History: OTL until Victoria. Victoria is born a boy, Alexander I (Victoria as Alexandra Victoria, IIRC, and Alexander is Alexander Victor). Alexander takes an active role in government, and is very good friends with Benjamin Disraeli with whom he shares a close relationship. The Indian Mutiny has had an interesting result. While at first Britain stripped away the EIC, and replaced it with the Raj, Disraeli and Alexander have been toying with the idea of giving India Dominion status in the near future. While distrustful of the Hindu population, they believe that the Mutiny was a result of more than just the rumor mongering of backward heathens, but also of disapproval of East India Company rule, and that India should be gradually given more independence until it can be granted full Dominion status.

In the armed forces, there is some discrepancy with ships in service in OTL versus ATL. Some ships sold for scrap, sunk, or met with other unfortunate accidents have not occured in TTL. Furthermore, the explosion aboard the Ironclad Vengence in 1867 led to the adoption of breech-loading cannons aboard all vessels built from that time on. Thus, the pre-dreadnoughts are all breechloaders, are the armored cruisers and the HMS Captain (in TTL built at spec, and therefore remains stable).

Most British Infantry divisions are equipped with the Martini-Henry rifle. Single-shot .45 caliber, 25" bayonet. Some are being equipped with Martini-Henry Mark II rifles equipped with a slightly smaller .402 caliber and 410 grain.

Crown Colony of New Gotland (North Island, New Zealand)
Population: 1,045,345
Capital: Andorra Nova (Andorra the New)
King: King Alexander I of Andorra (Not ISOTed)
Governor: Henri Forne
Pre-ISOT boundries: North Island, New Zealand
Post-ISOT boundries: North Island, New Zealand
Armed Forces: Several large ships of the Royal Andorran Navy are stationed on the island, and there is a garrison on the island to keep native revolts down.
History: Andorra, in this timeline, collapsed under the odd Co-Principality. As a compromise, a Prince named Henri was put on the Andorran throne. He slowly enlarged the state, and was proclaimed King of France by the Protestants in the French Wars of Religion. In this war, it came away with far more land, though not all of France. It also had a large population.
Nordic explorer Rudolf Scanborg discovered the two islands now called New Gotland while working for the Holy Roman Empire. The Andorran Kingdom purchased the North Island from the Empire, and established a colony there.
Flag: Andorra does not allow New Gotland to have it's own flag. The OTL flag is used, however, it has a crown on the sheild, which is less fancy and does not include the motto.

Country: Empire of All Russias
Capital: Moscow
Pre-ISOT boundaries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan (without Karabakh)
Post-ISOT boundaries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan (without Karabakh)
Population: 90,000,000
Head of State: Peter the Block
History:
After Ivan the Terrible united all Russias and declared himself the first of the Czars his family ruled the Empire under an iron hand. Over the years the Russians fought against the Mongols and won more and more territory. By 1684 Russia defeated the Mongols and they and their allies China split the Mongole Empire. To that time Russia annexed Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
But soon another enemy in the south began to rise. The Saudi Arabs, to that time so powerful that it included area up to Georgia and Azerbaijan urged to war with the Empire. The current Czar, Peter the Great, allied with India and Greece and the alliance won after a 2 year war. Now Russia annexed Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Due to ongoing revolts in Armenia and Karabakh (Azerbaijan) Vladimir the Good, the son of Peter the Great, let those areas becoem sovereign nations.
About 50 years later in 1759 the Ukraine was being attacked by the Austrians. Russia allied with the Ukraine and again they won still in the same year. The Ukraines ties to the Empire began to come closer and closer over the decades and in 1832 the Ukraine became part of the Empire of all Russias.
Czar Ilyich III began to create a 3 class society. The military which included 3% of the population, the aristocrats which included the family of the Czar and his ministers and the workers around 97% of the population. The working class could be split again between peasents, proletarians (town workers especialy industry), the middle class (business owners, doctors, other educated people) and clerics. But because of 40% taxation in the country the "middle class" people were still living at the bordre to poverty. These educated workers were about 5% of the 97% not in the military. Clerics were also around 5% from the 97%. proletarians were about 35% of the not enlisted and the rest of 55% of not enlisted people were farmers.
In January 1873 Czar Ilyich III was assassinated by a bomb in the train he used to come from St. Petersburg back to Moscow. His son Peter V became the new Czar. His first action in power was to kill the assassins by sending them to the guillotine without trying them. His advisors told him this creates a lot of fear in the people and so Peter V began to execute all of his enemies publicly by the guillotine. This is how he got his nickname Peter the Block. He only needed 2 years until all opposition forces were oppressed.

That army is way to huge Lauranthalas. I might give you 1 million men, in all services, support and frontline, tops. My Imperial Russia of ME6.0 had 9-13 million, and that is with current logisitical technology, and it was fighting WWIII.

Furthermore, the Laffer curve shows that there is an ideal tax rate. At 80% tax, you are actually bringing in less than you would at even 70%, or 60%, or 50%. Basically, you have a 20% tax on the country, IIRC my Laffer correctly.

In depth History to follow, but the POD is on July 3, 1863. At the Battle of Gettysburg, General Meade is touring the Union line with his Corps Commanders near Seminary Ridge. When the Army of Northern Virginia opens it's barrage prior to Pickett's charge, a lucky shot kills Meade and General Howard, leaving Hancock in command of the Army of Potomic.

The rest of the battle procedes as OTL, with the Confederates routed after the attack. In our timeline Meade was reluctant to pursue Lee, feeling his army was exhausted. Hancock does not relent. On July 30th, near the swollen banks of the Potomic River, Lee is cornered. In the resulting battle, his army is shattered, and surrounded. After the 6 Days Battle, Lee surrenders his Army on August 6th Lee surrenders the Army of Northren Virginia at Bolivar, Maryland.

The war would still last one more year....

I cut it down to 1/3 of the size. of course you have always less taxincome than the percentage is. with the 80% i skinn close to everything off even fromthe rich (except the very top they arent taxed they receive it)

Your navy is still too huge, and the army is still ginormous. I'll have to talk to MBarry

As for the tax, people won't work. If it is an income tax, they will reduce their work after 50%. That's why Europe is failing. Their income is decreasing as their taxes go up beyond 50%, because people stop working when they keep less than half of what they make......

I guess moderators didn't notice but the Russians have a 20round rifle? the Henry rifle has that many bullets[circa 1862]. And the Mauser, the standard of the service rifles of the last decades of the century only have ten. need to change the service rifle to something more with the era. The Draka will be carrying the R-3, a design that will inspired the Mauser.

Acualtly he might be pretty close. The largest battle ever fought was between Russia and Japan in 1904 I think. Not only did Russia have enough men to start dealing with revolutions and the invasion of Mongolia, but 130,000 Russians died in that battle. A usual detatchment. Remeber that before a certain time period that the US didn't have a standing army and had to call up milltias. I think Russia had full out Conscirption, or maybe it was complusary millitary service for all non-serfs (which at this time made up the majority of the population.) Lars, I'd subtract the serfs from your population first. Besides the biggest armies standing at this time were the US and the CSA.

I'm pretty sure the largest battle ever fought was Stalingrad or the Somme. Over a million died in each battle. However, Germany had the largest army at the time of World War I. The total number of men put in the army during the entire course of the war are as follows.

Russia : 12,000,000
France : 8,410,000
Great Britain : 8,905,000
Italy : 5,615,000
United States : 4,355,000
Japan : 800,000
Romania : 750,000
Serbia : 707,000
Belgium : 267,000
Greece : 230,000
Portugal : 100,000
Montenegro : 50,000
Germany : 11,000,000
Austria-Hungary : 7,800,000
Turkey : 2,850,000
Bulgaria : 1,200,000

Given that Russia at war, over 4 years was able to put out only 3 million more than his proposed STANDING army, I've got to say that its implausible.

I don't need oversea teritory, I don't want oversea territory. I have a personal union with Hanover. Further more, Shchelig and Holstien were bought from the Dutch. Hesse, and Hesse-Nassua are under heavy influence and joined freely. Without Rhine Providence it just wouldn't be the confed of the Rhine. Furthermore Germany's oversea territories just suck. Not to mention how Westphallia is nessary to my South to protect my rear.

Yep.

"Silesia comprises the rich Karvinna coal basin. The most important part of Silesia is, however, its southern tip—Upper Silesia, in Poland (GPs Silesia). One of the largest industrial concentrations of Europe, it has extensive coal and lignite deposits and zinc, lead, iron, and other ores."

Could you just do a run down of your navy, I'll edit it so its all squared away, but the point is that you've got 26,000 men running your battleships. Not bad in and of itself, but you've got to try and do the same thing for the cruisers etc that you still have an astronomical number of.....not to mention half your navy is support....

Draka TL: From Ian's Draka 2 TL

1700s - Dutch establish Cape Colony in South Africa. For reasons I'm too lazy to come up with right now, a full-scale colony of over ten thousand is soon established, rather than an isolated outpost. Could be that the Spanish beat on them more, and there is an exodus of refugees to the various Dutch colonies.

1776 - Outbreak of American revolution. Major Patrick Ferguson invents early breechloading rifle, an effective weapon which is nevertheless somewhat difficult to manufacture and maintain. It's deployment is only substantially more effective than existing technologies in the more elite regiments who are trained well in its use and maintenance.

1779 - France, Spain, Netherlands declare war on Great Britain.

1782 - British naval victories in Caribbean, occupation of Haiti and Trinidad.

1783 - Second Peace of Paris. Britain gains possession of Dutch Cape Colony.

1783 - Loyalty Acts passed by British parliament. Cape is renamed the Crown Colony of Drakia, all loyalists are offered land grants in various British colonies. As an incentive to shore up control of the Cape colony, free transport is offered to Drakia.

1782-84 - First Loyalist refugees begin to arrive, supplemented by an enlarged British Army garrison. Tens of thousands of loyalists and their families arrive, creating tension with the approximately forty thousand Dutch Afrikaaners. Within a few years, the population is roughly half dutch, half immigrant (mostly American loyalists), and early Drakian society absorbs a notable Dutch-Afrikaaner component.

