HISTORY:
Britain embarked on a very different route to empire as the House of Tudor stayed allied to Spain’s Habsburg line. Queen Mary gave birth to a son, Henry IX, in 1555. Britain remained Catholic and over the next century grew closer and closer to Spain. Portugal was absorbed by Spain in the 1590s with British support. The Spanish Netherlands were annexed by France in 1605, securing Angouleme and later Bourbon power on the Continent. With no Dutch trading empire, Britain filled the role instead. The South Pacific was split between Spain and Britain; France dominated in India. In the Far East, Nobunaga allied himself with the British and secured power. His backing of Jesuit missionaries continued, and by 1650, when Japan became a British colony, some 45 % of Japanese were Catholic.

Japan gained independence in 1830 as industrialization created a vocal and independent middle class who lobbied for an independent Japanese Empire. The split was amicable for the most part, and Japan remained a staunch ally of Britain against a growing Franco-Chinese alliance. As Spain’s power waned throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Britain absorbed most of her overseas colonies; Japan inherited most of these (including the New Hebrides – OTL Philippines) in the 1850s and 1860s.

In 2004, the Empire of Japan was a constitutional monarchy closely allied with Britain and the Republics of Mexico and Virginia against the repressive Franco-Chinese Continental Alliance. The New Hebrides was one of Japan’s richest provinces, with a significant agricultural base, strong defense and computer industries, and one of the highest standards of living in the Empire.

HISTORY:
The history of Yamania began with the migration of members of the Yamana tribe of Tierra del Fuego who managed to follow the whales and seals that formed most of their livelihood south to the Yamana Peninsula (OTL's Antarctic Peninsula). Able to walk barefoot and with only a loincloth in the frigid temperatures of Tierra del Fuego, this branch of the Yamanas needed only to add further articles of clothing to their everyday outfits to survive in the harsh climate and create a society that survived on the rich resources of fish, whales and seals of the peninsula and it's surrounding islands.

The death knell for their people began with the discovery of the Smith Islands (OTL's South Shetland Islands) by British mariner William Smith in 1819 and his return voyage the next year that discovered the Yamana Peninsula itself. In 1830, the British backed the chief of one of the more populous groups of the peninsula in becoming the sole sovereign of the Yamana Peninsula, the Smith Islands and the Bransfield Archipelago (OTL's Palmer Archipelago), forming the Kingdom of Yamania that was largely a British puppet.

The early 19th century saw the gradual dying out of the native Yamanians with the arrival of Europeans and their diseases even as Yamania soon eclipsed Hawaii as a major whaling center with the city of Antarctica in the Smith Islands becoming the major port of call for whaling vessels. The death of the final full blooded Yamanians in the 1890s found Yamania becoming a Crown Colony of the British Empire and the world wars saw Antarctica become a base for Allied ships patrolling the South Atlantic. The early half of the 20th century also saw the first limited exploitation of the coal and mineral deposits of the rest of the Yamanian continent.

In 1970 the independent Republic of Yamania, with it's capital at Antarctica, was formed that soon joined the British Commonwealth and United Nations. Despite the colonial ambitions of other countries, Yamania's territory includes the entirety of the Yamanian continent. The country's economy depends mainly on fishing and it's ever expanding mining industry though scientific research and tourism also play a role. Though it encompasses an entire continent, Yamania has one of the smallest resident populations in the world that's concentrated mostly in the Yamana Peninsula and it's surrounding islands. It's military is only a small National Guard that is used mostly to hunt for outlaw whalers, the job of national defense depending mostly on the United Kingdom and Australia.

The world is becoming a very demilitarised place however one of the largest commonwealth navy bases exists in Nova Scotia and there is a air force base in New England.

HISTORY:
In 1857 the first reorganisation of North America took place with some of the current borders becoming established with Indiana, New England, Virginia and Canada (including Northern Columbia) becoming separate dominions.

In 1899 during one of the many European wars that took place in the 19th century Quebec was taken however in 1899 the Great war broke out against France, Spain and Russia. It is estimated that ¼ of the worlds population died during the war.

After the war even the victors were in ruins. In 1924 from the ashes of the British Empire the Commonwealth was founded.
By 2004 the commonwealth is well on the way to becoming a world government with only the Central European Federation and a couple of minor nations not being part of it.

Did the Great War involve nuclear weapons? It would almost have to, to kill a quarter of the world's population and leave everything in ruins. A nuclear war of that magnitude in 1899 would require an Industrial Revolution in the Seventeenth Century...when is the PoD?

1/4 of the world's population wasn't killed in battle, there were lots of diseases as a result of it and all that. Sort of like what happened after WW1 only worse. The Russians also took quite a facist turn in asia and killed a lot of people.
The 1/4 is just a estimate as like in our world exact numbers weren't really available in many parts of the world.
The first nuke was used at the end of the war though.

TECHNOLOGY: New Hebrides has a technology level roughly equivalent to OTL's present-day USA. In a few areas, such as structural engineering, power sources & their attendent technologies, and automated manufacturing, the nation is aprroximately 10-20 years ahead.

New Hebrides uses fusion plants to provide power to about 60% of the nation; compact nuclear and hydroelectric plants provide the rest. Most major naval vessels have fusion plants; there are also two experimental jet fighters equipped with small fusion power sources attached to the 32nd Fighter Group.

New Hebridean structural engineering is better than ours; they have 'earthquake-proofing' methods which are much more reliable than anything we have; this has allowed the construction of massive monorail systems linking all but the tiniest islands in the chain, and the building of four large artificial islands in the Sulu Sea.

There are few private ground vehicles in the New Hebrides; most people use the highly effecient public transportation system instead. Boats are a different matter. Nearly every family or individual has some type of water craft, from small speedboats all the way up to 100-foot yachts. The approaches to the capital, New Dover, are always thick with water traffic.

The Kingdom of Hawaii is from a Hawaii in where the Kingdom of Hawaii recieved economic compensation from the takeover in 1834. This led to monarchy becoming more aware of the added gift to self-sovereignty, thereby providing the increasement of the Royal Guard. By the Attempted Takeover in 1898, the Guard had become a seperate entity in it's own right, enabling the defeat of conspirators (such as Stanford Dole). Of course such handling of American civilians lead to the talks with the US government with the end result of Hawaii becoming a "protectorate" of the US but still having it's own unique system of government. (Queen Lil'o'kalani kept her power as "monarch" but a representative position was created in order to preserve the ties with the US)

When Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7th, 1941, much of the government had evolved on the tracks of a commonwealth system with an increased US federal presence. This evolution was soon canceled with the military declaring a state of emergency with the elected government suspened. However, the monarchy was kept due to the risk involving the Royal Guard, which by this time had also evolved along the lines of the National Guard. By the end of WW2, much of the power that had been assigned to the monarchy had been reduced down to the level that of what a govenor might have.

Today the Kingdom of Hawaii works under a hybrid government system in which the native royalty is preserved even though much of the legislative power is handled by the Senate and House of Representatives. The current monarch, King Kuhio IV, is more of a "common man" than his predecessors and have lead to a revival of Hawaiian culture as well as educational system. However, there is much controversy surrounding several key members of the City Council under investigation of bribery and graft. Both the FBI as well as the Royal Guard (in function as a law enforcement agency) are pursuing the matter further.

The modern history of the Kingdom of Madagascar begins with the union of the Merina peoples of the interior by King Andrianampoinimerina in the late 18th century, who later also subjugates the Bétsiléo. He was succeeded by his son Radama I, otherwise known as Radama the Great, who ended the slave trade in return for British aid in modernizing and equipping his army which helped him conquer the Betsimisáraka kingdom and founded the Kingdom of Madagascar with it's capital at Antananarivo. The Protestant London Missionary Society was welcomed and gained many converts, opened schools and helped to transcribe the Merina language, beginning the spread of Merina culture across Madagascar. When Radama died in 1835, he was succeeded by his son Radama II who continued his father's policies despite the obvious disapproval of his mother Ranavalona. The Kingdom continued to expand until it encompassed the entire island by 1865. Madagascar's agriculture diversified dramatically as cash crops such as coffee, cocoa and various spices were introduced and mines were opened that produced coal, bauxite, garnets and other minerals. The ports of Tamatave (Toamasina) and Majunga (Mahajanga) were expanded and railroads were built between them and Antananarivo which soon became Madagascar's leading industrial city.

After Radama II died in 1868, Madagascar saw a period of fighting against the colonial ambitions of the French in the late 19th century which was only thwarted by a British-sponsored general European agreement that preserved Madagascar's independence. During World War 1 Madagascar remained neutral and during the 1920s, the Kingdom continued a pro-Britain and America foreign policy. Under Radama V, however, Madagascar began a rapid military expansion during the 30s and occupied and annexed the Comoros islands in the Mozambique Channel in 1938. When World War 2 broke out and France collapsed into the puppet Vichy regime, Madagascar found a way to expand their territory at the hated French's expense while assisting their long time ally, Great Britain. In late 1940, the Kingdom of Madagascar declared war on Germany, Italy and Vichy France and 'occupied' the French territories of Reunion, the Glorioso Islands, Juan de Nova Island, Europa Island, Bassas da India and Tromelin Island, gaining control of the Mozambique Channel and the waters surrounding Madagascar. After the war, Madagascar began to pay for it's aggressive policies before and during the war as relations with Britain and the United States cooled while relations with France were downright venomous. Taking some notes from the Soviet Union, Madagascar created the MIS, or Malagasy Intelligence Service, and poured funds that otherwise have gone into offensive measures for the military into the new agency. The MIS proved remarkably capable as the 20th century wore on and the Madagascar intelligence network spanned the African continent and into Europe, Asia and the Americas. MIS covert operations are unofficially considered largely responsible for independence movements in African colonies across the Sub-Saharan region and is consulted on occasions by the CIA, Interpol and the KGB for intelligence data.

Today the Kingdom of Madagascar is non-aligned in the Cold War between the American-led NATO and the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact but isn't lumped automatically in with such nations as India. Madagascar and its surrounding empire of islands is a source of great mystery to diplomats and intelligence operatives around the world. Madagascar's military and economy, while strong and prosperous enough, are nothing compared to the two known superpowers, the United States and Soviet Union, or even some of their minor allies. But the MIS's intelligence network is one to be feared and it's indirect control over most of the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa make it a possible third player in the Cold War though Madagascar has made no threatening moves for over 60 years. Shrouded in mystery and secrecy, the Kingdom of Madagascar continues its long history of plotting and intrigue to benefit only Madagascar.

HISTORY:

Scholars today have posed the question on the possibility of this island being the only remaining colony of the UK in South America. Of course this idea has been posed as "idiotic" due to the success that the Falkland Islands have had for the past 20 years due to the upsurgence of tourism in the UK's dominions. The most popular site of attraction of tourism is the Port Stanley Memorial Park where the "Red Fist" seperatist faction from Northern Argentina attempted a surgical strike in order to ward off continuing UK aid to the Argentinian and Chilean government. Sadly this ended with a high civilian casulty rate as well as the elimination of the members of the Red Faction group.

The Falkland Islands is part of the "Southern Circle" of nations under UK jurisdiction due to the historical intervention during the Independence Wars in the early 19th century. This intervention has lead to both Argentina as well as Chile adopting the Jacobian type government whereas a Parlimentary type government was established on the federal level with a state house of rep/senators established on the provincial level. In 1960 this type of government had brought much success to both Argentina and Chile that both helped to establish the Southern Circle Federation, including countries such as the breakaway provience of Urguary, Paraguay, and Southern Peru. But due to the heavy anti-Western seperatist movement funded by the Brazilian junta, the headquarters of the SCF was moved to the Falkland Islands, which by this time, showed a movement to becoming a 'Dominion" in the United Kingdoms, and was considering to join the SCF as an independent entity.

The "Red Fist" Invasion stopped this trend in 1962, with British forces sent to properly put down a 'seperatist takeover of sovereign UK territory'. This retaliation strike soon lead to the euphoria of success leading to the revival of the British economy. Both the SCF and the Falkland Islands benefited by this success with an enforced military presence near the Brazilian border and the 'built up' of Port Stanley as the basis of a joint SCF/UK operations in economy and military. By 1968 the junta in Brazil had been overthrown by internal conflicts and properly accepted in the SCF.

The Falkland Islands is now a self-soveriegn dominion in the United Kingdoms as well as a member of the SCF. Port Stanley has benefited from this dual role with the city expanding twice fold it's size in pre-1950's. This success has also managed to 'shift' the economy of the Falkland Islands to a more tourism role, easing the transportation from the SCF members to the Antartic "Territories". Recently there has been a movement in the Falkland Parliment to fully nationalize it's transportation companies as well as renaming itself from the Falkland Islands to the Marianas, in recognition of the Argentinian aid that has been shown so far.

-> Much of the Dominon of Chile-Argentina are heavily militarized due to a history of fighting seperatists to the north. This has resulted in much of it's military based on the "air-cavarly" idea from Vietnam in addition to more heavy artillery based pieces.
-> Although the Dominion of the Falklands is a different nation than the Dominion of Chile-Argentina, it is on good terms and functions more or less as a 'little brother' to it's neighbor.

Military: San Diego was the Home Base of the CSN Pacific Fleet. As such four Aircraft carrier groups, one Battleship group, and two heavy Cruiser groups, and 38 Submersible's. twenty nine of these were short range Coastal craft, the other Nine were long range ocean Ships. There were other Ships and Planes but they were left behind. Also ISOTed was the Naval Base with the Air Station [with Planes] & the Marine Base [with state of the art Heavy and Lite weapons]. This TL never developed Jets, so the aircraft are , Carbon/Titanium with State of the Art unducted fan propellers. Most of the Shore Based interceptors are Electric. Due to Helium being a by product of the Cold Fusion Desaltation process. The CSN also had six Rigid Airships used for Coastal Patrols. [think Coast Guard here]. but 2 of them were out of range of the ISOTing force.

