Minor cousin] was caught by a storm and blown up the river. There opened up before him a large Lake, [Lake Braganza] Hired to carry a shipment of Colonists to Indonesia, he saw no profit in sailing all that way when this Land was just here for the Taking. He Discharged his Passengers [over their complaints] and returned to Portugal.

. The territory was named Terra da Vera Cruz (Portuguese for "Land of the True Cross"). And within several years had a small but thriving Colony. By 1492 their were several colonies, as the Second lake [Lake Joao] had been reached.

As such there was no Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), a Spanish-Portuguese agreement that modified the Line of Demarcation promulgated in 1493 by Pope Alexander VI. Portugal having no interest in the Americas.

In In April 1500, the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral reached the third of the Lakes, By this time the foothills of the Cameroon highland was reached and the Rain forest had given way to grasslands. When word of this reached the court in Lisbon. An expedition under the command of the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci was sent to Terra da Vera Cruz by the Portuguese government in 1501. In the course of his explorations Vespucci named many Lakes and rivers, including a River which he called Rio de Janeiro. [OTL Hadejia river in Nigeria]

In 1530 the Portuguese king John III initiated a program of systematic Brazilian colonization.

In 1530 the Portuguese king John III initiated a program of systematic Brazilian colonization. and placed Brazil under the rule of a governor-general. by this time most Colonists had taken to using the native name Cameroon to describe the area.

The second governor-general, Thomé de Souza, arrived in Brazil in 1549, organized a central government, with the newly founded city of Salvador,, as his capital, instituted comprehensive administrative and judicial reforms, and established a coastal defense system.

Large numbers of slaves were brought into the region from Songhai to overcome the shortage of laborers. São Paulo, on the third Lake, was founded in 1554.

In 1555 the French founded a colony on the shores of Cameroon. The Portuguese destroyed the French colony in 1560. this was the last Major attemp to upsurp the area.

Philip II of Spain inherited the Portuguese crown in 1580. The period of Spanish rule was marked by frequent aggressions against Brazil by the English and Dutch, the traditional enemies of Spain. A Dutch fleet seized Fort de Gama in 1624, but the city was recaptured by a combined force of Spaniards, Portuguese, and Native african the following year.
Following this the Dutch and English confined their attention to the Americas. The Dutch attacked again in 1630, and an expedition sponsored by the Dutch West India Company captured Pernambuco (now Recife) and Olinda. Most of the territory between Maranhão Island and the lower course of the São Francisco River fell to the Dutch in subsequent operations. Under the able governorship of Count Joan Mauritz van Nassau-Siegen, the Dutch-occupied part of Brazil prospered, and in 1661 Spain ceded Brazil to the Dutch.

With the successful revolt in Portugal against Spanish over lordship in 1640, Cameroon reverted to Portuguese sovereignty and was made a vice royalty. this Year a fort [Fort Lisbon]was constructed at the South end of the Fourth and largest lake [Lake Royal] to protect from attacks by the Songhai. Generally peaceful conditions prevailed between the other Europeans and Portuguese in Africa until 1680. In that year the Portuguese dispatched an expedition east ward to the east bank of the estuary of the Río de Lagone and founded a settlement called Colonia. This move led to a protracted period of strife over ownership of the region, which eventually emerged as the Republic of Guinea in 1728.
Cameroon expansion Northward had been preceded by penetration of large sections of the interior. Jesuit missionaries had begun to operate in the Rio de Lisbon Valley early in the 17th century. Before the middle of the century, parties of Paulistas, the name by which residents of São Paulo were known, had reached the upper course of the Mali River. Because these expeditions were undertaken principally for the purpose of enslaving the Native Africians, the Paulistas encountered vigorous opposition from the Jesuits. Supported by the Crown in their efforts to protect the Native Africians, the Jesuits finally triumphed. Many Paulistas thereupon became prospectors, and a feverish hunt for mineral wealth ensued. In 1693 rich gold deposits were discovered in the region of present-day Niger. The resultant gold rush brought tens of thousands of Portuguese [and other European] colonists to Cameroon. The economic expansion of the vice royalty was further stimulated by the discovery of diamonds in 1721 and, later, by the development of the coffee- and sugar-growing industries. In 1683 The first cattle ranches were established in the Sahel, along Rio de Lisbon