1784 - Founding of Durban and Liverpool. Volcanic eruptions devastate Iceland, and twenty thousand Icelanders receive asymlum in the British Empire. Most head to British North America or the US, but seven thousand are given free passage to Drakia as part of an ongoing British effort to cement control of Cape Horn.

1786 - Founding of York (Pretoria, South Africa). Gold discovered in Whiteridge, substantial mineral exploration begins in Drakia.

1788 - Gold discovered in the Transvaal, diamonds discovered in the northern Interior. The new mineral boom renews immigration, and stimulates the Drakian economy substantially. Within several years, Drakia moves from an agrarian colony and outpost of a hundred thousand, to a bustling, rapidly growing mining center. First steam engines imported.

1790 - Drakian Legislative Assembly passes Indentured Labor and Master and Servant acts, regulating slavery in the colony as a method of exploiting the native populace conquered during the constant expansion of Drakian fronteirs.

1790-95 - Rapid growth of economy and population, export trades established. Growth of Drakian shipping, expansion of several British shipbuilding concerns to Drakia. Zanzibar and Aden seized. Free population exceeds 150,000, slave population nears 500,000. Significant expansion of the slave trade, beginnings of the formation of a slave-based plantation and mining society. There is a substantial surplus of slaves, and Drakia becomes a major exporter, to the discomfort of some Drakians and many British.

1793 - Conquest of Northmark (Rhodesia/Zimbabwe) by Drakian militias underway. A tradition of armed landholder militias and mercenary units arises, contributing more to the expansion of the colony than the more conservatively deployed British Army.

1793 - Outbreak of French Revolutionary Wars.

1794-97 - French population of Santo Domingo/Haiti flees before a slave revolt, ten thousand arrive in Drakia. A scattering of Royalists from France follow, attracted to the isolation and prosperity of the colony.

1797 - The massive and loosely regulated expansion of slavery contributes to several bloody slave revolts. Slave Cold grants all freemen power of life and death over slaves, Militia Act establishes substantial citizen militias and reserve service. First Janissary Legion is soon recruited, though it is over a decade before experience in managing and recruiting them allows the Janissaries to be effective, stable fighting forces.

1799 - British African Mining Company founded, soon given a monopoly on large-scale mining. Richard Trevithick soon arrives from Cornwall, appointed to the position of Inspector-General of Steam Engines.

1800 - Free population reaches 250,000. First local industries started as the wars render imports uncertain, cotton becomes a major crop. Conquest of Egypt, French West Africa by British Army forces supported by the Drakian Expeditionary Force, the brainchild of the Drakian governer who mounts an expedition at substantial expense, convincing the British to lend armed support. He is later granted governorship of the Crown Colony of Egypt, encompassing most of old French North Africa.

1805 - High-pressure steam engine perfected by Trevithick, construction of first railway line begins three years later.

1807 - Ottoman Empire declares war on Britain following British refusal to evacuate Egypt. Britain seizes Cyprus, Tunisia.

1812 - Ill-prepared American forces invade British North America, are held off in Upper Canada and Quebec, and eventually defeated.

1815-16 - Congress of Vienna confirms Southern Africa and Egypt as British. Many British veterans and Napoleonic refugees immigrate to Africa. Egypt established as a British possession (including Cyprus and areas of French West Africa).

1820-30 - Rapid growth of export agriculture and transport. Substantial anti-slavery sentiment arises in Britain, produces tension with Drakia and defiant anti-bourgeois sentiment in the colony. Increasing restrictions on slavery in many parts of the Empire, many slaveholders immigrate to Drakia. Drakia becomes elided to Draka in popular usage. The 1826 slavery acts are narrowly defeated under strong pressure from Drakia, causing a backlash against the colony in popular opinion.

1832 - Slave trade banned in the British Empire despite Drakian protests, major impact on Drakian slave economy. British attempts to enforce this meet with resistance. Rise of the concept of the indentured serf as a method of abiding by the letter, but not the spirit, of the law. Antislavery movements in Britain and elsewhere begin widely publicizing the Drakian treatment of slaves and "serfs", notable for its systematic brutality

1834 - Passage of the Reform Act by British Parliament, abolishing outright slavery and mandating humane treatment of bondservants. Drakian animosity sparked, also extends to issues of mineral wealth being drained from the colony to little direct local profit. Clashes between Drakian militias and British forces over enforcement of the act lead to slaveholder revolts.

1835-36 - The Draka Rebellion begins, eventually succeeds after substantial mobilization of the local populace overcomes slowly-reinforced British forces. The rebels rename York to Archona, after the head of the new government. The Republic of Draka is formed, a slavery-promoting, militaristic authoritarianism with many of what would today be called fascist tendencies. Despite this, sentiment in much of the US is decidedly pro-Draka. Within a short period, the first real Draka navy arises to protect shipping, though Britain is largely successful in restricting the slave trade.

1840-50 - Draka forces begin large-scale conquest of Central Africa, 20% of the population mobilized for years on end, women's auxiliaries gain in popularity. Difficulties with disease in the central jungles prove prohibitive to settlement, which proceeds slowly. Organized collection and repression of slaves under the new system leads to large-scale expansion of slavery, now legally referred to as serfdom. The Republic of Draka is geographically and politically isolated, but gains industrial self- sufficiency and begins organized encouragement of immigration and settlement of the fronteir areas under a system of land grants to plantations. Rise of the two-part Draka society (self-sustaining fronteir plantations and monopolistic industrial Combines), as well as the entrenchment of universal military service.

1852-53 - Mexican-American war, annexation of all Mexico forced by Young America faction. All of British North America joined as the Dominion of Canada, British presence in Canada and the Crown Colony of Egypt increased in response to American and Drakian activity (the continuing difficulties in settlement of Central Africa, despite great effort, and the social drive to ownership of plantations, combine to support various military expeditions and adventurism in West Africa).

1854 - Cuba, Phillipines, Hawaii annexed by United States, attempt by Southern adventurers to conquer Central America fails.

1859-63 - American Civil War. Republic of Draka provides large-scale "clandestine" (preferential sales of large amounts of arms) aid to Confederacy. Combined with simmering British popular oppostion against slavery from the days of the Draka Rebellion, Britain is soon swayed to heavily pro-Union sentiment. Following the Emancipation Acts in 1862, and clashes with Draka ships at sea, the British Empire joins the war against the Confederacy and the Royal Navy establishes an effective blockade against Draka supplies. American/British relations reach a new height, their best since the Revolution. Draka industry, in support of the Confederacy, gains its first experience with large-scale war industry. Sale of repeating rifles, gatling guns, steam warships to the Confederacy. Experimentation with steam-powered warcars (not particularly effective). Union casualties exceed 500,000, and sentiment in the Republic waffles on the edge of overt assistance to the Confederacy, but following British intervention and the abandonment of the pro-Confedaracy French position, the Domination is forced to back down to avoid being drawn into a losing battle.

1860-70 - Germany united, mosquito vector of malaria established. Large scale efforts to combat the tsetse fly in central Africa finally begin to achieve real success, expansion of Draka settlement northward begins to catch up with military conquests. Concerted efforts to bypass the disease-breeding jungles of Central Africa underway due to strategic desires for expansion into Northern Africa. 300,000 Confederate refugees welcomed to Draka under a deliberate emigration program, more refugees arrive during the period of Reconstruction in the southern US. Dominion of Australia unites Australia, New Zealand.

Infantry Weapons of the Free Republic of Draka circa 1870.
From excellent website Small Arms from the Domination