Military: Tijuana was the Imperial's Northern military Base, But with Several others at various cities south to Honduras. The Naval part wasn't as big as the CSN next door. It had a Small Army Base of 125 thousand Men, and a Naval base with 2 Aircraft Carriers Groups, and 4 Heavy Cruiser Groups, along with various smaller ships, and Twenty Submersible's, only five of them Ocean Class.
Industry: Heavy Industry, Electric Tools & Dies with the area along the Diego strip being Mexico's Silicon Strip. There is Extensive Farming in the Baja's with marijuana [never outlawed] Plant ions being the big Money maker. [Think Virginia Tobacco here]

History: In sept 1862, Lee's Forces were on the way to capture the Union Garrison and Armory at Harpers Ferry. On sept 12th General Meade received a "lost Order" detailing Lee's plans. Due to this Meade split his force sending 12,000 men under Generals Franklin . & ??? up the Middletown Valley to cross over South Mountain at Crampton & Cumberland Gaps . General Stuart surveyed the passes and sent a extra brigades to reinforce , along with a Calvary troop, On the morning of the 14th General Franklin with 8000 soldiers attacked the 1200 defenders, by late afternoon he broke thru splitting the Confederate forces and forcing Lee to fall back on the Anteim Creek,

ITTL when Richerson sees the number of Union forces he sends a messenger asking for additional reinforcements, Longstreet wheels his army in position while Franklin is regrouping. When Franklin sends his troops forward again the lead units as lead by a green Captain, the Units commander, Major Rutherford B Hayes, having been killed earlier. As such Franklin's forces enter the Trap. Longstreet's Artillery opens up, routing the Union Forces. Sending Stuart's & Hampton's Calvary to pursuit, Longstreet again wheels, this time thru the Middletown valley. On the morning of the 15th Meade finds his army trapped between Lee's and Longstreet's. The ensuing Battle of Sharpsburg is the Bloodiest day of battle in the History of the Country. By the evening with thousands of his troops killed, Meade asks for terms, and on the morning of the 16th sept 1862 at Sharpsburg Courthouse, General Meade surrenders the Army of the Potomac. Of course this wasn't the end of Fighting, But Politically it was the End of the War. In the 1862 Elections, the Peace Candidates took over the House, and the war ended in early 1863. Also in 1863 Emperor Maximilian's forces captured the rebel Jaunito Daiz and his main ringleaders, taking the steam out of the Mexican Rebellion.

In 1865 the States of California, Washington, & Oregon left the Union forming the Pacific Republic. In 1905 British Columbia decided against joining The Dominion of Canada, instead choosing to stay with their Pacific Friends. Then again in 1912 during the Great War, The Czar needing Money for the war, Sold Alaska to the Neutral Republic.

Following the Civil War and the Mexican Rebellion, There were hard feelings between the Countries. but time and Economic Forces lead to a drawing together. The Confederates started a slow process of emancipation in 1872. Mexico & the Pacific Republic joined the US, & the CS, in the race to Industrialize, With Labor/Capital strife replacing Land Reform/Labor, as the problem of the Time.

When Japan anexxed Hawaii in 1892, and the Philippines in 1895, all four Countries joined in Protest. In 1911 when the Great War Started all Four Countries declared Neutrality, and then all four joined together in entering in 1913. Then in 1916 after the War they all Joined to form along with Canada the NAFTZ [ North America Free Trade Zone] .

Technology: Alumiun Smelting was developed in the late 1880's, and by the mid 1890's several new alloys were produced. One of these Nickumiun, was as strong as steel but only 1/3 the weight. this allowed the production of very powerful light weight small Steam Engines. The first Dirigible was Flown in France in 1899, with a Paris/London flight only two years later. By the time of the Great War in 1911, there were several Airship Companies offering passenger service in Europe and North America. By the end of the Great War in 1915 Both sides were producing Fiberglass/Aluimuin Skinned airships. In 1916 the first TransAtlantic Passenger service started, and the race was on to find new and better materials.

In 1924 Nicklaus Tesla Exploring a problem with very high voltage Radio Transmissions, developed a practical & safe means of broadcasting power. The first Sets were huge with hundreds of very large tubes. but over time the size began dropping. with the invention of the Transformer in the 1940's, the Mini-circuit in the 50's, & the micro circuit Board in the 70's, the receiver size dropped small enough to fit into Passenger Cars. thro it is still to big to fit into Household appliances.

In 1959 Bell Laboratory's announced the discovery of A Cold Fusion Energy System, a by product of Superconductor research, Cold Fusion works best at very low temperatures, and very large Containers, Over the last several decades new Materials for Superconductors have allowed the reduction in size such that large Vessels like Aircraft Carriers, BB's, down to the newest Destroyers, are equipped, with them.

As the size of the powers receivers precluded Private ownership a Extensive system of Public transport, from electric freight, & Mag-Lev Passenger Trains, down to Electric Trollies, & Buses Developed. As such there never was a need for Interstates Hiways.

Due to the earlier invention of the Transformer the Computer industry is about 15 Years ahead of OTL, with more attention paid to Voice interfacing, and AI Systems.

Simple History:
By 1450, the Fall of the Constantinople-based empire seemed certain. Hoping to gain some of the cities treasures, Genoa offered to sell Corsica to the Empire, hoping that after the Empire's inevitable fall, it would simply regain the island and gain some money in the process. It came as a complete surprise, when, after realizing that the Empire's fate in the East was ended, Constantine XI sailed from Constantinople to Corsica. Genoa was enraged, and tryed to retake the island in the battle that has been since known as the "Great Miracle", as the tiny Byzantine forces which had came along with Constantine defeated the Genoans.

The island was at first worried that Constantine would attempt to convert it's denizens to the Greek Orthodox, but Constantine reminded the people that he had declared the churches one, and that he beleived no conversion would be necessary. Even though many refugees from Constantinople came to the island, the Empire became more Corsican, and less Byzantine. However, it still remembered it's days of power, and yearned for them. It's chance might have came in 1700, when a bankrupt Italy ceded Sardinia to the Empire, but when it attempted to threaten more conquests, Europe quickly attacked it. 1709 saw the end of the Palaeologans, as the popular Angelans (no relation to the earlier dynasty) gained the throne.
In the modern age, the Corsicans are mostly relegated to a secondary condition, though they did regain Constantinople in The Great War (1969-1975), their attempt to gain power by joining the allies in The Second Great War (1980-1983) resulted in the British occupation of Sardinia, and were forced to cede Constantinople back to the Islamic Empire. In 1990 the last of the Angelans died, however the aged Constantine Palio, the first Emperor whose blood was mostly Corsican in origin, was appointed Emperor by Andronicus X. Unfortunately, he began to exhibit signs of a mental breakdown in 1995, and his Regent and son John has taken over the duties of the Empire.

Military technology in this world is around the levels of OTL, but other technologies (For instance, this world has never been to space, has no microwave ovens, no nonstick pans, little household electrification, etc. etc.) lag far behind.

Military Forces: Army: 90,000 long-service troops, with another 150,000 reservists, plus 100,000 old-style reservists (from the days of universal conscription 8 years ago). Armored/mechanized divisions make up 1/5 of total strengh. Air force: 700 fighters, 216 medium bombers, plus two wings of long-range bombers (1970s technology). Navy: Four battleships with attendant cruisers and destroyers, nine carriers (each with complement of aircraft aside from air force total--6 in peacetime drydock), and 25 submarines.

History: After Charles the Bold's victory over the Bernese in 1478, they swore allegiance to him and helped him obtain the incomparable Swiss infantry with which he defeated the French, and later provided an overland link to the Languedoc rebels who his heirs helped gain their independence from France. The center of gravity of the Kingdom of Burgundy, as it came to be called, shifted north to the Low Countries, however, as the Reformation brought both Huguenot refugees and war to Burgundy (as well as the counterintuitive Navarrese alliance). During the Thirty Years' War, the Royal Dukedom was overrun, but Burgundy kept up the fight from Antwerp and, when the Habsburgs had been halted, King Charles IV moved his capital there.
The traditional alliance with England frayed during the 1600s, and Burgundy lost its first colony in North America, where ironically the English would establish their own Carolina, but maintained hold of the Mississippi and St. Lawrence rivers, discovered by French Huguenots for the Burgundian crown, as well as the large southern island known as Janszoon's Land after its discoverer, Willem Janszoon. The Burgundian colony there thrived as the continued troubles in France brought immigrants to the more serene Kingdom, and by 1700, 100 years after its founding, Janszoon's Land consisted of a prosperous string of settlements along the southeastern corner and the small island to the south of that.
England, of course, found and claimed the southwestern corner without realizing it was the same island. When this was discovered, in 1745, England and Burgundy were once more drifting into opposite alliances, as England was beginning to side with the rising star of Prussia against Habsburg Austria, which Burgundy had become bound to by dynastic marriage. Neither side, however, was able to conquer the other, though in the wars that followed the St. Lawrence River fell to England.
Thus did Janszoon's Land come to be a largely French-speaking colony of Burgundy, and even as the mother country had its own troubles, with two major languages and extensive continental commitments, the colony became accustomed to acting on its own. In 1814, when Burgundy had been overrun by the Revolutionary armies and its seat of government was itself in New Dijon, in the Caribbean, the Janszooners demanded and gained the right to name their own Stadtholder, achieving de facto independence. (It is around this time that they changed the name of their colony to Australie).
When in the 1930s Japan invaded English and Burgundian colonies to the north, on the mainland and in the northern islands, it was Australie, and the English counterpart New South Wales, that held the brunt of the attack, but in 1941 the Empire of Mexico entered the war, and its fleet combined with the Burgundian East Asia Fleet to defeat the Japanese. Australie remained in the forefront after the war, as China, heavily developed by Japan during the occupation of the 1910s-30s, fell under the sway of semi-fascist rulers who sought to gain economic and political domination of southeast Asia. Although they were able to throw the Burgundians off of mainland Asia, the Chinese found themselves forestalled by the triple alliance of English New South Wales and Johore, Burgundian Australie and the Phillipines, and Mexican Hawaii. After nearly forty years of military buildup, the rearmament of Japan under Burgundian/Mexican auspices brought on a new war, this fought mainly in Korea. In two installments fought three years apart, the Pacific Allies defeated the Chinese, establishing a joint protectorate over Korea in 1996. The Chinese government fell to internal turmoil two years later, bringing further economic competition but political peace to the region.

Then, eight years afterward, the inhabitants of Australie (well, most of it) awoke to an emergency broadcast by Stadtholder Duvalier: "My fellow Australiens," the politician began in his trademark French accent, "Something extraordinary has occurred."

Before the Event, Australie had a population of 21 million, most of which was protestant and French. Its main political disagreements were with the Van Diemen's Land French Catholic separatists and on the issue of how to handle Dutch/French bilingual administration. More serious matters included the ever-popular question of whether to cut the defense budget or drastically raise it.

Now, the Dutch-speaking population has grown to some 20% of the population in the transported area, and Van Diemen's Land has seceded rather involuntarily. As for defense, that remains to be seen.

New Zeeland is another Burgundian colony, largely Dutch and a friendly rival. Many New Zeelanders were in Australie at the time of the Event as tourists, students, or workers, and vice versa.