The Portuguese foreign minister and premier Marquês de Pombal instituted many reforms in Cameroon during the reign of Portugal's King Joseph Emanuel. He freed the Native African slaves, encouraged immigration, reduced taxes, eased the royal monopoly in Cameroon foreign commerce, centralized the governmental apparatus, and transferred the seat of government from Salvador to Fort Lisbon in 1763. Pombal expelled the Jesuits in 1760, because their influence among the Native Africans, and growing economic power were resented by many Brazilians. Thro they returned with the Court in 1792.

In 1792 Spain under the influence of the French invaded Portugal
King João VI of Portugal , Emperor of Cameroon (1763] and his heir--Pedro IV of Portugal (Pedro I, Duke of Braganza) (1791] Were forced to flee Lisbon when it fell to the Spanish, He established the Portuguese Royal Court in Fort Lisbon.

Only 1 when forced to leave Portugal Prince Dom Pedro grow up traveling around the country, and learning the Native languages and Customs, much to the dismay of his Conservative royal tenders.

1n 1806 during his Grand Tour, Dom Pedro visited America, there he rode on one of John finches Steam Boats, and fell in Love. When he returned to Cameroon He brought with Him several Engineers, and Boat Builders. Within a year the first Cameroon steam boat was Built. By 1812 there were a dozen.

In 1832 when Dom Pedro became King, He began a program of Investment, and Development, with the Steam Boat having opened up the whole river, New mines were opened in the Highlands, and Cattle ranches **{ Closer to the Australian Stations, ranging from 10 up to 100 Square miles} were expanded in the Sahel

This brought a period of Conflict with the native Tribes, but in the end most of the natives were brought into the system. Especially in the Sahel, where the natives became Cattle hands on the Ranches, While this period was over by the 1880's, like the Australians, Argentines, and Americans, Cameroon has a Cowboy mystic.

The first Railroads were built in the 1870, most heading east and west from the River. But eventually they paralleled it, providing faster, movement, thro there are still hundreds of Steam [Oil Fired] Boats, on the River, even today.

In the 1850's Cameroon shipped Beef to the Crimea and in the 1860's Cameroon shipped Beef to both sides in the American war, this lead to research on Canning and Preserving . By the turn of the Century, Cameroon was a leader in Refrigerated Ships.

During the Great War Cameroon was Neutral in the Central powers favor, Shipping tons of beef north thru Libya, into Italy. After the defeat of the Italian Navy by Britain in 1916. And the imposition of a blockade, most of this stopped. Except there were always some blockade runners. this lead to Cameroon developing very high speed Boats, including some early jet propelled.

In 1909 at the Paris Air show, Cameroon Military Officers were impressed with the latest Aircraft, and brought some back with them. When Samuel Langley. took off from a Ship and then landed beside it, Cameroon took Note. By the mid twenties Cameroon, was the world leader in flying Boats, and Float Planes. With 60% of the population living within 50 miles of the Water, and 70% within 100, the Water plane was the way to go. Today, Cameroon's African Clippers dominate the trans Atlantic market, thro Boeing and Pan Am's China Clipper have a lock on the Pacific.

Victoria is not born a girl, instead is born Alexander Victor. Britain retains its possessions in Hanover, gradually pitting it against Prussian nationalism. A rather short war is fought in the 1880s in which Britain loses Hanover to Prussia, while at the same time stripping France of most of her overseas possessions, including Tunisia, Senegal, and most of the West African coast.

This is not a huge blow to Britain, as Hanover had long been moving away from the British Isles proper, and indeed, the two lands were different in culture and language. France is able to seize Belgium in a fiat accompli. By the 1910s however, the situation on the Continent has spoiled significantly. France and Germany's competition for Continetal supremacy has not been settled, and in 1916, with the death of Franz Josef, and the resulting rebellion in Bosnia, the world is plunged into war after the Austrian invasion of Serbia and the following Russian declaration of war.