The R-3 brass cartridge bolt-action rifle:
After the adoption of the Telliard–Pauly rifle, the Drakans made only minor improvements in the next 25 years. The R-2 was certainly superior to the British Army's weapons during the Draka Rebellion of 1834–36, but it wasn't the only advantage the Drakans had. However, there are many tales of Army units killed nearly to a man by the longer-ranged R-2 in the hands of the Militia or Janissaries during this time.
Once the British Empire recognized the Free Republic of Draka (FRD), and internal consolidation was completed, the Drakans again found themselves in need of local sources of improved weapons. The British officially accepted the accomplishment of the Draka Rebellion, but they spent much of the next decade building the Suez Canal and arranging boycotts to punish the FRD. These external conditions, and a need for more firepower to suppress internal unrest, led to further innovation in small arms.
The next technical breakthrough proceeded from the development in the 1840s of techniques for cheap mass-production of seamless brass tubing. This was the result of improvements in automotive steam engines, but had a military application. East and Central Africa were being conquered, and the hot wet climate was having unfortunate effects on the permeable cartridge of the R-2. Also, attempts to design a workable repeating rifle had broken down on the fragility of the R-2's ammunition, and the burgeoning internal security needs were becoming acute. A drawn-brass cartridge was perfected in 1847, and the opportunity was taken to further reduce the caliber of the weapon. The feed mechanism was a steel box beneath the bolt, holding eight rounds and with a Z-shaped spring attached to a riser plate beneath the ammunition. Moving forward, the bolt "stripped" a round out of the lips of the magazine and chambered it. After firing, the bolt was turned, grasping the cartridge with a wedge-shaped extractor on the bolt face and withdrawn. As the bolt withdrew, so did the empty cartridge case, striking a milled "shoulder" and being flung out of the rifle. With the bolt left back, the magazine was exposed and could be reloaded, initially with individual rounds and later with clips of four, and finally eight, rounds in a beveled zinc strip holder. The new R-3's performance was as follows:
R-3 Rifle
Caliber: 10.16 mm (.40 inch)
Weight: 4.3 kg
Range: 900 m effective, 1350 maximum
Rate of Fire: 10–12 rounds per minute
Feed System: Fixed box, 8 rounds
Operation: Turn-bolt
The R-3 proved its worth both in the conquest of the remainder of "unclaimed" Africa, primarily Sudan and Ethiopia, and the numerous incidents of unrest that it quelled in the hands of the Security Directorate. With the R-3, the black-powder rifle had reached the ultimate refinement. The disposable cartridge helped to reduce the heating problems endemic to earlier types, removed much of the fouling from the chamber of the rifle, and was also virtually unaffected by water. The only remaining serious problems were those inherent in the black-powder propellant: fouling of the barrel, the required frequent cleaning (difficult in the heat of battle), and the large output of smoke which disclosed the firer's position and could blanket an entire battlefield. Further improvements in firepower would require advances from two separate portions of the Industrial Revolution: advanced chemistry and the repeatable (and interchangeable) action of precision machinery.
Machine Guns: The Gatling Gun
Frederick James Gatling (b. 1818, Maney's Neck, North Carolina; d. 1905, Archona, Archona Province) was a Southern-born inventor who began producing at an early age. His first career was in the field of agricultural machinery; his seed drills were ingenious and widely used. His second began in the late 1840s, when he developed the first version of the ten-barreled crank-operated machine-gun that later made his name famous. Gatling failed to interest the American government in his invention; the head of the Bureau of Ordnance was interested in more accurate weapons rather than ones that sprayed large numbers of bullets. So Gatling went to London in the spring of 1850 to test the European waters. He found little interest there too, but happened to meet (in a City chop-house) a junior member of the Drakan embassy, Marius de Witt, who had worked in the Naysmith Machine Tool Combine's design section in Diskarapur.
De Witt interested his superiors in Gatling's designs, and Frederick was encouraged to move to Diskarapur. There, in cooperation with the engineers from the Naysmith and Ferrous Metals Combines, he quickly perfected his designs. The new metallic cartridge proved ideal for this use, and a reliable weapon with a rate of fire in excess of 600 rounds per minute was quickly produced. General issue to the Drakan armed forces began in 1855, and Gatling guns were used with devastating effect in quelling several serf revolts. However, the Gatling was definitely a "crew-served" weapon comparable to small field artillery, and improvements in more portable (i.e. small arms) sources of firepower were still needed.
Pistols and the Le Matt Model 1870
At this point, a digression from the "long" rifle to the shorter pistol form is in order. While the Ferguson, R-2 and R-3 were important and useful long-range weapons for the individual, there were also shorter-range needs. The bayonet and saber mentioned earlier fulfilled the hand-to-hand roles, but there was a middle ground as well. Taking a cue from pirates of the high seas and officers of European armies, many freemen in the Drakian Militia, and later all the Drakan Citizens, carried sidearms in the field. These initially were single-shot black powder pistols, then double-barreled. When the revolver was developed by Francois Telliard and refined by others, the Drakans were among the first to seize upon it for military and internal security issue.
One noteworthy sidearm indigenous to Draka dates from just after the Slaver Exodus, inspired by the chaos that occurred in the port of New Orleans. The primary inventor, Dr. Jean-Claude Le Matt, fled New Orleans in the last Draka ship after news circulated that he had treated some wounded "slavers", and his house was burned by a mob of frustrated poor whites. He lost several family members in the escape, which included the use of a concealed shotgun. He ended up in the sugar country near Virconium, and devoted himself to developing a combination pistol and single-shot shotgun weapon as a sort of revenge. In its final form (the Model 1870), it had a swing-out cylinder, and was the last black powder sidearm authorized for regular use by Drakans. Note that the word "issue" wasn't used; these weapons were contracted for directly with Le Matt or one of his agents, and available with a variety of levels of decoration. Some that went into battle with less-affluent Citizens were "no frills", but most were works of deadly functional art in engraved steel, turquoise and ivory. Most of those that exist today are highly prized Drakan family heirlooms that are lovingly maintained; there were at least two duels fought using Model 1870s in the past decade.
The revolver portion of the Le Matt Revolver initially fulfilled a Drakan standing requirement for a multi-shot cavalry sidearm. However, as Le Matt wasn't an experienced gunsmith, just a gifted amateur, the caliber of the first model was .36 (9.14 mm), not one of the standard ones (.35 or .40) already used by the Draka. Le Matt was prevailed upon to alter the weapon's bore to .40, an existing rifle caliber, even though accuracy suffered from using ammunition designed for a much longer barrel. It was at this juncture that he thought to use the "waste" space in the center of the revolver's cylinder, and installed the single-shot buckshot barrel that made the weapon unique. In the heat of battle, men able to take advantage of this area effect often found it caused more casualties than the revolver's six to nine (depending on model) shots. While making the weapon even more mechanically complex, this unexpected (to the ignorant) capability gave the bearers of the Le Matt a very short range "equalizer" that could come in extremely handy in the confused melee of a cavalry action.
During the evolution of Le Matt's design, the caliber of both the revolver and shotgun changed several times, as did the number of shots. Important innovations such as a thumb lever to switch from revolver to shotgun, and a better retention mechanism for the loading rod, also had a checkered history. However, it is with the Model 1870 that Le Matt finally achieved the effectiveness he had been searching for:
Le Matt Revolver, model 1870
Caliber: 12.12 mm (.477) centerfire, 16.26 mm (.64) shotgun
Weight: 1.6 kg
Range: 25m effective, 40 maximum
Rate of Fire: 15–25 rounds per minute (revolver)
Feed System: 6 round revolver, single buckshot cartridge
Operation: Swing-out cylinder

Kingdom of Karelia
Lands ISOTed: Karelia, Finland, Kola Peninsula, Aland Islands
Lands not ISOTed: All other islands in the Baltic, Estonia, Java, Sumatra, Koopenhamina (Copenhagen), Ingria
King: Vaino II, King of Karelia and of Estonia, Royal Duke of Finland and of Aland, Conquerer of Swedes and of Danes
Capital: Viipuri
Armed Forces: Later
History:
The Karelian Tribes managed to unite under a common leader to fight off both the Swedes and the Novgorodian Rus. When Sweden was forced into the Kalmar Union with Denmark-Norway, Karelia took advantage of the political chaos within the Union to attack it. The armies of Karelia managed to crush those of the Union. Karelia came away with all of Finland, Estonia, and all of the islands in the Baltic (other than those integral to Denmark, and even Bornholm was taken from there), and the Kalmar Union broke apart before it even really began, with even Norway escaping Danish dominance.
Karelia then had to face off with the power of Novgorod. After the Ingrian War, however, Novgorod's power was completely broken, and the Prince of Novogord was forced to become a vassal of the King of Karelia. This, oddly enough, secured it's independence from Muscovy.
In the 1500s, Denmark, which had expanded its lands to include Schleswig, Holstein, and Pomerania, as well as it's traditional lands (including Scania), decided to regain some of its lost islands. The Dano-Karelian War of 1546-1564 was a long, harsh battle between powerful forces. Finally, Norwegian entrance in the war resulted in the Treaty of Helsinki. This treaty gave Copenhagen, and the land on the other side of the Oresund. The capital of Denmark was moved to Roskilde.
Karelia was now a major power, and recognized as such. It dominated the Baltics, and would do so for almost four hundred years afterward. These 400 years were not peaceful. There was a War with Sweden (1623-1645) which resulted in a loss of northern Finland, though the Second Karelo-Swedish War/War of Finland (1662-1672) resulted in Sweden losing it again. Denmark tried to seize Copenhagen in the Copenhagen War (1698-1675) which resulted in the deportation of the Danish population of the Oresund area, and the replacement of them with Karelians, and the renaming of the city to the Karelian name "Koopenhamina". The 1700s were a bit more peaceful, however, in 1768 two claimants came up for the throne. The Karelian Civil War only ended in 1800, with Novgorod having broken free.
In the 1800s, the Karelian East India Company was formed to take advantage of trade with India. The compant was forced out of India by the English, however, and moved on to the islands, eventually carving out an 'exclusive trade zone' consisting of Java and Sumatra. These became a formal colony in 1858.
Flag: Green-Black-Green, with a Karelian Bear in the center. The naval flag is a green cross, a green saltire, all on black.

History: With the aid of Fredrick the Great, Maria Theresa I was able to successfully fight her way to the throne, and be crowned Empress. Without ever loosing Silesia, her dream was for Austria to colonize the Middle East. During her reign, many succesful acts made the central government much more larger. Provincial legislatures were placed in Naples, the Netherlands, Bohemia, and Hungary. Maria Theresa I's reign went on much as it did in ours.

Joseph II's reign also close to same, except he has a son by his second wife, Archduke Joseph. Joseph II dies three years later, and his mother rules as Regent until she dies when Joseph IV is 17. He marries an Italian princess at 18, and they have a son, Archduke Rudolph, when he is 20. In 1817, Austria established the Crown Colony of Austrian South Arabia, conquering Muskat & Oman, and setteling the Yemen Coast. The Empress went on to give birth to 10 other children.

Rudolph succeded to the throne as Rudolph II in 1830. He also marries an Italian princess, who gives him one son. Emperor Rudolph II reign only 2 years before mysteriously dieing from unknown causes. His 2 yea old son becomes Joseph IV with Empress Anna Guisepenia as Regent. Joseph takes the throne in 1857, and his 10 year old daughter, Maria Theresa, is made heiress-presumptive. His wife gives birth to four more daughters: Maria Caroline, Maria Antonia, Maria Anna, and Maria Adelaide. While fighting a war with the Poles, Jospeh IV is killed in Battle in 1860. His wife, Empress Leopoldina, rules as regent for her daughter for 4 years, and Maria Theresa II takes the throne in her own right in 1864. Maria Theresa II went on to further centralize the government into Vienna, and a two more large cities were established in Austrian South Arabia. She married Prince Carlos of Spain in 1865, and gave birth to a daughter, Maria Theresa. She went on to give birth to a set of fraternal twins, Joseph and Caroline, who died in infancy. Three sons, Leopold, Francis, and Ferdinand, all who died under the age of 3, and 2 daughters, Maria Johanna and Maria Fransica, the elder of which also died. When her husband died in 1882, she went mad, and Archduchess Maria Theresa was made Regent.

Maria Theresa II died in 1883, and her daughter succeded her as Maria Theresa III. According to Hasburg Succession, Maria Theresa III cannot marry a cousin who is her 1st to 4th. But she must marry a Habsburg. She is currently unmarried.

Imperial Austrian Navy:

By the beginning of the 19th century, the old rivalry between Britain and France had been replaced by a new threat from the newly united states of Imperial Prussia, and the ever growing Austrian Empire. Under the Kaiser, and the Austrian Emperor, Prussia and Austria and had grown in their status' and wealth and was looking to challenge the British empire and its colonies.