History: By the time Lee routed Hooker again at Gettysburg, the timeline had already undergone a few shifts (and the timeline's not really about that). America extended to 54'40 and into Sonora and both Britain and Mexico were nursing grudges. The defeat at Gettysburg, however, was counterbalanced by a Mexican victory at Galveston, and the Union held out against the British invasion long enough to force the Confederacy to make peace with Mexico. It was Hood's texans, fresh from having their heads handed to them by the Mexicans, who provided the numbers to outflank Grant at the last battle outside Baltimore, but nothing really ended in 1864. The Americans in Oregon refused to live under British control, as per the peace settlement, and carried on a guerilla struggle that ended only with the intervention of California in 1870.
California had its Spanish population, but they had no interest in returning to Mexican rule. Nor did they wish to be the object of Confederate march-to-the-sea imperialism. The Yankees of farther north agreed on both counts, adding that they didn't particularly care to return to the protection of the Union, seeing as how when you belonged to someone 3000 miles away you got jerked around in their wars, whether it was land or water in the way. So the Republic of California was born, and thrived, enough to take the Oregon Territory under its protection.
Well, a Confederacy built on the right to secede isn't going to hold together long. The states on the other side of the Mississippi saw their interests lying elsewhere from their Eastern countrymen, so one day they rose and walked out of Richmond, and established their own Congress in Houston. Thus was born the Second Republic of Texas.
The Confederacy discovered some of the tricks that Union mine-owners knew about keeping workers under control, and started 'emancipating' its slaves. The Union was just getting used to being smaller, and the industrial balance was the way it'd always been, so the Union and Confederacy slipped back into alliance, against England, as it happened. The only people who didn't like this were the New Englanders, who disliked war and were in the way of any English/American fighting that would happen. Plus, they traded with England and had been for 200 years. Nevertheless, the American states got themselves into the European alliance system (secretly), and when war broke out in Europe in 1898 Quebec rose in Canada with the support of the USA (except for New England, which revolted). The revolts spread, and soon you started seeing wierd things like the Atlantic Customs Union and the Quebec Canal (Quebec learned, like the Confederacy, that political sovereignty's of little use without the economic perquisites you had before).
California kept on expanding. In the south, Mexico and Texas were right up to its borders; in the center, Deseret wasn't interested in joining but was interested in trading; in the north, the Plains indians were putting up a hard (and, thanks to Californian guns, eventually victorious) fight against the USA. This system of buffer states kept it pretty safe, but from the West there was always Japan, which had come to own most of the Pacific during the European War of 1898-1903.
There were a lot of Chinese in California, and in the frontier spirit they were largely welcomed, though most had started building the railroads that linked California with the Plains Free State, Deseret, the USA, and Texas. They were a powerful swing vote, as it were. And things were getting ugly in China, with regard to the Japanese. More to the point, Japan was allied with Russia, and Russia owned Alaska, where there was a lot California wanted. And Britain had been on good terms with California for a while. Of course, a Californian ship blew up in Manila, but really California entered the First World War in 1938 for extremely pragmatic reasons.
No one told them Texas and Mexico had a secret understanding to partition southeastern California, or that the CSA was in on it. Never mind that the Canadas, the USA, and the Atlantic Customs Union were on England's side--California still had a hell of a 2-front war on its hands. They won it, of course, thanks mainly to the Germans switching sides and conquering half European Russia. After a blow like that, you don't really defend that part of your empire that's on a third continent, so California was able to walk into Alaska and call it quits, then send most of its troops south to stave off the assault on San Diego. In the pacific, they won through a similar lucky fluke--the Californian fleet, low on oil, captured the Japanese oil convoy in the Solomons, then raced to the waters where the Japanese fleet, impatient for its fuel, had already attacked the outnumbered British. The war of revenge in the Phillipines and in China lasted four more years, but no one had the stomach to keep going once China was free, and someone told the Japanese it wasn't 1600 anymore and they could stop fighting. So in 1946 California was at peace, if exhausted.
Now, being marched over a lot changes a country, and the south began to be more and more militaristic and hard-line. This made sense, as Texas and Mexico hadn't been permanently weakened, but nevertheless the securer northern region, more prosperous as well, began to get annoyed. The conflict began to form on ethnic lines as well, as the south was mainly Spanish while the north and center white, and the center Chinese. There was still the alliance with China to keep up, and when China fell to the Maoist revolutionaries that caused another ethnic divide--pragmatically, Japan was a better alliance.
The situation stewed for a few years, while a new problem began to grow: USA and Canadian encroaching on the Plains Free State. That was a northern issue, and one that Quebec and the Atlantic Union wouldn't help them with, and that a war with Texas certainly wouldn't help them with. This time, the spark of world war would light in the Americas and travel to Europe, where once more Germany was making a bid to free itself, and eastern Europe, from Russian domination (and to replace Russia with itself, its enemies said). Luckily, the southern intriguing had gotten something done--Mexico was neutral. Eventually, that proved decisive, as it entered the war on the Californian side two years in, in 1956, routing the Texans. The Plains Free State, however, was plowed over several times by trenches and bombs, and most of its inhabitants fled to California as refugees, a fourth issue-sparking ethnicity. By 1960, once more everyone was exhausted and at peace. Texas had been diminished, but was secretly rearming. Nuclear energy had been discovered toward the end of the war, but not yet formed into bombs, but it seemed Texas was working toward it--that's what the southerners said. World opinion, however, didn't go for it.
There was no next war, but California began working on its own bomb. With no alliance truly secure, everyone had to rearm, and the continent entered a multifaceted arms race which quickly spread to the world.
In 1984, the Californian Army, largely officered from the South, took over the government after a widely-alleged corrupt election. It didn't relinquish power, instead harshly suppressing dissent. This was impossible to do across much of the north, but the state nonetheless grew dramatically. Along with it, however, grew a wide network of corruption so vast that political opposition flourished. Political dissidents routinely suffered little or nothing as their backers paid the local authorities. This form of low-level revolt was well-suited to the frontier nature of most of the north. After the first few rebellions failed, people stopped trying. Those who had libertarian sympathies fled to the CSA, the Atlantic Union, or Europe.
In 2004, the mayor of Seattle, administrative center of the north, was Adam Wu, a prominent opponent to the regime but elected with corruption money in late 2003. He'd managed to seed the bureaucracy with many of his followers, and was waiting for the right moment to launch a takeover of San Fransisco in cooperation with other conspirators. It seems he waited too long. Without the guiding hand of the south, or the entrepreneurs of the far north, North Central California will have lost most of its political raison d'etre.

History: In 1897 Norway attempted to secede from Sweden, Sweden went to war to prevent it, but Norway appealed for and got British help, winning independence in 1899.
Follow this defeat a Militarist party took power in Sweden, and like Germany, started a military buildup. in 1905 it entered into German Alliance.

In 1914 with the start of the Great War, Sweden declared war on Norway, GB, & Russia. Norway fell the first year, and Finland in late 1915. With the help of Sweden, Germany forced Russia to the peace table in 1916, Removing Russia from the war, [Treaty of Brest-Litovsk] and ceding Finland & the Kola Peninsula to Sweden. In 1917 Germany defeated France, and Britain was forced to the peace table.

During the twenties & thirties the rise of Fascist Russia [Fire-Ice/Snow Bear] lead to the Second Great War [1942-46], Bringing Norway & Finland back into the Swedish Nation. This was followed by the Cold War between the Mittle-Europe/Anglo-American alliance on one side , and the fascist Russian-Chinese Alliance on the Other.

Military: Sweden as part of the Mittle-Europe, Maintains a large Force in the East Sweden, Consisting of 500,000 Soldiers, A Large Air Force, and Naval Forces. Except that Most of these are sperate Designs, To Maximize the Winter Condition fighting abilities. and there is no sperate Naval Air.

The territory now known as the Dominion of Australia was ceded to the Kingdom of Britannia in 1635 at the Third Congress of Reme. The congress was convened by Pope Mary V in an attempt to defuse the tensions that had arisen between the Western European Reman successor states over the colonisation of the new world.

Over the next 200 years the various chartered colonies of Australia were along with Arcadia in North Oceania the destination of 90% of Britannia’s migrant population. During the Arcadian Rebellion of the 1820’s Australia remained loyal to the Britannic Crown despite strong public sympathy for the ideals of the rebels. Both these factors were addressed in 1840 when the individual colonies were united as a federal, self governing dominion within the Britannic Empire.

During the 19th century Australia’s political and economic growth were rapid and by 1900 it was the second richest country of the Empire surpassed only by Britannia itself. When the new, federal Britannic Union began to replace the old empire during the 1920’s Australia was among the charter members along with Britannia, the Republic of Arcadia, Nova Scotia, Oregon and Britannic East Africa. As a member of the Union Australian forces fought in both World Wars showing particular courage during the unsuccessful defence of Reme during the Central European Pact’s invasion of the Kingdom of Italia.

Since the end of the Second World War in 1966 and the beginning of the cold war with the Euro-Asiatic Alliance Australia, like the majority of the world’s democracies, has been a member of the Oceanic League.

History: The Iberian peninsula was finally united in late 1521 by Miguel, who was the son of Manuel the first of Portugal and Isabella, the eldest daughter of Ferdinand and Isabel of Spain. Migeul would reign until 1568. During this time he would gradually start Spain on its path to conquer Italy. Several wars with both France and his Austrian cousin Charles left Manuel ruler of Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Milan, and "Lord Protector" of the Papal States. Add to this his marriage with a Medici, and Spanish power in Italy was unquestioned. Miguel can also be partially blamed for the break up of the the Catholic church. After Spanish troops fought off rebeling Protestant mercenaries (the Austrians hired them and failed to pay) from sacking Rome, the Pope quickly became nothing but a Spainsh puppet. This led to the Hapsburg conversion to Lutheranism in the late 1500's.

Spanish colonization and conquests: Mexico, Central America, Columbia, Venzueala, Peru, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Phillipines, Taiwan, Hainan, Some pacific islands, and several parts of east and west Africa.

Spanish decline began in the late 1700s, as its over sea empire was either consumed by the British, French, Hapsburgs(the low countries stay under the Hapsburgs and the Austrians lose Hungary to the Ottomans and so remain focused on untiting Germany), and later Japan or broke away to make their own way. By the time of the Second Great War (1922-1930) the Dual Monarchy had been reduced to Spain, Italy, and North Africa. After loosing the war the victorious "Alliance" decreed that Spain and Italy were to be parted and the their remaining coloinis be made trust territories of the United Kingdom. The monarchy was abolished and a republic replaced it. Only three years later a vicious civil war would sweep the penisula. The new governemtn promised that every region would be free and so the Federated Soveriegn Republics of Spain was formed. The Republics are Portugal, Leon, Castile, Navarre, Aragon, and Andalusia.

Technology: In most ways resembling late OTL 1980's though biological and chemical warfare technologies are more advanced as well as a greater understanding for treating diseases and viruses.

History:

After the German victory during the War of Expansion brought German control to the oil rich area of the former USSR. All nationalists were quickly crushed, brutally, by the Germans. The oil was vital to the Germans; German soldiers and settlers flooded in; throwing locals out of their houses on their ears. The inhabitants with nonessential jobs (essential to occupation) were used as forced labor to build mansion/castles for the new German masters. The natives, how had at first welcomed them, soon armed themselves against their new overlords.

Planned German colonization was to have the Caucasus cleared of locals by 1970, both a lack of settlers and a lack of funds meant that the date was pushed back 50 years to 2020. By 2000 only a 10% German ration had been achieved. The areas economy is largely slave labor based; with sweatshops produced goods the leading export. The countries lifeline with Germany is essential to the German populace’s survival. Per capita for a German settler is $4,000, were as the local makes around $100 a year if the Germans decide to pay.

HISTORY:
This timeline diverged from ours due to the survival of two men who died in OTL. The first was an English pirate named Andrew Malone, who in OTL died stillborn. He served as a sort of 'privateer general' for Spain, decimating British shipping and trade in the Caribbean and mid-Atlantic in the early 1700s, precipitating an economic crisis in Britain, and war between Britain and Spain. The second man was William, Duke of Gloucester, who lived past his death in OTL at age 11, and grew up a fierce proponent of British naval power and expansion. He, along with the Duke of Marlborough, was responsible for inciting Queen Anne to declare war on Spain.

The war ended in defeat for Britain in 1711; Spain, thanks to Malone's efforts, had built up an uncontestable power base in the Caribbean, and when France came into the war on Spain's side, it spelled doom for Britain. Malone was created Duke of Hispaniola by King Phillip V; he ruled the island until his death in 1752. With virtually no piracy and uncontested Spanish power in the region, Malone was given unprecedented slack; he abolished slavery on 'his' island (1735), instituted a fair and impartial legal system (1741), and abolished the Spanish peonage system (1746). Many people were unhappy with Malone's reforms, but no one could argue the fact that Hispaniola enjoyed a higher standard of living than Spain herself.

All Spanish possessions in the Caribbean were eventually united as the Viceroyalty of Hispaniola in 1778, administered from the city of San Domingo. The islands received their independence in 1804, with, ironically, British aid. The citizens briefly considered joining the British Dominion of Virginia, but ultimately decided on the formation of their own nation. Adrew Malone's grandson became King Carlos I in 1805. Throughout the 19th century, Hispaniola remained close to Britain; when the last Stuart monarch, James IV, died without an heir in 1892 and civil war engulfed the British Empire, Hispaniola supported the House of Rochester. It turned out to be a wise move as the Rochesters eventually won control of Virginia, forming a kingdom stretching from Florida to Baffin Island and west to the Mississppi. Hispaniola supported Virginia once more in the TransAtlantic War of 1929-1937. Throughout the rest of the 20th century, Britain's empire continued to crumble as colony after colony broke away, leaving Britain herself impoverished and bitter. Technology: Most technology is ten to twenty years of OTL.

Divergence: This world diverged from OTL around the begining of the 8th century. The Ummayad Caliphate is more imperialistic than OTL. A good POD would be Tours in 732.

History: Iceland was discovered in the late 9th century by Norse explorers and settled by Celtic immigrants fleeing the capture of the British Isles by Ummayad Muslim forces. In a series of wars that freed Ireland and Scotland from Muslim rule and into Norse hands in the 11th century, Iceland played a pivotal role in raids on the British coast.

In the 11th century, Iceland faded in popularity due to the colonization of Vinland (OTL Quebec, Ontario, New England) by the Norse, but it remained a Norse military base until the modern day. The chief military base is at Keflavik, which holds the largest airfield in the Norse Kingdom. Much of the Norse naval strength is stationed in Keflavik, as well, such as the Norse aircraft carrier King Olaf Tyrgvason, named for the 11th century king mainly responsible for the settlement of Vinland, the continued settlement of Iceland, and the Norse revival.

Iceland's main claim to fame took place during the Great Naval War (1899-1902) between the alliance of the Norse Kingdom, the Holy Roman Empire, and Byzantium against the Muslim alliance of al-Andalus, al-Firanja, and the Ghana Empire. Muslim forces staged a surprise air raid on Keflavik, which ended with the destruction of several Norse battleships, but the raid was largely a failure due to the massive Norse military presence there.

Today, Iceland has a small independance movement pressuring the government at Oslo, but most Icelandic Norse are content under the rule of the Norse Kingdom.

History: In 1715 following the Jacobite Uprising, the New Hanover King took steps the insure that it wouldn't happen again. A series of Laws, commonly refereed to as "The Scottish Removal Acts" Lead to wholesale deportations to the Americas, a Uprising in Ireland 1732 lead to the Acts being applied in Ireland as Well. TTL had no Bonnie Prince in 1745, in Fact By 1750 there were less than a Half Million people left in Scotland or Ireland. There were however a extra 4 Million people in British North America. The American Part of the War of Austrian Secession latest only three years 1756-59, and ended in British control of Quebec, and Cuba. A Series of "Intorable Acts" Lead to American Independence in 1776. This was followed by "The Articles of Confederation" in 1777 and a Constitutional Convention in 1788. Unable to Agree on several issues, the delegates reconvened in two Conventions [Boston & Charleston] Splitting into the United States [OTL Constitution, except Blacks are Whole People], & the Federated States [ A Hamilton-Adams Constitution]. 1789-1805- Europe went close to OTL.