Britain sits much of the war out, but as Russian forces begin to collapse and Germany gets the upper hand on France, Britain intervenes, hoping to salvage something of the former Continental situation. Britain's entrance is decisive, and the war ends in 1920.

The peace that follows dissolves the Austrian Empire, and splits Belgium away from France, again. The peace is far more brokered than OTL Versailles, as Britain does not trust any of the combatants, and wishes to attempt to restore the balance of power.

This has led to feelings of hostility in Europe towards Britain, primarily in France. France's anger stems from a feeling of dissatisfaction with the treaty. Germany remains a card whose value has yet to be seen. The treaty was light upon Germany out of Britain's desire to establish some form of balance on the Continent, and the fear of a resurgent Russia, now a fascist dictatorship, may be bringing Germany closer to Britain.....

OCCUPIED TERRITORIES OF THE PROTETCORATE OF ISRAEL

Territory: There are four Occupied Territories: The Suez Canal Zone, North Sinai, West Cyprus and East Cyprus

Capitals: Port Said, Al' Arish, Lemesos, Famagusta

State form: Foreign Military occupation

Population: 710,000
Greeks: 42%
Jewish Settlers: 28%
Turks: 14%
Arbs and Bedouins: 11%
Germans: 3%
Else: 2%

Languages: German (official), Jiddish (among the occupation forces), Greek, Turk, Arab

History
The Great War (1905-1908) put an end to the Ottoman Empire, even though it should linger on for further 16 years afterwards. Financially ruined after having fought on both sides (German and Franco-Russian), and having come up at the wrong side in the end, it was mostly a living corpse.
It was no that Hertzel's ideas had a chance to be realised. The Ottoman Empire had no chance surviving against the flood of jewish immirgants to Paletsine, who also enjoyed extensive German support. In fact, German was made offical langauge (the de fatco main language in everydays life was Jiddish, though), and Emperor Wilhelm II. was made Protector of Israel [naturally, as a secondary PoD, Wilhelm is more sympathetic to the Jews. That German should be made sttae langauge,a nd that the Kaiser should become Protetcor was part fo Hertzel's ideas, though. Two World wars put an end to that].
The Protectorate of Israel was offically founded 1911, but only few governments (chiefly of course the Germna one) regogniced it. The Jews themselves did not care, and spent a decade settling and ordering the land, while all around them the Ottoman Empire crumbled.
The offical end came 1924, even though the Empire had been dead long before. The Sucessor States of Arab nationality soon began to mobilise against Israel, but with German Help (later on, under the rpessure of Jewish loby groups, the USA would also support the Israeli state, but not yet) they were defeated within two years. However, unrest had swapped over to the British Empire: Turks and Greeks were massacring each other on Cyprus, while now also Egypt began to threaten Israel. The UK was inefftive in the first case, and did nothing in the second case, as it wished to se Egypt-Israel as a proxy war. With Germany having won the Great Wor, a sort of Cold War had begun between it and the British Empire.
The Second Israeli war started 1930, when Israeli forces invaded Egypt, taking the North Sinai and the Suez canal. South Sinai came under direct British military administration, but they were not yet ready to get involved in the conflict. It was something else when a German-israelif leet took over Cyprus, but Parliamenta sked themselevs if they were not better off with that troublesome colony being in enemy hands anyways. So, while the UK did nothing, the 1930s were a tense, very tense decade. France rebuilt with British help, and under British protetcion, which allowed them to simply ignore the limitations of the Treaty of Luxembourg, while in the Middle East, pro-German Israel and teh pro-British Arab nations armed up to the teeth.

And then, 1940, came "the event".
(I know that Tech for the Occupied Territories would be higher, but that simply means that they had had a faster development)

FRIENDS: Germany, USA, to a lesser degree the Ottoman Republic
ENEMIES: Arab States, Great Britain, to a lesser degree France

GERMAN EMPIRE
(-in-Exile)

Territory: German East Africa, Njassaland, Zanzibar and Pemba

Capital: Dar-es-Salam

State form:: Constitutional (but by no means democratic) Monarchy, with strong military influence

Population: 15.2 millions, of which 1.4m are European settlers. 1.3m of those are Germans.