The rapid industrialization of Prussian and Austrian economies had lead to a trading rivalry between Prussia, Austria, and Great Britain. With the Prussian and Austrian economies outstripping that of Great Britain, Imperial Prussian Austria had the potential to eventually equal or be greater than, the maritime power of Great Britain.

This challenge to the British sea power was not left unchallenged as Great Britain also expanded its sea power. By the 1860's, Great Britain, Prussia, and Austria had large powerful surface fleets and submarine fleets which were destined for conflict.

In general terms, the British had an older fleet, lesser in numbers than the Austrian, whilst the German fleet was more modern with some technological advantages. However the Austrian was larger and most modern, due to many smuggled plans from London and Berlin into Vienna.

Julian Republic
Population: 145,567 (65% Catholic, 35% Pagan)
Capital: Urbs Julius
Language: Julian Latin
Head of State: Consul Tarrius Milites
Armed Forces: Defense is the priority of Portugal. There is a police force of 100 on the island, and three Portuguese Battleships: The Avis, The Joao II, and The Braganza.
History:
The Republic Society was formed in the Roman Empire during the reign of Trajan. The Society called for a return to the Roman Republic, and became popular in the upper echelons of Roman Society. Trajan feared them, and "gratefully" "offered" them the chance to form a Roman Colony in Mauretania. However, their ship blows off course, and they end up on the Azores, where they build the city of Julius, in honor of the leader of the Society.
The Julian Republic quickly stagnated into a slow cycle of expansion and assimilation of the natives, until Portuguese Contact. The Portuguese didn't see the islands as too useful, but seized some of the smaller islands for a refueling station.
When the Portuguese were taken over by the Spanish, the Spanish took over the whole islands, and forcibly converted many to Catholicism. The Spanish were harsh rulers, and to gain the support of the people, the first Braganza rulers of Portugal granted the Julian Republic mostly independence, "gratefully" taking over defense for them. The Julian Republic remains a de facto Portuguese territory, but is theoretically independent, with it's own culture and language. Surprisingly, the 35% Pagan population of the islands, oppresed brutallly under Spanish rule, are allowed to practice their religion, though converts to Paganism are banned and not recognized as such, and the Consul must be a Christian.
Flag: Green-White-Green, with SP QJ, and in the space between the letters, a large Roman Eagle holding fasces.

Thus I will have

Skandistan (big one)
Papal States (small one) --> why not does it appear on the map?

Kingdom of Armenia-Trebizond
Monarch: His Royal Highness, Alexander III, King of Armenia, Emperor of Trebizond, Grand Duke of Yerevan, of Nakhichevan, Khan of Karabakh, of Zangezur
Capital: Tigranocerta is being rebuilt by nationalists, Trebizond is currently used, Yerevan is an important city, as are Stepanakert and Ani.
Armed Forces: Later
Population: 2,345,456, 62% Aremenian, 18% Pontic Greek, 15% Turkish, 5% Other
History:
The Armenian Kingdom's history is somewhat vague in character, but it's origins trace to the falling Mongol Empire. Several Khanates were formed out of Armenian Anatolia, including Zangezur and Karabakh. It was the Khan of Zangezur who began a period of Armenian expansion, conquering the Khanate of Karabakh and expanding into the lands ruled by Turks, as the Ottoman Empire expanded from it's base in the west. After seizing land south of the Greek Empire of Trebizond in 1567, the Khan of Zangezur-Karabakh took the title "King of Armenia". This immediately propelled him into conflict with the Khan of Yerevan, who had taken it upon himself to make himself "Grand Duke" for some reason. The superior and larger Armenian forces easily took his territory, and his title in 1580.
In 1590, King Geyches II the Great of Armenia left the Kingdom to his son, Alexander I. In Alexander I's reign, the last of the Trapezuntine Emperors died. Alexander happened to be the closest heir, and the Empire, a strip of land on the Black Sea including the wealthy city of Trebizond. Alexander made his capital in Trebizond.
Since then, the Kingdom of Armenia-Trebizond, as it became called, mostly kept the same borders, and had relatively good relations with the Turkish Ottomans. For a time it acquired the Crimean Peninsula, though later it lost it to the Ottomans, who eventually had to cede it to Russia. And in 1870, Armenia-Trebizond dissapeared...
Flag: Red-Green-Blue Tricolor. Origins unknown.

If the ISOT is 1886 I guess this is the weapons the Draka will have.

From same page than last Draka entry.

Smokeless Powder and the R-4a
Mining had always been an important part of the Drakan economy, and when the Swede Alfred Huskqvist (b. 1820, Uppsala, d. 1890, Kenia Province) \l "footnote5" perfected his method of stabilizing nitroglycerin by absorption, it was quickly adopted as the main explosive in the mines of the FRD. Dynamite (as the new compound was called) exploded far too readily to be used as a propellant, but proved to be very suitable as a bursting-charge in artillery shells. After settling in the FRD, Huskqvist developed a mixture of nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose that could be extruded into various shapes, and which gave a much more controlled "burn" than black powder. The new compound was patented in 1872, and known variously as "cordite" (from the string-shaped pieces initially used), "white powder" (from its color) and, usually, "smokeless" powder. The War Directorate immediately noted the superiority of the new propellant: less fouling to build up in the chamber and barrel, much less smoke to give away the rifleman's position, higher velocity, and flatter trajectory. At first, double-base smokeless powder was substituted for the original 250-grain load of compressed black powder used in the R-3. However, this meant the breech had to be strengthened to handle the higher pressures, and the sights redesigned for longer ranges. What resulted was a modified R-3 rifle that was entered into a testing program as the R-X-4; this was intended to be a modification kit to the R-3.

Performance was as follows:

R-X-4 Rifle
Caliber: 10.16 mm (.40 inch)
Weight: 4.4 kg
Range: 1350 m effective, 2000 maximum
Rate of Fire: 10–12 rounds per minute (reloaded)
Feed System: Fixed box, 8 rounds
Operation: Turn-bolt

However, there were serious problems, and the R-X-4 was withdrawn from testing before ever being issued. Only a few were ever produced, and none issued to field units; the design museum at the Technological Institute of Archona is the only location where these can be found in the present day. Recoil was excessive, and the velocity so high that the bullet tended to melt in the barrel, lining it with smears of lead. The rifling also tended to "strip" the exterior of the bullet.

This failure was taken as an opportunity to redesign the service rifle from the ground up. A smaller caliber was used, since it was obvious that the higher velocity reduced the need for a large bullet to achieve severe wounds. The shape of the bullet was redesigned with a "boat-tail" to reduce drag, which extended range even further. The round itself was made of lead swaged into a jacket of harder alloy, except for the nose, which was left bare to expand inside the target. And the feed mechanism was altered to a detachable clip with 10 rounds, which made reloading easier under battlefield conditions. Designated R-X-4a while under development, this weapon entered service as the R-4a.
R-4a Rifle
Caliber: 7.5 x 60 mm
Weight: 4.1 kg
Range: 1825 m effective, 2275 maximum
Rate of Fire: 12–14 rounds per minute (reloaded)
Feed System: Detachable box, 10 rounds
Operation: Turn-bolt

The R-4a was standard issue for the Drakan armed forces until 1906, with the advantages of simplicity, light weight, rugged construction, and a very hard-hitting round. While the only wartime use was by Citizens during the final conquest of Ethiopia, it served well. The R-4a had several imitators in Europe, e.g. the German Mausers of 1888 and 1898.

Automatic and Self-Loading Weapons
While the Gatling gave excellent service, it was inevitably large, bulky, heavy, and usually mounted on a modified field-gun carriage or steel tripod. In vehicle mounts with an exterior power source, the very high rate of fire and reliability made it nearly ideal, but for infantry service it had severe limitations.
After the adoption of smokeless powder, the Drakan Gatlings were easily modified to fire the new round, but it was obvious that new possibilities were opened by the new propellant — especially by its reduced waste residue and the more efficient "long push" that its slower burn gave as compared to black powder.
The first new application was in a heavier weapon, a 25 mm automatic cannon designed for armored-vehicle use and as an antiairship defense. Developed by Charles Manson of the Army Technical Section in 1882–86, it used a form of blowback operation, combined with advanced primer ignition. The breechblock was flanked by two metal arms, themselves attached to a strong coil spring in a sheath around the lower barrel of the weapon. When released, the block was pulled forward by the spring, stripping a shell out of the metal-link feed belt and firing it slightly before reaching the full-forward position. The recoil force thus had to stop the forward inertia of the breech, then move it backward against the mass of the breechblock, the two flanking arms, and the force of the coil spring

notes.

Armored cars are steam powered with terrible wheels and worse suspension systems if at all. Only could be used on the roads so a paved highway or they will break down as fast as you can see uncle. And not that many either way. Same with airships. flimsy things used for recon and machine gunnning rebel serfs.

Draka land forces

500,000 Citizen Defense Force
From those 100,000 are part of the Women Auxiliary Corps and 10,000 are part of the the Drakian Navy and Special Weapons Corps

Rest of Citizen Force is organized as mounted rifles in regiments. But they also fill the officers slots in the Janissaires units and manned the artillery units. Artillery regiments include batteries of Gatling guns for support. The doctrine is to use horses for rapid deployment and fight as infantry. The Citizens use tactics that IOTL were called Boer Tactics during the German Imperial Army 1902 War Games. So in reality of the 500,000 total you maybe have 100,000 real fighting pure Draka units not counting Artillery.

700,000 Janissaires

All of them organized as infantry with Draka officers. Artillery support is given by Drakian units. Well organized and also trained in "Boer Tactics."

Drakian Navy
Drakian Free State is a land power and only have enough ships to protect their coastline. :D
Only 4 predreadnaughts made the trip to Mosaic Earth. Eerily similar to Condotierro ones in characteristics. :p

6 heavy cruisers: also similar to Condi's characteristics and 65 ships of smaller size.

Special Weapons Corps

The grand name given to the 25 airships in service and the 225 steam armored cars. Neither is what you called a war winning weapon.