In 1801 The FSA signed a treaty with Malta For Basing Rites in fighting the Berber Pirates. Over the next four years the FS in Alliance with the US Attacked and Built a series of Forts along the North Africa Coast. In 1806 a Combined FS/US Fleet was in Harbor when a French/Spanish Fleet mistaking them for British Attacked. Over the period 1806-1812 [ fall of Napoleon], FS/US Ships & Troops fought along side the British. At the Congress of London in 1813 the US/FS received Title to all Spanish & French Territory's in North America [except Mexico]. History
The Long War (OTL Civil War) descendened into a guerilla war which seemed endless. The war became increasingly unpopular in the North, and the South lay in ruins. Finally, President Wellington declared the South independent, but warned that the ruined country "May never rejoin the republic it lost". The South fell into the hands of Major-General Northe, who, realizing the devastation to the south's governmental infrastructure, made the bold move of ending state government, and making himself dictator. Riots ensued, as "State's Rights" were still popular, but the Major-General, with the help of the remaining army, was able to keep his rule. He then embarked on a plan of revitilizing the nation's agriculture, and incresing it's industrial might. These plans finally came to fruition in 1918, as war escalated, and the Southern Republic was able to quash attempts by Mexico to grab the former Texas, and Mexico later collapsed. The S.R. and the U.S. both seized territory from this, and Mexico lost it's independence.
As for the slaves, they all escaped or were freed. However, the SR still had a large amount of black people, who the populace despised, and many blamed "Negro Sabotoge" for the damage done to the South in the war. The South decided on a massive relocation plan: It's army conquered the weak Haiti, which had encompassed all of Hispanola, and deported the blacks there, forming the SR-Dominion of New Africa.
The country has remained highly militant into the modern age, and any calls for demilitarization are crushed by the army. The Corvaly Administration is a puppet for one General Hill, and Corvaly himself is a weak-willed ruler, who's main good point is his charisma. Hill resides in his Mexican Villa, preferring it to the city life of Charleston. (Though it will get him trapped outside of the "Zone")

Some SME Historians since the Event, have Sepulated that it was the same [or close relation] disease that affected Hesperia in the 500's. Whatever or Where ever it came from it swept around the world. In parts of Africa , South America, and Parts of Asia, the Death toll was over 85%, in Europe it reached over 60% in the poorer Dirtiest Slums. World wide the toll was estimated later as 55-60% of the World's Population . Even 175 years later this is still a world in Recovery. In Kirghiz’s world, the Black Plague struck more than a century and a half early and was much more devastating. China, the Middle East, and Europe lay in ruins; only Japan, the British Isles, southern India, and Scandinavia remained relatively unscathed. The steppe nomads of central Asia survived intact mostly due to the vast distances and cold climates of their home. A warlord named Jingiz Khan united the Mongol tribes in 1215, just in time to sweep down on plague-ravaged China. His grandsons invaded the depopulated Middle East and Europe near the end of the 13th century, and by 1350 the Great Khaganate ruled from the Sea of China to the Bay of Biscay.

The Great Khaganate began to stagnate and fragment in the 1700s as regional powers like the Britannic Empire, Andalus, and Vijayanagara began to grow. A great civil war in 1744 saw the end of Jingiz’s empire; in its place were six lesser Khaganates, of which Kirghiz was one of the more prosperous and stable. Throughout the last half of the 18th century and into the 19th, four more great plagues swept Eurasia, spreading death and anarchy in their wake. The Britannic Empire reigned uncontested in Europe and North Hesperia (the two continents of the New World were discovered in 1685); Andalus controlled the Iberian peninsula, most of west and central Africa, and South Hesperia. The Italian peninsula, the Balkans, and much of Africa were a collection of petty states.

In 1905 a fanatical, racist Hindu group transformed the Kingdom of Vijayanagara into a theocratic dictatorship. By 1950 they were in control of the whole Indian subcontinent, most of southeast Asia, and the island continent of Afiri (Australia). For the last half century, the central Asian Khaganates have been engaged in a cold war with Vijayanagara, constantly dueling over Tibet, southern China, and other border regions, while the rest of the world watches.

The Khaganate of Kirghiz is a monarchy whose royal family can trace their lineage directly back to Jingiz Khan. The nation is fairly enlightened by our standards, though military service is mandatory, and most forms of media are controlled by the state. Vital industries, such as oil and electricity production, are nationalized. In its own world, Kirghiz controlled the vast oilfields of the Caucasus, a region which is now lost to them, and will shortly paralyze their military…

TECHNOLOGY:
Kirghiz’s technology level is roughly a century behind ours due to the devastating waves of plagues of its home TL. Electricity is still a novelty, only having been invented some 50 years before; steam power is widespread, up to and including massive steam-driven ‘landships’ used by the army on the vast plains of central Asia. Airships and early-generation airplanes are also in use.

There were four major religions in Kirghiz’s TL: Buddhism (common in the Khaganates and most of Europe and the Middle East); Islam (Andalus and its colonies, and certain small enclaves in the Arabian peninsula and eastern Africa); Hinduism (Vijayanagara and its possessions); and an almost unrecognizable form of Christianity (the Britannic Empire).

History: In spring of 1939, the World Health Organization, in Geneva, began receiving reports of strange deaths in the Belgium Congo. People were dieing of Illnesses, they normally would have shrugged off. By late Summer there were reports from all across central Africa, as well as the first reports coming from Belgium. In late fall, the WHO realized it had some kind of world wide Epidemic, with reports from India, Indonesia, and South America. Of Course the World had other thing on it's mind , as Hitler's Storm Troopers Invaded Poland, and the World mobilized for war.

In Spring 1940 as Hitler prepared to strike north at Denmark and Norway, The WHO Released the Reports of deaths in Europe & North America, of Infants & toddlers dieing, of things like the Common Cold, and of whole towns & villages being wiped out in Africa, South America, and Asia. Suddenly the War, became the back story. By Summer all thoughts of War, except War against the Plague. were forgotten. That Fall the plague got a name SISS, [System Immunity Suppression Syndrome]. This world had no Manhattan Project, No space Race. And no GW2. All Mankind's efforts Went into Medical research. Fortunally, areas that had been hardest hit by the Black Death of the 1300's seemed to be most immune to this new plague. By the late Fifties, A vaccine was finally developed. But it was to late for areas like the Congo, were the population was to be numbered in the Hundreds.

For many years, the Dominion of Chile-Argentina was subject to an on-going rebellion by various insurrectionists aiming for the expulsion of all non-Hispanic peoples within Argentina. Sadly, from 1960 to 1983, the level of violence soon increased due to heavy US support to these groups in order to destablize the DCA's power within South America. This soon resulted in the Red Faction Invasion and key assassinations of governmental officials in 1983. That action quickly spurred the DCA to formally declare war on the insurrectionists, quickly pulverizing any rebel stronghold that they encountered. Two years passed with the insurrectionists soon encased within the city of Cordoba, subject to constant artillery and aerial bombardment by the DCA military. In early 1985 the action stopped with the introduction of the 'Buster Bomb'- the first explosive to carry biological viruses specifically designed for humans.

As a result of that action, all insurrectionist activity within Northern Argentina ended. In the following years from '85 to '00, the DCA soon focused their attention on their northern border, quickly ending the Brazilian Civil War, and ushering a new era of peace within that era. In the present date, North Argentina is currently experiencing a new wave of immigrants from Brazil and other countries seeking a new life. As for those sites that were privy to the intense fighting of the Red Faction War, they have been decreed as a "national monument", and are currently staffed by Park Rangers.

The Outer Territories (for a lack of a better term) consists of all Southern Brazil and much of the outer coasts. The reason why this came to be is partly from the USA's fault, whom deemed it necessary to install a pro-American regieme within South America that would deter the political and military power that the SCF had [read: DCA]. This support quickly lead to the destabilization of that country, thereby causing a massive civil war that caused the DCA to get involved. In 2004, the Outer Territories are being moved towards self-governance and incorporation within the DCA. However, there has been a constant threat of guerillas within the northern boundaries that agitate for a more...independent stance rather than part of the DCA. This movement has been met with brutal force by the DCA troops (due to the usage of the 'Red Faction' symbol) and is currently being dealt with by the UN in order to broker peace between the two groups.

History:
This Italy comes from the Fire Eagle/Snow Bear timeline. Italy was neutral during the First Great War(1914-1917) but joined the Franco-Russian alliance in the Second Great War(1940-1946) in their fight against the Central Powers in late 1940. But by the early months of 1941 they were out of the war after the debacles of Gorizia and Venice. The peace treaty with the Central Powers was pretty lenient(no territorial losses and minor monetary concessions due to the military situation of the Central Powers in other fronts.

The years after this defeat were times of violence and instability caused by the fall of the Socialist government that ruled the nation for over 30 years and many different groups tried to fill that vacuum, sometimes resorting to violence. This period of near civil war was resolved by the King Victor Emmanuel's decision to name the former Minister of the Interior during the War Cabinet,Benito Mussolini, as the new Prime Minister in 1944. The new Prime Minister's emergency powers eliminated all opposition parties except for his recently created Fascism Party and in the inmediate years after the end of the Second Great War began to lean closer to the Nafobor regime in Russia.

The Italian nation of the year 2004 is a minor ally of the Russian Nafobor regime and as such is a torn in the side of the German Empire and their allies.
The Fascist Party(created in 1942) is the only officially recognized political party. This Italian Kingdom consist of OTL 1917 Italian borders, Albania, Eritrea, Lybia and the Izmir region in Asia Minor.(Only Italy except for Sardinia transported by the Event.) This nation is very dependent of Lybian oil for revenue and for military purposes.

Technology:Same as OTL. Italy is well stocked with chemical and bio weapons but no nukes. Italian arsenal is 80% old Russian equipment and 20% newer italian designs.

Military Forces: Celtica by the magic of the ASBs has technology similar to the modern day. The people have a warrior tradition by their religion. Nuclear weapons were never developed.
History:

Britannia was invaded and (eventually) conquered by Julius Caser in 19BL however its people never fully accepted Roman rule with minor rebellions starting all of the time. The Romans blamed many of their problems on the Druids and launched a massive campaign virtually wiping them out.
This was a big mistake, the druids were not military leaders and had not successfully coordinated resistance against the Romans, in 18YL however Liroacrix started his preaching of a new way and began coordinated resistance against the Romans.
By his death in 39YL the Celts had united under his new religion and pushed the Romans not just out of Britain but Gaul as well and were starting to push well into Iberia (which is where Liroacrix was killed in battle).
Liroacrix’s death was sudden however and he left it undefined as to who should follow him as leader and the Celtic people broke apart once more. All of Liroacrix’s work was not in vain however, they shared a common religion- he had left no loose ends in his teaching of the new way of the Earth and where once the Celt’s had been divided into many hundreds of tribes they were now in half a dozen kingdoms.
The Romans failed to take advantage of the chaos that follow Liroacrix’s death and the Celts were able to hold onto Gaul- in Iberia the Romanised locals rose up and declared themselves a independent nation still bitter about the failure of Rome to defend them. The Basque’s on the north of the peninsula also managed to peacefully go their own way however remaining close links to the Celts.
The Celts could not withstand the influx of the tribes from the east however and by 950YL the only Way following nations left on the continent were Brittany and the Basque Country, eventually however the Way spread east once more both peacefully and by crusade.
In 1057YL the Americas (don’t know what they would be called) were discovered by Celtica (Britain) and the way was amongst the many things spread to the new world.

The problem, O Manly One, isn't that people aren't claiming territories, it's that they're not providing timelines for them. It's very easy for people to say "hey this sounds like fun can I have NA12, EU17 and OC5" then they stick it their new toys back in the box and forget about them. I have to admit I'm as guilty as some of the others, I put my towel on EU8 and AS15 thinking they'd provide good TL potential, but I didn't have an idea what to do with them then and I still don't.

This is all a bit weird if you ask me, FME filled up like that with TL's and that was with a smaller membership.

History:

The Soviet Union defeated Japan in the Second Russo-Japanese War(1939-1940) and annexed Manchuria plus Korea. The Japanese was so desperate they signed a peace treaty with China in early 1940 and withdrew their forces from China in an attempt to bolster their defense of Korea but to no avail. By early August 1940 the war was in effect but not in name over. The Japanese army was decimated and the cliques in it eliminated. But the Japanese Navy came out of the war as the great winners. They destroyed the Soviet Pacific Fleet and the SNLF conquered the northern part of Karafuto by early 1940. On the other hand the Soviets rule supreme over the former Japanese vassals of Manchuria and Korea but with no means of attempting an invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. With the German invasion coming on schedule in June 22 1941 the Soviets decided to scale down hostilities in the Far East. Peace treaty never signed. No war on the Pacific. USA entered the European war on May 29 1942. Soviets annexed Outer Mongolia in 1946. Soviet Union didn't fell like in OTL.

The Soviets areas ISOTED from TTL 2004 are in turmoil. The Soviet Union is dying but is going down fighting. Separatists movements in both the Manchurian and Mongolian SSR are being brutally suppressed by the MVD forces and guerrilla forces roam the country sides as well as in other parts of the Soviet Union and even a terrorist nuclear weapon destroyed the city of Omsk(2002). The Japanese ISOTED area is full of land and offshore gas and oil fields necessary to both the civilians and military sectors of the Empire. The Japanese Empire is a economic power house in Asia and their military is very well trained but with very limited combat experience.

Technology: in military terms same as OTL in Soviet areas. a little ahead in Japanese areas. (caseless ammo rifles, laser aimed AA batteries, stealth technology for naval ships and fighters planes is common) in civilian terms 5-10 years behind in Soviet areas(due to longer time of Soviet rule), same as our TL in Japanese areas.

History:
Jeguk has been a world power for many years, but it's status as the world-spanning empire only came after the Axis Wars. The civilizations of Europe fell to dictators in 1943, and America tried a barrage of newly-created nuclear bombs to stop them, with devastating results. The Americans had no time to test thier bombs, and so many failed, hit the wrong target, exploded on launch... when it was all over, America had inadverdantly ruined Europe. To help Asia escape this fate, the Jeguk took over the lands of China, Japan, and India, who had either weak rulers, or had lost thier European Imperialist rulers when the bombs exploded.

Of course, the Jeguk is not perfect. For milennia, the Emperors have divided The Peninsulas population into classes, but recently, this distinction has been applied to the world, and the lowest class made into what are basically slaves. The United States, the second most powerful nation in the world but still very weak compared to Jeguk, has demanded that this action be stopped.

Today, the Jeguk rules across Asia, Africa, and South America. Europe still cannot regain it's footing, and though the United States is actually larger than OTL, it has become very weak, thanks to a massive demilitarization after the disastorous Axis War. Pyongyang is basically the world capital...