Languages: German (official), English, Arab, Kisuaheli, Chicheva, Chinyanja, Chiyao, Chitumbuka, other native Languages (mostly Bantu).

History

Germany was a latecomer as a nation on the Euroepan scene, and often behaved so, at least after Bsiamrck was gone: Loud and agressive. ist colonial programm was similar: All places inA sia were already given away, so German ydreamed of a "German India" in Africa. And indeed, in a strong rivality to the UK, the entirety of Southern Central Africa could be taken in the 1870s, with a bond from Soutwhest Africa to East Africa. Not that this mattered much ater, though. The colonies, while most efficiently lead, still were not economcialyl profitable, and not very well settled.
That would onyl change in the 1890s, due to a private intitive. Sponsoring emmigrations, and at times also forcing them, until 1914, 300,000 Germans emmigrated to East Africa, 50,000 to Southwest Africa, and 50,000 to Central Africa. That also allowed, at least in East Africa, to build up a german infrastructure. Still, the colonies were vulnerable. Germany trusted on the BErlin Treaty of 1875, which said that no Euroepam conflict may be fought on African soil. Having the stronger presence colony-wise, Great
Britain and France, on the other hand, had no intention to do likewise.
Finally, War broke out in 1914. Germany was defeated in Europe, and the Kaiser went to Dutch exile. However, thinsg went different on Africa. Receiving an "order" from Corwn Prince Friderich Wilhelm IV., the commander of the colony, von Lettow-Vorbeck, decided to fight on. And he was very sucessful, even though the UK throw nearly all Boer and Indian troops against him. With the support also of the native location, Lettow-Vorbeck had been able to wage a sort of Guerilla War, that extended also into the neighbouring (and hostile) colonies of Congo, Kenya and Mcoambique. Finally, that led to unrest among the Boer troops, who in 1919 simply packed and went home.

By 1920, Lettow-Vorbeck was back in definitive posession of many improtan lands within the colony. That year, a very enthusiastic Friedich Wilhelm IV. also trie dto topple the Wiemar Republic, but was defeated by worker militias (while teh Reichswehr remained neutral). He fled to Lettow-Vorbeck, who retook Dar-es-Salam in 1921, where the German Empire-in-Exile was proclaimed.

Due to furtehr raids into neighbouring colonies, Lettow-Vobeck forced the European powers to regogncie their state. Great Britain even ceded Zanzibar and Pemba (but they had taken the rest of the German colonies, excpet Cameroon, which became French, so it did not matter greatly to them). The new Imperial Government, with LV as Chancellor could now finalyl start to rebuild the country.

Officially, it was only a provoisorium, until Germany was "reclaimed", but nobody was fooled by this. East Africa now was Fredrich Wilhelm's state, and even he was not delusional enough to not see it. So efforts went into modernising the country, and equipping it with an at least halfways decent ifnrastructrue. Also, under pressure from LV, who had get to known the fighting sprit of the Askari, the black troops who had served him, a new racial policy is introduced. It now was less differed bewteen black and white, but between German and non-German. Conqueetly, a Germanifcation programm was started - the dark side to the laudable efforst in building up an infrastructure.

East Africa obtained part of Mcoambqiue when GB took the Potuqguese Colonies in 1931, however that land was lost 9 years later - in the "Event", as anotehr power "ISOTed" right next to East Africa, and that power would then hold that territory...

ALLIES: Germany
ENEMIES: France, Belgium
All three were thoroughly irrelevant for East Afrcia, though, as they all have cared more for Europe. That ahs allwoed East Africa to make a very pragmatci foreign policy, which can be seen at the example of the UK: At firts being the main enemy, it later became a sort of quiet strategical ally, even though no side would admit it - simply because it was more benevolent that way for both sides. In the end, the English got their Rail from Cape to Cairom running through East Africa as exterritorial territory.