OOC: So I got lazy with the Navy. Hope is OK. :D

Population: 23,000,000
History: The history of "Spain" begins with the marriage of Prince D. Joao II of Portugal with Isabel of Castile. After this union, the Reino Unido was quickly established as a permanent union of the two nations. Spain allied with Aragon against the moors, and got half of their territory. The Aragonese later made a similar union as the Portugal-Castile one, except with Navarra. After Christopher Colombus' failure to convince Ferdinand of Aragon of his voyage, he convinces Isabel in 1494. The explorer finds the Caribbean islands in much the same way as OTL, and Spain's Empire expands similarly. However, now it is also united with Portugal's Brazil, since Aragon loses its claimed territories in a war with Spain in 1532. Spain's glory increases greatly, except without the European territories in OTL, and more of a focus on overseas. However, after the failed invasion of Britain in 1595, Spain begins to stagnate. Little by little, its once large Asian and African territories are conquered by the rising powers of England and France. The line established by the first two monarchs lasts to this day, as the oldest surviving European line. Revolution in South America begins in 1807, while Spain is being invaded by the French-Aragonese alliance in an attempt to unite the Peninsula. Spain fails to hold on to Mexico, La Plata, Gran Colombia, Chile, and Peru, although Brazil remains loyal, due to a Spanish restructuring of their colonial system, making it more similar to Britain's. Brazil is renamed the Crown of Brazil, and becomes an equal in the Reino Unido. The rest of the territories are grouped into the Dominion of Spanish West Africa, the Dominion of Spanish East Africa, and the Dominion of the West Indies. By 1830, Spain has recovered from the loss of many of it's American territories, and by 1860 is becoming a major power again, with a navy about half of Britain's. It embraces industrialization in Iberia, but not in Africa and northern Brazil. It also began embracing a more parliamentary form of government, although the King still has considerable power.
Armed Forces: 450,000 troops, 30,000 Cavalry, 2000 cannons
Navy: 53 Frigates, 13 Iron clads
Head of State/Government: King Carlos VI, Parliamentary monarchy with considerable Royal power. Ability to declare war shared between the King and Parliament.

Post-ISOT boundaries: Baja California Norte, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa

Population: Approx.1,250,000. (1882 Census) 85% Mexican, 15% French

History:
POD: during the aftermath of the US-Mexican war, the governors of the states of Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas met and decided to Secede from the corpse of Mexico. Ambassadors were sent to the US to ask for help with freeing themselves from Mexico, with a promise of giving the land of OTL Gadsden purchase. The US government agreed, and after a two year war the Republic of the Rio Grande gained their freedom, which was officially signed on August 11th, 1850. In other northern Mexican states, such as Sonora, there was a sentiment of anti-Government feeling, and revolts spread across the area. That’s where Count Gaston Raousset-Boulbon comes in. he arrived in California (San Francisco) on August 22, 1850, just in a moment when US laws segregate the foreign people to explode the California richness.
Gaston Raousset-Boulbon was born in Avignon, France on December 2, 1817, belonging to one of the most notable families in the Provenze. After his father's death, Raousset-Boulbon moved to Paris, then to Algeria. He made in Algeria a prosperous life, When the 1848 revolution broke off, falling in bankruptcy. He back to France taking the Republic side. He founded the daily La Liberté. Raousset-Boulbon did not found favour neither among the royalist nor the republicans, then impoverished and ruined in all aspects, Raousset-Boulbon embarked in 1850 the steamship L'Avon towards California via Panama. He arrived Jamaica where embarked the steamship Dee taking him to Chagré, Panama where landed on July 6, 1850. Finally the steamship Ecuador drove him to San Francisco, California, arriving on August 22, 1850. His flee coincided to the move of thousands of French-people who looked for both: go out from the war in their country and find well-being in California.
As many non-US people Raousset-Boulbon disappointed for both, the margination by US authorities and laws, and the lack of gold. Then he thought the California gold should extend towards the Mexican State of Sonora. At this time, after the loss of further Northern states, Mexico was in a state of collapse. Bandits roamed the countryside, revolutionaries spread revolts. It was a piece of land waiting to be exploited. Raousset-Boulbon made his first trip to Mexico in February 1852. Once in Mexico City, he met Consul André Levasseur who introduced him to investors of a company called La Restauradora whose mayoritary partner was Jecker, Torre and Co. On April 7, 1852, Raousset-Boulbon singed a contract with La Restauradora on which he is appointed jointly with an "agent" (who met in San Francisco) to explore all places in northern Sonora, discover mines and good, and take possession of them.
The Count returned to San Francisco, once got the permission, and recruited a company of about 270 men, in addition to weapons and food. On May 19, 1852, he left San Francisco, on the Archival Gracie to arrive Guaymas, Sonora, the first day of July, under a great and spectacular welcome provided by the Guaymas people and Sonora authorities.
General Blanco was appointed to supervise the French expedition, but was frequently burled by Raousset-Boulbon, who justified him-self saying he tried to fulfil the contract terms, while General Blanco just kept passive. The expedition moved to Hermosillo (formerly Pític), then to Ures, and so other places until get Arispe (Arizpe). Promising the people of Sonora wealth and freedom and liberty from their oppressors in the south, the Sonorans rallied to his cause, and the local bandits joined his expedition force. By the 2nd anniversary of Rio Grandian independence Sonora, Lower California and nearly all of Sinaloa was under Raousset-Boulbon forces or allied bandits. The Mexican army, suffering desertions and poor command was no force for the better equipped army under Blanco, and terms of surrender were worked between the Mexican Government and Raousset-Boulbon. Raousset-Boulbon would receive all of Sonora, Lower California and Sinaloa. On November 14th 1852 Raousset-Boulbon declared the Republic of Sonora, with himself as its leader. The Bandits who allied themselves with the Frenchman were awarded land in Baja Norte and Sinaloa, and were used to ‘clean out’ the Indians who were terrorizing the outlying countryside.

Devastated by a series of lost wars and secessions, the central Mexican government finally collapsed as Bandit warlords took over areas of the countryside, and secessionist movements sprung up in areas such as the Yucatan, which was taken over by a local warlord. Mexico was no longer a single political entity.
Lured by hopes of gold like in California, thousands of French migrated to Sonora, and a smaller group of Americans migrated. There wasn’t the same gold in Sonora as in California, but the French stayed, mostly in Sonora-proper, in towns like Hermosillo and the booming port town of Guaymas, but others went out into the countryside and established silver mines, where the Sonorans worked in poor conditions. The silver and some cotton exported gave a significant economic boost, and it was so great that a railroad was built from Guaymas to Hermosillo, and then gradually expanded outwards into the countryside.
When Raousset-Boulbon, the first President of the Republic of Sonora, died in 1875 his country was very different to the dusty desert states he conquered 25 years ago. Silver and iron mining was brining in money, and during the American Civil war Sonora had experienced a brief economic boom when the American cotton supply was cut off by the Union blockade. Railways snaked across the country; factories sprawled on the eastern Gulf coast, and the University at Hermosillo was even half decent by European standards. The country still had problems though, as Mexicans fleeing the warlords poured into the country in varying numbers. Indians were still a problem in the north, occasionally raiding cattle ranches. There was social stratification between the French ruling elite and the Mexican poor, and slums were developing in the bigger, industrial cities. The French still held nearly all of the top administrative positions, but some native Sonorans, fluent in French were climbing the social ladder. With Raousset-Boulbon dead, an election was held, and the son of General Blanco, Paul Blanco was elected as president.
Over the 1870’s there was a slight economic slump as France cut off the cotton trade to buy cheaper Indian cotton. After the Franco-Prussian war and declaration of the 3rd republic in Paris, French migrants flooded into Sonora, boosting the population. Under Raousset-Boulbon senate-congress elections had been irregular, as in the 1850’s there were no elections, but after several revolts and petitions, Blanco decided to regulate the elections, with congressional elections every four years, and senate every three years, but Presidents are still elected for life. Blanco initiated several reforms in Sonora, such as changing the flag from the French tricolor with the words "Indepéndance de Sonora" to a flag with a white background with two horizontal red stripes on the bottom and three red stars on the top. The Sonoran navy was expanded to actually being a physical force, with several frigates bought from the Britain, along with a Battle Cruiser. There is no need or population to support a bigger navy. It is more a symbol of wealth and power to the Sonorans and the World. During this period Sonora came closer politicly with Rio Grande, even setting up joint ‘anti-Bandit taskforce’. The taskforce is a commission of cavalrymen to combat Bandit kings of the south, whose raids had intensified in the early years of the 1880’s. Some in both countries ponder if their republic should annex parts of Mexico or establish satellite nations to stabilise their nations, or even down right invasion and conquest of the Bandit nations.
By 1886 the Republic of Sonora had approximately 1,250,000 population, significantly greater then OTL, partially due to the migration of French, bit mostly to do with the migration of Mexicans into the republic, the better health system, etc. Sonora and Rio Grande are minor powers, strong in their own way, but they couldn’t take on a Great Power, but they could defeat the Bandit nations easily, and a war between the two of them would be a close stalemate, but Rio Grande would be the more powerful, simply through pure numbers.

Armed Forces:
Soldiers: A standing army of about 20,000. The uniforms are brown pants with a white and red jacket, with a small white hat. Guns are a mix of British/French/American arms, no real standard weapon, but the British model rifles are used by the majority of troops, but in some cases the American and French models are used. Troops are also equipped with swords and grenades. Most regiments are backed up by several gatling gun. There are four artillery regiments with heavy artillery.
Cavalry: three Cavalry regiments with 500 units in each, most from the Bandit-Knights established in the early days of the republic. The elite army units are cavalry units that live of the land, like a professional stereotypical view of cowboys, eg living of the land, tracking enemies for days across the desert, and are allowed a certain amount of freedom compared to other troops.
Navy:
4 Frigates, the Hermosillo, the Guaymas, (7,300 tons, 13 knots, range 3,000 nm, 96x17x8 m; armament 40x200 mm; armour: 140 mm; 590 crewmen)

A 15,000 Man Army is what Navarre has left to defend itself. 5,000 of which are Calvary.