History: In this ATL it was England not Portugal that was able to become the main colonizer of this region. What started as Guyana was expanded into and past the Amazon river.
As England moved further into the continent they found gold. This gold was able to fund scientists and inventors in England so that in this ATL the industrial revolution came much faster. In the final years as a Brittish Colony Amazonia was used as a feuling station for Darwin's ship the HMS Beagle. In 1845 Darwin donated a large amount of money into the creation of (Queen Anne's College, later Queen Anne's Univeristy and even later the Charles Darwin Scientific Institute where it is one of the biggest and most well recived institutions of scientific learning in the intire world.)
In 1872 A man by the name of Thomas Phillips who studied as an ecologist before entering the political field was inspired not only, by the people of United States and Canada as well as Jesus Christ and Buddah decided that it would be best for the people of Amazonia if they were a free independent nation. He began spreading his beliefs around and soon nearly the whole nation was behind him.
In 1878 with the Anglo-Amazonia Aliance or AAA. Amazonia become one of the only nations to achive it's independence in non-violent means. It wasn't until twentyyears after Phillips death in 1936, almost a century almost a hundred years after Darwin first stopped on his way to the Galapagos islands, the people of Amazonia chabged the capital city of Georgetown to Thomasville in honor of the father of the their country.
As a member of the Brittish Commonwealth Amazonia has sided with England in WWI and WWII and any many other militaristic conflicts. Amazonia has also kept the US in check with the number of gold medals it recives in the Olympics. They also do the same for Australia in the commonwealth games.
Politicly speaking Amazonia has always been on the liberal side of things. (Imagine a stereotypical Canada gone south for the winter) They have always been realy open to forigners in need. this can be seen by the supprizingly large numbers of Easter European Jews in some of the larger cities

History: In 732 tours was less of a defeat for the muslims which meant that the christians were less emboldened. Without being able to show suceeses the christain leaders focused on pogroms aginsst jews and heretical sects. The expulsions contributed to the growth and tolerance of western north africa. In 1492 Colombus and amerigo vespuccie are hounded out of spain so they head for andalus which commisions them. The americas are discovered and various mayan chiefs are converted to islam and used to expand the influence of islam. The population of Maiyya becomes 50% mixed native/european/arab/black,15% european,15% black and 20% pure native. Maiyya expands to include all of north america south of the sonora deserts. By the 20th century Maiyya becomes mostly democratic and more secular with casinos and drinking being mostly acceptable. slavery is still acceptable but not used as often. The otherm ajor nations are the commonwealth of Transcouigan in western north america and the FCA in eastern north america along with the Anglo-dutch federation. Technology is just like OTL but with one exception, lasers were devloped earleir in the 1920's and nuclear wepons/power not developed until the late 70's.

Going out on a limb here, as this is not yet officially approved. This country comes a universe about ten years out from Ulatis Windodengwijâs, which diverged 100 years ago from the universe containing the Rîgion Litawijâs. This means that the Litawian troops in Noracon are from a different Rîgion Litawijâs than the one I am using in EU 6. The two will likely fall into an instant alliance, but coordinating the different technologies may prove difficult.

History: In 1715 following the Jacobite Uprising, the New Hanover King took steps the insure that it wouldn't happen again. A series of Laws, commonly refereed to as "The Scottish Removal Acts" Lead to wholesale deportations to the Americas, a Uprising in Ireland 1732 lead to the Acts being applied in Ireland as Well. TTL had no Bonnie Prince in 1745, in Fact By 1750 there were less than a Half Million people left in Scotland or Ireland. There were however a extra 4 Million people in British North America. The American Part of the War of Austrian Secession latest only three years 1756-59, and ended in British control of Quebec, and Cuba. A Series of "Intolerable Acts" Lead to American Independence in 1776. This was followed by "The Articles of Confederation" in 1777 and a Constitutional Convention in 1788. Unable to Agree on several issues, the delegates reconvened in two Conventions [Boston & Charleston] Splitting into the United States [OTL Constitution, except Blacks are Whole People], & the Federated States [ A Hamilton-Adams Constitution]. 1789-1805- Europe went close to OTL.

In 1801 The FSA signed a treaty with Malta For Basing Rites in fighting the Berber Pirates. Over the next four years the FS in Alliance with the US Attacked and Built a series of Forts along the North Africa Coast. In 1806 a Combined FS/US Fleet was in Harbor when a French/Spanish Fleet mistaking them for British Attacked. Over the period 1806-1812 [ fall of Napoleon], FS/US Ships & Troops fought along side the British. At the Congress of London in 1813 the US/FS received Title to all Spanish & French Territory's in North America [except Mexico]. In return the Americans Gave the North African Forts, to the King of Spain & the King of Naples, [Tunis east /west] .

From almost the beginning, before Italian unification, there was a desire to insure the permanency of the new territories with Italian settlements. During the Unification in the 1860's the Settlements in Libya were treated like the rest of Italy [No one bothered to ask the Natives]. In 1935 with the Union of Germany and Austria, over Mussolini's objections, IL Duce took a hard look at Germany, and didn't like what he saw. Starting in 1935 and accelerating as conditions in Germany deteriorated, a trickle of Jews and Others, Started moving thru Italy into Libya. Italian involvement in the Spanish civil war 1936, showed the Italian Military what the new Bombers were capable of. So along with the new Workers, went Industry, as Italy started moving it, out out of range of a possible new European War. Close to Eight Million Immigrants, over 6 of them Jewish, moved to Libya between 1935 & 1945 when the war ended. By 1950 Jews made up close to 20% of Libya's population. With the Rise of Islamic fundamentalism in the 70's & 80's Many more Jews, moved from all over the Middle East. In 1992 when the new Libyan Provincial Flag was Designed, Jews were close to 35%. [TTL has no Israel] At the time of the ISOT Libya's Population was close to 90.000.000, but 35% of that lived in Tunis. The Gov't is still officially Fascist, but a very Democratic version.

Military; Italy has a very large Military, With the rise of a Fundamental Islamic State in Egypt in 1994, a large part of it is parked on the Egyptian Border.
This consists of 250.000 Soldiers with Tanks & Mobile Artillery, 75.000 Sailors, With Cruisers, Destroyers, and Patrol Boats. & 150.000 Airmen with close to a Thousand Fighters, [F 22 Analogue] and 200 Bombers [Older Italian version of a Jet B-29] . Libya was also in the process of building a defense Berm [50 foot deep trench with a fifty foot high dirt wall behind it, along the Egyptian Border, to prevent Terrorist infiltrators. this Berm was 70% complete and all the Heavy Equipment is still there.

Religion: About 50% of the Population is Muslim, 37% Jewish, & 13% Catholic. This is Misleading, because except for the small numbers of Orthodox [of all three religions] Most of the Population is extremely Secular.

Technology: Similar to OTLs with a very Decentralized industrial Base spread thru out to Country. Italy never forgot why it put the Industry there in the first place.

These two provinces are from the same TL (and are part of the same Imperial Japan) as the New Hebrides (Oceania 1). After the Mosaic Event, they decided to join the Republic of the New Hebrides rather than try to strike out on their own. A nephew of the Japanese Emperor was vacationing on Kalimantan (OTL Borneo) when the event happened, and a faction that is discontented with the present government is plotting a coup with the hopes of installing the Imperial Nephew as a puppet ruler...

In this TL, the Mexican Revolution did not occur due to Zapata being not refused in reclaiming land as occupied by another party. There was also the added POD that Diaz being more liberal towards the end of his last presidential term, thereby helping to usher Mexico into first world status in the late 1910's and early 1920's. This really threw off US foreign policy as other Latin American countries began to follow Mexico's path and trying to find their own road to first world status. In 1925 the Organization of American States was founded amongst Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico in order to help to safeguard their fragile economic status. [which was in full swing due to World War 1 and it's aftermath] This success quickly attracted attention by other nations, namely the struggling Republic of Columbia, who was given enough aid by the OAS to make it less of a target of US "imperialism"

By the year 2004, much of the OAS has become a respected international organization with huge financial/agricultural/commercial reserves. In response to this, the US has become a shadow of it's former self, and mainly depends on the OAS and Canada in solving it's increasing spat of economic crises. Europe is mainly either socialist democracies or consitutional monarchies. This is the same to Africa and Asia, which is being assisted by the OAS to help gain first world status. There has been some talk of actually founding a United Nations, but most people regard the OAS as the main group to solve their problems.

The Guyanuan Federated Republic is a mess. Due to constant US interference within the Guyanas (the last stronghold they had in South America), much of the population was orientated in aiding missions that would "deter the OSA dominance along our Southern borders". This intereference soon waned with the US slowly falling into economic recession in the '40's and '50's, leaving the Guyana's in a very messy situation. Thus, the OSA stepped in to help the Guyana's to get on their feet, and hopefully have them achieve first world status. This venture has gone on for about 50 years now with no end in sight. The reason behind this dismal failure mainly lies within Mexico being involved with the America Crisis [AZ, CA, NM left the Union and became Mexican territory] and the constant threat of pro-US milita forces hiding in the jungle. Much of the population within the GFR mostly consists of OSA personnel and "pioneers" from other countries that have come to aid the beleaguered Guyanan population.

This Austrailia is from the same TL that the PKH is from, although more militant due to the closeness it shares with member-states of the American Union of States. The reason that it is militant derives from a series of wars that they engaged in over the issue of "freeing" Indonesia from "terrorists". Although the American Union of States did experience a revolution in the treatment of member nation-states, this did not really lower the tension between the two nations. By 2004, Australia has annexed Indonesia as part of Austrailia, and is very keen on limiting any AUS expansion in the South Pacific. (It should also be noted that much of the tension has been altered towards China, who broke off from the AUS from the revolution)

The Cape Republic or Capeland is the most prosperous and advanced nation on the African continent. Its modern history began in 1652 when Jan van Riebeeck established Cape Town as a fuelling station for the Dutch East India Company. It was seized by the British in the early 19th century following the Napoleonic Wars. It soon became a popular destination for British settlers, and was also used as a penal colony during the 19th century, along with Australia. It became a member of the short-lived Union of South Africa, which dissolved after World War I, following the seccession of first Natal, and then the resurrected South African Republic (which was now made up of the Transvaal and Orange Free State), after the vicious Afrikaner rebellion which erupted in 1912. The province of Namibia became part of Capeland, following World War I and the successful invasion of the German colony. Southern and Western Angola were purchased from the Portuguese government in the 1930s, following the civil war which broke out between pro-Fascist and pro-democrat forces in that country. Botswana also became a Capeland protectorate in 1961, following the British government decision that Botswana would not be viable as an independent state. Barotseland in OTL Zambia was also granted to Capeland as a protectorate, and now exists as a semi-autonomous province of Capeland.

Capeland’s population is about 35-million, which is made up of 18-million blacks, 4-million coloureds (mixed race), 12-million whites and about one-million Asians, equally split between Chinese and Indians. Most of the whites are descended from British settlers (in this ATL Capeland rivaled Australia as a settlement destination following the end of the SA Union), at about 6-million. There are also 2,5-million Afrikaners, many who are refugees from fighting in the authoritarian and white supremacist South African Republic between the white minority government and black nationalists. There are also large minority populations of Portuguese (mainly in Angola-about 2-million), and the rest of the white population is made up of Germans and Greeks. The vote was granted to non-whites in 1965, and the moderate United African Democratic Union (UADMU) was voted into power. Today the main political parties are the left-wing Social Democrats (supported mainly by coloureds and working-class whites) (about 20% of support), the UADU which is a centrist non-racial movement supported by most blacks and liberal whites (55% of support) and has been in power since 1964, apart from a three year gap in the 1980s, the Liberal Democratic Party, which despite its name is relatively conservative and draws its support mainly from whites and some coloureds, (15% of support), and the Labour Party, communist orientated and supported mainly by blacks (10% of support). The country has a bicameral legislature, made up of a 300-member lower chamber, voted in through proportional representation, and a 250-member senate, where members stand in constituencies, and the first-past-the-post system applies. Each of the country’s 27 provinces each have their own legislatures, as well as governors. The level of provincial control over their own affairs is about the same as OTL’s Australian states.

The country is led by President Amos Mnyantheli, a moderate Xhosa whose family were migrants from the Transkei. His deputy is Michael Merriman, the most senior white in government and grandson of the first Capeland Prime Minister, John Merriman, who served from 1917 to 1922. In foreign relations the country is generally non-aligned but enjoys a good relationship with the United States, and sent troops to aid in the War on Terror in occupied Iran and United Korea. Other countries which Capeland enjoys good relations with include Australia, Britain, the Kingdom of KwaZulu-Natal, Israel (about 120 000 Jews live in Capeland), and most of Europe. Capeland is a valued member of the Commonwealth, and is a vociferous supporter of multilateralism in international forums. The economy is relatively strong, thanks to diamond deposits in Bechauana province and oil deposits off the coast of Huambo and Luanda provinces. Cape Town is generally viewed as one of the great cities of the world, Grahamstown hosts the third biggest annual art festival in the world, and Luanda is a popular tourist destination.

Same timeline as Asia 11. After their defeat in the Second Russo-Japanese War(1939-1940) Japan spent the 1940's in a period of political turmoil only resolved by the Emperor naming Admiral Yamamoto(hero of the last war due to the excellent record of the IJN during the war) as Shogun in 1945, a title and position not used since 1867. Under his authority the Communist agitators and the more militaristics elements in the armed forces were purged while the defense budget was raised to create a more flexible and modern Army. His greatest achievement was perhaps the Constitution of 1952.

The Constitution of 1952 created a House of Peers and a House of representatives modelled in the British model but most important was the Bills of Rights included in this Constitution, a copy of the United States Bill of Rights word for word. With this accomplished, Yamamoto step down after the national elections of 1954 to national acclaim. He is considered the father of the modern empire and today reverence to his memory is only second to the one given to deceased emperors.

The 1960's saw a bigger rapport with the United States in the fight against Communist. With the European nations colonial ending in Southeast Asia, Japan took over the mantle of defender of that new nations against Communist. Against Japanese advice the United States got embroiled in the former French IndoChina but thanks to Imperial mediation the former colony was partitioned into two nations by 1969. While only a stalemate was reached in IndoChina, the Communist movements in the newly formed nations of Malaysia and Indonesia were stamp out by japanese "advisors".