NEW SAKHALIN

Territory: New Sakhalin islands (new Zealand), plus (OTL names): Chatham Islands, kermadec Islands, Niue, Nortehrn Cook Islands, Line Islands, Marshall Islands, Wake Islands, Bismarck Archipel, Tonga Islands.

Capital: Aleksandrville

State Form: Democratic Republic

Population: 7.2 millions

Languages: Russian (official, spoken by 97% of the population), Maori (offical in the Maori Reservations), Polynesian Languages (on the smaller islands)

History
<Note: A very... lessened Butterfly effect is at place here>

Russia first began to open to teh South Pacific in the 1780s. In 1788, the England made Australia a penal colony, and in 1791 the first English whalers operated from New Sakhalin. Russian and French whalers soon followed, and prepared the land for what happened in 1796, when Russia offically laid claim on the islands. In Skrimishes with the Dutch, French and English, the Russians were very well able to defend their claim, and the first batch of penal colonists arrived in 1800.

Efforts in he South Sea were interrupted by the French Revolution, and the rise of Napoleon in Europe. When he was defeated in 1815, Russia feared that British Australia might very well take over New Sakhalin soon, and an intensive colonisation programm was started. Only the south of the Southern Island was still a penal terriory. During that time, the Maori were also pushed back to reservations, and Russia also took over some smaller Oceanian islands, and in 1874 it purchased the Marshall Islands, the Mirconesian Islands and the Marianes from Spain.

In 1905 however, Russia lost to Japan, costing them (old) Sakhalin and the Mirconiesian and Marian Islands. That opened a rift bewteen Russia and its colny that latently already had been there earlier. In short, for the orthodox, arch-conservative Russia, New Sakhalin simply was too liberal. And now the stupdirity of Russian foreign policy, led by arrogance, had also costed New Sakhalin two island groups (the pacific islands were all administered from New Sakhalin). Immidatly in the Aftermath of the war, New Sakhalin revolted. Russia could do nothing, and while it did not regognice NewSakahlinian idnependcy, it was a fact. Most countries did regogncie it anyways.

New Sakhalin wisely decided to sit out the Great War, even though the temptatioon to strike at Russia and Japan was there - but British Australia was simply too near. Instead, it merely used the war to take over the Bismarck Archipel from Germany. The new USSR which raised instead of the old Russia finalyl did regognice New Sakhalin, but New Sakhalin did not regognice the USSR. Instead, it rtied to gaina s many people trying to escape it to New Sakhalin, which, still undersettled, was in need of labour.

New Sakhalins pent the following two decades like this, when it happened - the Event.

Allies: Germany could be named here, due to havin gha dcommon enemies, but i is simply too far away. The U and Australia have had goo relationships t new Sakhalin, but not enough to call them allies.

Enemies: USSR, Japan.

Baltic German: 8%
Other (Mostly Scandinavian): 2%
Colonies:
Karelian: 44%
French Catholic: 36%
French Huguenot: 10%
Spanish Catholic: 5%
Other: 5%

History:
See Mosaic Earth 9 (1790) History for pre-1790.