History:
In 1554 Queen Joan III choose declared Calvinism her kingdom's official religion. With support from her daughter and heir's husband, King Edward VI of England, Navarre was succesfully able to establish its Church. However, many nobles felt that the new religion was too liberal.

Sadly, in 1560, when Catherine assumed the throne in Navaree, her husband died. But, she was pregnant. Parliament decided to rule regency in England until the Dowager Queen gave birth to a child. It was a girl. Parliament passed the crown to Princess Elizabeth. (Mary died in 1558, after fleeing to the HRE).

Queen Catherine I had been a good friend of Queen Elizabeth of England. Under Catherine's rule, the Church of Navarre took a more catholic form. The episcopate was re-instated and the Queen was declared Pope of the Navarrese Church. She claimed Apostolic Succession when her Protestant appointed Cardinals created her Pope. Catherine later married a prince of Denmark, and gave birth to a son, the future King Loui I.

During the sixteenth, and seventeenth century Navarre became the naval superpower. Establishing colonies in Central America, and in the La Plata region of South America. During Loui V's reign (1689-1721) Navarre was able to force Spain into re-gaining some of its former counties lost to Castile.

By the 19th Century, Navarree was a very succesful nation. The current King, Philip VII, came to power in 1830, and married a Protestant Bourbon ex-princess. He also changed his Episcopate title to "Pontiff of all Navree" instead of the blatantly Catholic: "Pope"

Now, Navrre is content ruling the small colony of Brasillia, and being a major player in continental affairs.

History – POD November 1549 Conclave chooses 61 year-old Juan Alvarez y Alva de Toledo as Pope. At the moment of his election, de Toledo is struck mute and unable to communicate for a month. Upon his recovery he announces he has had a vision of Jesus who told him, “You will be called Beneficent, for through you my Beneficence will be shown to the world.” Pope Beneficent (later St. Beneficent) was previously a conservative Dominican who even recommended the reconstitution of the Inquisition in light of the Reformation. However, after his vision he demonstrated a complete change of heart, bringing an accelerated counter-reformation to the Catholic Church, instituting tolerance and a more heterogeneous approach to belief. Protestant movements on the continent never take hold. This change in character of the church was cemented with the lengthy forty year reign of Pope Beneficent, who died at the age of 101 years old. By the time of his death, all Cardinals had been his appointments, and he tended to promote younger men than his predecessors, and thus secured his legacy of reform. The vision of Saint Beneficent would go down in Christian history as the most significant since Paul on the Road to Damascus.

Pope Beneficent’s influence was especially felt in his birth nation of Spain, where the combination of elation at the elevation of a Spaniard to the head of the church, combined with the miraculous circumstances surrounding Beneficent caused the most amazing alteration in the spirit of the nation. The new tolerance allowed talented people previously excluded, even non-Christians, to rise to the fore and the administration of the Empire would be the better for it. It also made for a more humane treatment of subject peoples in the New World.

One of the earliest changes this new spirit engendered was a reorganization of the administration of the Iberian (Spain and Portugal would still be ruled by a single monarch for a time as in the OTL) New World. The Spanish Empire was split into three Viceroyalties (with Brazil comprising a fourth) in 1566, the Viceroyalty of New Spain in the North (essentially as in OTL sans southern Mexico and the Caribbean), the Viceroyalty of New Granada in the Center (comprised of the Caribbean, the Captaincy of Gracias i.e. Southern Mexico and Central America, New Granada, Venezuela, and Ecuador), and the Viceroyalty of Peru (the rest of South America) in the South. Within a few years, peninsular Florida, which had closer ties to the Caribbean, would successfully petition the crown to join the Viceroyalty of New Granada. New Granada would also expand along the Northern coast of South America to include all the Guyanas.

With this reorganization also went a new wave of energetic and empowered viceroys. The Viceroyalty of New Granada paid particular attention to affirming Spain’s claim to the entire Caribbean, and fought tirelessly to drive pirates and buccaneers out of her waters and islands (many didn’t actually leave, but settled down to a quieter life of smuggling). More of the profits of the New World were re-invested in developing the viceroyalties, leading to greater growth and prosperity. The papal edicts decrying the unending bondage of slaves in the 1560s influenced the Spanish Crown to enact limits on the length slaves could be held in bondage to 15 years for those captured and forced into slavery, and 20 years for those in debt. The peon system was also reformed, and over the centuries the two practices would be gradually phased out and replaced by free labor by 1723.

The Viceroyalty of New Granada developed along distinct regional lines. The South American region’s wealth was based on mining, first precious metals and gems, and then later with coal and iron. Coffee and cocoa were also major products of the region. The Caribbean Island region (including the Florida peninsula) built its wealth on growing and exporting sugar and sugar products, and indeed had a virtual monopoly on the trade. The Central American region struggled at first to find a niche economically, but as the Pacific grew, it became an important link in transoceanic trade. The culmination of this tradition was the construction and later modernization of the Panama Canal.

A canal linking the Pacific and Atlantic (via the Caribbean) had been proposed as far back as the early 1500s, but the viceroyalty only seriously considered the project in the ending decades of the 17th century. The project took many decades to complete and suffered several setbacks initially. However, enthusiasm remained high throughout the region for the project and with some additional backing from financiers of the other two regions and the crown, it was completed in 1733. The project stimulated the development of many new technological innovations and served as a model for canal construction for a century. Indeed, canals would be built to facilitate transportation throughout Central and South America, based in no small part on the hard earned experiences of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal itself would undergo a major expansion and modernization that was completed in 1846.

The Industrial Revolution started at the dawn of the 19th Century in Northern South America, and spread rapidly to her sister nations and across the sea to the continent. Although overtaken early on by some of the great nations of Europe in terms of percent output, the New Granadan industrial sector grew at a rapid pace as factories spread throughout Venezuela and Columbia at first, and eventually to the rest of the South and Central America. The Caribbean remained focused on agriculture and shipping. Worker conditions were safeguarded early on by activist priests following in the best traditions of the Church. With industrialism came the railways, which finally pierced into the interior of the continent and soon crisscrossed the nation. However, sea travel was still the main transportation of the nation, with the Caribbean serving as the highway of the country. Indeed, most New Granadans think of themselves as men of the sea, and even the lowliest will often have a small boat they employ for pleasure and dream of the great merchant fleets of the Kingdom. One particular technological marvel achieved in recent years was the laying of the ‘Great Circle’, a telegraph system that traverses down the entire length of Central America, across the Northern South American region, and then continues up the chain of islands until it reaches Cuba, where it then travels its greatest underwater length from the tip of the island back to the Yucatan, completing the circuit. Important spurs of the telegraph network go south to Ecuador in the west and Guyana in the east, as well as north up the coast of Florida. This rapid communications system has been especially useful in providing warnings of approaching Hurricanes to the nation. It also has aided in the work of the New Granadan Customs service, a branch of the New Granadan Navy that has a particularly strong presence along the islands of the Caribbean. Tall towers and in some locations balloons, are stationed on a majority of the islands, allowing spotters to sight ships approaching New Granadan waters, and fast ships can be dispatched to interdict any shipping that fails to stop off at a Customs port for inspection.

The Viceroyalty of New Granada became the Kingdom of New Granada in 1747, when the King appointed four of his children as vassal rulers of the four former viceroyalties (Spain and Portugal remained jointly ruled), and he himself was proclaimed Emperor of the Hispanic Empire. The new Kingdoms by and large followed the trend already developing on the Iberian Peninsula at the time of delegating authority in most matters to the elected officials of the Cortez. Initially, the Cortez only represented the landed class. However, over the centuries the restrictions on who might vote and serve in the Cortez were eased, and by as early as the 1780s even minor landholders could elect and be elected to the Cortez. By the 19th Century, voting for the Cortez was based on universal male suffrage and anyone could be elected to represent the people.

Education levels are generally high, with primary and secondary education provided by the Church, and universities are subsidized by the government for those who pass the rigorous entrance examinations. The ‘standard’ dialect and accent of New Granadan Spanish is based on the regional Colombian style, and is considered one of the loveliest and most sophisticated in the Spanish speaking world.

Culturally, the Kingdom of New Granada follows a model of the chivalrous criolle caballero that has percolated through to all levels of society as one to aspire to (perhaps a little less so in the islands, where a more laid back version of mainland society exists). The reforms of the Church and subsequent Latin society have tended to ameliorate some of the worst biases towards women, but they still do not enjoy equality. Clothing tends to be similar to OTL 19th century mode, but with higher class attire widespread among the large middle class. One major exception to these cultural norms occurs during Carnaval, when masks go on and clothes get scarce throughout the nation. While most of the time, chastity and fidelity are virtues, during Carnaval a more bacchanalian spirit takes over. Liaisons during Carnaval usually stop at fully intimate relations, but can go quite far otherwise.

Several decades ago, interest in studying ancient Mayan culture began in the north as new archaelogical studies began to give a clearer picture of those times. This trend has spread throughout New Granada, and Mayan elements have worked their way into the more stylish and fashionable quarters of New Granadan society. It is a popular excursion of gentlemen and their ladies to tour the great temples and ruins in the Northwest of the nation, and this has become a boom industry for that corner of the nation.

The most recent excitement in New Granada society was the recent elevation of a New Granadan to the Papacy as Pope Beneficent V. He has returned recently to celebrate the New Year before making a tour of the Americas, the first Pope to do so in a century.