The 1970's and 1980's saw a big boast for the Japanese trade, especially consumers goods to the new SouthEast Asia nations for fossil fuel products. The Empire transformed itself into a capitalist paradise, with minimal business taxes and little regulation of business practices.The high growth of japanese heavy industries that started in the 1960's transformed the Empire in an economic power house by the late 1970's with the creation of the EACPS(East Asia CoProsperity Sphere) a free trade alliance. Also the 1980's saw the development of high technology industries especially in the military combines and the laser industries.

The last 15 years have seen the Empire transformed from the humbled nation of 1940 into a regional leader with over 200 ICBM but casting wary eyes to the dying giant to the West, The Soviet Union.

HISTORY & TECHNOLOGY:
The Cuban Missile War of 1962 hit this part of the world hardest
and left it the core of the Abyss. The survivors and their
descendents live in an anarchy which is slowly developing into
tribalism. Hundreds of local warlords control hamlets and
villages, but their reach extends little more than walking
distance at best. Technology has regressed to 15th Century
levels, with only a few pre-War artifacts still in working
condition, mostly guns (but a bullet could be a warlord's
ransom, so rare are they). Most people have no contact with
the world even ten miles away, and the idiosyncracies of
various warlords and the severe local conditions are bringing
about very divergent and sometimes bizarre societies and cultures.
Almost any kooky post-holocaust action movie can find a real
world version here, if not now than in the more immediate
postbellum period. Background radiation, birth defects,
cancer and such long term aftereffects still detectably linger.

CAPITOLS: New Saxonland was New Lundin (OTL New York City) but
the transfered area uses Jeru (OTL Salt Lake City). New Leoland used
Roeh Misip (OTL New Orleans) and the transfered area is being "protected"
by the Jeru government.
POPULATION: The transported population totals 75 million
LEADER: Original leader was Supervisor Edrick Smithson.
The ISOTed area is being led by Deputy Supervisor Thed Oludin.
GOVERNMENT: The governments of both nations were Electronic
Democracies with meritocratic bureaucracies and three branches
at the top. Right now, in the transported region, it's more "ad hoc"
as they try to find their balance. Their computer networks are also
decapitated, causing other complications. The New Saxonland part
of NA 5 is taking the lead. They were originally under a supervisor
elected to one six year term, a unicameral Assembly and a seven man national court. The NA 5 has the positions filled for the duration of
the emergency with the deputies of the leaders, who were located at
the secondary capitol of Jeru.
MILITARY: No strategic weapons were ISOTed. The cities and towns
are protected by the Local Forces, kind of like a combination of
SWAT teams and National Guard equiped with very near future supplies.
HISTORY & TECHNOLOGY:
In the early 4th Century C.E. the charismatic Legion leader
Guisureth Hratgason defects to the German tribes with his troops.
He joins up with King Eomanric instead of the competing contenders.
Hratgason is made "Prince" in return. His success in battle
leads to great popularity among the Goths of his religion, Mithraism.
This is mixed with the native Thorism and spreads widely. In addition
are 2 forms of Christianity, based on Eastern and Coptic Churches
and mixed with Neoplatonism and Nestorianism, as well as a
form of Buddhism expanded and altered by the Mongol Hordes.
The New World was colonized in the 15th Century and became
a region of independent nations a couple centuries later.
The Industrial Revolution began in the 16th Century here,
and progressed almost 200 years ahead of OTL until March 1802
when a global thermonuclear war ravaged civilization. Technology
was thrown back a century, and technophobia and Mithraic
Fundamentalism long hindered the recovery. However, nuclear
weapons were finally reinvented in the middle of the 20th Century.
Within a decade, the total number of nations to test nuclear
weapons grew to eleven. This scared the stuffing out of
everybody and led to the founding of the Pect of Eleven in 1957.
The Pact of Eleven is a world organization with one prime law...
anyone, even a member, who uses weapons of mass destruction
MUST be erased from the face of the Earth. Gradually this was
expanded to aid other countries, scientific research, trade
arrangements, etc. making the Pact of Eleven similar to a
United Nations with a nuclear arsenal as other nations became
secondary members. Both New Saxonland and New Leoland were
primary members. In general, technology is slightly more
advanced than OTL 2004, being one step farther along the
progression R&D - laboratory experiment - engineering prototype -
cutting edge - SOTA - consumer product - bargain basement.
Exceptions are nuclear weapons, which are stuck at c1970
equivalent (and do not exist in the ISOTed area anyway) and
procedures for obtaining and utilizing energy and recycling
materials, which is several "rungs up the ladder". For very rough
comparison, New Saxonland corresponds to the United States and
New Leoland corresponds to Latin America, but these are analogies
rather than parallels.

HISTORY:
In the mid 15th century, the Songhai King Sonni Ali assured Songhai its independence from the declining power of Mali and conquered the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. After his death, Ali's son was overthrown by his general Muhammad I Askia, founder of the Askia Dynasty. Muhammad reformed the Songhai government by creating a large and elaborate bureaucracy and appointed qadis, Muslim judges, to run the legal system under Islamic legal principles. He also standardized weights, measures, and currency, allowing culture across Songhai to homogenize. He also reversed the official antipathy towards Islam after a pilgrimage to Mecca and reestablished Timbuktu as a seat of Islamic faith and learning and it became the greatest center of learning on the African continent. Books were considered as valuable as gold and a man's wealth could be counted in the number of books he owned. Scholars were held in the highest esteem and they pondered the philosophy of society, Islamic ethics, the nature of God, astronomy, grammar, law and medicine. In the midst of his reforms, Muhammad also conquered the remainder of Mali, making Songhai the undisputed master of West Africa.

Over the 16th century, Songhai's manageable, centralized empire had a growing rich culture and great commercial wealth and its influence spread as far east as the Hausa city-states. Its growing population also spread west into former Ghana and beyond, soon reaching the Portugese trading base of Cacheu. A swift campaign by overwhelming Songhay forces seized the small port and it was soon expanded, allowing for a regular trade with the Portugese and other Europeans, trading salt, gold, ivory and slaves while also having a crucial port for Europe for voyages towards the spice trade of the east. It also gave Songhai access to European technology and the Songhay military and industry soon adapted, allowing for Songhai to repel invasions from Morocco in the latter portion of the century.

Over the next few centuries, Songhai became the major supplier of slaves for European colonies in the Americas, giving it additional commercial influence, and its culture spread north into the oases of the Sahara, south to the damp southern coasts of West Africa and east to Lake Chad. Successive Kings of the Askia Dynasty became more secular in response to the stubborn paganism of most of the peoples of the empire and thus remained open to European culture and technology. During the 19th century, Europe largely ceded the entirety of West Africa outside the northern coastal strips of the Barbary States to Songhai and took only trading ports along the Gold and Ivory Coasts similar to Macao and Hong Kong in China. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Great Powers of Europe competed for influence in Songhai and helped it to start to industrialize by helping to build railroads, roads, canals, etc. Songhay forces fought in all three world wars in Europe, Africa and the Middle East and has become a major country for foreign investment during the remainder of the 20th century and into the 21st.

Following the Munich Conference of 1938, Hungary and Poland together plotted the annexation of a majority of the Czechoslovak state. Poland came away with the small Zaolzie area while Hungary occupied the entirety of Slovakia. Soon, the shrunken Czech Republic willingly joined Poland. Hitler was enraged by the unauthorized takeover of Czechoslovakia and declared war on both Poland and Hungary, once an ally. The British and French came down against the Germans, tying up much of the German army in the west (not fighting but guarding the Rhineland). Mussolini was, meanwhile assassinated, and his son-in-law, Ciano, came to power, aligning Italy with the Hungarians and Poles. When fighting began, Poland and Hungary attacked West, driving the Germans out of Silesia. Hitler was overthrown by Ludwig Beck and Wilhelm Canaris, who surrendered to the Poles and Hungarians and destroyed the Nazi state. In exchange for the Polish annexation of Silesia, the Germans were allowed to hang onto both their independence and to Austria.

Soon, another war began in the East, which ended with the signing of the Treaty of Minsk in 1947. The Poles and Hungarians moved towards unification, along with the Lithuanians and Latvians, who had suffered horrendously in the first stages of the war. The two small nations, depopulated by nearly 50% by the Soviets, joined with their former enemy Poland, who effectively occupied both as allies. With the death of Miklos Horthy in 1957, Hungary became a republic. The next year, the Republic of Poland officially merged with Hungary. The Treaty of Visegrád created the union of the same name. Meanwhile, tensions continued to be strained with the Soviet Union (who the Poles and Hungarians were unable to completely defeat) and they grew steadily worse with the rest of Europe after the inauguration of Charles de Gaulle in France. Visegrád, Germany, Italy, Estonia, Romania, and Bulgaria all signed the Continental Pact in the mid-1960s, effectively marking the start of a three way trade war with France (and her Allies) and the Soviet Union. The Non-War between the three regions was just starting to come to a stop (with a Visegrádian victory) when the Event happened…

Tasmania became a center of the Whaling industry and boomed for a while as Grayston became the New Bedford of the Pacific. Following the annexation, not that much else happened on Tasmania, until the exploration of Antarctica kicked off in the 1910’s. Soon, Grayston was the bustling port of Antarctic explorers.

Bombarded twice in its history by the British, the ports of Tasmania entered a period of decline, trading mostly in sheep wool, despite efforts to industrialize the island state. Following the Antarctic War of the early 1980s, a permanent military base was established at Grayston, replacing the west coast of Australia as the center for the US Indian Ocean Fleet. Again, Tasmania entered a lulled period of light activity in the two decades before the Event…

HISTORY:
After the crushing blows delivered by the Great War, the influenza epidemic of the 1920's, and the failure of Prohibition, the once-proud United States had collapsed. With the secession of Texas in 1930, states across North America quickly jumped off the sinking ship of Federalism. By 1936, the former United States and Dominion of Canada had solidified into 22 different nations. Among them was the Industrial States of America, based around the industrial centers of the Great Lakes, and its main rivals the Empire State, based in the former Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and the People's Collective, based in the former Breadbasket of the US and a Christian Socialist state. Various brushfire wars demolished the intercontinental railway system at national borders, and the few large highway systems built or under construction quickly fell into disrepair or were sabotaged. The automobile, once thought destined to become the national shipping vehicle, gave way to gyrotaxis, aerobuses and large cargo zeppelins that commanded the skylines and made trade possible between friendly nations. Taking advantage of the new situation and the ensuing chaos, groups of air pirates soon took to the air and began preying upon the new aerial shipping. Nearly out of the public eye, the 1930s also saw the beginning of the Unionist movement which dreams of a reunited North America and commits acts of terror against the various nations of the continent.

The ISA, though it had twice the industrial capacity of its closest two rivals put together, lacked access to markets as it was surrounded by enemies and rivals who made it anything but easy to get to markets. The Confederation of Dixie made up the majority of the ISA's continental market, but each individual state had its own fees for shipping. During the late 30s, the ISA grew closer to the Third Reich which lead to technological partnerships that included a business partnership between Messerschmitt and General Motors. When the War of Expansion broke out in Europe, France went down under the panzers and zeppelins of Germany and Britain found itself alone against Germany's seemingly unstoppable military. In North America, a similar situation broke out when the Empire State signed a mutual protection pact with the People's Collective in an effort to contain the ISA. With Europe distracted by war, however, the ISA launched an invasion of the People's Collective and after an extensive air campaign in which the Collective's star pilot, Aaron Whitaker, was killed by the Red Skull Legion, an ISA-backed air pirate band, and its limited industry smashed, the ISA occupied their territory and turned east against the Empire State. That war soon proved inconclusive as the air war pitted the ISA's massive industry against the Empire State's militias and 'volunteers' from across North America and even from Britain. When Germany finally defeated the Soviet Union in Europe and signed the Soviet-German Armistice, Britain followed suit and then brought its full attention on the ISA, threatening war from Ontario if a treaty wasn't signed. Sullenly, the ISA was forced to agree and the ISA's possession of the former People's Collective was confirmed.

In the post-war world, the ruthless leader of the Red Skull Legion, Jonathan 'Genghis' Khan, got himself elected President due to his exploits during the war and made his former pirate band the premier air militia of his chosen nation. He also cut the strings the country's businessmen and financiers held on the Presidency, which had made it largely a figurehead, and largely crushed the resistance in the former People's Collective, opening it up for development. The borders of North America continued to be rearranged as the century went on, with the Appalachia Partition that gave the ISA Kentucky. It also saw the ISA's most embarassing defeat in the Lakota War that saw the small Native American nation's successful guerrilla warfare against the overwhelming ISA forces that tried to push into the Disputed Western Territories that ended in a resumption of the status quo and ended the ISA's drive for acquiring territory.