In 1797, the English colonies of New Albion (in the South), New Baltimore (Chesapeake region), and Boston-New Providence (the North) finished their revolution to form the Federal Empire of America, with the Duke of New Baltimore as head of State. The new state was rapidly expansive, and incursions into Transmississippian Upper Louisiana, a territory of Spain, resulted in the Spanish-American War in 1800. In the first month, America captured St. Louis, the only real city in the territory, and by the end of the year, after all failures to get it back, Spain was forced to sell the whole land to the FEA.
Karelia cut off port rights to the FEA that same year in New Orleans. This precipitated the Orleans Crisis, when war seemed inevitable, but eventually Karelia conceded the right to use New Orleans as a port to the FEA. Tensions remained, however war never came to pass.
The 1800s were a decade of a balanced power. Karelia remained supreme in the Baltic, while Denmark-Sweden (including Pomerania, most of Prussia proper and Samogitia) absorbed Norway, effectively making the Baltic a two-power arena, with only a few small city states (such as Koenigsberg) adding to the mix. However, what would end this peace was in 1902: the Second Kalmar Union spontaneously inherited the throne of Germany. Both France and Karelia, long adversaries, wanted to stop this, while England, an ally of Kalmar and fearful of a growing French power since the King of France inherited Scotland in the 1700s, wanted to stop it.
The sides thus were: France, Scotland, Karelia, Spain vs. England, Germany, Second Kalmar Union. The war lasted ten long years of trenches and hell. When revolutionaries finally overwhelmed Copenhagen in 1912, there was little opposition left to prevent the Socialist Republic of Denmark from forming, though the monarchy ruled from Gothenburg thereafter. However, if anti-communism was a weak force, pacifism became a strong one. In 1915, after years of planning, the first Global Union meeting was held in the Karelian city of Riga. As a tribute to it's openness, even ostracized Denmark was allowed to join, and since 1915, war never erupted.
However, the lack of war does not mean a lack of preparedness. Governments funded Arms advancement, even as they claimed they wanted peace. By the 1940s, Karelia's world is one where all sides are ready for war, with only a few diplomats in Riga making a difference.
Imagine what would happen if Riga, and let's throw in all of Karelia, were to spontaneously dissapear...

Federal Arab Republic
Capital:
Cairo
Major Cities: Cairo, Tripoli, Beirut, Damascus
Head of State: President Mustafa al-Nahhas Pasha
Population: 51 million
86% Muslim Arab
12% Christian Arab
1% Other

History:
The Federal Arab Republic has it's bases in the First World War, when the Ottoman Empire, an ally of the Central Powers, won the war but lost land. The British had provoked an Arab Revolt in 1918, which, though not supported by the Hashemites in Jordan, Palestine, and Hejaz, was eagerly supported in Syria, and after the war, Egypt and Libya (returned to the Ottomans) joined as well, overthrowing local monarchs and governors.
Since then, the FAR has focused on gaining the Hashemite lands and Iraq from the Ottomans, but have constantly failed. The establishment of the German supported Duchy of Judea has resulted in mass Arab anger, and close relations with Britain, though they are a bit wary of Britain's ally, the Third French Empire.

MAJOR LEADERS:
President Walter McDonald, age 59,Populist, from Iowa
Vice-President David Jones, age 40, Populist, from Indiana
Speaker of the House William Roberts, age 66, Populist, from Illinois

HISTORY:
1763: At the end of the French & Indian War, France is allowed to keep Canada and the lands drained by the Ohio River, in exchange for Guadeloupe and Martinique.

1783: Great Britain grants the United States independence.

1789: Louis XVI agrees to the terms of the Third Estate, and France reforms peacefully.

1797-9: The infant nation declares war on France, and an army of militia invades Louisiana. While the first several years of war go well, the American army is halted by a French army led by General Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Kaskaskia. The peace treaty results in the United States only gaining the OTL state of Ohio.

1800-1830: Americans continue to emigrate to the fertile regions of northern Louisiana drained by the waters of the Ohio River. The French governors encourage this immigration, as it brings with it more revenue.

1812-3: The United States are humiliated in a brief war with Great Britain, and pay a small indemnity.

1819: The United States are defeated in war again, this time by the Spanish in their attempt to conquer Florida and the region of the OTL Alabama and Mississippi.

1840: The French and Portuguese crowns are united when Louis XVIII marries the only daughter of the Portuguese king.

1830-1850: As more and more people continue to emigrate to northern Louisiana, the French government tries to slow what is quickly becoming a flood of settlers, many of whom would like to see Louisiana become part of the USA. They increase taxes and attempt to prohibit immigration, fruitlessly.

1850-2: When the US Senate passes a law banning slavery, the southern states of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia secede. After the North prevails over the rebellious Southerners, harsh measures are taken to subdue the Southern states, leading to a horrible and cruel guerilla war which lasts in strength until 1870, and still flares up now and then up to the ISOT.

1851: Led by the adventurous George Fremont, the people of Upper Louisiana revolt from France. After several quick victories, the Federated States of America is formed, with its capital at Vincennes, and is immediately recognized by most of the European powers. Its independence is only recognized by France in 1860. Fremont becomes the first president of the FSA on April 1, 1853.