Armed Forces – The Kingdom of New Granada, located centrally to her sister nations of the Hispanic Empire, does not require a large standing army (though the Florida border remains garrisoned), instead settling for a small professional corps that can serve as cadre for new recruits in time of war. Indeed, for anything less than war, most New Granadans will form a posse and aid the authorities in any confrontation. Almost universally, New Granadan citizens keep and maintain arms in their homes, part of the Caballero culture. Hunting remains a popular pastime (and in some more rural regions still supplements family diets), and thus most New Granadans are not only armed but proficient with their rifles. Also, dueling still remains an active part of New Granadan culture, both with sword and pistol, though the trend has been to fight to first blood rather than the death, and use of pistols for dueling has been on the decrease. In contrast to the army, the New Granadan Navy is well developed for its role as the protectors of the Caribbean and the adjacent Atlantic. They are also charged along with the navies of New Spain and Peru of patrolling the Pacific coast of the Americas. In the War of 1850 (1850-1855) with Russian and England, the New Granadan Navy distinguished itself in several actions. Several lessons of that great war were later incorporated into the new ships commissioned in latter decades. By 1880, the New Granadan Navy had many new ships with main guns on turrets and powered solely by steam (most commercial shipping in the Caribbean still use sail or sail and steam). Further maintaining the New Granadan Navy’s high standards is the ‘friendly’ rivalry between that navy and the navies of the neighboring Hispanic Empire nations. New Granada also has a strong Marine Corps to complement the Navy.

See ME7: The Armed Forces for specifics.

Head of State/Government – King Carlos II of New Granada / Constitutional Monarchy (power shared between the Crown and the Cortez). Vassal State of the Hispanic Empire.

A couple other minor points.

The King has a Council of the Peoples that has a member of each of the many indigineous peoples in it, as well as other minorities not represented in the Cortez. The original purpose of this body was to provide advice to the government from a quarter otherwise not heard from. While it gives them a voice, it has no real power. As these groups have started to see representatives elected to the Cortez (for example, the Maya), their Council reps have been dropped. However, several minorities of European immigrants are now represented in the Council.

Coffee and Cocoa are major domestic and foreign products. Indeed Coffee and Chocolate drinks are a strong tradition in the nation, and are consumed by all from an early age, usually on a daily basis (heavily sweetened with Caribbean sugar, of course). The most patriotic drink is a sweetened Mocha.

Speaking of Chocolate, Guyana at the intersection of the sugar and cocoa producing regions has become a major candy producer, and ships tons of candy to Europe and North America.

The Central American region of course is still a major producer of Bananas/Plantains and also Pineapples.

The Kingdom of New Granada has a well-developed disaster response ability based on regions to deal with Hurricanes, Earthquakes, and the occasional Volcanic activity.

It should also be noted in the write-up on New Granada that oil exploitation has begun, and has virtually replaced the use of whale oil.

Banking is a big business in New Granada, which has some of the most banking-friendly laws in the world (think OTL Swiss and Caribbean banks). The Central American region particularly has worked to build their banking.

Depending whether the ISOT is set in January 1 1870 or April 1 1886, I may have to change the reason Pope Beneficent V is in New Granada, and adjust the date of the last War (currently called the War of 1850). I want this war to have ended approximately 15 years before the ISOT, so if it is 1886, I will have it fought from 1865-70.

The maps we currently have show the Western Border of Florida more with either the Auchilla river or with the Withlacocochee river to the Suwannee. Not certain which would be better (having the entire course of the Suwannee turns out to be more tortuous, and doesn't make a lot of sense as a boundary they'd have used, especially with these other options trivially nearby. Any suggestions?

if we can be having weapons five years after the ISOT I guess this ones qualify as being in development.

While efficient, the mechanism was not directly transferable to small arms. It did inspire a good deal of experimentation, and in 1890 Dr. Alexandra Tolgren, of the Shahnapur Technological Institute, made the first serious application of the gas-delayed blowback principle which was to be the foundation of Drakan small-arms design for two generations.

The Tolgren automatic pistol used a rimless modification of the standard 10 x 15 mm smokeless-powder pistol round adopted in 1881. The feed device was a 12-round staggered box clip in the grip. Operation was as follows: the bolt, which was machined to wrap around the barrel on three sides, ran forward, chambered a round and fired when the trigger was pulled. Above the barrel was a short cylinder, the rear end of which was sealed. A gas port was drilled through to the barrel, and a piston-head and rod were inserted in the tube forward of the port. The operating rod ran forward through a further, slotted portion of the tube which contained a coil-spring, and at the forward end was fastened to two steel pins that ran in grooves back along the outside of the gas tube and attached to the bolt.

At rest, the spring held the breech sealed. When fired, the recoil of the weapon began to blow the bolt backward, against the force of the coil spring and the inertia of the bolt and operating rods. These alone would not have sufficed to keep the breech sealed, but as the bullet fired, high-pressure gas filled the tube above the barrel and prevented the piston head from recoiling. Once the bullet had left the muzzle, the pressure in the cylinder dropped and the piston traveled backwards, forcing the remaining gas into the barrel. The bolt recoiled, then moved forward as the coil spring expanded, stripping another round from the clip and repeating the cycle.

The gas-delayed blowback system proved to give a reliable operation, particularly after it became possible to chrome-plate internal parts subject to gas-wash.

Actually, I think that refers to five years from the ISOT date level of tech ala OTL. The Draka timeline is a little further advanced than OTL as originally conceived. You'll have to check with the moderators, but I believe your Draka are limited to tech and innovations no later than 1891 OTL.

No, its not too far fetched, but we need to have rules that everyone can follow. And the machine pistol isn't the only thing you've got listed for the Draka that needs consideration, like those Dirigibles and Automobiles (though it sounds like those are more trouble than they are worth at present<g>).

I'm not saying we can't have your stuff included, but if we do we then need to refine our tech limit definitions to allow some others to take advantage of that flexibility where appropriate.

I'm okay with any tech limit we apply, just so long as it is clear what the limits are, and everyone has the chance to consider 'pushing the envelope' where appropriate.

Here is a little info about steam cars in OTL.

In Britain, from 1820 to 1840, steam-powered stagecoaches were in regular service. These were later banned from public roads and Britain's railroad system developed as a result.

Steam-driven road tractors (built by Charles Deitz) pulled passenger carriages around Paris and Bordeaux up to 1850.

In the United States, numerous steam coaches were built from 1860 to 1880. Inventors included: Harrison Dyer, Joseph Dixon, Rufus Porter, and William T. James.

Amedee Bollee Sr. built advanced steam cars from 1873 to 1883. The "La Mancelle" built in 1878, had a front-mounted engine, shaft drive to the differential, chain drive to the rear wheels, steering wheel on a vertical shaft and driver's seat behind the engine. The boiler was carried behind the passenger compartment.

the airships are small things closer to the original LZ1 zeppelin but a better engine due to more advanced steam technology.

I agree somewhat. With better steam engines the weapons systems I mentioned could be possible. Not war winning weapons but possible. As long as a good explanation is made I think someone could have some weird weapons as long as they are not general issue. For example, I'm saying a machine pistol in 1894. But I agree that the only realistic way to have one is that is that trench warfare somewhere gave someone the idea of further developments of the semi-auto pistol being develop by the Draka and the germans[hope Mauser is not butterflied], and a young genius in America called Browning.

New History for Japan:
Name: Imperial Empire of Japan
Capital: Edo (Tokyo)
Pre-ISOT Boundries: Japan, Formosa, Korea, Manchuria
Post-ISOT Boundries: Japan, Formosa, Korea, Manchuria
Population: 40,530,000
History: The history of Imperial Japan began not with the signing of the daimyo accords in 1830, but with the landing of the Spanish, Portugese, and British naval forces on the island of Kyushu in the 16th century. The beginnings of Spanish colonialism in the eastern hemisphere, beginning with the subjugation of the philippino natives in the late 16th century, and going untill the early 18th century. Once the Spanish gained a foothold in the Philippines, they also began to take a look at Japan. Seeing its feudal state, they saw a chance to take a stance. In 1605, in the same month that the first british settlement at Roanoke's population spiked toclose to 15,000, the Spanish signed a set of accords with the still powerless Japanese emperor, known as the Edo accords. These accords allowed Spanish vessels to freely trade in japanese ports, with little or no resistance from japanese traders. By the 1650's, Japan's problem with the daimyo's had settled from a raging civil war, down to a bloodless political war being fought within the boundaries of all of the city states. By the end of the 17th century, Japan was on its way to becoming a stable nation, but this would all change with the Chinese Emperor's offensive movement into the Sea of Japan in 1702. For almost 900 years, China had not attempted to make any offensive attacks into Japan after the Kamikaze struck, and sank the invading mongol hoarde. For 15 years, China and Japan fought openly in the Sea of Japan, fighting to a stalemate. The one tie breaker on teh side of the Japanese, was the presence of the Spanish in the Philippines, and in south east Asia. More to come later... give me a few hours to think of the rest.

Japanese Histry, cont'd

With the spanish posessions in the asiatic sphere threattened by the open war being fought betweemn their ally, Imperial Japan, and the Chinese, Spain felt it necessary to step in and end this conflict themselves, before it dragged other powers into the fight. In May, 1717, the Spanish were able to broker a deal betwen the Japanese and the Chinese. These peace agreements, known as the Edo Peace Accords, brought the bloody naval battle to a close, with no decisive victory.

With the end of the Chinese/Japanese war, the Japanese turned to internal problems. For the past millenia, the Shogunate had been in power, essentially crippling Japan to make any sort of progress towards weternizing their country, and getting on the long road to industrialization. So, in August, 1720, the emperor called together the remaining Shogun of Japan, in a meeting in Edo, which has been called the beginning of Modern Japan. Within three months, the emperor drew up what has become formally known as the Edo Unification Doctorine, which placed the 50 remaining Shogun as provincional govenors, and made the Samurai the peacekeepers of Japan as well as officers in the newly formed Imperial Army. By 1725, all Shogun had relinquished power to the Emperor, and had begun the task of bringing Japan under the rule of a single man, the Emperor. From 1730 onward, the problems of Samurai dueling in the street for their Shogun had ceased, and Japan was unified under a single flag, the flag of the rising sun with sunrays streaking outward from it, a symbol of the predominantly Shinto peoples of Japan.

Between the years 1730, and 1812, Japan focused on internal matters, beginning the task of building up the farm crops, ship construction, and of course, the task of building a formidable navy for Japan. The task was long and arguous, but by 1810, Japan had a navy to rival that of Spain in the Asiatic sphere, and its Army was second to none. The only army close to the level of precision that the Japanese had attained, was the army of China, who had been at a state of constant militarization ever since the end of the Chinese/Japanese conflict some century earlier. The justification of this, was to look at Rival Japan, and colonial power Spain, and see both as a viable threat, so no moves to demilitarize were ever followed.

An other situation, was the situation with the fledgling United States of America. Former british colonies, gone independent, this was a situation that the emperor found most...intreguing. When America declared independence, Japan did not have a strong enough navy to support the Colonists, or back the british, so, the nation simply decided to let them fight it out. When the Louisiana Purchase was made in 1803, this news was plastered all over newspapers from Edo, to Kagoshima. The fledgling American Democracy had tripled in size, almost over night. America now spread from sea to sea, with no foreign powers to deal with in their sphere of influence, besides Spain, and England.

In 1812, the USA and Great Britain went to war for the second time in almost 40 years, and this time, Japan was ready. When war was declared, close to 15,000 reservists were called up in the metro Edo/Yokahama district to guard the ports of Edo, Yokahama, Osaka, and Kobe, all of which housed American, and British merchantmen. They also housed four American Sloops of war: the USS New York, Boston, Minuteman, and Newport. The british sloops of war HMS Indefatigable, India, Liverpool, Labrador, and Honor as well as the Prussian Frigate Brandenberg. This proved a dangerous mixture, for the Prussians, although neutral, were still in a defensive alliance with england. With the first shots fired in Canada, the Imperial Japanese Army, and Navy jumped in to stop any fighting. The british sloops of war were planned to be escorted to the port city of Kagoshima on Kyushu, and asked to kindly leave Japanese waters, before any hostile gestures were placed upon the war ready Japanese, to which the british told the japanese to "bugger off", that the british would "Leave only when the Yankee pirates were sunk, and their crews brought to trial in England for piracy." Japan answered with a gesture of their own.

On July 4, 1812, the Japanese navy dispatched the frigates Yokahama, Rising Sun, Kagoshima, and Kamikaze into Edo harbor to forcibly remove the British. The Sloop of War HMS Honor, fired her guns at the Kagoshima and killed four crewmembers. the Imperial Japanesew Navy reacted, along with the United states sloops New York, and Minuteman, the Kagoshima sent the HMS Honor to the bottom of Edo harbor, along with crippling the Indefatigable, and India.

The Liverpool, and Labrador sailed top speed into the Pacific Ocean, with the report of Japanese hostility. With this, the prussian frigate "Brandenberg" swiftly left port. The American navy was invited to sail with the Japanese main fleet down to Madras and show the British how things were done. At the head of the grand fleet, sat the USS New York, Boston, and Newport, leaving Minuteman in Edo, along with the Kagoshima, Yokahama, Kamikaze, and the rest of the Japanese grand fleet, comprising some 85 ships of war. The fleet left Japanese territorial waters on the 25th of July, 1812, on a heading for Madras, with a prayer by the local Shinto Priest, and the blessing of the emperor.

When the ships reached Manilla on the 14th of August, the Spanish reported that the American military had been on the defensive, but that the USS Constitution, and her sister ship, Constellation, had won naval battles of the Atlantic Coast of America, and were preparing to break the British Blockade. The american naval officers were extatic, and wanted to show the british just what the american navy could do. The ships reached Madras some Month and a half later. The british sloops Liverpool, and Labrador, along with a squadron of frigates and their escorts had taken up residence in Madras, and were not leaving any time soon. The Japanese acted quickly, drawing up the battle line. Working in tangent with the American Captains, the Japanese navy fought its first sea battle in over 100 years.

The british vessels fought with ferocity, but were driven back by superior firepower, and the determination of the American and Japanese captains. By the end of the day, the Japanese navy had lost thirteen ships of war, including the Kamikaze, and Rising Sun, vetrans of the battle of Edo Harbor. But, the Japanese navy had won a resounding victory, driving the british out of the Bay of Bengal, and giving the american crews a victory to report home to boston with. On the 10th of October, the American sloops of war left for home, bringing with them, the HMS Liverpool, and the frigate Belfast as trophy's of their victory.

Most of the fighting in the asiatic sphere was limited to the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean. By the end of the war, the american sloop New York had returned to Japanese waters, as a permanent resident of Edo harbor, serving as the first concrete link between the United States, and her new Asiatic ally. But, this was not the end of the fighting in Asia.

Within 30 years, Japan had secured the island of Formosa, and the Korean peninsula from the Chinese, and were prepared to make a full drive into Manchuria, when the Chinese peacably signed over Manchuria to the Japanese in 1850. Over the past 30 years, china had come under siege. Japan, Spain, Britain, and Prussia had all assaulted Chinese waters, pummeled her navy onto the bottom of the South China Sea, and had carved up parts of Southern China for their own.

Japan agreed of course, and by 1880, Japan had fully industrialized the home islands, along with parts of Korea, Formosa, and had just begun in Manchuria. With this, the emperor, Emperor Meiji Mutsuhito took the throne of Edo, and took up the task of ruling Japan.

Also why it is good that we wait until we have a final map that everyone can see and agrees represents all the ISOT claims previously agreed to before we start play. That was one thing that struck me about the start of ME6, it got started before the maps had really been finalized and I think it caused unnecessary confusion early on. No fault, just one of those things. I think we can do better this time.

This is a bit rough, but....

Armed Forces of the Kingdom of New Granada

Army - 35,000 men, mostly infantry armed with the New Granada equivalent of Lee-Metford Mark II rifles (with bayonets) with smokeless .303 rounds, officers and noncoms carry New Granadan equivalent of the Colt .45 1878 Double Action. Many also carry Bowie Knives. Most artillery is light to allow it to be transported, but there are heavy artillery emplacements on the Northern Florida border and around the ends of the Panama Canal. Gatling Guns are distributed two per company in general, though there is a higher ratio emplaced along the Florida border. There is a small cavalry force as well. Army has many soldiers well trained in Jungle and Mountain fighting.

Marines - 25,000 men, arms same as the army. Have in addition government issued knives equivalent to OTL K-bars. No artillery, as they depend on naval vessels for bombardment support. Note the marines are a separate branch of the military. Long tradition of making beach landings.

Navy - Approximately half the size of the ME7 British Royal Navy.

Regular navy basically have equivalent predreadnought and other ship-of-the-line vessels of OTL British Royal Navy launched from around 1875 on. Due to experience from last war, all these ships are solely powered by steam with rigging removed and have turreted guns (regardless of RN version's state). Note the New Granadan Royal Sovereign Class clones also have keel ballasts (or some such thing) installed to correct tendency to tilt in heavy weather. Traditionally, Regular Navy ships are named after animals, particularly predators and other dangerous animals.

Granadan Customs is a branch of the Navy, and has smaller, older ships. In this case, they have mostly ships older in style than the RN 1875 equivalents, and it is just half the number. Customs ships have retained their rigging, and though coal is available for them often prefer to run with sail. What Customs lack in modernity, they make up for in numbers, actually having more vessels than the Regular Navy. They also have a number of 'gunboats' for chasing smugglers up canals and rivers on the mainland. Ship names tend to be individualized based on the tastes of the captains of those vessels, and vary widely.

All naval personnel carry the Colt revolver equivalent, the same one as the Army officers.

General Notes - Note, all services wear swords when in formal dress (and they are functional, not just for show), and officers will usually wear them in the field as well. The uniforms of the New Granadans tend to be long fiber cotton, ventile-poplin with double and triple stitching, large numbers of pockets, and vented arms. They are mostly geared towards the tropical climate, but there is a winter version for service in the mountains. Army wears khaki, marines wear blue, navy wears white. Hats look like jaunty angled cowboy hats (think Aussies more here). On field uniforms, all metal has a black dull coating to prevent reflections.

No, you don't have to change it. The head of the British Empire would use English lineage, and in that case the Alexanders don't count. Resources we had. That changes with the ISOT. About 1/3rd to 1/5th of the population out west was soldiers before the turn of the century. We also 'enlist' the native population into our industries that we do base there. Plus it only takes a few people to run a farm with the proper tech.

I think it depends on the number of Regiments consolidated under the Cardwell reforms. Like the 24th Regiment of Foot is about 2000 strong, because the South Wales Borderers was formerly two separate regiments.

I couldn't find any numbers for the British Army, so would you be amenable to me making it 1000 men per pre-Cardwell Regiment and then various regiment sizes for consolidated Regiments?

Any other suggestions?

Oh, and how badass of a nickname is "The Vein Openers" for the 29th Regiment of Foot? And "The Donkey Wallopers" for the Household Cavalry?

The British Regimental System is terrible confusing, so you may have picked up on something that I missed, or visa-versa. What I did find was that each one of those Regiments had 2 battalions, one of which chilled out at home for training and the other was over seas. You're right. All of 'Germany' seems to have been between 45 and 49 million in the 1880s, and Prussia was between 27 and 29 million.

Mods take note, that population seems to be too high.

It appears that France was only reaching 39 million by 1900, so that is high as well (unless they are counting colonial possessions, in which case it might be right.

And before anyone mentions the population of New Granada, yes it is higher than the combination population of the OTL countries it comprises, but that is due to its more prosperous and open history. It just has developed a heck of a lot more in their tl.

Trained Civillians. The Dutch Southwest is suppose to be frontier. There were more soldiers outwest than settlers. Others would be debtors. In MauriBasil almost all of them are former soldiers. Look at the troop numbers for the USA, who still has the greater portion of the 'Wild West'. Professional troop numbers should be low, I'd guess, and if you have that supplemented by a large number of trained civilians, that should be indicated separately (or did you already do that and I missed it?).

Ah, so a military colony like Rome? Interesting and certainly a plausible reason for there being a large body of experienced citizenry to call up in time of need. However, this would tend to indicate that your armed forces in the area are much older (veterans rather than new recruits) and still sounds like they are only part time soldiers at this point, and not a standing army. Am I misunderstanding?

Indeed, I agree... Here's an example of the language:
Iuulayiss y'Rebothyaa
IUULAY - Council
ISS - Government
IUULAYISS - Government by Council, basically Republic
Y' - Of
REBOTH - Unknown, personal name
YA - Place
A - City sub-suffix
So it meant "Republic of the City of Reboth

Of course, this is all completely irrelevant to ME6.

But useful for Proper Names.