Today, the ISA is the economic powerhouse of North America and faces alliances on its western and eastern borders. Relations with the Greater German Reich are cordial, including the merged international megacorporation of Messerschmitt-General Motors, or MGM, though National Socialism has made no footholds in the ISA. It's greatest ally in North America is the Confederation of Dixie, though Dixie has extensive economic and political connections with Britain and it still faces its traditional problems regarding access to markets for its goods and agriculture. Air travel has far more prestige than land travel and, instead of the suburban sprawls of OTL, urban areas instead grew upward. The ISA capital Chicago, along with such cities as Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo, Indianapolis and Cincinnati, are dominated by skyscrapers that, instead of the flat helipad tops of OTL, have spires reminsicent of the Empire State Building in the Art-Deco 30s style and more modern steel and glass that serve as mooring towers for civilian and military zeppelins and have landing pads for helitaxis and aerobuses, some even having trams that run between buildings. Unlike Britian Hesperia, has a large standing army of over 2 million men. There is also a Small Modern Air Force, of 80.000 Men, 1500 fighter & 250 Bombers, All the lastest generation of planes to come out of the Great War, Unfortunally this was spread out over the whole Country, [afr 5-6-10- & Half of 11 & 4] so about 1/3 of the Navy, & AF, and about half of the Army. was left behind
History: This is from my Hesperia TL, Were a Small Group of Shipwrecked Roma-Greek Merchants establish a Roman Colony in OTL Senagal, 50 BC. over the next 400 years they expand, and after the Collaspe of the Western Roman Empire in the 5 century, continue to take over all southern Africa, along with a colony in Braxile. History: In sept 1862, Lee's Forces were on the way to capture the Union Garrison and Armory at Harpers Ferry. On sept 12th General Meade received a "lost Order" detailing Lee's plans. Due to this Meade split his force sending 12,000 men under Generals Franklin . & ??? up the Middletown Valley to cross over South Mountain at Crampton & Cumberland Gaps . General Stuart surveyed the passes and sent a extra brigades to reinforce , along with a Calvary troop, On the morning of the 14th General Franklin with 8000 soldiers attacked the 1200 defenders, by late afternoon he broke thru splitting the Confederate forces and forcing Lee to fall back on the Anteim Creek,

ITTL when Richerson sees the number of Union forces he sends a messenger asking for additional reinforcements, Longstreet wheels his army in position while Franklin is regrouping. When Franklin sends his troops forward again the lead units as lead by a green Captain, the Units commander, Major Rutherford B Hayes, having been killed earlier. As such Franklin's forces enter the Trap. Longstreet's Artillery opens up, routing the Union Forces. Sending Stuart's & Hampton's Calvary to pursuit, Longstreet again wheels, this time thru the Middletown valley. On the morning of the 15th Meade finds his army trapped between Lee's and Longstreet's. The ensuing Battle of Sharpsburg is the Bloodiest day of battle in the History of the Country. By the evening with thousands of his troops killed, Meade asks for terms, and on the morning of the 16th sept 1862 at Sharpsburg Courthouse, General Meade surrenders the Army of the Potomac. Of course this wasn't the end of Fighting, But Politically it was the End of the War. In the 1862 Elections, the Peace Candidates took over the House, and the war ended in early 1863. Also in 1863 Emperor Maximilian's forces captured the rebel Jaunito Daiz and his main ringleaders, taking the steam out of the Mexican Rebellion.

In 1865 the States of California, Washington, & Oregon left the Union forming the Pacific Republic. In 1905 British Columbia decided against joining The Dominion of Canada, instead choosing to stay with their Pacific Friends. Then again in 1912 during the Great War, The Czar needing Money for the war, Sold Alaska to the Neutral Republic.

Following the Civil War and the Mexican Rebellion, There were hard feelings between the Countries. but time and Economic Forces lead to a drawing together. The Confederates started a slow process of emancipation in 1872. Mexico & the Pacific Republic joined the US, & the CS, in the race to Industrialize, With Labor/Capital strife replacing Land Reform/Labor, as the problem of the Time.

When Japan anexxed Hawaii in 1892, and the Philippines in 1895, all four Countries joined in Protest. In 1911 when the Great War Started all Four Countries declared Neutrality, and then all four joined together in entering in 1913. Then in 1916 after the War they all Joined to form along with Canada the NAFTZ [ North America Free Trade Zone] .

Technology: Alumiun Smelting was developed in the late 1880's, and by the mid 1890's several new alloys were produced. One of these Nickumiun, was as strong as steel but only 1/3 the weight. this allowed the production of very powerful light weight small Steam Engines. The first Dirigible was Flown in France in 1899, with a Paris/London flight only two years later. By the time of the Great War in 1911, there were several Airship Companies offering passenger service in Europe and North America. By the end of the Great War in 1915 Both sides were producing Fiberglass/Aluimuin Skinned airships. In 1916 the first TransAtlantic Passenger service started, and the race was on to find new and better materials. Modern Dirigibles are made of the same Carbon fiber/ Titanium as most Aircraft.

In 1924 Nicklaus Tesla Exploring a problem with very high voltage Radio Transmissions, developed a practical & safe means of broadcasting power. The first Sets were huge with hundreds of very large tubes. but over time the size began dropping. with the invention of the Transformer in the 1940's, the Mini-circuit in the 50's, & the micro circuit Board in the 70's, the receiver size dropped small enough to fit into Passenger Cars. thro it is still to big to fit into Household appliances.

In 1959 Bell Laboratory's announced the discovery of A Cold Fusion Energy System, a by product of Superconductor research, Cold Fusion works best at very low temperatures, and very large Containers, Over the last several decades new Materials for Superconductors have allowed the reduction in size such that large Vessels like Aircraft Carriers, BB's, down to the newest Destroyers, are equipped, with them.

As the size of the powers receivers precluded Private ownership a Extensive system of Public transport, from electric freight, & Mag-Lev Passenger Trains, down to Electric Trollies, & Buses Developed. As such there never was a need for Interstates Hiways.

History: This timeline introduces a terrible plague into the pacific islands sometime shortly after the first humans arrived there. The plague was worst on OTL New Caledonia, still called by the natives "Plague Island", and OTL Fiji, which was only sparsely inhabited for many years. To continue the species, there was much interbreeding within families, which caused several genetic mutations, some of which are still prevalent today. For example, the native-descended men of the New Brittany Islands (OTL Vanatu) are far more feminine-looking than their OTL counter parts, and less strong (Which has led to jokes about stupid mainlander sailors trying to marry Newbrittainian guys). The plague did not leave the South Pacific area, and did eventually die out. The islands laid isolated from the modern world, until 1783, when the French General Jean-Phillipe Lapointe discovered the island chain today called New Brittany. The french never settled there, and later, when the United States, believeing it's manifest destiny was to "spread across the world, and spread the seed of democracy", took over the island, as well as much of Australia. The Americans destroyed much of the island's native culture, and no native villiages remain in 2004. The state of Pacifica is dependent on tourism for it's well-being.

History: After the Vietnam War and collapse of South Vietnam, the USA attempted to move many of the South Vietnamese who would go to the Island of New Caledonia, which in this TL was uninhabited by humans. Unfortunately, the US could only get about 400,000 on a large fleet of ships, and several sunk on the trip. Modern-day New Vietnam is a struggling province of the United States, which was supposed to declare the island independent by 1995, but has not done so.

In this world the fourth crusade went to Egypt as planned and Romania never fell into the hands of the catholics.
The crusade was relativly succesful in establishing a christian kingdom in Egypt however this only lasted a century or so before being overran by arabs once more.
In 1250 the emperor realised that the Roman Empire could never reclaim its former glory and set about defending what it still held.
Romania surived through the renaissance and as the western Europeans set out over the seas it set about reconquering lost land from the muslims over whom thanks to new technology it now had the upper hand.
In 1700 a canal was completed linking the mediteranian to the red sea, this brought great wealth to Romania through owning the best route to India. The Romans arrived late in the east to attain much influence however in these areas they did manage to become a second rate power at least. The main Roman interest was in expanding its land borders however, pusing back Islam and questing deep into Africa for the lost Christian Kingdom of Prester John (even after it discovered Abysinia it did not accept this was the lost Christian kingdom and continued its expansion into Africa).

Romania is a federated constitutional monarchy spread over Turkey, Greece, the eastern Mediteranian coast and Egypt. Its other former colonial possesions were granted independence with the changing times however remained close to Romania in much the same way as with the British commonwealth.
Romania is one of the richest nations in todays world thanks to its links with its former possessions large oil stocks.

TECHNOLOGY: Late WW2-1960s. The civilian sector has 1960s electronics while the military ranges from late WW2 to the 1960s in technology itself. The military doctrines are similar to OTL's pre-World War 1 and airplanes, while similar to late WW2, are largely used for scouting though they have aerial combat capabilities. Battleships are still the main warship of the Incan navy, though they are designed with a small flight deck for a small amount of scouting aircraft and have technology similar to OTL's 1960s. The Army is also equal to OTL's 1960s with automatic rifles, helmets, etc, but all armor capability is in the form of armored vehicles bristling with machine guns and rockets for use mostly on roads and in cities.
HISTORY:
In Japan, the Kemmu Restoration led by Emperor Go-Daigo succeeded and all of Japan came under direct imperial rule by 1345. As a result, peace was established between the daimyo of the Home Islands and Japanese trade both domestically and in the waters of East Asia flourished. When the Portugese arrived in the Malay Archipelago in the early 16th century, open conflict broke out between Imperial Japan and the Portugese over control of Malacca and the Moluccas, or Spice Islands. Japan took over the Nanpou Islands (Philippines) in addition to Malacca and the Moluccas in an effort to lock out the European interlopers from their trade and, in 1521, encountered a Spanish vessel in the Nanpou Islands arriving from east across unknown waters, under the command of Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan was escorted to the Imperial court at Kyoto where he told of the New World that was discovered across what he called the Pacific Ocean. Magellan was sent home to Spain loaded down with silk, ceramics and spices and the Emperor decided to send expeditions across the Pacific to explore the New World themselves.

In 1524, a Japanese expedition arrived at the Incan coastline and met with Incan officials. They believed the Japanese to be demigods related to their peace-loving god Viracocha, who was described 'as a man with fair skin and white beard, attired in a long robe and sandals, carrying a staff with a cougar lying at his feet' and had left from the coast after being hounded by 'evil people in short clothes', promising one day to return. As it was late in the year, the Japanese expedition was taken to the nearest tambo, or hostel, and wintered there until spring when they made their way towards the Incan capital of Cuzco to meet with Emperor Huayna Capac. Unfortunately, the Incan Emperor died before the Japanese arrived but arrived just in time to intervene in the brewing civil war between his sons Atahuallpa and Huascar. Seen as demigods, the Japanese expedition was allowed to choose the successor. After some negotiations, the Japanese chose Atahuallpa and Huascar was executed as he tried to flee Cuzco to raise support elsewhere. Atahuallpa granted Japan trading bases along the coasts and a trading post in Cuzco itself. When the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizzarro arrived in Incan lands in 1532, they were seen as the 'evil people in short clothes', an image that Japanese traders and envoys played up, and Pizzarro and his band were defeated by Incan forces with Japanese advisors.

Over the following centuries, the Incan Empire became a client state of the Empire of Japan and both Shinto and Buddhism were introduced. Eventually, an Incan version of Shinto developed in which it was believed that Viracocha was somehow related to the Japanese goddess Amaterasu who is the divine ancestor of the Japanese Imperial family, making the Inca and Japanese practically family. The marriage of an Incan Emperor to a Princess of the Japanese Imperial line in the 17th century helped solidify the ties between the two empires. Today, the Inca are part of Japan's Pacific Co-Prosperity Zone, a military and economic alliance system, that controls most of the Pacific Rim and islands through colonies and client states. Tensions with the patchwork of European-descended nations and colonies in the rest of South America are high and Incan forces hold regular military exercises with Imperial Japanese forces from the Japanese colony of Shippou (Argentina).

No Mussolini rise in Italy. Hitler still rises in Germany. Abyssinia isn’t enthralled in WW2. Tens of Thousands of German and later Polish (if they can get out), French, Danish, Italian and Libyan (Italy eventually still allied with Germany) Jews flee to Abyssinia eventually settling manly in Addis Ababa and in special areas, formerly Italian Somaliland and Eritrea, manly Eritrea, occupied by England assigned to them. Eventually around 100,000 Jews settle in what was formally Italian Eritrea and around 25,000 in Somaliland and Addis Ababa. At the end of WW2 Eritrea was made a Jewish State in an alternative to hotly contested Palestine. Zionist terrorist still hampered the development of a Palestine state until many were forcefully deported with British and Jordanian help, but eventually a Jewish enclave was created around Tel Aviv after a brief war of independence in 1950. Eritrea Jewish population around 250,000 most Jews moving to Israel instead, which quickly destroyed Palestine and mist placed thousands following a war in 1957. Eritrea developed comparable to other more developed African nations. It eventually lead in technology for the Horn of Africa, because of the small European community that stayed in Eritrea. Abyssinia developed much better with the influx of European Jews and no WW2 to devastate fragile agriculture and infrastructure. Population growth remained steady, but lower then in our timeline. No famines throughout the later part of the century. More stable government, but a steady elimination of monarchic power. Ethiopia is much better of then in our time line, but still not close to those of stable Northern Africa countries. Growth rate is steady and the country was earned the name of the “Turtle of the Horn”.

History: In this world Ghengis Kahn was knocked off his horse and broke his neck while he was riding from china to the islamic world. After his death the mongols returned to china to consolidate their power. Because the mongols never invaded the caliphate never fell and it continued it's expansion. All of india and much of europe and africa were ruled by the caliph at the caliphate's peak. Because this vast area was ruled by a benevolent (for the time) government that encouraged scientific advancement, it soon became the most developed region of the world.
The caliphate finally fell after an influx of diseases, rebellions, and barbarian invasions, similar to those that destroyed rome. When it broke up a dark age ensued that lasted until the late 1500's when a muslim explorer from morocco discovered the americas. Soon there was an age of discovery similar to the one in our time line, except for the the main players were cordova (iberia) morocco, firanja (muslim france) and egypt. These, and other muslim nations took over most of the world. In what we would call 1897 a world war started and lasted until 1909, leaving most of the world devestated. Peace lasted until 1948 when another world war started. When it ended in 1953 the powerful nations of the world were exhausted tired of war. They started up the equivalant of the UN and helped the less developed countries improve. One of these less developed countries was the republic of india. It had been an egyptian colony until the end of the first world war, and had been neutral in the second. It took the world by storm in the Indian economic miracle. By 2000 the republic had the world largest economy and second most powerful military. Roughley 2/3 of the nation was mosaiced into this world in asia 7.

History: When Henry VI lived in 1196, and went on to conquer Jerusalem, Constantinople, and England, he set in course a chain of events that would alter Europe forever.

A scientific revolution in Frankfurt led to the development of optics and navigation technology centuries ahead of OTL, with Westland, a German based colony, being planted in New England by 1298. Italians dug a canal through a Christian Egypt, bringing Ethiopia back into mainstream civilization and stimulating the commercial revolution.


Italian sailors and Franciscan missionaries led to the formation of Vipashyana, a syncretic Buddhist/Christian/Hindu faith that revitalized the Hindu nations of Asia. After the Il-Khanate invaded North India instead of Mesopotamia, fatally weakening itself and the Muslims, the Pandyan Empire stretched north. Juliet Capuletta, a famous woman in both Italy and India, led the glorious campaign to liberate Dehli.

The Mongols, weakened by their invasion of Germany, were ultimately driven out of Russia by Vladimir-Suzdal, which reestablished the Empire of the Rus. Song China, copying some Byzantine tactics, and with the convenient death of the man we know as Khublai Khan, struggled on until gunpowder weapons let it retake North China before collapsing.

Trade flowed across the world, knitting the world together as never before seen. Although Westland would ultimately fall to Britannia, who took it and made it part of Avalon, Germany heavily settled Eastern Europe, vassalizing most of it during the reign of Frederick II. Germany, stretching from Marseilles to Antwerp, and from Krakow to Trieste, dominated Europe in a way that made OTL Louis XIV look peaceful.

But The Empire bankrupted itself helping Avalon gain independence from England, and Kaiser Wilhelm was overthrown in the Revolution. Eventually the great hero, Susano Schmidt, took over the Republic in a coup and ushered in the Statthalter era. His glorious campaigns would crush Britanny, threaten Britain, and even reach Constantinople, although he would fail to take the city.

By his death in 1648, Europe was united in the European Federation, aside from Byzantium and the Kingdom of Russia. Technology advanced rapidly; by 1750, they were developing zeppelins, and by 1900 they had colonies throughout the system. Out of the ashes rose the Republic. People around the world combined to prevent anything like the war from happening again, establishing a state based on merit. The scientists and engineers who led humanity through the Dark Ages of 1910 to 1950 took control.

The end result is a state which is, to our eyes, disturbing. There’s free enterprise, but you cannot pass money onto your children when they turn eighteen. Religion is tolerated but frowned upon. Freedom of speech exists, but It’s not a democracy as such. Only those who but have done Federal Service, and participated in the “Reclamation”, can vote.

Incidentally, they believe it is their duty to unite humanity.

Military: The military is, as the planet has been united, quite small, consisting only of security forces and an equivalent to the National Guard. It can be upgraded quite rapidly, however, and can theoretically reach, if there was all out mobilization, 2 million.

Technology: Extensive biotech abilities. Genetic engineering is done on all children to screen out disease, on crops, and has been used to create Homo Superior, heavily modified humans who are smarter, stronger, and healthier than normal humans.

Electronics are fairly advanced, but transportation relies on things such as zeppelins and mass transit. Personal automobiles are considered unnecessary and frivolous in a world that still feels the effects of a nuclear war.

Since I have China now I think I'll go down a different route for Sri Lanka-

Military: Not much, this area was not a security concern in any way. There is a naval presence at Sri Lanka though not much else.
Technology: Similar to OTL
History: From a world which diverged from the commonwealth in 1796 with the French being slightly more succesful in a war against Britain then they were ICTL.
A major feature of this world was the British freeing of South America from the Spannish in the early 19th century. The Great war took place from 1905-1909 here and featured most of the same sides however it was a far less brutal affair then the Commonwealth GW.
The Commonwealth was founded in this world however here it was clear it was very much just a more democratic British empire and not the world spanning government it is ICTL. By 2004 the Commonwealth is still the largest nation in the world bringing in many free nations including by a strange coincidance the Dutch in much the same way as ICTL.

Ceylon remained a Dutch colony in this world due to there being no Napoleonic Wars, the rest of India did fall to Britain similar to OTL however Sri Lanka remained Dutch.
Sri Lanka today is being integrated as a member of the commonwealth after the merger between it and the Dutch empire.

History: In this ATL The Kingdom of Siam was able to take over the countries of Burma and Viet Nam as well as supress a Cambodian Revolution. The country kept the name Siam because it did now in fact control the peninsula. (Siam is Thai for Peninsula) Siam kept up its history of independence but traded with most of Europe throughout the eightteenth to twentieth centuries. The Kingdom remained militarily indepent, joining the Allies in the Great Japanese War (WWII) less then fifteen years later they rejoined their allies in the Chino-Siam war of 1951.( Korean War) Allied Victory insured that Communism would spread throughout the continent of Asia. The Kingdom of Siam evolved from one of the largest centers of trade in the world to becoming a hub for international buisness and technology. The Kingdom of Siam has a role in this ATL not that different than Japan does in OTL.

History:

The attempt of the Empress Dowager Ci Xi to overthrow the reformist Emperor Guangxu in 1898 end in failure. Vengeful reformist ministers orchestrate massive retributions against conservatives in the administrate and army, anti-reformist secret societies, and Confucian orthodoxy not only help eliminate opposition, but open vacuums for pro-reformist nationalist.

The country quickly made efforts reflecting the thinking of a group of progressive scholar-reformers who had impressed the court with the urgency of making innovations for the nation's survival. Influenced by the Japanese success with modernization, the reformers declared that China needed more than "self-strengthening" and that innovation must be accompanied by institutional and ideological change.

The imperial edicts for reform covered a broad range of subjects, including stamping out corruption and remaking, among other things, the academic and civil-service examination systems, legal system, governmental structure, defense establishment, and postal services. The edicts attempted to modernize agriculture, medicine, and mining and to promote practical studies instead of Neo-Confucian orthodoxy. The court also sent students abroad for firsthand observation and technical studies. All these changes were brought about under a de facto constitutional monarchy.

The country slowly modernized and began to undergo slight industrialization in the early 20th century. Westerns still occupied huge pieces of China though. After the out break of the Great War, China say a change to group these areas back. In 1917, with covert German support (after promising to handover control of it’s colonies to China), well armed, reformist Chinese secret societies revolt throughout western occupied China, quickly supported by the modernized Imperil Army. Stressed by involvement in Europe and the Middle East, mainland UK and France colonies are quickly sized by the Chinese as is Russian occupied pieces of the North. The Allies, afraid of possible invasion of other Asian colonies, agree to sign over these areas, but keep several trade privileges, at the same time funding Japanese attacks into Manchuria.

Following the war continued modernization made China an increasingly powerfully country, despite Western and Japanese attempts to undermine the country’s stability. Involvement in WW2 (Chinese involvement didn’t alter the outcome of WW1) was limited to puppeting Mongolia and creating a Korean nation out of formerly Japanese land. After the victory of the Allies in 1944 (lesser war in the Pacific and butterflys ends the war almost a year and a half earlier). China quickly become one of main anti-Soviet countries during the Cold War, eventually becoming the World’s number one economic power because of foreign investment.

China has slowly moved politically to democracy, the world’s biggest in 2004. It still was a figurehead Emperor, devoid of all real power since the 1947. Most power resides either in the office of the Prime Minister or the 10,000 strong all-Chinese Parliament. A recent nationalist surge after economy decline after oil-shortages was caused the majority coalition to both incorporate and become lead by the new nationalist political party, the New Birth Party.

Well, the borders of China in it's ARL were the Qing at it's hieghts for some minor readjustments (Turkic lands in the west were occupied by the Soviets). The area ISOTed to SME are roughtly the coast and heartland of China with the exception of Manchuria. It well try to take back all its land that have been part of it for hundreds of years (Asia's 5, 11 and 6). Taiwan was part of the Qing Empire, and if not ISOTed, the Chinese will try to claim it. Okinawa is owned by the Japanese, which, if ISOTed, will quickly be put under protection of the Chinese.

History:
After the Second Crusade decided that the county of Edessa was too difficult to retake the crusaders instead decided that the best course of action would be to combine all the various kingdoms together for mutual defense. This policy worked so well that the Arabs were never able retake the Crusader States, although near constant warfare with the Arabs led to the CS being very militaristic.

The long term Catholic occupation of the holy places also brought many settlers from Catholic Europe. No Protestant Reformation in this ATL. This became increasingly common during the industrialization of Europe and the Middle East and the population explosion that followed. Although a good portion of the population was still Muslim. Future crusades also drove Muslims out of North Africa and Islam never penetrated south.

All was good until the Great War of 1907 when Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic branches of Christianity reunited under the Roman branch and launched a crusade to drive all Islam out of existence. By this point Islam had taken full control of India, Southeast Asia, and Indonesia. This inevitably futile effort lead to the deaths of millions of Muslims who refused to convert and the expulsion of all Muslims from the Crusader States (mostly Catholic due to conversion and the numerous settlers driving out the locals). After ten long years of fighting a peace treaty lead to Catholic control of Syria and the surrender of Anatolia to the Byzantine Republic.

From this point Catholic obsession with destroying the Muslim Empire led to a fantastic rate of technological development (the Great War was fought with mid-19th century tech), finally supported by the Pope and tested in wars between Catholic states.

Today the Crusader States are largely reliant on religious tourism and weapons manufacturing (making a large surplus) and a have deep hatred for all things Muslim. Also, in this TL Christianity, although almost entirely Catholic is fairly tolerant of religious “discussion”, so long as no one gets “Islamic” ideas (having no other rivals) and Jews are largely living in Islamic areas or have peaceably converted to Christianity.

Civilian Technology in Austro-Hungary is roughly at the level of 1990 OTL, whilst military technology is around the 2010 mark. Quantum Physics is far more advanced – with military, intelligence gathering, and communication technology now utilising quantum computing. However, nuclear theory was never pursued so this TL is far more reliant on fossil fuels.

History:
On June 28th 1914, Franz Ferdinand (1863-1931) – Archduke of Austria, heir to his childless uncle the Emperor Franz Josef (1830-1916) – avoids an attempt on his life by a Serbian terrorist. Fighting breaks out Sarajevo, triggering a civil war in Bosnia. The Emperor Franz Josef deploys Austro-Hungarian peacekeeping forces in an attempt to regain control. This sparks off the Third Balkan War (1914-1918), in which Bosnian and Serbian rebels enlisted the help of sympathetic Bulgarian and Romanian forces in their guerrilla fight against the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Needless to say, the Austro-Hungarian forces vastly outnumbered those of the rebels, but shock tactics allowed them to sustain their campaign until 1918, when under Ferdinand II, Austro-Hungary occupied both Bulgaria and Romania.

In 1916, the Emperor Franz Josef dies of natural causes, and is succeeded by his nephew who becomes Emperor Ferdinand II. With no clear heir of his own, Ferdinand II – with the backing of the dual parliaments – revokes his children’s morganatic status, leaving Maximilian (b. 1902), Ernst (b.1904) and Sophie (b. 1901) as his heirs. On February 11th 1931, Ferdinand II dies suddenly from a heart attack, and is succeeded by his son who becomes Emperor Maximilian.

Between 1948 and 1950, Austro-Hungary is plunged into Revolution. Revolutionaries championing the creation of an Austro-Hungarian republic clash with the police, military and supporters of the Emperor. After two years of anarchy, the two sides agree to negotiations and a compromise is reached. In 1951, ‘The Former Austro-Hungarian Empire’ is declared a constitutional monarchy under Emperor Maximilian and a dual chambered parliament, to be elected through universal suffrage.

On the 11th July 1959, Anna Rosenbaum is born to a peasant family in Cluj.

In 1964, the international community pressures the Former Austro-Hungarian Empire to cede territory to various ethnic groups. The states of Moravia, Silesia and Bohemia are officially recognised as independent in the Treaty of Kiev (1967). However, these newfound states will retain allegiance to Austro-Hungary, as vassals in all but name.

In a popular coup in 1989, Maximilian is kidnapped and shot. Anna Rosenbaum, a charismatic right-wing orator from a peasant background is installed as dictator. She declares herself Empress, albeit in name alone, and immediately shuts down parliament. In 1993, the Empress reluctantly allows elections to be held, although the electorate is limited to her known supporters. A conservative government is installed, winning with smaller majorities in elections in 1997 and 2001. Another, freer election is due to be held in 2005.

Technology: Technology in the Empire’s ATL runs approximately ten years in advance of OTL. Caseless ammunition weapons entered service in the 1970’s, aircraft equivalent to the Eurofighter Typhoon started coming off the production lines in the 1980’s and the first fuel cell powered car went on sale in 1991 and there are three permanently manned space stations in orbit. Generally speaking it seems as though every technological development in OTL that was initially turned down as unworkable or too expensive was seized upon with enthusiasm. One area where perhaps the Empire’s ATL is fusion power, the first fusion nuclear reactor achieving criticality at the University of Helsinki in 1968. Since then fusion has become the sole nuclear power source of the world, though not the sole power source overall.

History:

The first foundations of what would become one of the world’s greatest powers were laid almost a millennia ago by the King of England, Denmark and Norway; Canute the Great and successfully built upon by his son Harald, Lion of the North. Coming to the throne in 1041 Harald would prove to be an outstanding lawmaker, administrator and scholar, but it is as a warrior king that he is best known. Facing almost immediate challenges to his rule from both inside and outside his realm Harald forged a diverse collection of nations and peoples into a strong unified empire by a combination of martial strength, skilled diplomacy and his own personal magnetism.

The new empire was fortunate to be ruled by a long string of outstanding monarchs who strengthened it internally and expanded it externally. During the 11th century the Empire of the North, as it was becoming to be called, fought a series of wars with the Kingdom of the Franks, taking Normandy in the first and Brittany in the last. The loss of Brittany proved the end for Frankish rule and the lands south of Anjou were annexed by the Empire’s ally the Kingdom of Burgundy.

Throughout the 12th century Norse sailing ships used the warm water ports of southern England as bases from which to explore the Atlantic, eventually discovering and starting to colonise North America.

The prominence of the Empire in Europe was recognised in the first quarter of the 13th century when Edmund IV was made commander of the armies of the Fourth Crusade following the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Ulric. Edmund stripped Ulric’s army of more than 200,000 men down to a hard core of 50,000 fast moving dedicated fighters and in the battle of Smolensk routed the Mongol invasion force. Despite not being able to drive the Mongols from European Russia the Crusaders had permanently checked the eastern horde’s advance westward. Edmund was heaped with honours for his leadership, not least among which was his acclimation as Prince of Novgorod, the previous holder of that title dieing at Smolensk.

By the dawn of the 21st century the Empire of the North was the leading power of a world largely at peace. Though rouge nations and failed states still present a challenge to global security the danger of another world war is remote with the Great Powers preferring to resolve their disputes through the mediation of the World Forum.

However old habits die hard and those nations that can still maintain their armed forces at the peak of capability.