1855: While Great Britain is fighting a war with France, the FSA occupy all of the Oregon Territory. Great Britain is not happy about this, but waits for a later revenge of this supposed betrayal.

1859: Fremont’s presidency is marked by another triumph when the President himself leads an army to take the OTL territory of the Mexican Cession (minus California, independent as of 1852) from Mexico by force.

1867: The FSA buys Alaska from Russia. When it becomes a state in 1912, it is named Fremont.

1870-1910: The FSA grows and becomes a Great Power, economically and militarily, with a relatively modest but still powerful fleet. The nation comes close to blows French, still present in lower Louisiana and as the real power behind Maximilian I and II’s power in Mexico, as well as Great Britain several times, but no war is fought.

1916-9: After a British battleship blows up in mysterious circumstances in Bremerton, Great Britain and France and her puppet, Mexico, all declare war on the FSA. The nation fights valiantly, defending her borders on all fronts except that along the United States in Ohio, but incompetent generals and a horrific naval disaster combine to force the FSA to accept the victorious Empires’ terms. Fremont and North Columbia are lost to the UK, New Mexico to Mexico. A massive indemnity is imposed as well.

1920-ISOT: After a period of financial ruin lasting until the end of the 1920s, the first Populist president since the defeat in the Great American War, Walter McDonald, comes to power, promising a better economic plan and more importantly, revenge against the nation’s enemies. The economy booms under McDonald’s planned economy, especially making new weapons for the war which is certain to come, which McDonald plans to launch in 1945. It is January 1, 1940 when the Event occurs...

*** I claimed OTL Hungary in the claim thread, but since then wanted to spice it up a little - enjoy! ***

(Nazi) Hungary

People: 9,300,000+3,500,000=12,800,000

Consists of Hungary, Upper Hungary (Slovakia)

Date of tech: February 1943

Capital: Budapest

President: Ferenc Szálasi

History:

Hungary was created as an independent nation after the collapse of Austria-Hungary during the Great War. The first government of the republic soon lost support, and the communists came to power and proclaimed a Soviet Republic. They promised that Hungary will regain all the lands that it had lost with the help of the Soviet Army, as well as bring equality and social justice. (In this TL) the Soviet Army actually arrived, and brought terror, pogroms and collectivization. The newly assembled White Hungarian forces, together with the popular uprisings and the skilled command of the White generals, were able to defeat the Soviet occupation and beat the Romanian Army to a standoff.

The result was that in January 1920 the Hungarian government restored Hungarian monarchy and started electing regents. The post-civil war strong conservative government provided peace, stability and security in its diminished borders. The Global Depression further changed the political mood of the country to the right. In 1932 Hungary began closer cooperation with Germany and started signing trade agreements. In 1935 the most important fascist party – the Iron Cross, was formed, which would later be headed by Ferenc Szálasi. At the same time, the current prime minister started changing Hungary’s foreign relations away from Germany and Italy and closer to Britain and France. This resulted in a loss of jobs in the country as German investments fled out and western ones were not fast enough to replace them. At the same time, right-wingers and even most of the center became fascinated with Germany’s successes and expansion (1938).

In late 1938 everything was turned around as the Iron Cross party won a landslide victory (with some German help of course). It began to copy German practices, conducting the usual Nazi persecutions and restructuring, and soon became their closest supplier of raw material. On March 15, 1939 Hitler invaded the remainder of Czechia and allowed Hungary to invade Slovakia in turn. The two countries went into a close alliance and cooperation. At the outbreak of WW2 Hungary was allotted the task of distracting the Polish Carpathian army. Under German observation, the two deployed armies performed brilliantly and the Carpathian army was encircled and destroyed. Seeing Hungary’s potential, it began receiving scores of German observers and NCO under Hitler’s orders. It commenced to further expand its army and set up several munitions, aircraft and tank factories producing a variety of Hungarian armor, as well as the copied Panzer 3 and 4. By the date of the event, it was so entrenched in the German camp, that it is said that Budapest receives orders directly from Berlin.

Allies: Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy
